Title: CRACKED
Post by: bk on December 04, 2009, 12:22:50 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cracked, and now it is time for you to post until the cracked cows come home - they're currently eating some cracked crab whilst cracking wise.

I can crack my knuckles and my ankles, knees, hips, back, neck, toes and fingers.  When I was in high school, I counted and at one point, I could crack 56 joints...or at least make 56 cracking noises.  I stopped doing all that cracking on a regular basis shortly after that, but I still have certain joints that I crack regularly.  I don't think that it'll ever end.  And it does feel real good. :D

The first thing I do upon waking in the morning is to flex/rotate my ankles and feet.  It produces all kinds of satisfying cracking and crackling in the ankles and in all the little bones of my feet!

Growing up, I used to crack my knuckles and especially my neck all the time; it would drive my mother to distraction!  She insisted that one day my head was simply going to snap off.     :)

I have read conflicting reports over the years as to whether cracking your joints can do any kind of long term damage or cause complications later on in life.  In the end, I decided that the consensus was that it was not a problem, so I continue to do it.

Morning all.

I'm eating my oatmeal and at 7am I will watch Arthur.

I won't be listening to much today since I'll be at Equity loading in the goods for the Bag Packing. When I come home I will be tired and I know I won't be able to make it through a DVD so I'll just have dinner and relax.

Another cracker here.  I love how it feels.  I picked it up from my father when I was a youngen and still do it.  Knuckles, wrists, shoulders, neck, back, lower back, hips, ankle and toes (my knees pop, but that's another story.)  Sometimes, if I have tension built up in my scalp, I can grab handfuls of hair and, by slightly pulling this way and that, produce sound.

I also heard the pro and con stories about joint cracking and like DR Daw, choose to ignore the cons.  But years ago, during a visit to the Omega Institute, a woman who was a massage therapist saw me cracking my neck and pointed out to me that I was doing it a bit too intensely.  I have since tried to not do it as often and to be much more gentle in all my self-cracking practices.

My ankles love to crack during Pilates or a ballroom class when the instructor keeps after us to do the steps properly. The nerve of some people!

On the topic in the column of Italian movies that never got released over here, has anybody ever seen "Voce della Luna" or whatever Fellini's last movie was? It had Roberto ("Life Is Beautiful") Benigni in it, but I don't think it ever made it to these shores.

No, I've never seen it, but if it has Roberto Benigni in it, that would likely keep me away from it unless I had to review it or something. He is my LEAST favorite world-acclaimed actor. A little of him goes a very long way for me.

I used to be a big knuckle and neck cracker, but I don't do that so much any more. Occasionally I have to crack toes to keep them from feeling stiff. I am still doing some of the physical therapy stretching exercises I was given this summer when I was going through my health crisis, and one of them always cracks my neck each morning. I assume it's OK since I was TOLD to do this.

Good morning, all! The alarm went off at 6:30 and I slept in. I finally dragged myself out of bed around 8:30 and I've been tending to small chores around the place. Today at 1:00 I have physical therapy, but most of the day I've got to deal with two holiday jobs and a few hours on the BABES IN TOYLAND Main Report. I need a trip to Toyland to check a newspaper citation but I can do that tomorrow morning and finish up the report on Sunday. I'm about 2/3 through the final draft, and so far I have one footnote to add and a couple of sentences that I find embarrassing need revision. It is very tedious work, I must say, jumping back and forth between the two sets of copy I'm working from.

Most everything is alphabetized, but they're in different spots around the house.  In one closet, I have a rack that contains animated features, westerns and war movies,  another closet has racks that contain movies by director.  There is also a closet that has musicals, science-fiction, TV movies and major Oscar winners.  Finally, there is a huge cabinet (with a moose on it) that contains movie box sets & TV seasons, and in my media room I have a wall of shelves that, in alphabetical order, contain the movies that don't fit in any of those other categories.

Currently, I'm trying to convince my wife to move her clothes out into the garage, so that I can put more DVDs into her closet.

