Well, you've read the notes, the notes were easy on the eyeballs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out why there is such a word as eyeball.

Actually, the biggest during-the-show standing ovation at FOLLIES yesterday was at the end of "Who's That Woman" - and as it happens, the next line of the Stella Deems character after that number is "What a blast."

The audience chose to be at the final D.C. performance and (mis)behaved accordingly

Monday morning greetings!  This is the first morning since last Wednesday that we haven't had someone in our guest room - and it was a different combination of people each night, Wednesday-Saturday.  Seems pretty quiet...

TOD - I am currently reading Jerry Orbach: Prince of the City by John Anthony Gilvey.  As with his book about Gower Champion, I find Gilvey's writing style kind of awkward.  But the subject matter more than makes up for that.

Fiction-wise, on my Kindle I'm reading Susan Vreeland's Clara and Mr. Tiffany.  She's one of my favorite novelists and I especially want to get well into this book before Richard and I go to Cincinnati's Taft Museum to see the current exhibit of Tiffany angel windows.

TOD:

I am currently reading this year's 1 Book 1 Tweet (or is it 1 Tweet 1 Book) selection, THE BLIND ASSASSIN by Margaret Atwood.  While it's not the kind of book I would normally choose to read, I am enjoying it and the lively discussion of it on Twitter.

Good morning, all! Around 2 am, I awoke with horrid stomach pains and was a restless sleeper and floorpacer for a couple of hours. Around 5:30 all seemed to be good and I slept until 8:15 or so. I wanted to sleep longer, but I have to be at my local social security office at 11 this morning to register as an Old Coot and to see some of the money I've been paying into Social Security for the past 46 years.

On the EILEEN front, a score to be proofed has come in, so I can go back to work on that project. On my way to SS I will stop at Staples and enlarge the printout to 11x17 paper.

That's pretty much my day. As to the TOD, I've got the following on my reading table:
The new Annotated Pride & Prejudice
    Christopher Plummer's autobiography
The new biography of my friend Vito Russo
The Terror: The Shadow of the Guillotine, France 1792-1794

As for the Topic of the Day...

I still making my way through two food-related memoirs:

-"Born Round" by the former Dining Critic for the New York Times, Frank Bruni.
-"Blood, Bones & Butter" by Chef Gabrielle Hamilton - who recently won a Best Chef award from the James Beard Foundation.

It's been quite interesting comparing and contrasting both writer's relationship with and to food - and sometimes "against" it.

TOD:

Non-fiction-wise, I recently finished POSITIVELY 4th STREET by David Hajdu.  It's about the folk music scene of the early 60s, though it mostly revolves around the careers of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan along with two others I only barely knew of, Richard Farina and Baez's sister, Mimi Baez Farina.  The book was interesting to me in that I learned that rock 'n' roll had actually lost its momentum and popularity with the college age crowd in the late 50s/early 60s and that folk music was being embraced instead.  Also interesting to learn about Baez and Dylan's early connection and their climbs to fame.  And while I had heard of Richard Farina, I never knew what his role was in these early days of the counter culture of the 60s.

However, I think that Hajdu is a terrible writer.  As with his other book I read on the comic book industry, he seems to dislike everyone he writes about and paints completely unflattering portraits of them.  Baez achieved her fame by stealing the songs and styles of other artists and ultimately becomes a naive radical-chic dupe who attempts to maintain a clingy, needy dependant relationship with Dylan.  Dylan is a weasel who lies constantly about himself and others.  And the worst of the lot is Farina, who is an opportunistic, fame-thirsty glory-hound who uses and discards people on his quest for stardom as either a writer or musician.  Even if these portrayals are half true, Hajdu makes wild assumptions about the motivations of the people he writes about that are based on simple events or actions.  He's the kind of muckraker that would be right at home working at Fox News.  Feh!

I liked it very much. I did find several of the dark scenes to be very very dark, but I really enjoyed the series, especialy how little people aged over 40years worth of time. Who know the 12th Century was so good for complexions?

