Theater chain puts a luxe twist on dinner and a movie
As they relaxed in the dimly lighted lounge, awaiting the sold-out screening of "Invictus," Stephen Galloway and his wife, Tina, were perusing the menu between sips of champagne. A waiter had just brought a chilled $49 bottle of Schramsberg sparkling wine and was ready for their order.
Tina was contemplating the $14 plate of fried calamari with ginger and lemon, while Stephen had a hankering for the $19 New York strip steak sandwich.
The Galloways are hardly high rollers -- he's a property manager and she's a social worker. Still, the Pasadena couple were more than willing to fork over $29 each for a movie ticket, on top of the bill for champagne and finger food.

BUMPER STICKER sighting:
CAUTION: I drive like you do.
-
Good Morning!
Well, the federal government is closed today (in Washington, DC) because of the snow, so my vacation has started a little early. I'm off now until the 30th.
I guess I should have dug my car out yesterday--the TV weather guy says that the melted snow from yesterday has frozen and it will be much harder to shovel today. But it is supposed to get into the mid to upper thirties so maybe there will be a little more melting.
I ventured out to Panera yesterday. Also Rite Aid to get some photos of my NY trip printed.
TOD: I think the only movie I saw at a movie theatre this year was Slumdog Millionaire.

I can't find the post asking me - BUT yes, I did read the Ayn Rand biography and enjoyed it very much. Also sent a copy to my sister for Christmas....the idea of which I am sure would please Ms Rand.
Not too much new information - if you have read the books by the Brandens - but a lot of info on Ayn's childhood and first years in the U.S. There is much mention of her friend Marcella who she met while working at RKO, but no further notice that said Marcella married Mark Rabwin. Marcella was a close friend of Lucille Ball and Judy Garland, since Mark was their doctor.

Monday morning greetings! The view outside my window today gives meaning to "In the Bleak Midwinter." It's not snowing or anything, but is sure is gloomy. Today I need to finish up wrapping, get a couple of things in the mail (watch out, DR Elmore!) and get my cooking/baking act together for the week.
-
I forgot the post office opens at 8, not 9 am, so I had a little bit of a wait. I did learn that as of today the US Postal Service is not guaranteeing fast service for Priority Mazil, so my three packages may be a day or two later than I would really like but I am optimistic. I also believe any time between Dec 25 and Epiphany is good for me. Thank God for those 12 days of Christmas.
-
I'm up (but about to go back to bed) and the new Kritzerland titles have been announced.
-
Heading back to be sounds like a great idea, even if there is no snow here in San Antonio. It's still too cold. Frost on the ground. Everything dead looking. Still, it's nicer than the mess inside the house, which I have to clean up today. This is one of those days when I wish I had the cleaning twitch Samantha had on "Bewitched."
And what that has to do with the best performances of the year, I don't know. And I don't really care.

Nothing yet from UPS, but those Fox discs may come in the afternoon delivery. If not, it'll be 8 1/2 on Blu-ray when I get in from lunch. I just plan to do the movie only. Well, I am catching up with 2008 films during this year, so they'll be included in my rundown of wonderful performances along with movies this year I've seen in the theater and on Blu-ray.
Actors - Sean Penn in MILK
Mickey Roarke in THE WRESTLER
Philip Seymour Hoffman in DOUBT
Ed Asner in UP
Liam Neeson in TAKEN
Actresses - Meryl Streep in DOUBT
Supporting Actors - Christoph Waltz in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
James Franco in MILK
Josh Brolin in MILK
Supporting Actresses - Amy Adams in DOUBT
Viola Davis in DOUBT
Diane Kruger in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
Marissa TOmei in THE WRESTLER
-
Jose - But if you do send it to Mr. Cole, please make sure to say that I know it's just a parody of an All That Chat thread; I can't find anything online that says Gregory Maguire actually said what the chatter said he said. :)

Well, the UPS truck did indeed show up and with it, Fox's (500) DAYS OF SUMMER and ALL ABOUT STEVE and Disney's 100 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, all on Blu-ray. Since the Disney doesn't come out until January 5th and the two Fox discs come out tomorrow, I'll do doing (500) DAYS OF SUMMER today. Looks like a raft of special features so I'll be spending the afternoon and part of the evening on it.
It's gonna be great getting back to work.

