Well, you've read the notes, the notes neither rushed in nor feared to tread, and now it is time for you to post until the foolish and angelic cows come home.

Stay Safe!

Good morning, all! I slept poorly, and I am out of bed, bathed, and dressed. Around 8:45 I will catch a bus to Radio City to see my barber. I'll walk from there to City Center, where Joshie and I will finish up the orchestra fixes for tomorrow's sitzprobe. When the books are ready, I'll head for home and a nap.

In yesterday's mail I got the first edit of the Victor Herbert piano pieces, and I'm listening to them this morning. On Sunday, I will drag out my scores and follow the recording with them. Tonight, I have no plans and I like that.

TOD:
   DVD: two new Netflix items and something with Kathy Bates
   CD: Herbert piano pieces, Jacques Brel, Guy Haines, Offenbach
   VCR: Oy!

then I have  to go to buy a new LightScribe drive.....mine is about three years old and has stopped reading/writing DVD's.  It works fine with CD's, but not DVD's.....I think I burned out the DVD laser.

I'm trying to think of which musicals to show my niece (or let her listen to). She is 5 and crazy about ANNIE (she sings and listens to it every night).

I just gave her the cd of the LION KING because it is coming here this fall and my sis it taking her for her birthday.

She heard a bit of the LES MIS concert and seemed interested in that.

She is a creature of habit. So she might not be willing to try too many new shows.

I do have the dvd of JOSEPH which I want to let her watch.  I'm wondering if she would enjoy act 1 of INTO THE WOODS (I love that show but it still may be too old for her).

Friday morning greetings!  I've been over on Facebook, where my cousin in Japan has posted that he and his family are OK.  They live near Nagoya, which is pretty far from the quake and they're not in the path of the tsunami.  Sure puts my annoyance with last night's snowfall into perspective.

I haven't, but I guess now is as good a time as ever...

I was asked to come aboard Arena Stage's remount of Oklahoma! as the Assistant Conductor/Keyboard Player.  I start rehearsals back down in DC in June, the show opens in July, and it will run through October. And I will finally be making my long-delayed conducting debut in DC.

And that's my news. ;)

And in other news...

I had mentioned it in passing a few weeks, but my landlord did indeed to sell the building. So... Long story short, I've been spending the past week packing up and cleaning my apartment. Most of my stuff will be going into storage, but I will be moving into a friend's place - he just booked a tour and needed a subletter , so...

And since two of my current apartment-mates were already moving out, and since it was proving very difficult to find new roommates, well...

It really seems that everything is falling into place, happening for a reason.

DR Jane, chlorine must be bad for nails because mine too never look good after I've swam. :(

Our pool is mostly saline which I doubt is good either.  There is more chlorine in the whirlpool and the rushing water must make it worst.  Went I went to remove the polish there was hardly any on my right hand and I had to work hard to get the polish off the left one.  At least I'm half right about putting polish on before swimming.

Years ago, after a quake in Alaska, the Oregon coast was hit by a tsunami.  There are still warning signs in towns along the coast.  The sign in Bandon basically says to run really fast.

Weren't almost all the FOLLIES center weekend seats in first 15 rows moved up to $150 or something like that (or maybe it came to $150 per seat with the service charge)?  I'd heard from the box office phone person they'd put in some kind of pricing based on demand or something like that?

We are all set for tomorrow's sitzprobe. The last thing Joshie and I did was go through the Violin C book and check for bowings, different markings, etx. from the concertmaster's part. We had another cut to enter in the "Ashmolean Marching Society" number and a new cut in "Once In love With Amy," and then we looked at all the cuts to insure they were correct. I was invited to the afternoon runthrough but I decided to come home and rest up.

I will arrive tomorrow at Carol Studios at noon for the band rehearsal (sitzprobe at 3pm). I think  I will spend the morning doing the week's laundry. Tonight, I may finish reading the d'Amboise bioraphy. I've got a Sherlock Holmes-Jack the Ripper novel, "Dust and Shadow," to begin.

Did you announce your new yet, Jose?

I haven't, but I guess now is as good a time as ever...

