HYPNAGOGIC...

–adjective
1.  of or pertaining to drowsiness.
2.  inducing drowsiness.

Meaning...I'm off to bed, now.

Good night.

In the pet peeve phrase dept., (although I wasn't peeved) I used to work with someone who often used the phrase: "and yet but still" very quickly as though it was one word. Of course, we adopted it at our house, along with words like "chimbley' (chimney)  and then sometimes forget that they aren't real words/expressions and use them in front of strangers. A little embarassing...

DR DRUXY - I have seen all of those movies you mention - though some NOT in a long time.  SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE has a great pedigree from the original material.....but I like SHE'S BACK ON BROADWAY a lot better, Miss Mayo has a stronger leading man in Steve Cochran than Ronald Reagan....although Gene Nelson's dancing in both films helps a lot.

DR Jane, re: the pairs skating.

That is interesting that you and the NBC commentators thought team #2 made small mistakes. The CTV ones said they were perfect, but noticed that #1 missed their lift.

It is also interesting reading DRs MattH and RonP's comments about NBC. So for the west coast are they showing the exact same 8-midnight timeblock just delaying it?

I felt some frustrations last night. CTV was replaying stuff. TSN was showing curling (2 non-canada teams) and Rogers Sportsnet was showing hockey. And i really wanted to watch speed skating. The weird part is that it is one of canada's strongest sports. So i could not figure out why they were not showing it.

But apparently they can't switch out if they are in the middle of a game. Anyhow after one of the games ended they went back and quickly showed the prelim rounds and then showed the rest live. So it wasn't too bad.

I don't know if it's just me. But i can't stand when they show games that are 3 hours long.  I know hockey and curling are popular here.

COld again but also beautiful again. I probably should have worn a ski cap on my walk this morning, but the sun was coming up, and the windy conditions were only around for the first half of the walk (I did have the presence of mind to wear a heavy jacket).

TOD: My favorite spy movies:

Anything with Hitchcock that's spy related (NORTH BY NORTHWEST, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, THE LADY VANISHES) and that includes some films of his that are often disparaged: TORN CURTAIN and SABOTEUR.

COnnery's first three Bond films: DR. NO, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, GOLDFINGER.

Brosnan's first two Bond films: GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES.

Craig's first Bond film CASINO ROYALE

The three Matt Damon/BOURNE films (which I've been crushing on a lot lately).

THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD.

It's amazing how an entire day can evaporate without your realizing it. I felt as if I had been shot out of a cannon getting most of the rest of the magazine finished. Sent off the last corrections this morning and hopefully there will be a press run in the next day or two.

It hit the mid-60s here yesterday and was incredibly sunny, so soaking in some Vitamin D did good for body and soul. Wish I could send it north.

TOD:
Notorious (and not the biopic of the rapper)
The 39 Steps (the original)
The Lives of Others
The Tailor of Panama
The Constant Gardener

Thanks to DR Matt H: the new Casino Royale and the Spy Who Came in from the Cold
I'm sure there are more, but these are the only ones that come to a mind that is still half asleep.

And spy movies I hated: Anything with Austin Powers attached to it, the last couple of Tom Clancy movies.

When I got in last night after seeing - well, experiencing - the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall, I started to catch up on the posts I had missed over the past two days...

And that's when the past two days caught up with me...

It was one of those situations where I was so tired that I was contemplating just sleeping on the couch instead of making the effort to make it to my bedroom.  But I did make it to my bed and my bedroom, and eight hours later...

Aaahhhhh.... :)

As for commenting or not commenting on the machinations of this final season of "Lost"...

Well...

I really just want to watch it, and let the writers take me on whatever ride - or rides - they have devised.  I'd rather be surprised by every twist and turn, rise and (sudden) drop, rather than anticipate them and see them in the distance.
Title: Re: THE LOVELY DAY OFF

Which leads to a question for Ask BK Day...