Well, I just went down to the basement to check on my sheets in the dryers, and as I got on the elevator to come back up, I smelled him!

I also went to Fed Ex to pick up large boxes for the Ohio shipment. I have until 4:30, not 8 pm, to get things in for third day delivery. I guess I'd better get busy!

As for the TOD:
I will add a vote for
Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds - he is second billed and has a large part (*) but is being pushed in the supporting category, I guess.
I will second DR MATTH's nomination for Diane Kruger as Brigit von Hammersmark and add Melanie Laurent as Shoshanna Dreyfuss both in the aforementioned IB.

I completely echo DR MATTH's opinion of the EPICS "special" on TCM last night. Although it is to be expected, since the one on "Thrillers" was pretty lame as well.
I think I will skip future Original Programming of this nature. Not well done at all, it was interesting to see and hear Fraser Heston and the son of Samuel Bronston - but mostly it was a blah!
-
DR Elmore - I'm glad you were pleased with last night's performance. Thanks for sharing the photo.

Printed out orders - very interesting on these two titles. Lots of people are only ordering one or the other, so I'm really glad I did them together. Then some people are ordering both and some others are ordering multiples of both. I won't say it's our fastest sellers but they're moving pretty well, especially considering we've only been live since six this morning.
-
Welcome seven GUESTS.
-
I've already done several errands and whatnot - including picking up the Empire of the Ants booklets for the composer to sign.
-
I'm up (but about to go back to bed) and the new Kritzerland titles have been announced.
BK, in the pictures of the LP Jacket Storybook (http://www.kritzerland.com/steelstory.htm) for "Rhapsody of Steel," one of the pictures is shown twice. Just thought that you'd want to know. :)
-
Before I left for lunch, I watched another episode of THE MENTALIST. This was the one in which a very average looking man was a lady killer that all the guys were envious of. When Patrick fixes up Cho to become a lady killer, well, WOW! He is one HOT man!
-
First same-sex wedding spread in Martha Stewart's (http://www.goodasyou.org/marthajeremyandrew2.pdf) magazine.
Nice!!

Hey! I don't know if this has been mentioned, since I can't read the posts at work. However, I jumped in my car this morning to go to work, and Brent Barrett magically appeared on my radio. At first I thought I was listening to CHIRSTMAS MORNINGS, but actually it was Sirius Radio's On Broadway playing CHIRSTMAS TIME. After the song ended they announced that they would be airing an interview and music with Brent at 9:00 p.m. EST on Christmas Eve; and that the show would air again on Christmas Day at (I believe) 6:00 p.m.
Cool! I don't suppose that anyone could record this for those of us who don't have Sirius Radio?? :D
-
When I got in from lunch, I watched (500) DAYS OF SUMMER. Almost completely captivating bittersweet romantic comedy. Lots of originality and with actors who seem closer to real people than one usually gets in movie romantic comedies.
I heartily recommend it. Definitely one of the best films I've seen this year. If it weren't for the a bit of a too slick ending, I would have totally flipped for it. I guess it was the film's concession toward being a crowd pleaser, but I was totally pleased without it.
-
I began looking at the bonus features. I sampled the commentary (OK but a bit drab), the deleted scenes (9 of them), the making of documentary, and the director's impressions of the film's Sundance reception (which was ecstatic).
-
My trip to the post office was successful - mailed a few packages and got the distinct impression that they will, indeed, be delivered in time for Christmas. Then I went to Kroger, where I only managed to forget 2 of the things that were written on my list. Oh, well, nothing we can't live without.
Rob calls this my "holiday head."
-
Haven't gotten to read posts but we did work our way to the end of the film. I'm exporting a QT to see if we still like it and then catching a cab for my long flight home. I have a layover in Charlotte so I will wave at Matt H's house!
Thanks again to DR Jose for his kindness. I tried to track down Larry after FINIAN'S RAINBOW last night hoping to meet Niece Charlotte but didn't get there in time.
Hope to see folks when we get back on NYE for a few days of being tourists before our big meeting with the producer!
-
Feel better vibes for DR JEANNE.
DR FJL - I love the phrase....washing and irony.
-
All of the children away from school and shopping and Dollar Tree and Wal Mart gave me "holiday head" DR GINNY.
I tried to say that many different ways, but it always comes out slightly blue.

