Well, you've read the notes, the notes were colorful despite being in black-and-white, and now it is time for you to post until the colorful cows come home.

So far, so good...

When I boarded, the two seats next to me were filled - I had the window seat. However, once the cabin doors were closed, I was able to move up two rows to my own row. Yay!

*The couple in the two seats next to me kept repacking their carry-on luggage. In the course of their repacking, I noticed two TV remotes, an issues of TV Guide, a Nintendo console, and a Disney Princesses fleece throw. ::)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I kind of remember always having a television. The only specific memories I have are of going to Sears with my dad whenever he had to buy new tubes for our huge black and white console. I always wanted to place them on that big testing console.

I think we got our first color TV when I seven or eight-years old. And my first memories of a television show in color: "Sesame Street", "New Zoo Revue", "Captain Kangaroo", "That Girl!", and "Love, American Style" (those fireworks! ;)).

Good morning, all! I awoke around 5:45 with a terrible charley horse in my left calf. I haven't had one in some time, so that alarms me. I tried to go back to sleep, and decided the hell with it around 6:30. I got up, bathed and spent some time on Google reading about the muscular cramp referred to as a charley horse. I suspect I'll be hobbling about most of the day.

Today I'm seeing for the first time in at least fifteen years my friend Lee, with whom I worked for several years at The Drama Book Shop. He's been living in Los Angeles for some time, and he's back to NYC this week. We've spoken on the phone several times since he moved, but it will be fun to catch up.

DR John G, I'm sorry to hear about your uncle's situation.

Although I'm late in typing this,

Off to get ready for work.  Oh well.

TOD:

I don't remember NOT having a television set.....the first one I remember was very small, and had a door on the front that could be closed so it looked like a cabinet.  Black and white of course.....and the first show I remember watching is Santa Claus...a local show with kids - and I wanted to be on it, but I never was.

First color set was around 1963 or so....BONANZA was big.  But when we got the television on a Saturday, the first show that we saw in color, was Midwestern Hayride, a square dance and country music show from WLW in Cincinnati which was shown on its sister station WLWI in Indy.

DR JRand61, I love your attitude. I've worked for the past year - and vowed never again - with a wonderful talent who folds up and is unable to work if he has something as innocuous as the hiccups. He's like a southern belle swooning on a divan with the vapours. His hypochondria and attitude are ridiculous, and he wonders why his career never went anywhere!

I remember my family clustered about a small picture with moving black and white images in a dark room of my grandmother's house around 1949, when I was three. My earliest memories of television beyond that are my grandmother watching Gorgeous George and other wrestlers late in the evening and my brother Macbeth and me watching "Howdy Doodie" and "Kukla, Fran & Ollie."

First color television around 1965. The program was the remake of "Peter Pan" with Mary Martin.

Oh yes....Peter Pan is color.....but it was very weird because Peter was played by a very old woman....and he kept saying he wanted his shadow, and we could see it clearly on the wall behind "him."

Greetings from Toyland! The taxi ride down here was interesting: flashing police cars all over midtown, heavy traffic, and it see,s to me a general feeling of alarm and unease. I'm sure a lot of it is the 9/11 weekend, but I've noticed a lot of indications in the past week on the tv and subway announcements that something unpleasant is anticipated. I can only hope this is due to the anniversary and to the government's spy network.

I'm at Toyland, primed to use the scanner but nothing is working; I blame my colleague Curtis who's put passwords only he can use all over the equipment and then left the country for six months. Since there are essentially only two of us in the office currently, it seems a lot of bullshit and paranoia on his part. I am not amused. I'm downright angry.

Too many errands this morning. But on the topic of the day, I remember we didn't have a TV set until I was six or seven, and it was given to us by people down the street. It didn't last too long, but by then I was hooked on reruns of "Gilligan's Island" and "Dark Shadows" and the like. When we got our own black and white set, Mom got with S&H Green Stamps. It was a Zenith 20-inch portable. Portable yet very heavy. I doubt the plastic handle could have been used by itself too many times.

Like JRand, I don't remember NOT having a television. Nor can I remember the first show I ever watch on it....a lot of kids shows and those dinner-time Western that always showed up around 6-6:30 at night...Roy Rogers, Wild Bill Hickox, The Texas Rangers.  Ohh, and THE WHIRLYBIRDS with Chuck and P.T. and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD with Richard Greene

My grandfather had the first colour TV and the first things I remember watching were  Cincinnati Reds Baseball, The Rose Parade, Disney's Wonderful World of Colour, and a little later Bonanza.

I bought my own first TV, the summer between my freshman and junior year in college, around 1969 a small b&w portable that cost me $69 dollars...maybe 13 inch screen.  I had it for many a year and it travelled with me everywhere, especially when on tour as an actor in dinner theatre. I didn't mind b&w because mostly I watched old b&w movies on it. I finally got a colour TV in LA, around 1978-79, $400 bucks, 26-inch screen.

