Title: TO COIN A PHRASE
Post by: bk on September 06, 2010, 11:54:10 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had phrases which were coined, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, to coin a phrase.

The rain is pouring down right now, which is a great thing for us in San Antonio. But I have friends a few miles up the road who just finished cleaning up after a flood and may be facing another one again.

TOD: Don't remember seeing too many movies as a kid that were truly kids pix. After seeing "Mary Poppins," though, at age 3, I was told that all I wanted to do after that was fly. I wanted an umbrella for Christmas, which I thought would talk to me and would help me fly away from where I was. That was a kind of recurring theme with me, as I wanted anything that would take me away.

Good morning, all! This morning I have to go to Music Theatre International and look over the new orchestra materials for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA so i can sign off on the project and the talented copyist Ben can be released from bondage. Before I go this morning, I have to address 10 priority mail packages and send off the chorus music for the Herbert recording.

Last night I dreamed I was waiting to go somewhere with sveral musicians including a Broadway orchestrator whose work and attitude I greatly dislike. Since it was my dream, he was a total oaf with next to no knowledge of serious music. There was also an airport in this dream, if it matters.

I was sure THE CLOSER would pick up on the gang-related story of two weeks ago, and it didn't. I then watched RIZZOLI AND ISLES, which seems to be stepping into BONES territory with criminal parents and abandoned children, and then I watched the desperate housewives of New Jersey behave badly. I slept fitfully, thanks to the Oaf Above me and his current lady friend; one of them needed to step out around 2 am. Maybe they're not drug dealers or terrorists but vampires.

TOD:

Certainly I saw some of them, but I was never a big fan of big adventure movies when I was a kid.

Actually, the movie that I enjoyed and remembered the most was a Western, BROKEN ARROW w/Jimmy Stewart.

That one has always stayed with me and is still one of my favorite Westerns.

It is the first day of school, and I'm a little concerned for Zach, who is not only starting middle school, but is in a new school to boot.  Plus as I think I reported, the idiots sent the invitation to the orientation day to our old address, so he missed the chance to meet any new kids, plus his block teacher informed me (via message delivered via another teacher) she was simply "too busy" to take 30 seconds out of her day to meet me and Zach.  So I am hoping everything goes OK for him today.

Had to have some Cole Porter this morning, so I've got "Leave It to Me!" blasting out of the speakers. Love this score, even if the recording from 42nd St. Moon has only a small band instead of a full orchestra. His "Tomorrow" is like musical caffeine to me, and "Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love" always makes me smile.

Here is my "I still can't believe this" moment from a couple of days ago.  DW Wife Betsy and I were channel surfing and despite my mad attempts to scramble past ABC Family, she noticed "The Sound of Music" was on, and so our viewing "choice" was instantly set.  Betsy has seen this movie probably no fewer than 500 times (I am not exaggerating).  As we were watching, I suddenly heard Max call Baron von Trapp by his first name, and I didn't immediately catch it, nor did I remember what it was.  I asked DW Wife Betsy what von Trapp's first name was, and she replied (and I am not making this up--spelled phonetically for maximum impact):  GAYOG.  "Gayog?"  I replied incredulously.  "Do you mean Georg?"   We both dissolved into helpless laughter.  I told her Gayog sounded like a homosexual caveman.

DR Cillaliz, nice pics of the dishes.

Reading your post about losing weight reminded me about exercising in the winter.  There are like 4 months for sure when I will not be able to exercise outside. And I"m starting to freak out. Yesterday was raining and I could not bike. And I realized how much I hate indoor excercising.

Since my back is still not 100% I'm having a hard time hooping. I started doing it again a few days ago. And I can hip hoop. But I still can't hoop around my waist for more than 5 minutes at a time (it makes my back sore).

I guess I could try to do 2 X 10 minutes of hooping a day. And once a week I"m going to try to go swimming.  I used to sometimes read a book on my exercise bike (which was the only way i could tolerate it).  Maybe i could handle 5 minutes a day.

Does anybody have any good indoor exercises?

It's stormy and hot outside and I'm indoors writing a press release on holiday events. Of course, no one wants to call me back, so I have no info on the menorah lighting, the German choir's Christmas party and nothing at all related to Kwanzaa. I just want to go home, except I am at home. Listening to "A Broadway Christmas" now to get me in the mood.

Last night, DR Jose asked if I got to keep the wardrobe from the TV show.  Thank goodness I did, since it came from my own closet.  Come to think of it, the gray sweater (that made me look like the Hindenberg) was given to me by another cast mate.  The director wanted a different look for one scene and I had only brought four changes, so this girl gave me the sweater she had in the car.  It was her husband's and she was taking it to the Goodwill.

As for the Topic of the Day...

"Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger" - My family saw it at a drive-in movie theater. Twice. In one night. And it was raining, and we bought one of those plastic thingies with suction cups to keep the rain off the windshield. I think it was paired with "Orca".