Do you think a weekly series - such as "Lost" - could work in a two-hour format? -If budgets and scheduled were not an issue, of course.  Do you think there would be enough viewers each week to justify viewing a mini-movie each week over the course of 15-23 weeks?
Title: Re: THE LOVELY DAY OFF

DR George - When you saw Avenue Q last night, was there a slip of paper in the program indicating that "Gary Coleman's" understudy would be on?  I could have sworn that the current tour still had a female "Gary Coleman".  Otherwise...

Glad you enjoyed the show!

DR Jane, re: the pairs skating.

That is interesting that you and the NBC commentators thought team #2 made small mistakes. The CTV ones said they were perfect, but noticed that #1 missed their lift.

I saved the skates & will watch again.  I missed/forgot the commentator did mention the poor lift by #1.  They were very quiet about who they expected to win.  I think they knew it could go either way & personally preferred the skate of #2.  If I'm not mistaken #2 were awarded higher points for the free skate.

And, yes, last night's program by The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall was quite spectacular, imho.

The program:
Messiaen - "Les offrandes oubliées"
Liszt - Piano Concerto, No. 2 in A Major - with Jean-Yves Thibaudet as the soloist.
Strauss - "Ein Heldenleben"
Ravel - "Le jardin féerique" from "Ma Mère L'Oye" (as an encore)

The playing and sonority was truly beautiful throughout. The horns, the winds(!), the brass, the percussion... Wow!  And Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin truly crafted some wonderful interpretations of all the pieces on the program.  There were a few times when I was genuinely moved to tears - well, at least tearing up - by the quality of the music-making in the Hall last night.

*As and added bonus, my fried, Joe, was able to arrange for me to head backstage during intermission to see M. Thibaudet again.  It turned out to be a bit of a rushed meeting, but it was fun nonetheless, and it was nice getting see "J-Y's" diamond-studded dog-tag pendant up close... And get a picture too. ;)

Jeremy Abbott was petrified. I was surprised he was able to even get one skate in front of the other.
I felt terrible for him.  It was painful to watch.

We make a lot of fun of Johnny Weir, but he skated a beautiful program last night.

I was very surprised.
Quote
The Japanese had three superb skaters
They are, & I thought the one who returned after the knee injury is incredible.  He is currently my pick for the Gold.

Quote
Evan Lysecek was the best I've ever seen him. I didn't get a chance to see this short program at Nationals, but I was VERY impressed with how the choreographer had timed accents in his steps and body movements to the accents in "The Firebird" music. For once, those swinging arms fit the music he was skating to, so they didn't bother me at all and, in fact, enhanced what he was doing with the interpretation.
I'm not really familiar with him & was very impressed.  Right now I would give him the Silver.  I'll see if the swinging arm thing, which did fit well, bothers me during the free skate.  I didn't think he had a fake tan.  Doesn't he live in L.A?

I meant to mention this yesterday, but Tuesday night (the night of the men's short program), AMERICAN IDOL beat the Olympics over the course of their shared two hour time block by 5+ million viewers. That was a surprise.

Doesn't surprise me one bit.  This prime-time smorgasboard without defined sections where someone can say, "Oh, we'll tune in later to watch that" is very off-putting.  Since it's all tape-delayed anyway, their attempts to offer up a little bit of everything has viewers tuning in to program blocks that make sense to them...programming on other channels..

It would be like a network giving us 15 minutes of one program, then breaking away for 10 minutes of another program...a lookt at their daytime soaps in a recap...and then back to 10 more minutes of the first program.  Doesn't make sense that way, and neither do the games, each event of which is a complete program, be it trials, semi-finals or finals.   They could be blocked that way and offered to people to watch at specific times of the evening (or day).

I actually think that's a really good idea and someone should try it.  A series that's designed to last let's say two seasons, three tops.  Endgame in sight from the beginning so they don't go awry (even the writers/producers of Lost admit they've gone way awry a couple of times and wish they hadn't).  I'd be all for that, presuming it were done well.

