Title: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Post by: bk on February 17, 2011, 09:40:47 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were where the heart is, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their collective hearts are at home and they've been walking around heartless for long enough.

Good morning, all! Last night I dreamed I was in grad school writing my thesus, only it wasn't 40 years ago but now, I was writing something political, not about theatre, and several of my Barnes & Noble friends were in the dream. Oy!

Today is another Encores! day. Yesterday, joshie and I worked through the entire "Pernambuco" ballet which took us four hours, and I have a few fixes to do this morning. After that I ran to an audition to hear Kasey Marino sing. I'm looking for young performers who can do music from 1900 to 1940 with legit voices; I don't want "American Yodeling," I don't want big band crooning. I want good  "Broadway" singers who can give me a legit sound. Most operatic baritones sing with a covered sound. I want a good young legit Broadway baritone like John Raitt or John Reardon. My goal is to find several young sopranos, belters, tenors, and baritones for this project begun with the Herbert songs. Ideally, my goal is to find the new generation of Rebecca Luker, Judy Kaye, Jeanne Lehman, Kim Criswell, George Dvorsky, Brent Barrett, Hugh Panaro, David James Carroll. I love them all but they will not stay young forever except in my mind.

Today, I'm at Encores! I've got some "Pernambuco" fixes in the reeds for the last 10 or so measures. Then Joshie and I will start at the beginning of the sshow and see how far we get today. After that, I will head back here and chill out.

TOD:
DVD: the Netflix discs sit here and I want to watch the "Dark Shadow" films from DR JRand60
CD: several bootlegs, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
    VCR: same old smut

Seems that a lot of folk decided to take today off--the Quiet Car on the train ride in wasn't only quiet, it was deadly quiet.  I had to turn around occaisionally to check to see if there were other passengers--I was beginning to feel that I was on the train to...the other side.

My office is half empty, too, and will most probably be even emptier on Monday.  I rather save my days off for truly nice days in the spring or summer.

DR TCB hope you get better/feel better soon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Btw, I am completely disgusted by the behavior of your co-worker. What kind of person would apply to get a day off to make sure someone who has a medical has to go in to work??

I personally would have gone above her right away and explained that she only did this so you couldn't stay home with your medical condition.

Morning all.

I slept very late (for me) today. I got up around 9:45am. I'm feeling much better. 12 hours of sleep can do that for you. There is still some soreness but no pain and the soreness has subsided since yesterday as well. Also the gas that they pumped into my abdomen is passing as well. My stomach was somewhat distended and before I left the hospital the nurse said part of the operation involves pumping carbon dioxide gas into the abdominal cavity to allow room to work and allow the surgeon to see. They get rid of most of it at the end of the operation but some remains and the body expels it naturally. I now don't look pregnant though my navel is heavily bruised. The other two small incisions don't look so bruised. I can also sit and stand more easily so I know I'm healing.

That's enough medical talk. I don't know what we will watch this weekend. We have lots to choose from so we will play it by ear.

Good morning. I am waiting for DR Sandra to wake up to see if she wants to go for breakfast. Something besides oatmeal for a change!

Two eggs, over easy, bacon, cheesy home fries, rye toast with butter and apricot jam and a bottomless cup of coffee with half and half, that would be my choice. But my cholesterol also prevents me from eating meals like that.

The Con Ed truck has been wreaking havoc with our boiler. They've been working on the street over the past few weeks and since we have a gas boiler, when Con Ed shuts down the gas for a while our boiler goes out. It's not a problem right now because it's almost 60 degrees but when we had the cold snap it caused lots of problems.

DR Matthew - If the pain continues, you may want to get checked out to see if you have a cracked rib. It can happen.

I know there are some cars that "project" the dashboard and GPS directions on the windshield. I'm guessing supertitles couldn't be that far behind.

And speaking of young singers, a friend of mine had an extra ticket to the joint presentation of The Bartered Bride (http://www.juilliard.edu/journal/2010-2011/1102/articles/bartered-bride.php) by The Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School last night, so I joined him...

First of all, it was my first time in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre. What a gorgeous facility! Great sightlines, great acoustics, a big stage and a big orchestra pit (with hydraulics!).

As for the opera... The leads were comprised of singers from The Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and/or Juilliard's advanced Voice division, and the Juilliard Orchestra was led by none other than Maestro James Levine. -And Stephen Wadsworth was the stage director. It was quite a wonderful evening all around. Beautiful singing, spectacular playing, and even some fine dancing courtesy of Juilliard Dance. The "circus interlude" at the top of the Act 3 was particularly enjoyable.

This was the first presentation in this collaboration/experiment, and it seemed to work very well. Additionally, the production used a new translation by J.D. McClatchey, and, apparently, this is a trial run for an expanded version for the Met's 2012-13 season.