The only other one that comes to mind is the original "Clash of the Titans".

Ginny, I don't know if anyone ever responded, but I'm listening to a track from the Bette Midler Rosemary Clooney album and yes, it's very, very short. LP records from the 60s and 70s were that short but nowadays CDs usually have more material.

A friend of mine (with too much time on his hands) sent me some stills from yesterday's show.  But I have no idea how to get them here if I don't download them to PhotoBucket first.

I've had trouble with photobucket lately. It makes the photos too small to see. I have been posting with Flicker.

We didn't have such a thing as a Saturday matinee for a long time because children were not allowed in the movies except for special occasions like the release of a Disney Film or The Sound of Music. This was because years prior to this there was a terrible fire where many children died.

But sometime before 1967 the rules were changed because the first movie I saw on my own was Thoroughly Modern Millie (At "Popular Prices" 99 Cents)

After children were allowed in the theaters there were Saturday matinees (and Sundays) usually MGM's family friendly movies. It was on one of these outings I saw The Wizard Of Oz for he first time in technicolor. (I only had a B & W tv set at home

Drive to the nearest mall and walk all around the inside.

I stopped walking to work...partly because I am lazy and partly because we had two stabbings one morning last week on one of the street that I walk on to get to work...less then a half mile from my house.

...some kids (16 year olds) stabbed an elderly man who was out collecting cans at 6 am, killing him, and then they drove up the street and stabbed a guy who was walking to work (who turned out to be a clerk at a store that I shop at...as I found out this weekend). He survived, but his arm right arm (which he used to protect himself) is a mess of stitches.

It seems it was random acts of violence on the part of these hooligans, and thankfully they have been caught, but very scary to have something like this happen in Salem.

I think I have work on that recording

Drive to the nearest mall and walk all around the inside.

It's funny but I don't consider mall walking exercise.  But I guess I do that once a week anways.

I have seen some people power walking in the mall before it opens.

DR Jane, to get to work from my new apartment I only have to walk through a big park and over the railroad tracks.

That should be safe enough.

I hope you are kidding, MBarnum.  That doesn't sound safe at all.

Well as long as there are no trains!

I think I have work on that recording

If you do, you aren't mentioned in the liner notes. But that doesn't mean anything these days, I'm sure.

Yes, the three appendix charts are mine, including "Farming" and "A Lady Needs A Rest." I have no memory of doing the third one.

Then I stopped into an optician quite near Trader Joe's, just to look at some frames and because in the two years since my last pair of glasses my prescription is completely different - nothing about my glasses worked.  So, I ended up getting a new exam from a very good lady doctor, then found two frames I like and am getting my first pair of progressive lenses, which they assure me I'll love.  Progressive lenses have gotten quite sophisticated in the last few years, and I'm getting the latest technology.  It's pretty expensive, these lenses, but, you know, if it makes me see well it will be worth it.

This was pre-Vinny doing the recording - obviously the singers had them, but they simply don't exist anymore - it's really shocking.  I have them for pretty much everything after the first six or seven albums.

Just got back from a special showing of "Bottle Shock." It's the third time I've seen it and it's the one movie that makes the wine geek in me smile from start to finish. Everybody from Alan Rickman to Dennis Farina seems to be having a great time. And the theater gave away a free glass of wine with the ticket. Now that's fun.

...Where I just found out that my father had surgery... Two weeks ago... Apparently, I had even called while they were on the way to the hospital... But, again, I just found out a few minutes ago. ???

However, it was a somewhat routine procedure, and my dad seems to be recuperating quickly.

Ginny, I don't know if anyone ever responded, but I'm listening to a track from the Bette Midler Rosemary Clooney album and yes, it's very, very short. LP records from the 60s and 70s were that short but nowadays CDs usually have more material.

DR Ginny - In fact, both of her "Tribute" albums - the other one being "The Peggy Lee Songbook" - are very short when it comes to running time.  I have to wonder if the overall running time was part of the "tribute"? ;)

I would say that "excessively handsome" is a very good description of Arjun Rampal.

Me: Maybe I'll tile my backsplash tonight
Mom: Nothing on TV, might as well.....

So....I am really tired and it's very late for me, but the tile is on the wall.  I have to do a little creative work - especially around the outlets, and maybe cut a few glass tiles to finish up step one, but I'm too tired to do the detail work tonight.   I'm not sure if I'll feel like grouting tomorrow or not, but that will be a piece of cake compared to the work I did tonight.

I used the $150 in gift cards I got for listening to a talk by West Publishing at the meeting in Toronto to pay for part of the tile and supplies.  The tile was still more expensive than I would like, but I have quite a bit to return, so this project will end up being fairly reasonable for a nice mosaic glass tile backsplash.

I'll post photos when I'm done.