A small plane has crashed into an office building in North Austin (I'm in South Austin.) that houses an IRS office.  They're saying that it could have been an intentional act.

And, I thought that Austin was supposed to be a peaceful city.

I was about to ask you about this, DR Druxy... Apparently, the pilot had set his house on fire this morning before heading to the airport... :-\  ???

In today's exciting genealogy news, I have spoken with the nice people at the Jewish cemetery outside of Toronto and they will be taking high res pics of my grandmother and grand-aunt's headstones (they're buried side by side) so that we can decipher the Hebrew.  Then I had a very long telephonic conversation with the Toronto Jewish archive, who will check their extensive cross referenced database and perhaps point me to some living relatives.

Do you have a DVR/PVR where you can start recording NBC but then just fastforward through the things that don't interest you.

This is exactly the way I feel. I'll go where ever they take me and trust that they won't let me down. At the end of the season/series, if they have, believe me, I'll scream to high heaven.

I only represented her while she and Howard Keel were doing a nightclub act together.  Howard stayed with me for over 10 years.

I'd see her from time to time, and she was always very warm and friendly.  Last time I saw her was at the Hollywood/Celebrity Show in Burbank about 3 years ago.

One of my most prized autographs (framed) is a lobby card of the "We Open in Venice" number from KISS ME KATE, signed by Grayson, Keel, Ann Miller and Tommy Rall, who was the hardest signature to get...because I didn't know him.

When I got in I watched WONDER BAR (Warner Archive release). Not the greatest quality. Kind of soft and contrast was weaker than it should have been.

Couldn't believe Al Jolson's first number: "Viva la France" was performed as if Eddie Cantor were doing it; not in Al's style at all. Wonder what THAT was all about.

And that blackface finale in heaven was VERY long and very unusual.

The dance double for Ricardo Cortez couldn't have been more obvious.

There was a slip of paper in the program, but I didn't read it. ::) I thought that it had to do with sponsors and other people who are supporters of the center, but I can check when I get home tonight.  I think I still have it.  Also, I didn't notice any kind of signage in the lobby indicating any understudies.

Okay, based on your recommendation, I've ordered SHE'S BACK ON BROADWAY, so if I don't like it, it's on you.

 ;D

Also, since Kathryn Grayson (and Merv Griffin) is in it, I ordered SO THIS IS LOVE.  Never seen that one either.

My birthday is this month and WHV has given me a 1 month 20% off certificate, so I might as well take advantage of it.

Maybe this sounds odd, but i just can't imagine anyone not being interested.

It may sound odd, but they really don't interest me in the least.

It doesn't sound odd at all. Believe it or not, people have different interests.

Well, I guess turnabout is fair play. The Olympics outscored AMERICAN IDOL's Top 24 show last night by 12 million viewers!

And not a figure skater in sight, either.

Must have been Shaun White and the promise of everyone seeing his new tricks.

That info wasn't mentioned when I read the news earlier :(

And this just turned up... Basically's it a suicide note... :(

Internet note posted by man linked to plane crash (http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/blotter/entries/2010/02/18/internet_note_posted_by_man_li.html)

I just read this.  Wow!

Wow is right, and I agree with just about every word of it and have said so for years.  Enough is enough and unfortunately our "new" government officials are doing nothing and will continue to do nothing but continue the status quo.  He was right - if what he calls the "American zombies" would wake up and realize the power that people have if they band together, then and only then would things change.  I've said for years if five million people said "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" and did not file tax returns you can bet your ASS that things would change.  They cannot put five million people in jail (or one million, or five hundred thousand) - if people would stop being complacent brainwashed sheep, things would change.  There, I've said it and I'm glad.

Wow, BK, I just threw my TV out the window!

Oy! A person I thought was a dear friend has proven that, no matter how friendly the exterior, she's out for my blood. Given that we've been friends for 25 years, it's very sad. It's been a very ugly day and I've learned one thing: when a drunk strokes your ego, remember they're drunk.