I was asked to come aboard Arena Stage's remount of Oklahoma! as the Assistant Conductor/Keyboard Player.  I start rehearsals back down in DC in June, the show opens in July, and it will run through October. And I will finally be making my long-delayed conducting debut in DC.

And that's my news. ;)

Congrats!

I'm taking a break from the d'Amboise bio. His chapters on Balanchine's final hospitalization and death, all the while the various cabals at City Ballet and the crazy Lincoln Kirstein were going on, are quite heartbreaking and moving. His warts-and-all portraits of Balanchine and Kirstein, who brought Balanchine to America to develop a company, are really magnificent. Kirstein, for a rich Jew, had a lot of negative anti-Semitic things to say about Robbins, but - for me -  Robbins and Balanchine set the standards for dan ce in this country and their talents render me speechless.

I think I'll ponder diinner and then go back to the book.

I've also been dealing with some Bank of America stuff - they have, of late, become a little relentless about calling and offering new services - the problem is, they call and don't tell you what the call's about, so you get the impression there's something wrong when there isn't.  It happened two weeks ago and it happened this morning and I am going to have it stopped if I have to go all the way to the top of the BofA food chain.  I called back this gal who called and all you get, relentlessly, is her machine, which tells you to leave a number, the name of your business (a good indication that this isn't really about a problem) and she says she'll get right back to you.  Not.  I am now on a CRUSADE!!!

After I posted I noticed your oven looks new.  Shocking isn't a good idea.  We purchased a house that supposedly the dishwasher worked.  I was upset they didn't have the decency to tell me how dangerous the dishwasher was.  Fortunately I was the first one to attempt to use it and not the boys.

It really seems that everything is falling into place, happening for a reason.

sorry about the need to move but perhaps with all the Con Ed issues and roommate issues it is  all for the best (a Godspell refrence)

take a look in your banking materials - by Federal law they have to have provided you with a "privacy statement" -  in that statement there is a 1-800 number that you can call to "opt out" of ALL sales calls

If you do not "opt out" they are allowed to call you because of their existing relationship with you

I do believe the crusade has been successful, at least for me, and I recommend anyone else who is with BofA call and do exactly what I did.  I got to the "escalations" department, got a great gal, and she immediately found the person who'd called me and left the message and then never called back.  That person will be spoken to, and I now have instructions on my account that I am never to be called, save for the fraud department should there ever actually be a problem.  This gal was great and she made me laugh when she said she was going to "reach out" to Lena, the gal who made the call this morning.  She's also going to recommend to the highest level that any time a message is left it HAS to say there is no problem with your account, this is a solicitation phone call.  If she gets that through then all this will be much better.

Checking the news DR Sam seems to have high waves.  I expect she is at work and I don't know how close to the ocean she is.

DR's JMK & MBarnum should be fine, as should Bruce.  It would have to be an extremely big tsunami to reach DR Jeanne and that isn't expected.

My guess, DR Ron is far enough inland.

As for DRs George, TCB, Ann & Jed my personal belief is they will be fine.  TCB is close to the water but I can't find anything that says his area had to evacuate.  I'll search a bit more for news.

DR Jane, I got my countertop at Home Depot.  Their tear out charge is calculated by the foot, I can't remember the rate.  my tear out was just loosening some screws, and sawing one little piece off and lifting the counter out.  That was literally it and we did it in about 15 minutes.   I think they wanted something like $500-700 to do that.

Re BofA. I opened a BofA account when I moved back to California. They made so many blunders, including putting my deposit into the WRONG account, that I finally closed the account. I have an account with US Bank now and they have been MUCH better. I don't think it should even be legal for the sorts of calls that Bruce has been receiving. I've gotten them, too, and it's very easy to panic! As for that, "This is a courtesy call" nonsense, I usually reply, "No, this is a SALES call and there's nothing courteous about it." I REALLY detest telemarketing. Can you tell??