I realize I'm a day late in posting. I apologize for my tardiness. The reading was great fun, and the cake was fabulous. I'm afraid it was my fault the cake gotten eaten up so quickly. I ended up slicing most of it - there was no knife, so I used the handle of a fork, and it's difficult to cut small slices with the end of a fork. Anyway, thank you, Bruce, for inviting us to lunch. We also enjoyed the company very much.

Yes. Just click on your Name in the top right-hand corner, then Settings -> Profile -> Picture. -Just follow the prompts.

For your own haineshisway account, I'd suggest the one you use here on HHW and elsewhere.

For Kritzerland, I'd suggest uploading an image of your current/latest release.

A friend of mine is taking a college course this summer, and that will be his text book.

It's got good moments, but like every musical theatre "historian" dealing with the period between 1890 and SHOW BOAT, which is where American musical theatre seems to become logical to many (it's Hammerstein, dontcha know and he taught Sondheim!), the author knows and appreciates too little. There are two reasons for this, I believe:
   1. scripts and scores are hard to come by unless you know where to search
   2. too few recordings of these things as "shows," not simply popular songs from them, exist

Also, the blurring in that period between musical comedy, vaudeville, operetta, extravaganza, and comic opera is vast, and this vague je ne sais quoi atmosphere is murky to clear through things. Because there was no tv and little film, live theatre flourished and it was a bustling, thriving atmosphere for commercial theatrical ventures with every Broadway show going out on tour when it closed and lots of touring theatrical companies that played regions of the USA and never came into New York. Since the documentation for all of this is not easy to collect, and since a lot of these shows, by contemporary musical theatre standards, are silly bits of fluff, it's easier to dismiss them than to become interested in them.

I listened to the BOOK OF MORMON CD last night and it was most enjoyable.  I liked most of the songs - and I can imagine that watching them performed with a lot of energy and in the context of the show must be a LOT OF FUN.

I always like the SOUTH PARK THE MOVIE songs - and these are a lot like that.  The profanity was Rampant!  But there you are.... I gave a standing ovation to I BELIEVE and HASA DIGA EEBOWAI in the first act, and SPOOKY MORMON HELL DREAM in the second act.

Monday morning greetings!  This is the first morning since last Wednesday that we haven't had someone in our guest room - and it was a different combination of people each night, Wednesday-Saturday.  Seems pretty quiet...

In a good way?  It seems a rest is in order.

I looked up the book & had no idea a woman designed the famous Tiffany lamps.  She seems like an extremely interesting person.  Please let me know if you still recommend the book once you are done reading it.

Even though we were gathered in Ohio for a solemn occasion, we did manage to laugh and enjoy each other's company.  Left to right:  my cousin Perry, his wife Jessica, my sister Nancy, her husband Jerry, their daughter Laura, Richard, my cousin Dan, his wife Yukko, my Mother, Mary Linda, her sister Julianne.

Where is Rob in the photo?

Yes, the worst of it is over, DR Laura.  The cousins and their wives will be here for dinner this evening, but they're bringing the food.  Tomorrow, Jess is flying to Florida to be in a wedding and the guys and Yukko are going to Pittsburgh to see their dad.  They're leaving Perry's truck with what's left of Aunt Jo's furniture in our garage and will be back for it before caravanning back to GA later in the week.

And now...

I need to take a couple of minutes to go through the clothes I pulled from storage yesterday, and then I need to get ready to head out for the rest of my day - which seems to be more jam-packed with each new email and phone call this morning.

It turns out I might not need to play the auditions this afternoon since the New York casting director went ahead and hired his own. So, I may just be "behind the table" as staff. :)

No need for pants, then.

Actually, when I'm at the piano, I don't have to wear pants. Alas, most audition rooms are equipped with folding tables, and said tables don't have "modesty panels".

And your point is...??

