Title: OPEN SESAME
Post by: bk on September 05, 2010, 11:59:59 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were open and had a slight sesame flavor, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently saying "Open sesaMOO."

WOW! (http://www.kritzerland.com/sugar.htm)  Even on the samples, the difference between the original (even fixed up) mix and the Kimmel special on disc 2 is amazing!  The original sounded like it was recorded in a tunnel and the new version sounds like it was recorded in an actual recording studio.  You can also hear a lot more of Tony Roberts' vocalizing during the dance break of "Beauty That Drives Men Mad."  I can't wait to hear the entire album! ;D

Amazing, isn't it - the new mix sounds incredible, especially when you A/B it - it was thrilling to do.

Good morning, all! I sept later than i intended, but I have one last day of freedom before I'm back to the grind and I am enjoying myself. I had another repeating dream last night but it's now lost to wherever dreams go.

Today I'll see if one of the music dealer sites I've been using as a pricing guide is no longer freezing so I can finish pricing the Wagner and Shostakovich editions for the McGlinnventory. If the site is good, i'll finish my price list and work on my Herbert reports. I missed a couple of topics last night so I'll catch up now:

Favorite Disney is ALICE IN WONDERLAND/

Happy 90th Birthday tomorrow to the father of DR FJL!

Screwball comedies? Outside of MY MAN GODFREY, I can't think of any at the moment.

When I was a kid, I remember stumbling across Ted Sennett's wonderful book on screwball comedies called "Lunatics and Lovers." It was in the day before VHS and cable, so I did my best to find somebody screening each and every movie I remember being mentioned in the book. I dragged my parents out to park amphitheaters for free showings of "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" and to open film classes for "Nothing Sacred" or "Bringing Up Baby." Then a revival movie house opened near our home and it began showing some of the greats that never played TV.

I still love seeing the old ones and have found many of the modern attempts to recapture that charm to be bloated messes ("What's Up Doc?" is the only exception I can think of).

I don't recall seeing many that I didn't like, so favorites among favorites would have to include:

The Thin Man (William Powell was my favorite among the leading men of screwball comedy)
Libeled Lady
Joy of Living
My Man Godfrey
Twentieth Century (Carole Lombard was a genius)
The Lady Eve
It Happened One Night

Channel 13 showed "Bringing Up Baby" about three weeks ago, and I found Katharine Hepburn so annoying that, once she drove off in Cary Grant's car, I got pissed at him for letting an insane, thoroughly obnoxious person walk all over him and I turned it off. I never care to see the remainder.

Due to a technical error I have failed in my attempt to record TCB's episode of HIGH SCHOOL STORIES which I thought was to air today at 3pm.

"Kooky" characters such as those played by Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby and almost ALL of the Shirley MacClaine collection drive me completely crazy and I can't stand to watch them.....

MacClaine is the main reason I have never seen THE APARTMENT all the way through....can't stand it......just can't stand it....

I missed yesterday's posts; I went to Athens, GA to do a 10 mile walk with my best friend. We plan to do a half-marathon walk in October. What I didn't know was that it was going to be a hike on very rough terrain. I didn't have the right shoes for it and by the end I felt like I was on the Bataan death march. My DR was out of town but got home about an hour before me and gave me a nice, much-needed foot rub.

It was DS Zach's birthday yesterday, so I was E&T.

My sister emailed me asking if I had our parents' marriage certificate, as she was applying for British citizenship (our Dad was born in England).  I told her I didn't, but asked her what was going on, and she is contemplating moving back there (she lived outside of London for many years) if the US continues its wave toward radical conservatism.  DW Wife Betsy wants us to go, too.  ;)

Happy belated birthday to DS Zach.

I too want to move to England where I have told dogs are permitted in pubs.   Unfair though that only children of men can become citizens, not children of women.  At least that is what I have been told.

Dogs are permitted in the pub at the end of my street; well, on the deck, anyway. The Thirsty Dog tavern, a few blocks the other direction, has a special dog patio and "Milk Bone Happy Hour"!

Most places don't permit dogs on a deck if it has a railing around it.  Starbucks has a deck we can sit on, it can also depend on the location of the deck.  The rules are truly absurd where we can sit with Sherlock & where we can't.

Due to a technical error I have failed in my attempt to record TCB's episode of HIGH SCHOOL STORIES which I thought was to air today at 3pm.

My Comcast listings do not show it airing at that time, so I am guessing it aired at 3am.

Hopefully, DR George will come to my rescue.

I am recording all the episodes (just to make sure) at this very moment. :)

I keep reminding myself how improved I am even if lately the improvements are more subtle then obvious.  I gotta say though after nine months I expected more, or I should say less-as in pain.  Then I tell myself there are plenty of people who wish they had as "little" pain as I have.

Vixdad put on a Perry Mason marathon - these are not the original but  from the 1990's -

some of the dialog was so bad

investigator: " the store said they delivered a freezer for Mary Jones to this address"

Priest 'A freezer?  This is  church not a restaurant!"

Does anyone know if Lalo Schifrin's unused score for The Exorcist has ever been released on cd?

Yes, but I believe that it was only available in the laserdisc box set.  I have it.

It has been a long while since I have had a major break-through at therapy.  I am happy to report I'm still, slowly, getting more stretch and mobility with my shoulder.  I was very startled since it has been hurting more, which is a sign it is also getting a little stronger.

Very good news, Jane!

Finished "Anna Karenina" and started listening to the musical version, which isn't so much a flop as it is boring. It dumbs down the material in ways that all too easy to understand, much like the recent discussion of writing musicals according to committee, rather than doing what's right by the material.

The title character of the book is brilliant in ways that her husband, who has been called brilliant but isn't, cannot appreciate. She knows everything -- and what she doesn't, she's willing to learn. She takes an interest in her lover's affairs and becomes so well-versed in them that he has to come to her for advice, something her husband never would have thought of doing. She's also a capable writer of children's literature in addition to knowing all about architecture, agriculture, birth control and so on. Her affair with Vronsky isn't only about sex; it's about her finding someone who awakens all of her interests, intellectually as well as sexually. By limiting her character to merely the sexual aspect of her nature, the musical robs her of her greatness -- and subsequently the material's greatness.

What's left is a chorus of people singing "On a train ..."

I saw the show on Broadway shortly after it opened and was disappointed. Hearing the score again, even though it is sung by Melissa Erico, Brian D'Arcy James, Marc Kudish, Gregg Edelman, Kerry Butler and Jeff McCarthy, doesn't improve with time.

What happened is that our new library director Mike was the Manager-Administrative Services for the library.  That position will not be filled.  They've created a new Business Manager position that will take some of the Manager-Administrative Services duties, and Mike will keep some of the duties as library director.  Because they're restructuring the business office, the current Accountant (Rick, who had been given some other duties of the Manager-Administrative Services position while Mike was interim director) will just be moved into the Business Manager position (no interview necessary).  My supervisor in Acquisitions (also named George) has a BS in Accounting, so he'll also just be moved into the Accountant position.  Got that?  It's the Acquisitions Supervisor position that's been advertised and that I'm applying for...the supervisor of my current position.

Everyone's moving up!  Rick, George and I are all at the top of our current respective pay ranges and have no more annual increments (a 3% pay raise on the annual anniversary of one's hiring date for up to 12 years), other than whatever C.O.L.A. we get.  Rick and George will now be in the middle of their new ranges, and if I get George's job, I'll be in the middle of that pay range and get an annual increment again (for another five or six years). :)