CACTUS FLOWER coming back to Broadway?  Oh dear!  That show seemed dated when it was new.  However, Maxwell Caulfield could make it more enjoyable.

Technically, it's playing at an Off-Broadway house (The Westside Theatre on 43rd and 9th). I still don't think it will do particularly well. I can't imagine why someone thought to revive it. Even with Maxwell Caulfield. I like him but I didn't like the play when I saw it or the movie, even with Goldie Hawn and Ingrid Bergman.

DR Ginny, VIBES FOR YOUR AUNT AND YOUR FAMILY!!!

Thank you, DR Jane.  Her grandson is a trooper and is warming up to us, especially as we find more and more toys for him to play with.  He's bilingual, but shy about speaking English.  He understands everything we say to him and is gradually using his English more and more.  He and his dad went out to the hospital by themselves today, so we'll see how that went...

Back when I had my appendix removed, I had to stay in the hospital for nine days!  I asked my mom if this was because it was an emergency case but she couldn't recall for sure.  All she really remembers is that the house was blissfully quiet for a week.

I've learned not to force my favorite movies on friends. I like having favorite movies and I like having friends. Too many friends have made me watch things like the "Star Wars" movies (I stopped after the third, which is now the sixth) or movies by Steven Spielberg that I wouldn't seek out in lifetime and then they take offense if my mind wanders off or I start reading or gnawing off an arm to stave off the boredom.

I am back from Encores! with "Once In Love with Amy" to work on, so I will not be going to see Kurt Weill, much as I would like to, and I will most likely miss THE BARTERED BRIDE , one of my favorite operas, as well. The Act Two duet for the soprano and buffo tenor is one of the most glorious pieces of music ever written, and the Overture and three dances are pretty wonderful as well. I do remember seeing it in cincinnati; I hated the soprano and got into a fight about it with my friend Loyce who was studying with the same voice teacher as the soprano I loathed.

I liked THE CACTUS FLOWER as a movie quite a lot. I've never seen the play, but I have seen my old acquaintance Maxwell Caulfield, who's a very nice gentleman, in the nude (along with Sam Trammel) in a production of MY NIGHT WITH REG. Seems a hundred years ago now.

I don't think I have anything else to report at the moment.

Oh, yes!

Then I ran proofer one's suggestions by Muse Margaret - we did a few and didn't do many because, as always, Muse Margaret will never allow anything to harm the voice of the book, even if it's more correct grammatically.   And I have to agree in every single instance, because the more correct version is always stilted or formal and that's not me and that's not the Hofstetter books.

There is no guarantee you will not get the flu if you get the shot.  They can only guess which viruses need to be inoculated against in a given year.  The shot will reduce the severity if you get the flu.  Soooo, had you not gotten the shot you might be in bed & not functioning.

My back went out on me in the middle of the Safeway store.  Personally, I think my back is a little old to still be going out on me, but what can I do.  I had to get cat food and cranberry juice, so I held on to the shopping cart and shuffled along as slowly as I could.  The  cat food made it into the house, the cranberry juice will stay in the car until my pain pills start to kick in later today.

CACTUS FLOWER is a favorite movie of my buddy Mark. He made me watch it shortly after we met some years back...that and BLAZING SADDLES.

CACTUS FLOWER I enjoyed, BLAZING SADDLES I never finished, and never plan to.

I am surprised, MBarnum, that you did not like BLAZING SADDLES.  Any particular reason?

It is such a strange movie one would expect DR MBarnum to like it.;)  Actually, as much as I enjoyed the movie, I'm wasn't surprised he didn't like it.

You know, I was watching an episode of SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE yesterday, and in the credits was a gal named Margaret Muse.

I tend to shut down if people try to make me watch movies. Or most television programs. I stop paying attention and my mind goes blank.

Your mind would not go blank if I made you watch ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE.

Keith used my computer today and moved the mouse back to the right side of the keyboard.  I'm giving it a try but I don't think my shoulder is ready for this yet.  In other words, OUCH!

He also tilted my keyboard up a little.  I like how my wrists feels but I think it also hurts my shoulder.

The one that worried me was the cat who caused the light to fall into the aquarium.  They are lucky that the cat (or the fish) didn't get electrocuted.

There was another cat who fell into an aquarium.  These should have been protected.  There was the cat that easily fell through the window screen.  Some people seemed to pile boxes up just for the cat to fall.  All of these are dangerous.  We had a kitten that fell off of the pile of laundry in Keith's arms and broke his leg.