TOD  I don't remember not having a TV.  I also don't remember if we always had color, I don't think so...I remember it was a big deal when we got a color console tv in a big maple cabinet.   We could get chanels 2-13 and had to get up and turn the channel.  Since we lived in the middle of nowhere tv wise, we always had cable...that's how we got 2-13.

TOD:

As I recall, we didn't get a TV until the early 1950s...primarily because of our location on Seattle's Capital Hill made it difficult to get a reception.  When we finally did get a set, our antenna was about 8-10 feet tall.

The very first show I ever watched on our set was THE LONE RANGER.  It was the opening episode.  [Years later, Clayton Moore and I became neighbors in Calabasas, CA.]

I don't recall having a color TV in our house.  I think my mother got one after I'd moved to Los Angeles in 1963.

Ingalls Mall in Ann Arbor is not a shopping center.  It's the north-south expanse that runs from the Rackham Building to the Graduate Library, flanked on the west by Burton Memorial Tower and Hill Auditorium and on the east by the Michigan League and Alumni Center:

Title: Re: IN LIVING COLOR
Post by: Ginny on September 10, 2011, 09:39:55 AM
I suspect the photo in my previous post was taken from Burton Tower.  The gray building with the green roof is Rackham and the 2 red brick buildings are the Alumni Center and the Michigan League.  The League used to be the Women's League; it was built as a female student union when Michigan Union was men only.  Even though that restriction had been lifted by the time I enrolled, I spent hours and hours in the League because it was more convenient than the Union.  The Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre is part of the League and that's where I saw Jimmy Stewart and Helen Hayes in HARVEY.

My visit with my friend Lee was nice but too short.

Oct 2, 1982 was the day we met. He says I was his first friend in New York. He was right out of high school in Indiana, as I recall, and he had wandered into Theatrebooks, where I was working at the time. My part of the store was the musical theatre space with books, libretti, scores and records, and everyone came there to hang out before, between, and after shows. On a good Saturday, you'd run into my friend Lee, Ethan Mordden, Ken Mandelbaum, Larry Blank, John Esche, Tommy Krasker who was assisting Maury Yeston with NINE, occasionally Bert Fink, Steve Ross, and assorted friends accompanying them. It was there that Larry Blank introduced me to Harvey Schmidt, for whom he'd conducted the disastrous COLETTE with Diana Rigg. It was at Theatrebooks that Steve Ross introduced me to Cyrano's leading lady Leigh Beery, who's now Mrs Jonathan Tunick, and there that Lewis Stadlen ran into the late great Julie Kurnitz and they spent an hour telling stories about being in MINNIE'S BOYS.

Forgot to put up the new release at midnight - was so tired I just plum forgit.  So, here it is - you know the deal - 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) to kritzerland at adelphia dot net via paypal.

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release, first time on CD:

MEN IN WAR
Music Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein

“Tell me the story of the foot soldier and I will tell you the story of all wars.”

Men In War is a terrific movie directed by Anthony Mann (El Cid, The Fall Of The Roman Empire, Winchester ’73, The Naked Spur), and starring Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray.  It takes place in one day, September 6, 1950 during the Korean war, as we follow a platoon of bone-weary foot soldiers who’ve been cut off from their division.  Without radio contact, and with nerves frayed, their leader, Lieutenant Benson tries to get them to a hill where he believes their division is.  The film is beautifully written (credited to Philip Yordan and based on the novel Day Without End by Van Van Praag), and beautifully shot in black-and-white by Ernest Haller (all filmed in Hollywood’s Bronson Canyon). Robert Ryan turns in his usual great performance as Benson, and Aldo Ray as “Montana” is also excellent.  But every performance in the film is wonderful – Robert Keith is a lesson in great film acting as the Colonel – he speaks exactly one word in the film and that’s in the last five minutes, but there’s an entire screenplay going on in his eyes.  The rest of the supporting cast makes the most of their screen time – Nehemiah Persoff, Phillip Pine, Vic Morrow, James Edwards, L.Q. Jones, and Scott Marlowe all get their moments to shine.

Tying all of its elements together is the fantastic score of Elmer Bernstein.  Bernstein did three films for Mann – Men In War, The Tin Star, and God’s Little Acre (all three of which have been released on Kritzerland – in fact, with this release Kritzerland has issued the entirety of Bernstein’s 1957 output with the exception of Sweet Smell Of Success – his four other films that year were Fear Strikes Out, Men In War, The Tin Star, and Drango – all currently available as limited edition CDs), and all three scores are great and all three are completely different.  Men In War begins with drums and jagged orchestral stabs, and then it is by turns pensive, intense, propulsive, brooding, and suspenseful as it captures the moods of the soldiers as they trudge on through dangerous terrain, with their tensions at the breaking point.