I'm just going to make a wild leap of faith here and assume this post is not about DR Ginny.   ;D

Sorry to hear the news about Ms Kathryn Grayson.

SO THIS IS LOVE is not her finest hour, DR DRUXY.....but she sings some fine songs.

I love LOVELY TO LOOK AT.....she sings "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".....and other such ditties......

Well if you like Virginia Mayo - you will like SHE'S BACK ON BROADWAY....and it's got an ersatz Broadway vs. Hollywood vibe that can entertain....AND Gene Nelson AND Steve Cochran.....dark and mean......but you know Virginia can GIVE as good as she gets.....her reaction to his denigration of her stage work is a pip.

It's a dream come to be.

MR BK sometimes - SOMETIMES - doing a NEWS SEARCH for a specific film on Google brings up a Variety review, but they are sometimes only capsules.

And sometimes you can get a Box Office magazine review that way, too.

You can search A LOT of Box Office Magazine issues from many years here.

But they are in NO PARTICULAR order!  :P

With the sports teams, when I have watched, I'm all for our home teams.  For the individual sports such as ice skating, I find myself rooting for the athlete's that excite me the most.  Granted, when it is an American winning the Gold it nice to hear our anthem played, especially when that person was Brian Boitano ;)

It's nice that people want to be the best at something.  I can understand that.  Whether it's rolling logs, collecting stamps, contorting one's face until it looks like the rear end of a constipated rhinoceros, there is always the potential for entering the record books.

Now, the Olympics is a big deal in the sense that they are held every four years and feature (arguably) the best in the various sports disciplines being celebrated...winter sports and summer sports.

But, frankly....outside of a few of these sports, I'm not really interested in watching the events.  The human interest, however, is another matter.  The athletes' personal stories...the struggles, the sacrifices, the years of honing their crafts...these are what make watching them perform memorable to me.

I couldn't care less about cross-country skiing or a host of the other Nordic "original winter" disiciplines that were adopted when the Winter Olympics was established.  But tell me a great story about one of the competitors and I'll watch.

What these Olympics have lacked, for me, is a sufficiency of personal interest.   I detest media hype about who's favored to win Gold, blah-blah-blah.

Lindsey Vonn fell today and was disqualified.  Lindsey Jacobellis fell two days ago and her four-year dream of redemption for a faux pas in Torino was ended.  Boo and Hoo. I know their hearts were broken.  I feel bad about that.  It was someone else's turn, though...becasue someone ALWAYS wins a medal.  And that's what sports are...games in which someone wins and someone loses.

The Olympics have been, for far too long, a heavily politicized exercise in nationalistic fervor.  The athletes cease being their own selves and become national properties.  When they falter they are reviled, some of them, if sports analysts think they made stupid mistakes.  After all, didn't those athletes sacrifice everything to be judged/criticized by a media hack? And some athletes who qualified to participate, but who have no delusions about being in contention for a medal, are the objects of media attention because MAYBE they might pull a HUGE upset.  No pressure intended, of course.

Going for an Olympic medal is a lofty goal.  I, for one, feel the presentation of the sports should be done with dignity, respect for the athletes, and with a mind toward the fact that the public doesn't know much about most of them in terms of difficulty, the interest they hold for the participants, etc.   I don't get any sense of "dignity" associated with Olympics presentations.   Something is missing and I cannot quite put my finger on it.

Oh...well....MAYbe it's because I'm just not watching beyond the few events that interest me this time around.  Too many other things in life seem more important to me than someone's having put life on hold for four more years to see if they can redeem bad judgment made at the last Olympics.

They were having a lot of trouble with the long track's ice. That was one of the reasons they were cutting away to other things here. Could that be part of it?