The East Coast co-author of WHAT?

My nephew and his wife and two children were returning from Africa and were stranded at a New York airport Sunday as well. I think they are on their way home now.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm......I got the SOUTH PACIFIC Blu Ray today - I may watch it this evening.

Well, just because it's been one of those Twitter and YouTube afternoons:

DR Edi - vibes for a smooth trip home without any delays. I am jealous that you will be in NYC for NYE - Richard and I were there from Christmas Day evening to New Year's Day 27 years ago. We didn't go to the heart of Times Square for the revelry, but could see the ball drop from in front of our hotel at 7th Ave. and 53rd. And there were just enough partiers in the street to make it festive. Be sure to look north, toward Central Park, to see if they still do fireworks at midnight - that surprised us!
-

Wouldn't you know I'm back to working today, or I'd try to hop out to the airport to say hey! (I live on the same side of town as the airport.) A shame.

-
I'm going to hop off-line now and do some writing. Then, I must bound back downstairs and continue watching the bonus features on the disc. I should be finished in time to watch THE CLOSER tonight before I come upstairs to finish writing up today's work project.
WBBL.

Oy! My afternoon has been tied up with a draft of a report on the past six months to the Institute. I think it's pretty good now. DR Matt H, here's a photo for you:

Camouflage Art (http://www.toxel.com/inspiration/2009/10/04/camouflage-art-by-liu-bolin/)
This is pretty darned cool! But it reminds me of the commercial for that depression medicine, Cymbalta...all the people (who need the medication) are shown as blending into the background, like in these pictures.

LOL....probably DR derBRUCER...probably.

I just came in after shoveling my car out for the past 2 1/2 hours. That's enough snow for the year as far as I'm concerned! Funny, it looks like there'll be a White Christmas in Washington/Virginia, but probably not in Buffalo this year (I'm headed there Wednesday)!

Ginny: make sure Fr. Richard gets the word:
PRIEST IN BRITAIN ADVISES CONGREGATION TO SHOPLIFT (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,580807,00.html)
Father Tim Jones, a 41-year-old clergyman at St. Lawrence Church in York, England, said that shoplifting — rather than prostitution or burglary — is sometimes the best option for poor people struggling to make ends meet, according to the Web site.
"My advice as a Christian priest is to shoplift," Jones reportedly told churchgoers during his Sunday sermon. "I do not offer such advice because I think that stealing is a good thing, or because I think it is harmless, for it is neither."
"I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses — knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices," he continued.
"I would ask them not to take any more than they need, for any longer than they need ... My advice does not contradict the Bible's eighth commandment because God's love for the poor and despised outweighs the property rights of the rich."
What next - Saint Jean Valjean - patron saint of shoplifters?