 ::)

Truthfully, before I moved from Los Angeles to Austin, I got rid of about 1500 titles (many sold to BK), then here in Austin I sold about another 500.

Synchronicity time--for some reason I was just thinking of CRACKED Magazine last night.  What was their mascot's name?  I'll have to go Google that.  ;)  There was another very short-lived Mad-like magazine I remember quite well, especially since they had a fake ad contest I applied for but didn't win that was a parody of those old Colombian Coffee Juan Valdez commercials.  But I can't remember the name of the magazine.  Oh, well.

As for cracking...

I used to crack my knuckles all the time.  Nowadays, I only crack my knuckles when I think that it has been a while since I've cracked my knuckles.

I really wish I could crack my back on my own. When I was working on South Pacific at Arena Stage, it seemed that everyone in the cast knew how to crack backs.  Some people did it standing up, others did lying down. Hmmm... Anyhoo.... So, one day, I asked one of the guys to crack my back... WOW!  Like bk, the sound was quite incredible, and I remember a bunch of heads turning in the back hallway when they heard the "pop-pop-pop-pop-pop" of my vertebrae.  Needless to say, over the course of the next couple of weeks, I would ask Brad to crack my back again. And again.  Sometimes, I would just stand in front of him, cross my arms across my chest, and wait... :)

I also learned a way to self-crack my back, but that's not as much fun. ::)

I've finished the orchestration part of the work, so I'll copy the parts this weekend. I may be able to deiiver the parts top the Ethical Culture Fieldston School on Monday before I head over to the recoring sessions for FINIAN'S RAINBOW. If not, I'll drop them off on Tuesday.  Then I have to finish up the work for Brent's Birdland show by Thursday afternoon's rehearsal at 2.

In about 30 minutes I will walk to physical therapy.

BK, the one I'm thinking of only published two or three issues before folding.  This would have been when I was a kid in Seattle, so circa early 1970s.

I didn't watch anything before I headed off to the store. I did surf some message boards for various Blu-ray and TV forums on the downstairs laptop, but then headed out early and got the shopping done while the store was still relatively empty.

When I got in I watched last night's rerun of THE MENTALIST while I ate lunch. This was a good episode where Jane discovers they're being bugged. Paul Michael Glaser was one of the guest stars.

Next I watched last night's SUPERNATURAL rerun (which I had forgotten I had recorded. I have it on "Season Play"). It was a good one where Dean takes Cas to a whorehouse since it may be his last night on Earth. It's also the episode where Sam finds out he's to be Lucifer's vessel on earth during the apocalypse.

Misha Collins as the earthbound angel Castiel does some of his more endearing and effective acting in this episode.

Then I watched another NCIS episode from the first season box set since it was in the player still. It was an episode with Terry O' Quinn as a former commander of Gibbs' back from Iraq with some stolen money and some secrets. How ironic that two of the actors on the episode, Terry and Alan Dale (who was the head of NCIS during the first two seasons) would go on to have major roles on LOST. (Alan Dale plays Charles Widmore.)

Next, I watched ON THE TOWN. I was hoping it would look smashing upconverted on Blu-ray, but this is a movie in MAJOR need of a completely new master. It's OK but not nearly as sharp and clean as other MGM musicals of the period (IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME looks a million times better. It's a much newer transfer.).

Well, it's looking quite a bit like Christmas around our house.  The angels have taken up residence on the piano, surrounding the Advent wreath, and the stockings are hung by the chimney with care.  The candle lights in the windows will have to wait until after next Tuesday afternoon - that's when the crew is coming to clean all the windows and swap the screens for storms.  When Rob gets back from Michigan (travel vibes, please) and needs a break from final exams, we'll decorate the front porch railing.  I'm still trying to come up with something new to do with the inside stair rail.  I wasn't happy with the new lighted garland I bought last year because it doesn't drape nicely.  Any ideas?

DR Cillaliz - glad you have a solution that will make you happy.  I personally like the Storm's click screen [over, say, the iPhone's "slab of glass" approach with no tactile feedback], but I'm sure you get used to whatever you use with time.  Many people say they will never move away from a physical QWERTY keyboard - which is, of course, one of Blackberry's traditional strengths.