I have read all of the bed and breakfast series and a few of the Alpine series.  The Alpine series just doesn't really grab me.  The B & B is lite and frothy, and occasionaly reads like Lucy and Ethel solve a murder; but I really enjoy the characters.  And if you know Seattle at all, it is fun to figure out the real names of the places she talks about.

No, seriously, BK.  I always ketchup first because getting here is easy, and then I do read the notes.  Quiz me.  i know more about your trip than you do.  :)

That is true.  Fred has mentioned that on several occasions.

Well, I must be off.  I'm ushering for Judy Shepard, Gay Rights Activist & Mother of Matthew Shepard (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/upcoming-events/2011/2/18/judy-shepard-gay-rights-activist-mother-of-matthew-shepard.html).  My ex-boyfriend and I saw her speak in Seattle about eight or nine years ago.  Talk about an emotional evening.  Tonight should be very good.

Happy?  Should FJL be happy?  I don't know - is FJL EVER happy?  Someone called out the good work and help and this begs the question "Should I be happy?"

And yes, two of your lines got laughs.  The biggest laugh, however, was MINE - so there!  The final line of this stanza got the song's biggest laugh, along with the line that followed:

Yeah, I’ve been insane
And I’ve been a glutton
And I drank champagne
From Brooke Shields’ belly-button
That was creepy, but unique
In the movies of the week

And most of the following also garnered laughs.  Most of the last verse is FJL:

I tormented Jane Seymour
Then she killed me in a wood chipper
Then you got to see me more
A lot more, when I played a male stripper
I’ve played Mr. Right
A role I embraced
A shunned Menonite
And my brain was replaced
I’ve been normal, I’ve been freak
In The Movies of the Week

I’ve been seduced by Cybil Shephard
Played the President fighting terrorists (three times!)
And the pilot who dropped the A-bomb and he feels bad
I dated my kids’ nanny
Then I married my kids’ nanny
In sequel after sequel, the best au pair I’ve ever had
I played a psycho and a psycho, had a son I never knew at all who also was a psycho , can you follow that, you can’t
But that’s okay

Too many friends have made me watch things like the "Star Wars" movies (I stopped after the third, which is now the sixth) or movies by Steven Spielberg that I wouldn't seek out in lifetime and then they take offense if my mind wanders off or I start reading or gnawing off an arm to stave off the boredom.

I tend to shut down if people try to make me watch movies. Or most television programs. I stop paying attention and my mind goes blank.

Your mind would not go blank if I made you watch ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE.
I would want to watch Attack of the Puppet People.

Thank you, DR MBarnum.  I'm off now to take the cousins out for some fun - Jungle Jim's (http://www.junglejims.com) here we come!  Bye for now!

Looks like a fun market for a seven year old. :)

It was fun for his 50-year-old dad and 60-year-old second cousin, too!  Dan's going to cook a Japanese dinner for us tomorrow and found everything he needs.

Lucky you.  What is on the menu?

I'm not sure, DR Jane, but he bought enough ingredients to feed twice as many people as we have here.  C'mon over!

I just read that Seattle author Mary Daheim will be doing a book signing tomorrow afternoon.  I don't think I will be well enough to go.

I've not read any of her books.  Her Seattle series looks like fun.  Which one do you recommend I read first?

I have read all of the bed and breakfast series and a few of the Alpine series.  The Alpine series just doesn't really grab me.  The B & B is lite and frothy, and occasionaly reads like Lucy and Ethel solve a murder; but I really enjoy the characters.  And if you know Seattle at all, it is fun to figure out the real names of the places she talks about.

Thanks.  If I come across one I'll pick it up.  I've been to Seattle briefly a couple of times, certainly not enough to play the guessing game.  I am not a fan of Lucy & Ethel-lol.

Since I don't get cable, I need to wait until a season comes out on DVD. So, I'm on Season Four. I know the one currently airing is the last, which is a shame.

McClatchey, and, apparently, this is a trial run for an expanded version for the Met's 2012-13 season.

sounds wonderful -- I must say I truly enjoy hearing about these perfomrances that you go to ---

I didn't go in to work today.  I had a very uncomfortable night.  It hurt no matter which way I tried to sleep.  I woke up at about two and my whole body was shaking.  I got up and took some Tylenol and drifited back to sleep.  There was no way I  could face getting in the shower before work.

Ginny, it is none of my business (but when has that ever stopped me), is your second cousin's mother Japanese?

Yes, DR TCB, my cousin moved to Japan 23 years ago to teach English.  He married a Japanese woman and they had a son who is now a college freshman here in the US.  My cousin and his wife were divorced when their child was very young and my cousin did a wonderful job as a single father.  About 10 years ago, he married another Japanese woman and they have this 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl.  All 3 children are delightful and my cousin is a fabulous parent.
