Good morning, all! Thanks for the continued vibes and good wishes. I thiunk HHW alone got us through this recording.

First, let's get to the important news:
DR Cillaliz, I love the new avatar! Is it new or one you've previously used? I really like it.
DR Ginny, I would have preferred a pint of Haagen Daz as well, but after seeing myself in the many many mirrors on the walls of my room's bathroom, it's time for a salad-only diet for at least six months.
DR MichaelS, Linda Lavin had other commitments and could not do the transfer to Broadway; I personally think Houdyshell's a better choice. Now, if they could get Elaine Page to learn her lyrics and not backphrase so much!
DR TCB, I have only great hopes and good wishes for your neurosurgeon visit today!
DR Jose, what are you doing to provoke all those OK injuries? Give those boys a rest!

Last night's sessions went really well, but up to the wire. We got ourt two leads Eamonn and Mary finished up by the first break; they had two duets and Eamonn's cut song 'Cupid the Cunnin Paudeen,' which is a second-rate Herbert song sung as charmingly as any wonderful Irish tenor could sing it. After break, we did Rachel's flirtatious 'My Little Irish Rose,' and went on to the Overture. We read it down for wrong notes and finished it by the hour break between trhe two sessions.

The last session got in the Big Dance from Act Three, along with the two Entr'Actes, and then we reached the problematic moments: a redo of the choir boys' Ave Maria, which was pitchy. I knew what the problem was: too few strings to focus the pitch and a long section with the violins divided into four parts, two on a part. I had a discussion with Fionnuala, our wonderful concert mistress, and we took the top and bottom parts of Violin 1 from two players on each line to three on the top part and only one on the bottom. That focused the pitch and what everyone feared would take forever to get right was accomplished in 15 minutes or so.

The other problem was the 8-minute Orchestra Selection from EILEEN, which both Judy and David our conductor thought would take years to record, and I was prepared to see it go if we ended up in overtime; I wanted it, but it was the one piece on the recording not written for the show but written to capitalize on the show. We did a couple of complete takes, and then Judy broke it down into three sections. We recorded each section twice, picking up fixes in each, and finished it just before the session ended. Major relief!

Today, I will pack,  make a visit to the pharmacy around the corner for aspirin with codiene - I'm stocking up for my next crippling round of sciatica or whatever it was that laid me low in 2009 - and at 2 I'm having coffee with David Brophy, our conductor, since he cannot make tonight's festivities and Joe and Jonathan about future projects. Then, tonight, Fionnuala, her husband, our Dublin producers, God knows who else, and myself are celebrating.

I've decided as well that I'm going to give my bound photocopy of the full orchestra score we used to make this edition to Ireland's National Library for its collection. I think that would please Mr Herbert.

Tomorrow morning I fly back to New York.

Larry, what a great thing to give to the Library!

Glad that it all went well for you. I wish you could stay on for a few more days (paid for by the producer) to see more of Ireland. This time of year is a wonderful time to be there. You could stay in a thatched roof bed and breakfast, you could kiss the Blarney Stone (though that's on the West side of Ireland), you could mosey into Belfast. All sorts of fun things.

This damned hotel computer does not like my modifying a post, so let's try the TOD again!

I learned to read from record labels by the age of four, and my favorite record then was Fiedler and the Boston Pops and ;Sabre Dance.' Later, it was Tchaikovsky's dance of the little swans from SWAN LAKE, by that point I had seen Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND and my Little Golden Recored of songs from the movie became my obsession. The most moving song I remember as a child was the Weavers' recording of 'Good Night, Irene,' which moved me to buckets of tears. Still does. I have no idea why.

Okay, they've probably finished cleaning my room, so I've got more things to accomplish today. After my walk to the pharmacy, I stopped into thre Bank of Ireland for some currency exchange and I found DR MBarnum's next fantasy. So, Mikey, plan your trip to Dublin for 2051. He should pay me a fee for my help.

Title: Re: MUSIC
Post by: Ron Pulliam on August 25, 2011, 08:15:15 AM
TOD:  I guess I've always responded to music of one sort or another.   I remember playing my grandfather's 78 rpm. records...specifically, Les Paul and Mary Ford's "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" and "Whispering Hope."   I remember dancing to "The Bunny Hop" with my parents' friends.