Men In War was originally released on Imperial Records in mono.  There was a release in “stereo” but it was a weird fake “stereo” with some sort of spread and trying to shift things into different channels arbitrarily and not very well.  Obviously, we are issuing the recording in mono, as it was recorded.  The tapes, housed in the Capitol/EMI vaults, were in great condition and the mono sound is full-bodied and crisp, clean, and clear.

This is Kritzerland’s seventh Elmer Bernstein release, and we would be happy to just keep releasing all of his never before on CD scores.  Elmer Bernstein was one-of-a-kind and his music is part of the landscape of cinema.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the second week of October – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I don't have a great deal to do with that side of the family, but it's made mel sad. Talked with my dad for awhile, or let him talk for awhile, actually, while I listened to a few memories. This is the first of his siblings to pass. It's good to know he's at peace with the news.

Thank you all for the vibes and prayers. They do help.

Dear John G, I am really sorry to hear this.

I thought I'd posted something but it's sure vanished!

The day's been interesting and frustrating: printer hell, mostly because Curtis is tied up somewhere in Europe with Kevin Spacey's show - they were in Athens the first week of August and I have no idea where they are now - and I suspect he was trying to deal with me while in performance. He says he'll check things out later, but it made for a frustrating day. On the plus side, I scanned a lot of Kern orchestra parts and visited with Lee. Now, I'm very tired and wanting a nap.

This day is needlessly frustrating and I'm having visions of killing a co-worker. Because he's a control freak, everything in rthis office is under his thumb abnd since he's out of the country, nothing is workable.

If you decide to make your vision a reality, plan carefully.  You don't want to get caught.

I'd never seen it before.

I got a little more feedback from Matt H regarding new shows.

I've also read great things about RINGER, the new Sarah Michelle Geller show (it's on the CW), so I'll check it out, too. I also want to give PRIME SUSPECT with Maria Bello a try. I know it can't be as good as the BBC version was with Helen Mirren, but I read it's going to be a whodunit a week rather than one long case over the span of a season, so I'll like that better if the show is any good.

I don't get the CW. But the Ringer is one that was already on my list. There is a Canadian channel that is picking it up on Fridays.

I think Prime Suspect is on Thurs at 10pm. And since i already have 2 shows at that time (Private Practice and The Mentalist) i will pass.

I don't know why they decided to move it to Sundays. I believe it will be on at 9pm after The Amazing Race.Luckily I get TAR on a Canadian channel. And The Good Wife is also on a Canadian channel, although it will be Sundays at 10pm. But probably easier for me to just record it then.

My brother-in-law is a big Michigan fan. But for some reason i don't think they are showing the game here. CBS has the US Open. And TSN (our sports network) probably also has tennis. I think he went to his best friend's house who has all kinds of extra college stations.

You'd think since it is a fairly big game that they would show it here.

Today and tomorrow is my niece's soccer tournament. They are playing on a different field from their regular games. Boy was I in for a surprise when i got there. There were hundreds and hundreds of people there. There were at least 4 huge fields with all levels of kids. All playing at the same time.

After her game they had free train rides and little boat rides. Luckily the train pulled up just as we got there. And since it was so far away from where the kids were playing there was not a line up!

Not sure if I will get it in HD. The channel it is on does have HD. But i mostly record in my bedroom where i don't get HD. But it is still digital cable and very clear.

I wish i got the CW since i really like a lot of their shows.

There is a station WGN that i could get that carries all their shows. But it is only on a more expensive cable package.

There is one show that I don't think is on any station i get called Hart of Dixie. It stars Rachel Bilson who i like. I would have watched that show if i got it.

But there are some CW shows that are not picked up by any Canadian stations. Secret Circle is (which i will try).

I watched the previews for HEART OF DIXIE & thought you might like it.  I don't know if any of the CW stations are in HD for not as we don't get the satellite/cable stations.  I'm 99% sure our local station will be unwatchable.

Well, I'm at my sister's house, ketchuping on HHW and my e-mail.  The reason that I'm at my sister's is that my cable Internet access has stopped and I don't know why!  My TV is fine, though.  I called Comcast and the technician worked with me for about 30 minutes over the phone, doing different things from his end and things on my end.  Nothing worked. :P So, someone is going to come to my house on Monday, between 10 am and noon.

Back from the party, which was, for me, excruciating (I don't like these sorts of things - too many people), save for seeing some nice people I know - including Amanda McBroom (she's going to come and do a Kritzerland evening soon), Michelle Brourman, Adryan Russ, David Zippel and others.  They had a performance - I left an hour into it as I had to meet Melody and family for dinner - but I would have left anyway.  Very little traditional musical theater songs in that first hour - mostly faux rock stuff, from shows that are workshopping - just not my thing.  Biggest amusement to me was when someone listed all the hits of Diane Warren (she was there - a duo sang two of her songs) - I hadn't heard of a single one, which shows you how much I know.