Terrific stuff  And I've read Bob Crais latest mystery, THE SENTRY.  Crais is allways a good read.

I also tried googling it.  Thanks for the explanation.

Life is not a highway strewn with flowers,
Still it holds a goodly share of bliss,
When the sun gives way to April showers,
Here is the point you should never miss.

Though April showers may come your way,
They bring the flowers that bloom in May.
So if it's raining, have no regrets,
Because it isn't raining rain, you know, (It's raining violets,)
And where you see clouds upon the hills,
You soon will see crowds of daffodils,
So keep on looking for a blue bird, And list'ning for his song,
Whenever April showers come along.

And where you see clouds upon the hills,

Good Afternoon!

I had hoped to make it down to 23rd Street well enough in advance of today's auditions so that I could walk the new section of The High Line. Alas, since I didn't leave the apartment until a little before Noon, I really didn't have the time to do so. But I was able to make a pass through the Union Square Greenmarket, and I stopped by City Bakery to pick up some cookies as well as to check in with the owner, Maury. And then it was off to the auditions.

And once I got to Chelsea Studios, I checked to see which studio we were in, went to the studio... And noticed that nobody was there yet.

I was there at 12:50. It turned out that the auditions didn't start until 1:30 - not 1:00. -And, yes, my email said 1:30, so...

So I went to Whole Foods to shop for some toiletries.

And then once I got back to Chelsea Studios at 1:20, I met the staff, and then sat in the auditions for about two hours. I didn't have to play, so I just sat back and observed. I think we found who we needed. At least I hope we did.

I shall now be on my way to the lab to listen to the D-88 of reel one's sound - I've only heard it "raw" and it was horrifying.  They've already done one pass with some sort of filtering, so I'll be hearing that.  Then we'll discuss.  I'm also bringing two different reel ones from two prints I had here at the house - one print, made for me specifically when the film came out - has only been run two or three times, tops, maybe not even that many.  The other print was, last it was run at the Egyptian American Cinematheque, in excellent condition and I think it sounded pretty decent there.

If the actual 35mm sound is better, we'll then transfer those reels.  If not, then we'll be having the long discussion about restoring what we have as best as possible.  If I like what I hear on the 35mm or even the filtered version off the optical negative, I shall give a mid-listening standing ovation.

None of those sound like porn!

DD Ben's First Day of Camp -- first of all, DD Ben is getting really good at being on the leash.  We walked a lot today, even ran a little.  I couldn't be more pleased with him today.  At camp, he was introduced as Toto, and everyone loved him.  He sat by the piano, took a break and did a little "business" which is he was praised for, and then he got to go to the dog park afterward.  He's had his dinner and is ready to hang out in his crate while I go to Curtains rehearsal.  He'll go out again upon my return.  He's been great today, we've made some strides.  (no pun intended)

Tomorrow, DD Ben goes to camp and then to the vet.

TCB...have you heard/read about this?:  Qwest Field renamed CenturyLink Field (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seahawks/2015375372_hawk21.html)

Quote
What was originally known as Seahawks Stadium when it opened in 2002, then renamed Qwest Field in 2004, has a new name — CenturyLink Field.

That's as many names as the Seahawks have had head coaches since the stadium — built on the site of the former Kingdome — opened its doors.

The announcement of the name change came Monday. A news conference to unveil the new logo will be held Thursday.

Qwest was purchased by CenturyLink in April.

Qwest purchased naming rights to the stadium in 2004 in a sponsorship deal that runs through 2014 with a five-year renewal option, reportedly paying an estimated $75 million. The fact the deal might run out in three years, though, means there's no guarantee the new name will last for long. It's a far cry from places like Fenway Park, which was named in 1912 after the Boston neighborhood in which the stadium resides and hasn't changed.

and also:

Quote
The events center will be known as CenturyLink Field Event Center.

