Title: A WRITING JAG, A WRITING TEAR, A WRITING BINGE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were on a jag, a tear, AND a binge, and now it is time for you to post until the writing cows come home.

Just had the most interesting telephonic call, which led to another interesting telephonic call.  As you know, we're prepping our first release of 2010, and it's a title I was happy to release, even though it's been out on CD (oop for some years now, though).  I just wasn't sure how many sales we'd have, although I knew ours would sound much better and be a MUCH better presentation.  The original LP release of this score had been a re-recording - the original film tracks have never been available, but we were going to include about four or the film tracks as bonus material, since we would be able to get those four tracks completely clean from the laserdisc release of the film.  So, that made it special.  But this phone call has turned what would be a good release into a potential release of the year for fans of this film (and they are legion) - I am being Fed Exed a CD of the complete original score - only a little of it in stereo, but the rest in excellent mono, all 76 minutes of it.  So, this is suddenly going to become a two CD set, like we did for How To Murder Your Wife.  This is REALLY exciting news and boy does it start Kritzerland off in the best possible way for 2010.

This is exciting, BK!  Can't wait to find out what it is!  I assume that you'll have to raise the price for this 2-CD set?

This is from yesterday:
It's interesting to read about the cold that DRs Dakota and Cillaliz are facing.

I guess it's not so cold here. We often have a windchill of -20 but that is Celsius. I can't even imagine how cold -40F is.

Actually, -40°F is the same as -40°C (http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/tempfc.htm).  Interesting, huh?

....I got my mail...finally.  It was AT the annex all the time.  And I only found out when I intercepted my local carrier as he was leaving my condo complex this morning.

Sigh.

Good morning, all! I was up at 7:15 because I have a lot of work to accomplish today and I have to be out and about around 11:30. I need to be at Toyland around noon to return some books, and bring a few back, for my LADY OF THE SLIPPER bibliography. I've also got to begin a biliography for Russell Warner's edition of OH BOY!
This show is forcing me to make a trip to the Amherst College Library at some point in January or February, much as I'd like to put it off until April or May, and I need to figure out how to get there!

So, that's my day. It was wonderful to see the beautiful slender vixmom and the lovely Vixter yesterday, and what a treat to see Greg and DR edisaurus two days in a row! I'm glad they got to see RAGTIME, although I was really hoping for a return to Finian so Greg could see it!

Since this is a free-for-all day, I hope you will not mind a COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

One of my publishers has sent me some overstock copies of two (2) of my older books.  They are:

1. CHEYENNE WARRIOR: The Original Screenplay with Author Commentary.  The 1994 filming of this script with Kelly Preston, Pato Hoffmann, Dan Haggerty and Bo Hopkins is the movie of which I'm most proud.

2. NOBODY DROWNS IN MINERAL LAKE was my first novel, published in 1999.  It's a mystery-thriller, set in Central Washington State and is somewhat autobiographical.

If you'd be interested in having a signed copy of one or both of these, I'm selling them for $10.00 each (including shipping within the USA) or $16.00 for both (including shipping).  Payment via PayPal is fine.

The PayPal address is: druxy@ix.netcom.com

Thanks for reading this, and I now return you to your regular programming.

Last night DR Jane wrote about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo:

Quote
i like that the story doesn't unravel in the usual manner.  i think book 2 is more complex than 1.  i read them a good time apart.  after you are done with book 2 you could begin reading it in french and see how it goes.  from what you have said i think you might be better off waiting until may.

I probably will wait until may.  If the book had originally been written in English then i would 100% wait until may. But since they are both translations i may just look at book 3 in French and see how complicated it is.

I wonder if book 1 is so complex because of the translation. I never really thought of that before. But i wonder if it is very hard to translate some of the words that were originally used.

There is snow outside. Although it doesn't look like as much as it was supposed to be (10cms). Although i really have no idea how much actually fell.

I think we will have another 3cms today, which isn't bad.

Good morning!

The deep freeze has arrived. It's VERY cold here, and it's only getting up to 35 today. COldest weather of the new century here, but I bundled up this morning and took my walk as usual. Because I was weighed down with a heavy jacket and gloves, the walk was harder than usual, especially that last half which is ALL uphill, but I survived and will do it again tomorrow morning.

I'll be continuing with GLEE today as I try to get through the remaining episodes in the set. I likely won't get to the bonus features until tonight (one reason is because I'll likely rewatch some of my favorite numbers of the second half of the season thus far like "Jump!" "Imagine," and "True Colors" plus their triumphant numbers at the Sectionals contest.

I should have some time off this week. I still have the DVD version of THE MARINE 2 which I'll get to tomorrow, but that'll be an easy day since I've already written up the movie and the bonuses. Just have to check out which bonuses made it to the standard DVD release.