A close friend of mine had a small stroke about a month ago. He knew what was happening at the time. He phoned his health plan (Kaiser), filled them in, and asked for an appointment. They gave him one two weeks off. A mutual friend said, "Uh, I think you need to see a doctor sooner." My friend agreed, called Kaiser back, leaned on them, and got an appointment for the next day. The doc said my friend needed to have his arteries cleaned out and scheduled the surgery for this coming Monday. Since then there has been blunder after blunder, including THREE prescription errors, each of which could have been fatal. In addition, the drug they gave him to lower his blood pressure has made him ill. He asked them to change it, but they refused, saying that they don't like to change medication prior to surgery. Each time I talk to him the story has gotten worse. Today I suggested that he cancel Monday's surgery--or at least postpone it. They've shown themselves to be so incompetent and uncaring that I am worried that he won't make it through.

Scary.  VIBES TO YOUR FRIEND!!!

Thanks, Laura and Jane. Yes, it is scary. Especially so since this seems to be standard procedure--one error would be bad enough, but it's been one right after another.

Just got word that Ordeal by Innocence is arriving Monday morning - what a day THAT'S going to be - announcing at six am, shipping out Ordeal, and then rehearsing, not to mention hopefully printing out a LOT of orders.  Remember, I'm announcing the new title here at midnight this very evening.

I watched INSIDE JOB the other night. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of this film. Not only did I not find it Oscar material, the filmmakers were so intent on blaming someone that they missed one of the most important points, namely that the economics community in general did not feel that our economy was at risk, that is it robust and self-regulating. The few who alerted others to the potential dangers were not taken very seriously. I watched a PBS Frontline documentary, THE MADOFF AFFAIR, the same evening, and IMO it's a much better production. Smaller scope, easier to get your arms around, granted, but a better product.

It is similar to Corian, Jeanne. Just a different company.