When I got my first hi-fi record player (monaural only), I got a few 45 rpms with it including an Andy Williams 45 with Hawaiian songs, a Bing Crosby 45 with Christmas songs, and Alvin and the Chipmunks (The Chipmunk Song on one side.  Don't recall the flip side title).   Later, my mom ordered a box from Readers Digest and I had my first introduction to a variety of music types, including one album with film theme orchestrals.

Who can say where it really started, this film music passion, but I think it must have been the addition (by my mom) of "Exodus", the RCA LP, to my record collection.  It got played to death.  And, thus...."King of Kings" and "Mutiny on the Bounty" were Christmas presents in 1962.  And my first store-bought soundtrack was Elmer Bernstein's "To Kill A Mockingbird".

"South Pacific" and "Carousel" were among the first film musicals in my collection, preceded by "Bye Bye Birdie", "The King and I", "There's No Business Like Show Business" (all three gotten in one Christmas!), and "Mary Poppins" (one of the rare RCA pressings...a "club" offering).

My first "theatrical" LP was likely "Greenwillow" which I found in a cut-out bin in a Walgreen's in the early 60s.  Once theater became a passion, I slowly added those recordings (always pricier -- a buck higher, usually -- than soundtrack recordings).  I had "She Loves Me", found in a cut-out bin in the Navy Exchange in Jacksonville FL in 1972, and never played it until I was in Washington DC, circa 1978.   It had gone with me to Vicenza, Italy,  Athens, Greece and Naples, Italy.   When I finally sat on the floor and listened to both LPs, I was overwhelmed, overcome and full of self-chastisement.  That began a lifelong love affair with Barbara Cook whom I already knew from "The Music Man".

I was also certainly mesmerized by popular music.  One of the highlights was Mason Williams' "Classical Gas".  And the Richard Harris recordings were also a major delight.

I'm a man of moods...many moody moods...and sometimes I'm only in the mood for the downbeat...or the upbeat....or the vocal.  I prefer orchestral, as a rule, because I can "go anywhere" listening to something orchestral.   Vocal performances are very specific, but there are times when nothing will do but I MUST listen to Sondheim...or Herman...or Barbara Harris...or whomever.

I also have a yen for country music, on occasion...but generally of the Randy Travis/Clint Black sort.

And I love me my Classics.  Note the capital "C", please.

Yep, I checked weather.com to look at the map and saw that today's storms have nothing to do with Irene.  However, they are now calling for Irene to shift further west meaning she'll be hugging the coast more closely if not directly.

How can one tell if one's house has hatches and how does one go about battening them down?  Do I need to batten them back up afterwards?  Do they sell self-battening hatches?

Southern Expression of the Day:

"I suwanee".   It's pronounced "I SWAN-ee".  It means "I swear".

I've read that it's on its way out of usage.  I blame several decades of yankee influx down south.  They just didn't cotton to it, I guess. ;D

Do you reckon his voice was dubbed?

CDs are shipped, I've done the four-mile jog, and Juliana and her boyfriend are running ten minutes late, which is par for the course for them.  I have to be back here by two and the later they are the harder it will be to get in somewhere to lunch.

DR Ginny, I would have preferred a pint of Haagen Daz as well, but after seeing myself in the many many mirrors on the walls of my room's bathroom, it's time for a salad-only diet for at least six months.

Today, I will pack,  make a visit to the pharmacy around the corner for aspirin with codiene - I'm stocking up for my next crippling round of sciatica or whatever it was that laid me low in 2009

Good luck with your diet.  Losing weight should also help with the sciatica, or whatever it is.  Are you able to purchase the meds without a script?  Are they less expensive there than home even with insurance?

I've decided as well that I'm going to give my bound photocopy of the full orchestra score we used to make this edition to Ireland's National Library for its collection. I think that would please Mr Herbert.

That is very nice of you & I'm sure it will be appreciated.

one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you."

There's an AP story on the internet right now associated with Hurricane Irene.

It's headline:  "Sarah Jessica Parker prepares for Hurricane Irene".

I thought maybe I would be reading about a very timely show -- possibly improv -- with Parker playing Irene.  But, no.

She and her family are "battening" down the hatches, so to speak.  She and hubby and twin daughters and son.

Oh...and she has a new movie coming up.

The "timely" story, plucked from the the most immediate of today's top news, is by one Nicole Evatt.  Must be with the "entertainment" wing of the AP.