I am expecting one Fox film this week: CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2, not exactly something I'm waiting with baited breath to see. (I never saw it in theaters, on DVD, or paycable).

So, the week's workload should be pretty light. Later in the week, I'll start on those Criterion releases (CHE on DVD and Blu-ray, PARIS TEXAS, ROSSELLINI'S WAR FILMS).

DR DtM - The Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that you are more interested in reading than in writing, even though writing intrigues you.  What others think of you gives you pause about what you say - though NOT about what you think.  You also see what you do for a living as a practical drudgery rather that is stifling much of your creativity.

Dixie Bell and I walked the front yard, well, she ran, I walked quickly to keep up with her.  She did one round through the front, two rounds through the side then ran up the driveway to the back door.  Even a husky knows it's cold outside.

New news:  last night I watched a motion picture on blu-ray (courtesy of Netflix) entitled THE BROTHERS BLOOM.  Even though I am not a fan of Adrien Brody, I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky little movie.  I thought, from reading the synopsis, that it would be quite a lot like DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, but it's not.  It's a rather subdued comedy, with a really interesting screenplay and a very fine performance from Rachel Weisz as well as a stunning cameo from Maximilian Schell.  I recommend it.

It is the last day -- SOB! -- of my vacation which began Dec. 9.

Just the thought of going back makes me want to extend the whole thing by one week!

Happily, I have more than enough vacation time to do such a thing.

Unhappily, it would be unconscionable to ask for, much less expect, such an extension.

Perhaps I can take Friday off instead....hmmmmmm!

Last night, I watched "Kings of the Sun" on my DVR.

What a very odd film.

Yul Brynner is magnificent, as usual.

George Chakiris, however, is a mess, IMO.  And that HAIR!  Merciful heavens.  He is a Mayan king, yet he has "Bernardo hair" to which the hair stylist affixed a little black pony tail/topnotch.

Everyone else looks relatively convincing, but Chakiris' hair "done him in" at every turn. especially during his fight scenes when the topnotch is flopping around furiously while the rest of his hair is sprayed fast to a fare-thee-well.  Ah, vanity and the notion that one's signature "do" must never be tampered with.

The score by Elmer Bernstein makes a valiant attempt to enoble/engage/endear but it was a hopeless cause, I fear.

I can say this:  The Bernstein re-recording of the score (possibly the last thing he finished before his death) in no way matches the original recording in pacing or excitement.  It makes me wonder if this soundtrack score is something BK might someday stumble across and take a chance upon.

This movie has always been a guilty pleasure of mine ever since I first saw it in the theatre.  A lot of it is wonderfully silly; but, as you say, Yul Brynner comes off pretty good.

In a few minutes, wife Sandy and I will be departing for Green Pastures to indulge in the world's greatest Sunday Brunch.

This unbelievable restaurant in Austin occupies what was once the estate of John Henry Faulk and his family.

Faulk, as you may know, was a TV personality, blacklisted during the McCarthy era and defended by attorney Louis Nizer.  The story of his case was told in a book & TV movie, FEAR ON TRIAL.  George C. Scott was Nizer & William Devane was Faulk.

We were introduced to this place the first time we visited Austin, back in June of 2008.  It's very pricey (but worth it). so we've only been back there once since.

However, since they were closed on the 1st (my wife's birthday), this will be a belated birthday treat.

 :)

Free-for-all Day

I know we have had this as a topic of the day before, but since BK brought it up;  What is everyone's favorite Stephen King film adaptation?

I think my choice would have to be THE STAND.  It is a miniseries, rather than a film, but I think it is the perfect length to cover that huge and complicated story.

My favorite King adaptation is The Dead Zone, which, save for one scene, I find superb.  Remove the one scene and it would ALL be superb.  I also really like Carrie.  The Shining is a film I now like very much, but it's really not a good adaptation of the novel.

I've talked about the scene ad nauseum - it's the scene with Martin Sheen and his henchman where they threaten the newspaper man.  It gives away the fact that Sheen is a creep way too demonstrably - without that scene, you don't know for sure and that's much better.

Yes, and a heat wave would have put her back on the board for another three years.

Monkey did enjoy the movie at The Byrd, although, I think Monkey was more intrigued by the chandeliers,  and the grand piano and harp in the "boxes".

Has monkey attended any Broadway productions?

Just spent the last ninety minutes making adjustments and fixes on what I wrote yesterday.  I think it seems to be okay, and I fleshed out a few things and added some descriptive detail to a few things.  Again, I'm trying to just do a highlights of a whole year, and move along to the book proper, but, as I've said, so many seeds were planted in that year that I have to talk about them.  Then I wrote two new pages, and will probably write another two to four pages, since I wrote so many yesterday.  Then I'll probably get them to muse Margaret tomorrow.

Hmmm...very interesting, DR JRand.  I'll need to ponder on this...