Mine is Staron, similar to Corian but a different company.  I really love it.  Much less upkeep than any sort of stone because it's nonporous.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for the friend of DR Jeanne! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just finished the d'Amboise biography.  I ended up weeping through the last quarter of it as he wrote about the deaths of colleagues; the section on the death of Melissa Hayden, a fierce dancer who danced at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival the summer I worked there, was quite moving, I wish I'd known the lady he knew.  That summer, she was quite formidable and unpleasant, and his writing of their long partnership and friendship was a much better way to remember her as an artist.  It was a very beautiful book.
Re BofA. I opened a BofA account when I moved back to California. They made so many blunders, including putting my deposit into the WRONG account, that I finally closed the account. I have an account with US Bank now and they have been MUCH better. I don't think it should even be legal for the sorts of calls that Bruce has been receiving. I've gotten them, too, and it's very easy to panic! As for that, "This is a courtesy call" nonsense, I usually reply, "No, this is a SALES call and there's nothing courteous about it." I REALLY detest telemarketing. Can you tell??
I haven't been with a bank since just after I graduated from college.  I've been with the same credit union for about 20 years and have never had any trouble...and no fees (except for overdraft "issues" ;)).
I'm just sayin'. :)
Jane, both films ask, "This is an outrage! HOW did it happen?" Although Madoff had a ponzi scheme that was a very deliberate fraud, it went on for a very long time, and the Powers That Be, who SHOULD have caught it, didn't. Both films deal with "holes" in our financial systems. There's definitely some overlap.
BTW, THE MADOFF AFFAIR is available on streaming video and is only about an hour long. Worth seeing, IMHO.
I'm a little ticked at the movie theater.  Last week I called the newspaper about the Oscar Contest because I haven't received the passes yet.  Angie said she had contacted the theater and they had to get them from their corporate and needed the name of the winner.  OK.  Today I called her again.  She said that she was thinking about it today too and had emailed the theater but hadn't heard back.  I was up for a movie this weekend, but don't really want to pay if I'm supposed to have a free pass.
I haven't, but I guess now is as good a time as ever...
I was asked to come aboard Arena Stage's remount of Oklahoma! as the Assistant Conductor/Keyboard Player.  I start rehearsals back down in DC in June, the show opens in July, and it will run through October. And I will finally be making my long-delayed conducting debut in DC.
And that's my news. ;)
Grand news it is.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Are you only subletting the new apartment until June?
Thank You, DR Jane.
My friend is on tour through the end of June, so... Once I get past the next couple of days, then I'll start thinking about whether or not I want to try to find another place after that.
And in other news...
I had mentioned it in passing a few weeks, but my landlord did indeed to sell the building. So... Long story short, I've been spending the past week packing up and cleaning my apartment. Most of my stuff will be going into storage, but I will be moving into a friend's place - he just booked a tour and needed a subletter , so...
And since two of my current apartment-mates were already moving out, and since it was proving very difficult to find new roommates, well...
It really seems that everything is falling into place, happening for a reason.
I was a bit overwhelmed at first, but once I realized that the only furniture I have is my bed frame and my dresser, that made me breathe a huge sigh of relief. This past Monday, I was playing auditions for the Tokyo Disneyland Resort and Disney Sea...
I really hope that all of the current Cast Members and their families have been able to communicate with each other. -At least I know that my friends who work in the casting and production office in Tokyo are currently in Orlando continuing their audition tour.
My goddaughter Charlotte was one of the auditioners.
Oh! I thought that might have been her!
*As for Tokyo Disneyland... Apparently, they had 70,000 people in the Parks when the earthquake hit yesterday, and parts of Disney Sea were flooded. Thankfully, there have been no reports of any injuries in the Parks, but since the roads and mass transit systems were shut down, many people ended up spending the night in the Parks.
I also realized that the new cast just started over there two weeks ago. I can't imagine starting a new job in a new place - a new country! - and having something like that happen.
Weren't almost all the FOLLIES center weekend seats in first 15 rows moved up to $150 or something like that (or maybe it came to $150 per seat with the service charge)?  I'd heard from the box office phone person they'd put in some kind of pricing based on demand or something like that?
The pricing for tickets at the Kennedy Center has been running higher than Broadway for a few seasons now. -Just like when I was in Los Angeles for What If? and the prices at The Pantages for Hairspray topped out at $140 - and that was for the regular-priced center orchestra seats.
I'm wondering if the Kennedy Center went ahead and re-alloted the number of seats at each price point. ???
According to the Kennedy Center web site (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/?fuseaction=showEvent&event=TLTSD), the tickets for Follies run from $45-150, depending on the day of the week and section you'd like to sit.
*I actually just looked at a couple of dates, and it looks like most of the weekends are almost completely sold out. Weekday availability, however, is a different story.
Did you announce your new yet, Jose?
I haven't, but I guess now is as good a time as ever...