Back from more errands and whatnot, and picking up several packages. One of them included the VERY VERY rare first edition of Bye Bye Birdie - anyone who collects first edition published musicals knows this is the holy grail. I don't know anyone who has it, in fact. There are exactly two copies on the ABE - one for $9500 (obviously a joke) and one for $2500, the latter copy nowhere near mine. I got it relatively inexpensively, too. Also in the mail, the soundtrack to UP - Disney only released it as an iTunes exclusive, not as a pressed CD. This is a fifty-one track CD made for Pixar family and friends. There is also an Academy promo out, but this is longer. Best of all, however, was a box from dear reader Laura, which contained homemade cookies and a LOT of them - they seem to be oatmeal/cranberry and I'm eating one now and it's amazingly amazing. I'll try to save some for my Do.
-
BK Jackpot!
-
Whew! Just watched I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES. Dinah Manoff got all of the pushy, irritating acting qualities of her mother.
-
Uh, OK, DR der Brucer - I'll pass that sermon topic along to Fr. Richard.
-
Seems like Santa has already started being very good to BK!
-
Relaxing and listening to UP. It's so nice to have ALL the music for the film, rather than just what you can get on iTunes.
-
Juliana will be here at six. Not sure I'm up for driving over the hill in Christmas rush hour traffic, so I'm thinkin' we'll end up at Jerry's or The Studio Cafe.
-
CRANBERRIES!
And oatmeal. A health food.
-
Today I went birding. And sadly, nothing posed for a photo.
-
I feel so healthy now, having eaten my oatmeal and cranberries.
-
I'm sure I'll have to have another couple later this evening.
-
Jrand - Thanks.
But a google search shows the phrase's origins:

-
Cranberries!
-
I was just watching a little of Mission Impossible II - not very good, especially by John Woo standards, but the Blu-Ray transfer is MUCH better than the Mission Impossible Blu-Ray.
-
A very odd tax emergency today.
-
Tax emergencies. Not a good thing. Not a good thing at all.
-
I have now wrapped everything on our package-wrapping table except my own stocking-stuffers. Whew, I'm a tired elf!
-
Listening to the soundtrack to Freud by Jerry Goldsmith - really excellent.
-
The ad has a nice message it says: "This christmas we want to share with you our best wishes for a Christmas of love, peace and friendship"
But it's really the hat that makes the ad. I figure if people think it's funny looking they will point it out to their friends
-
Well we never get to page seven?
-
Where in tarnation IS page seven?
-
Why there it is.
-
I hope dear Juliana is on time because I'm HUNGRY!
-
Don't fill up on junk.
-
I had an insane day. I thought to myself "Self, don't write that brief on the weekend, you have all day Monday to do it" HA! today was sheer insanity. I did get the brief done about 5:30 PM, but by that time I was a grump.
-
We're going to to have a blizz on wednesday, the day I wanted to travel home, so instead of chancing being stranded, i was able to reschedule my Wednesday AM hearing and will leave tomorrow afternoon. It's not going to be awful tomorrow, but not good. We may get a foot of snow on Wed and Thurs. The cat sitter should be able to get here, but I'll put out extra dry food for the girls just in case she can't get here immiediately
-
I was invited to a party that started at 6:00 pm. I was way to grumpy to go then. My mood has improved considerably so I'll go soon. It's not a sit down dinner, so being late isn't a big deal. I have way too much to do to go, but I'm going to go for a little while. There will be lots of good food so I can at least catch a bite and say hello.
-
I have decided I really need to get out of here for a few days. The stress is starting to get to me, so it's a good thing I'm going a day early. Everything can wait for a few days.
-
Ok, time to freshen up a bit and go to the party.
-

148 deceased chorus members. What a tragedy.
-
DR TCB - thank you for the holiday greeting that arrived in today's mail!
-
CANNIBAL RUNS - that should be the name of something
It sounds gastricly unpleasant but speculations are endless.
So, double damn! just when Officer Dunne was telling his side of the shooting on THE CLOSER, Time Warner Cable froze the picture for a moment and whatever had everyone on the case talking about an important statement was completely lost by this pissed off viewer. Is this pixilation and freezing up any better than old cable systems?
-
i keep craving a gingerbread man cookie, i wonder why ;) i keep reminding myself how difficult it is to find a tasty one. i do remember getting some on our ny walking tour that were pretty good. i believe the bakery was located next door to the brownie place, or was it the same place?
-
I hate this T-Mobile jingle, "And if you wanna be me, be me"; what the hell has that to do with a phone? Would I give anyone permission to ne me? Maybe if I had a great contract, Brad Pitt played me, and i were paid a million damned dollars. Jeez.
THE CLOSER is realy good tonight. I love this show.