Yep, today is my last day of vacation, too.  And I do not feel like going back tomorrow at all.  I can honestly say that I do not miss my work (though I do miss some of the people I work with.)  So the Dream-O-Matic 6000 is not off the mark.  Ah, well...

My favorite Stephen King movie adaptation is "Misery."

I don't think I've ever been completely satisfied by any King film adaption.  Some come close, like MISERY, FIRESTARTER, CUJO and THE DEAD ZONE, but miss the mark either through casting or story tweaks.  The cheesey special effects do in THE STAND and THE LANGOLIERS.

I did like the STORM OF THE CENTURY miniseries a lot, but that was written for television.

The internets have been inoperative here for most of the past 24 hours.  Yikes!

We saw AVATAR yesterday.  This was my first experience with "Real D" and I was so happy it didn't bother me or give me a bad headache like the older red/blue glasses always did.  I did have just a very slight headache afterward, but nothing horrible.  (Betsy had a really bad one, on the other hand, but she's not sure it was due to the glasses).

I also thought the film could have been trimmed by at least 15 minutes, and I guessed the ending probably an hour before we got to it, but otherwise I thought it was quite a spectacular achievement.  The one thing that made me laugh repeatedly was how James Horner ripped off the first two notes/harmonies of the second 8 of "My Heart Will Go On", ultimately resolving it so that phrase was v, IV, I (rather than i, bVII, bVI).  Betsy and I both commented afterward it was a lot like "Dances With Wolves," which evidently echoes what Ebert said.

I've written eight pages today, which is probably enough, but I may do a couple more later.  I'm about five pages away from the end of the prologue, and if muse Margaret thinks it should be shorter, I have two specific places to trim.

I got a strange e-mail from someone I didn't know who was claiming to be a friend of the brother of one of my best friends.  I had a bad feeling when I read it, so I quickly called my friend.  She called me back about a half hour later.  Her brother died, apparently on New Year's Day and laid in his apartment for two days before he was found.  He lived in Kansas City, Missouri.  She has no idea how she can afford to pay to have his body sent back here.  She has no money, nor did he, but the one thing he didn't want was to be buried in Missouri.

I remember an issue of "Better Homes & Gardens" - or it might have been "Family Circle" (back when both magazines were not so dumbed-down like they are today - that described how to make your own felt panels from dryer lint.  -Since, apparently, felt is basically compressed lint.  They even encouraged people to ask laundromats for lint from their dryers.  Alas, now that I think of it, lint isn't usually the only thing you find in the lint traps, so... ::)

Tomorrow is the big office move so I went down tonight to see if they finished the carpet.   Well, they sort of have. There are still things that need to be done.  The carpet all appears to be stretched in, the trim isn't done in most of the rooms, but they listened to me and it's done in the rooms where there will be really heavy furniture that will need to be close to the walls.

I'm hoping someone runs the vacuum before we get started in the morning... and since I plan to start moving boxes at 7:00 AM, I'm not so sure that will happen....but....all in all it looks great

I should say, the cleaning people clean at night and I was there around 6:00 PM, so it's entirely possible that it will be cleaned tonight.  I am toying with putting my vacuum in the car just in case.  I know that isn't my job, but I'm the one who wants to start so early in the AM.   It's really because the movers I'm paying by the hour will start at 8:30 AM, so I'm hoping to have all the boxes moved up there before they arrive. Then they can just move the furniture.

Probably a Minority Opinion but I thought AVATAR was just OK. It's a beautiful film,no doubt,but the beauty became boring. It had alot of action but the action eventually became boring, And The Movie is way too long. There aren't too many Movies that I can say this about-but I don't think I could ever see this movie a second time.

Thank you for the movie report.  i've read similar complaints that it is too long.

i believe we are in the minority with our opinion of "500 days of summer"  after all the hype we were very disappointed.  we love charming quirky films and felt, for the most part, this missed the boat.

We just finished watching 500 DAYS OF SUMMER.  We enjoyed it.  It was different, not quite what we expected.

When Clark Gregg read the "Roses are red" greeting card, I must admit that I laughed so hard that we had to pause the movie for 5 minutes.

What can I say?

Quote
CNN) -- A terminal at the Newark, New Jersey, airport was closed Sunday night after a man walked through the wrong side of a checkpoint exit, the Transportation Security Administration said.

Police are seeking the individual, who walked from the public side to the sterile side, said TSA spokeswoman Anne Davis. No flights were allowed to leave from Terminal C Sunday evening, she said.

Authorities are reviewing video from airport cameras. They are not sure whether the man was once on the sterile side and went back, or if he never went through screening, Davis said.

Other travelers who had reached the sterile area after going through checkpoints are being moved back to the public area to be re-screened, she said.

The incident caused arrival delays and mainly affected Continental Airlines, which is the airport's largest tenant.