I was asked to come aboard Arena Stage's remount of Oklahoma! as the Assistant Conductor/Keyboard Player.  I start rehearsals back down in DC in June, the show opens in July, and it will run through October. And I will finally be making my long-delayed conducting debut in DC.
And that's my news. ;)
Fantastic!! Maybe we can trek down to see ya!
Thank You, DR vixmom.
-Have the vixter and the vixdad ever been to DC? It really is a great place to visit in the summer.
We have not been there since 96 - when the Vixter was just 3....
We really need to get down there again for a long weekend
Are Jeanne, BK, RLP, Mike Barnum, JMK, TCB, Jed & Ann, in any danger of Tsunami related disasters?
VIBES for one and all
Checking the news DR Sam seems to have high waves.  I expect she is at work and I don't know how close to the ocean she is.
DR's JMK & MBarnum should be fine, as should Bruce.  It would have to be an extremely big tsunami to reach DR Jeanne and that isn't expected.
My guess, DR Ron is far enough inland.
As for DRs George, TCB, Ann & Jed my personal belief is they will be fine.  TCB is close to the water but I can't find anything that says his area had to evacuate.  I'll search a bit more for news.
Thanks, DR Jane, for keeping tabs on everyone. -And it does look like every DR was out of harm's way today.
Hello, everyone.
Reporting in. No tsunamis in my 'hood. But, as I live in a predominately Japanese neighborhood, I suspect many nearby families are worried and grieving.
Vibes to all.
When I was walking by the Time-Warner Center, one of the businesses had turned the large TV monitor in their window to the coverage of the earthquake and tsunami - normally it runs advertisements. There were lots of people of the sidewalk watching, and most of them were Japanese tourists. :-\
A close friend of mine had a small stroke about a month ago. He knew what was happening at the time. He phoned his health plan (Kaiser), filled them in, and asked for an appointment. They gave him one two weeks off. A mutual friend said, "Uh, I think you need to see a doctor sooner." My friend agreed, called Kaiser back, leaned on them, and got an appointment for the next day. The doc said my friend needed to have his arteries cleaned out and scheduled the surgery for this coming Monday. Since then there has been blunder after blunder, including THREE prescription errors, each of which could have been fatal. In addition, the drug they gave him to lower his blood pressure has made him ill. He asked them to change it, but they refused, saying that they don't like to change medication prior to surgery. Each time I talk to him the story has gotten worse. Today I suggested that he cancel Monday's surgery--or at least postpone it. They've shown themselves to be so incompetent and uncaring that I am worried that he won't make it through.
I'm a little ticked at the movie theater.  Last week I called the newspaper about the Oscar Contest because I haven't received the passes yet.  Angie said she had contacted the theater and they had to get them from their corporate and needed the name of the winner.  OK.  Today I called her again.  She said that she was thinking about it today too and had emailed the theater but hadn't heard back.  I was up for a movie this weekend, but don't really want to pay if I'm supposed to have a free pass.
Just walk up to the box office:
"Hello, I'm supposed to pick up the movie passes I won."
-What movies passes.
"The ones I won."
-Are you planning on seeing a movie tonight?
"Yes, but only if I can use my free passes."
-But we don't have them here.
"Well, they were supposed to sent here from the corporate office."
....
And as the line behind you gets longer and longer, they should just eventually let you in for free. ;)
In other news...
I had a great time at the workshop presentation of The Great Pretender. -I'd link to the website, but it seems to be down right now. In any case...
The title actually refers to Freddie Mercury (of Queen), and TGP is basically a bio-musical. It is a jukebox musical, but since Freddie Mercury wrote songs based on what was currently going on in his life at the time, they didn't seem shoehorned into the book.
They assembled a great cast and a great band.  -And the cast was led by Hugh Panaro playing "older Freddie" - there was also a "child Freddie" and just a "Freddie". It was great seeing and hearing Hugh again, and the songs really fit his voice very well. And the "Freddie", Joel Prez, sounded scarily like Freddie Mercury at times.
I believe she was "in costume" for that appearance. She had prosthetics on her cheekbones as well as next to her eyes.
Hi everyone.  We are fine here in the Bay Area.
Congrats to DR Jose!
Failed to procure an iPad 2 today.  Looked like Apple wasn't quite ready for the onslaught of people who wanted the iPad 2.  I ordered mine on line.  2-3 weeks for delivery.  I stood in line for over 2 hours, not even as long as others but I had to work until 3:00!!
- they have, of late, become a little relentless about calling and offering new services - the problem is, they call and don't tell you what the call's about, so you get the impression there's something wrong when there isn't.  It happened two weeks ago and it happened this morning and I am going to have it stopped if I have to go all the way to the top of the BofA food chain.
Good Luck - if BofA vends their phone solicitation business to a vendor, there is little likelihood you can get the calls to stop. The vendor probably goes to a data-pimp like me who generates the phone lists independent of the bank. Many was the time I had to frustrate a potentail voter when I infomed them there was no mechanism for removing them from a candidate's call list.
TOD:
DVR'd a ton of old movies on TCM over the last couple of days. Just fineshed watching the 1931 Barbara Stanwyck/ Ricardo Cortez movie A DIME A DANCE. Loved it and loved Barbara....and sort of swooned over Ricardo.  8)
Priot to that I watched two swell college musicals...Jimmy Durante and Charles (what a hunk) Starrett in START CHEERING (1938) and then Ozzie Nelson, Harriet Hilliard, and Ruby Keeler in SWEETHEART OF THE CAMPUS (1941)....some great music in both films.