This freezing up of the TV screen is the worst it has been since TV in the 60s. I am certainly glad that we upgraded our entire broadcasting system.

You are very welcome, Ginny. I really worried about the proper way to address the envelope.

This ATC post seemed to scream out for a parody, whether it turns out to be true or not.
Author of Wicked claims economic downturn has hurt him fiscally
Posted by: EricL212 01:54 pm EST 12/19/09
Gregory Maguire claims to have been hurt by the economic downturn, hard to imagine that could be true with 7 world wide productions of Wicked running to sold out houses.
So:
("Crying Poverty" - to the tune of "Defying Gravity")
Something has changed my spending
My income’s not the same
I must take lower paychecks
And the downturn is to blame
I don’t have much in savings
My pockets aren’t deep
I must adjust my cravings
Life does not come cheap
And that is why
I’m crying poverty
No it’s no lie
I’m crying poverty
My income is way down!
I'm through my credit limits
My banker tells me so
Don’t even ask for change
I’ll simply have to tell you no!
The money used to come in
But now the cash cow’s lost
And now it’s time for slummin’
I must buy at cost!
Why won’t you buy
My crying poverty
My home’s a sty
I am crying poverty
My income is way down:
Unlimited
My credit was unlimited
My spending used to be so very very free
Everywhere we gandered
Gold had been my standard
Now with this economy
Oh screw that, I
Am crying poverty
It’s true that I
Am crying poverty
The poorest guy in town!
And nobody will give me cash
They even repossess my trash
So chatters please don’t put me down!
Ah - ah - a- a
-
I love your Crying Poverty parody, Fred.
-
DR Vixmom - You're Christmas tree must be quite beautiful. I bet Vixdad got a few extra homemade cookies for all his hard work.

Through a $200-million joint venture with Norman Lear's Act III Communications and other partners, Village Roadshow plans to open as many as 30 luxury theaters nationwide over the next five years. Future locations include Austin, Texas, and Scottsdale, Ariz.,
...
Neat - Scottsdale for Kerry and Laura, Austin for Druxy.
der Brucer
Note to Laura - please take a picture of your $29 ticket stub
Yeah, but do they charge more for aisle seats?
-
SOUTH PACIFIC is indeed truly lovely in Blu Ray - and I am glad I spent the $20.
I felt the same way. I still don't like the color filters much at all, but for the first time ever, the texture of the colored filters in high definition was such that I wasn't totally put off by them.
-
Fave Susan Blackwell, of [title of show] fame, has been granted a regular "video" blog on Broadway.com (http://www.broadway.com/buzz/whats-susan-blackwell-side-by-side-by-broadways-best/)!!!!!!
This is great news. She is funny lady. I love her long time.
Thanks for sharing this news, DR DAW. I hadn't heard about this before.
-
I finished all of the bonus features on (500) DAYS OF SUMMER. The two stars and the director put together two really fun little items: a music video in pantomime of a bank robbery, and the two actors playing Sid and Nancy acting a scene from their (500) DAYS film. Both very funny. And the Sid and Nancy parody was done in 1080p. BTW, the two stars switched genders to play Sid and Nancy.
-
I skimmed through today's soap operas. There was nothing of interest on ATWT.
-
OLTL, of course, had our gay love triangle operating at full force with some nice kissing scenes between Oliver and Kyle.
-
Then I watched another episode of THE MENTALIST. This was the one where the head of a women's urban league was murdered while a group of her friends on her charity committee gossiped and clucked behind her back. Of course, secrets come out about the murdered woman that lead to more murders, and it's just very entertaining.
-
Next I didn't feel like watching a movie, so I put in BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL and watched the segment on 1930-42. I was hoping LADY IN THE DARK was mentioned (I couldn't remember if it was or not) but it wasn't.
-