Newark Liberty International Airport, which is located about 15 miles from Manhattan, is the second-largest hub for Continental.

The airport handles roughly 35 million passengers a year.

CNN's Susan Candiotti and Ross Levitt contributed to this report.

After switching out my DVR/cable box last week and getting it all plugged in and re-connected, I started going through some of my favorite channels. ABC - check! NBC - check! CBS - check! Fox - check! Travel Channel - check! TLC - check! Food Network... "If you would like to receive this channel, please call..."

Hmm...

So, I started clicking through all the other channels, and, the Food Network was the only channel that was not coming through!?!? -I really thought it was some sort of sick joke. ;)  Thankfully, after placing a call to Time-Warner's customer service, they were able to restore FoodTV on my system.

Whew!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Presentation Vibes for DR edisaurus and Greg Today! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry we didn't go, DR Elmore. I have to say it's my fault; I have always wanted to see Ragtime on Broadway and it looked like it was my only chance. Greg and I both love the movie and I'm a fan of the book (I used a lot of the film score in the temp track for my current film) and it amazed us both how the last 3 films I'd done all seem to have themes similar to RAGTIME...immigration, racism, anarchism, worker's rights. Since the producer we're working with thinks that these themes in our film are boring, it was nice to see a theatre full of people responding to them. I only wish the producer could have been there. Oh well...
We had a good crowd; a British playwright/screenwriter, a psychiatrist, Ken Burns' longtime producer, Lynn Novick, and another documentary maker and a few spouses, plus the writer and his wife, the producer and his wife, and my partner Peter and myself. We got a lot of good comment and slashed thru the first half of the script. We'll try to get thru the rest tomorrow morning. I think I will need a drink at dinner....
There were by number a lot of bonus features on the GLEE final disc, but in actual minute count, they were mostly very short indeed. I did enjoy one 12-minute look behind the scenes at casting where we see the actual auditions of Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, and Chris Colfer.
But much of the content of the others didn't amount to much at all. Disappointed.
So I'm taking care of this Persian cat and wondering how one could survive in the wild with such a teeny little mouth!
I watched two NCIS episodes from last season's box set. In the first, Ducky gets stabbed in the hand by an angry foreigner who seemed to know him. Good episode.
The other one had a Navy captain blugeoned to death and then eviscerated. I have seen the episode several times before, but I honestly didn't remember who the murderer was until very late in the show, just as if I had never watched it before and was trying to figure out the guilty party's identity.
Next I remembered that I hadn't finished THE BAND WAGON which I had started watching several nights ago before I started on the GLEE box set. I went ahead and finished it from "Triplets" to the end of the movie.
Then I watched the making of documentary on THE BAND WAGON which was on the second disc in the set. A little sad knowing that Comden and Green are now gone. Is James Mitchell still with us? Michael Kidd is gone, I know, as is Cyd Charisse.
Then I started watching THE MEN WHO MADE THE MOVIES - VINCENTE MINNELLI. I saw it when it was originally broadcast and maybe only one other time since then. So great seeing that MADAME BOVARY clip with the great waltz sequence, one of Minnelli's most masterful achievements.
I didn't finish the documentary. I'll see if I have the time to finish it tomorrow.
Today I've watched "The Night Digger" (aka "The Road Builder") with Patricia Neal, Nicholas Clay and Pamela Brown, and "See No Evil" with Mia Farrow.  Both films were made in 1971.
This worst cook show is kind of cool. They take the worst of the worst and teach them to cook well enough to fool a food critic.  The cooks are excited about learning to cook
Of course, I'm wondering if some of these "worst cooks" are trying to be the worst.  -And that first elimination... Hmmm....
Still waiting to see who gets eliminated, but I'm not that impressed so far
And I need to start winding down myself.  I was going to take the 1:00am bus back to NYC tonight, but it's just too cold for some overnight travel tonight.  So, instead, I'll be on the 7:00am bus.  So...
Goodnight.
This was actually performed at my alma mater, Western Washington University, 20 years after I graduated.
Since people are putting up inspirational stuff from YouTube:  :)
Jan Horvath did a fun audio of the "Mrs. Bernie Madoff" version of the "Defying Gravity" take-off (called "Crying Poverty") - and we decided to just put it up very quickly while people are still talking about Madoff as one of the top stories of the decade.
Question:  Do you think we should identify that it's about Madoff in the heading, or let people come to it as a WICKED take-off and discover as they watch that it's about Mrs. Madoff?
I finished the prologue and just wrote the word Chapter One.  The introduction and prologue run forty-two pages, but that's manuscript, so it's not really that long.  We'll see what muse Margaret thinks.
I smoothed out a few things, and added a little more detail to a few descriptive passages, and will probably do some more of that tomorrow before giving the pages to muse Margaret.