Shocked that none of our experts could figure out the Snoopy song line "I know now you can't rain a violet."  I couldn't either, but the thirteen-year-old's mother did (I even googled "rain" and "violet" and got zilch) - the song April Showers - "It's raining violets."  Mystery solved.

And I always thought it was "raining violence."

Portland Pride was a lot of fun, particularly hanging out with my buddy Mark (who flew in from Wyoming) and my buddy Greg.

Greg, however, flaked out on us early. He spotted his ex and got all upset and depressed. His ex is a jerk and they have been split up for four years, but Greg still decided to leave us and go home.

Mark and I were a bit annoyed (since both of us traveled in order to go to Gay Pride with Greg), but we carried on, visiting gay bars, block parties, and strip clubs (male strippers, of course) in downtown Portland.

I did not meet MR. Right (not that I was even looking for him), but when I was stuffing a dollar bill down the pants of a very hunky stripper, the guy leaned down, gave me a hug and whispered in my ear asking if I was a top.

So I guess I might have met Mr. Right Now.

Back from the lab.  My mint print's soundtrack is a tiny bit better than the optical negative, so that's what we're going to use.  It's still got distortion but we're hoping there will be workarounds, one of which the sound guy will try later this evening.  If that helps, then I'll go back tomorrow and we'll test out various and sundried filters to see if we can find one setting to do the sound transfer - that's the most cost effective.  If we don't then it has to go through something called Sonic, which is a lot more time-consuming, but will probably give the desired result.

Certainly a possibility.  As some may remember, the lab that was storing the print when I licensed the film to Germany (they insisted on storing it here in LA and then never paid their bill - and no one ever called ME about it) sold the print and I would have to use the German DVD, which is letterboxed but not anamorphic - it looks great but couldn't be used for a blu-ray transfer and at this point I'm not willing to do a DVD as that market is kaput.  So, I'm on the prowl for the negative or a 35mm print.

I have discovered the coolest thing that I never knew existed, and BK you may want to run right out and get one, too, as it will instantly solve the wireless update problems I helped you overcome with your BD player at your home environment.  There is a company called NetGear that sells these handy dandy little things called HomePlugs.  You plug them into a wall outlet, put an ethernet cable into your router, and then there's another HomePlug you can take to any other room with a wall plug and you can "hard wire" any devices into your LAN with another ethernet cable.  We've been using it all over the house to do firmware updates where our wireless network won't reach and it's been doing great.  Highly recommended.

Still no luck on the job front... Have had a couple of interviews but no offers.

Other than that there has been the ongoing news about floods. ND is getting pounded on the flood front this year: Devils Lake, Red River, Sheyenne,  Missouri, James, and the Souris.

In the case of the Souris, Canada can no longer hold the water back in two reservoirs and has released a LOT of water. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Burlington, ND rural areas near the river and half of Minot, ND

It is not a good situation.

Just had a bit of potentially good news - the audio guy called and he did his test on the other machine, called a one-light machine, which sometimes optimizes sound on older prints - and apparently that really helped and he thinks I'm going to be much happier - so I'll go over there tomorrow evening around seven-thirty to hear, and then we'll use some EQ and filter, get it to sound as good as it can, and he thinks it will basically end up being a real-time transfer, which is fantastic.

All's Well That Ends Well at The Delacorte was beautiful. Yes, it's one of Shakespeare's "Problem Plays" - it's categorized as a Comedy, but it really isn't one. However, nor is it a out and out Tragedy either. Thus... It's a "Problem". I really hope I can manage to see the other play running in rep this summer, Measure for Measure, on one of my Mondays when I'm back up from DC. We shall see...

*And, it was an absolutely gorgeous night too! On the cool side, with some nice gentle breezes throughout.

Well, since the audio guy works the night shift, I just went over there to hear the result of his little test and the news is fantastic - it sounds great, no distortion at all and we're set to go - he'll do the transfer tomorrow and it will be ready for us when we start transferring the picture on Thursday.

That's great news, BK! ;D