I got some excellent shows watched tonight. I began with the Blu-ray of UNDER SIEGE. This was always the DIE HARD wannabe on a ship (in fact, I heard that the second DIE HARD was going to be set on a ship and they had to rewrite the script once this came out). A pretty fair action film with Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey chewing up the scenery because star Steven Seagal wasn't going to be doing ANY acting at all.

The Blu-ray looked just OK. Certanly better than the laserdisc I had of the movie (I never got it on DVD).

Next I watched a SUPERNATURAL episode from the season four Blu-ray. This was the one that had Sam and Dean in office jobs and with totally different names and personalities though they slowly realize they were meant to be hunters. A very entertaining episode, especially funny since the Winchesters in this alternate reality became Smith and Wesson.

George, how was POONA?

Yeah, this 'Poona' show, it's not really for children (http://www.theolympian.com/living/highlight/story/1057317.html).

I enjoyed the evening, but I didn't love the show.  The script is hit and miss.  Some of it is very funny and some of it...not so much.  Overall, the audience really enjoyed it, but there were a few times that you could tell things in the script just didn't work.  The actors were great, though.  They were all very good with a LOT of energy.  Last night was their final dress, so technically it was a rehearsal.  But even the parts where mistakes occurred (like when Scott, the storyteller had to stop and rewind the cassette tape on stage for one bit because the tech person didn't) were pretty funny.  The stage manager yelled "sorry" three or four times during the evening.  And there is something to offend just about everyone...really!  One of the characters (one of the two aliens from another planet) is named C*nt (that's supposed to be a "u" instead of the "*") and is told that you can't say that, and C*nt, in a modern version of "Who's On First," thinks that "That" is the word that can't be spoken, but everyone does and doesn't understand that it's his name that is offending.  That was pretty funny.  I don't know if I'll see it again, but I'm certainly glad I went.

I skimmed through today's ATWT. Luke was on for a few scenes wondering why his mother and her husband were sleeping in separate bedrooms. Nothing with Luke in the previews for next week.

Tonight's GHOST WHISPERER had a better episode than usual this season. Very little this week with Aiden and much more with Melinda and Jim. And a good mystery this week.

MEDIUM had a very good episode, too, though I could have done completely without the Lee/Lynn proposal story. No more uninteresting character could have been introduced to this show than Lynn, made to accommodate the producer's wife.

A good friend of mine from CMU days was a guest star on MEDIUM tonight, so I watched it for the first time.  Gregory Sims, mi amigo, gave a very fine performance.

Later this afternoon I went to Pier 1 to see if I could finally find the writing desk I want for my library/conference room.  Not an office type desk, just a writing desk for those times I need to use my laptop in the conference room.   Anyway, they had a clearance desk that was exactly what I had in mind!   It has some light scratches on it, so I got her to give me a damage discount (the floor model was the only one left and it's discontinued so can't be ordered).  So I got a $400 desk for $150.  I feel like I got a real deal and it's just want I wanted.  It's not on the Pier 1 site anymore, so I can't include a photo.

Could you take a picture with your Blackberry?

;)

LOL, I guess I could have.  It was dark by the time I got it home and in the garage.  Maybe I'll take a photo tomorrow

Watching Phantom of the Opera now - the Lloyd Webber musical film.  Interesting seeing it a few years later.

Was he in the car? If so, yes, a very effective performance for sure.

Yep, that was Greg.  He's been appearing on quite a few CBS shows as of late, including one of the CSI shows and NUMBERS.  He never fails to let me know when he's going to be on - I like that in a friend.  :)

Looks like I'm going to have the weekend free. G-FORCE on Blu-ray was mailed out this week, but my copy did not get to me today, so I won't see it until Monday.

THE MEL BROOKS COLLECTION is coming - 9 films, and I already have several on Blu-ray already, so I can get the jump on that set by rewatching the ones I already have next week (BLAZING SADDLES, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and I've already reviewed SPACEBALLS) and writing them up.