Wonderful photo, DR elmore!! It must have been a terrific concert.
148 stars. How sad.
-
I completely echo DR MATTH's opinion of the EPICS "special" on TCM last night. Although it is to be expected, since the one on "Thrillers" was pretty lame as well.
I think I will skip future Original Programming of this nature. Not well done at all, it was interesting to see and hear Fraser Heston and the son of Samuel Bronston - but mostly it was a blah!
DITTO! What a horrid experience!
-
Then I started looking at the lengthy series of interviews cut from the final broadcast edition, and those are really fascinating little tidbits of personal stories with Mary Rodgers and Cy Feurer and Jo Loesser and Jerry Herman and Kitty Carlisle et al talking about the shows and personalities of that era. There are almost two hours of these unused interviews on this disc alone.
-
I concluded my viewing with tonight's episode of THE CLOSER. I was pretty much "in on the twist" pretty early, but it was still very entertaining. Kyra and Mary make GREAT adversaries. There was an AWFUL lot of hollering in this episode.
-
Hmmmmmmmmmmm......I got the SOUTH PACIFIC Blu Ray today - I may watch it this evening.
I like SOUTH PACIFIC now that there's a blu-ray than I ever did before. Still, I don't like the opening structure one single bit. . .I still think it works better if you meet Nellie and Emile right off the bat. . .
-
I'm heading down to bed now.
Good night!
-
Julie - And the munchkins can gather round at the end pointing at gregory Maguire and saying "lookit, he wrote Wicked" before the Ah-ah-ah
i actually may change the next to last line to "I even must sweep up the trash" so that he can have a broom in his hand like Elphaba does.
-
Oh yes. Even better!
-
I am home. The party was great fun. I'm watching the weather and it sounds like tomorrow afternoon will be the perfect window between the freezing drizzzle and the heavy snow, so I should be able to get there without any problem
-
Better go, I have a few things to find tongiht so I don't forget them tomorrow
-
Deb, your daughter is BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thanks for the lovely card.
-
I'm sure I'll have to have another couple later this evening.
I didn't realize you were a swinger, BK?
-
SOUTH PACIFIC is indeed truly lovely in Blu Ray - and I am glad I spent the $20.
How did Ken Clark look in high definition?
-
DR Ben -- I hope you and Anthony had a really great time at the volunteer party tonight.
-
Had a lovelier than lovely dinner with Miss Juliana A. Hansen. We went to the Studio Cafe. We had lots of catching up to do and we did it. Then we came back here and watched Gremlins on Blu and Ray. She had one of Laura's superb cookies and loved it, and she also had her first Cherry Ripe, which she also loved. She's gone now and I'm relaxing.
-
I'd guess BLU-RAY FOR HOLLYWOOD has already been done.
-
I'm exhausted. Tomorrow, other than perhaps getting the Ants booklets signed by the composer, I have nothing planned at all - I do have to do my Do shopping in the evening.
-
Good Evening!
Well... I got a call earlier that a couple of my friends decided to meet up at Carmine's on the UWS for a "before everyone goes out of town" holiday dinner, so... I joined them. Needless to say, I now do not have to eat for at least another three days. -And I got sent home with the leftovers too!
*And since the waiter spilled a glass of wine while he was serving up the appetizers, they comped out dessert - chocolate chip bread pudding (sooooo good!) - and post-dinner coffees.
-
SOUTH PACIFIC is indeed truly lovely in Blu Ray - and I am glad I spent the $20.

Does Blu-Ray still look better with your nosed pressed up against the TV screen?