Seriously, though, of all the people on the Eastern Seaboard that I might have been worried about in the face of Hurricane Irene, it was NOT Sarah Jessica Parker and her family.

Sometimes, the trite is just so jejune.

LOL I had no idea he did these movies.

Oops, it appears FENCES is finished for the season.  THE AFRICAN COMPANY looks interesting:

In 1820s Manhattan, a homegrown company of free black actors, passionate about creating art out of their own experience, draws packed houses of blacks—and whites. Performing jobs of servitude by day, they rehearse Richard III at night. But when they dare to open at the same time as New York’s premiere theatre opens its own Richard III, there is no room for competition. Based on a real incident, this provocative play is a must-see for Shakespeare and theatre history lovers—and anyone else who cares to ask: Who owns Shakespeare’s words?

MEDICAL UPDATE

Well, today was the day that I finally got to see the neurosurgeon.  Dr. Alex Mohit is an extremely nice and reassuring surgeon; and his Physician's Assistant, Gabrielle, is also terrific.  The nurse who first took me to the exam room, said that I had the greatest team I could have with that doctor and that PA.

First off, the doctor prescribed an AFO brace for my left leg.  He said that it should give me enough support of my foot, that I may not need to use the wheelchair any more.  Instead, I may go back to using the cane.  We shall see after I pick it up tomorrow.

Secondly, the MRI shows the damage to the vertebrae, but Dr. Mohit said that he will need a CAT Scan to see how much nerve damage there might be.  St. Joe's will call me next week to schedule the CAT scan, and as soon as I have that appointment booked; I am supposed to call the surgeon's office and get my second appointment scheduled.

Finally, they were a little surprised that I was trying to keep working, but they filled out the Shared Leave Form saying that I should be working no more than one or two days a week, and no more than four hours at a time.  That would be terrific,  but if nobody donates any leave, I am still in the poor house.  So, that form is being submitted tomorrow, so cross your fingers that someone or several someones have a lot of leave that they would like to donate to me.

That is all the news that is fit to print for the moment.  I am feeling a lot better about everything, at least, for now.  I will keep you all informed; if you all promise to keep me in your prayers.

When I was fourteen or so, I joined the Columbia Record Club.  I was not very good about mailing back the Monthly Selection Card, so i ended up with a lot of unwanted records.  However, one album that I ordered was played over and over during my teen years.  It was an album that contained THE WARSAW CONCERTO, RHAPSODY IN BLUE, SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE, and one or two other classical pieces.  It was heaven.

I received an email my first library ebook was available.  Having no idea how complicated this would be I clicked to check it out.  I then had 30 minutes to download it or it would disappear.  To my surprise it was not a simple act to download as first I had to open an account with adobe & then download it to my computer.  When Keith saw what was involved he said he didn't have the time to do it right then so Craig came to my rescue.

I just finished reading WILD SWANS http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1848.Wild_Swans and need to begin one of my library books.  Since my other two books are still at the library waiting to be picked up I am very grateful to have GIRL IN TRANSLATION waiting for me on my Nook.  I suspect it might be a let down after Swans http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7362158-girl-in-translation

And as for my birthday...

Since I will not be able to start off my day walking across the Brooklyn Bridge like I have the past three years, I think I'm going to walk across the Key Bridge from Roslyn to Georgetown. Or at least spend a few hours in Georgetown before heading to the theatre for tomorrow afternoon's rehearsal.

And as for my birthday (part deux)...

I was planning on heading back to NYC after Sunday night's show so that I could celebrate my birthday in NYC on Monday, but since Irene seems to have limited my travel options on Sunday night and Monday morning, well...

It is interesting seeing that the forecast for Monday for both NYC and DC call for sunny skies. Hopefully, there won't be any water-logged roads to deal with.

Since I do have rehearsal tomorrow afternoon, and since I want to have a couple of hours to myself in the morning...

Goodnight.

TCB is it the same in your office as in George's that not everyone can donate their leave time?  I think it is nice this is possible & hope it happens for you.

Yes, i believe that someone has to have over 180 hours of sick leave, or 80 hours of annual.  I think!

At the library, we can only donate vacation (annual) leave, not sick leave.  But we only have to have 60 hours of vacation (after we donate).  I have a LOT of sick leave, but we can't donate it.