Shortly I shall be on my way to have a light and I do mean light supper with Miss Alet Taylor.  This morning I had some bacon and eggs, so the most I'm going to eat is either a turkey sandwich, or maybe just a nice plate of fries and/or onion rings.  We shall see.

DR George - When you saw Avenue Q last night, was there a slip of paper in the program indicating that "Gary Coleman's" understudy would be on?  I could have sworn that the current tour still had a female "Gary Coleman".  Otherwise...

Glad you enjoyed the show!

*Although, I still miss the "we exchanged them for cash" line. ;)

I'll be seeing it before long in Sioux City.  I'll make sure to post whether it's a man or woman.  I'm looking forward to seeing it, despite all my trips to New York while it was on Broadway, I've never seen it

Ditto and ditto. :)

BK, have you been watching any of the Olympics or do they not interest you?

Maybe this sounds odd, but i just can't imagine anyone not being interested.

It may sound odd, but they really don't interest me in the least.

I would think that at least certain sports would interest each person (they could be different for every person).

But even if i hated every single sport at the Olympics, to me it's a matter of national pride. I just can't imagine not caring.

How can watching the Olympics have anything to do with national pride!

USA! USA! USA! USA!   I have no idea ;)

Question today on ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER?

The Wabash River starts in Ohio and travels through what state on its way to Illinois?

Grown up's answer:  Uh...Colorado?

Oh, dear lord! But, actually not THAT big a surprise. Geography seemed to be something that totally escaped many of my students during my years of teaching. I've told this story before, but once I found out that my students couldn't find simple locations on a U.S. or world map, I went right to the library and asked for as many pull down maps as my room could accommodate. Afterwards, we NEVER read a story with a particular setting that a map didn't get pulled down and we had a little mini-geography lesson. I also tried to work in as many names of places in grammar work as I could so we could talk about them during a grammar lesson.

Next, I've been meaning to transfer the long program performances of Ryan Bradley, Adam Rippon, Johnny, Wvan, and Jeremy from the National Championships onto a DVD-R, and I finally got around to doing that tonight. Those two hours will be precious real estate on the DVR recording another 4-hour Olympic evening tonight.

If I continue to have the weekend off, I'll transfer the short and long programs of the best skaters onto a DVD-R for keeping at some point this weekend. That will allow me to delete these and have room for the ladies' events next week.

Summer-style sports are internationally performed in all climates.  Winter sports are not.  The original Olympics featured classical sports that are considered Summer ones and some remain part of the Summer Games.

Wow!

Yup. :(

I've got a friend who works in that building. I'm just glad she had the week off. Peaceful vibes for all affected.

Did you know she was off before reading the news?  It is nice when you know immediately someone is safe.

DR Jane, I knew about Deb beforehand. She had told me she was headed to Memphis. But she called later and was, needless to say, quite shaken up by what had happened.

Good Evening!

Well... There was about a total of 65 minutes of music on tonight's concert by the New York Philharmonic.  The concert started at 7:30, and the final downbeat was around 9:05.  Alas, tonight's program was interesting, but not exactly engaging.  Well, not played engagingly.  Additionally, the pianist in Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand had a couple of finger-slips... and he had the score in the piano - he turned the pages with his right hand.  In a nutshell, tonight's concert was like a bad date: short and boring.  ::)

Sorry to hear about Kathryn Grayson, if only because she was one of the last of the MGM stars from its heyday. I agree with DR JRand that "Lovely to Look At" was full of some of her best work. I liked her version of "Yesterdays," as I recall. The movie was not great, but she seemed more suited to Kern than many of the other composers she sang.

And congrats, BK, on the deal. Looking forward to learning the new titles.

The men's figure skating finals is history.  It has been over for about 16 minutes.

We're getting tape-delayed women's half-pipe when both coasts could have seen the men's finals "live" and been done by six minutes past midnight.  Too bad men's figures are considered unworthy of prime time focus.

No telling when NBC will "get around to" airing tonight's finals.  Nothing thus far.
