Well, you've read the notes, the notes were decisive, and now it is time for you to post until the decisive cows come home.

Yesterday, I finished formatting the acting edition of my one-person play, (Al) JOLSON, and now I am awaiting arrival (next week) of the proof copy for final corrections.

When finished, it will be available in both a paperback and Kindle edition.

Still hot here in Istanbul. We had a few raindrops last night but the thunderstorm forecast for today didn't arrive, in fact it's been mainly sunny. Visited the magnificent Ayasofya, previously a mosque but now a museum, as well as the Blue Mosque. Rode on the vintage tram which runs along the main shopping street, Istiki Al Cad. Plus, of course, lots of eating and drinking is going on!

Good morning, all! Too many Drama Book Shop dreams and one about a swimming pool and my Barnes & Noble manager Patty gave me a rather restless night. It didn't help that I was tipsy.

Yesterday afternoon, I met David Brophy, the conductor of EILEEN, at the Comfort Inn on 36th and 10th Avenue (oy!) where he and the RTE Concert Orchestra are being put up for this event at Alice Tully Hall tonight. My reaction was, why did you put one of your best performance groups in such a dump? I arrived there at 3, and the group showed up around 3:20 and checked in. David and I ran down to the Irish Rep at 22nd Street so he could meet a friend from RIVERDANCE whose staging the current production there.
http://www.irishrep.org/noctu.html

After that, we walked up Eighth Avenue to 45th Street, sat in a bar with a pint, and caught up. At 6, we walked over to Joe Allen's and met Bruce, Rob, and Joshie for a wonderful birthday dinner. A very good time was had by all, and we rolled out of the restaurant around 8:45. I walked Brce over to his apartment and caught a cab uptown, posted and went to bed.

Today, I have little to do beyond work on recording notes. Tonight, I will trot down to Alice Tully Hall around 6pm, meet David in the lobby and get my ticket for the event.

Congrats on the sell out BK but I hope this doesn't mean that Kritzerland will become an '80s and '90s label - we have enough of those already! (I know it won't really because I know, like me, you love those '50s and '60s scores).

DS Craig could use some mega travel vibes.  He attempted to check in on-line and it said he has to take the same flights tomorrow as he will miss his connection in San Francisco.  He just left for the airport.  If he can't get on the flight to SF he is screwed.  If he can get to SF there are multiple options to get him to his destination.

We are shocked.  When Bryan's flight in SF was canceled simply put him on another flight out of SF which is what they normally do.

My faith in technology was greatly improved yesterday.  When visiting my mom at the rehab center yesterday, I dropped my iPhone into a puddle of water in the parking lot.  It was submerged!  I promptly picked it up and wrapped it in my handkerchief.  Then I did the one thing you are not supposed to do with a wet iPhone--I turned it on.  But wonder of wonders, it still worked!  However, I noticed that the sound coming out of the phone speaker was very low and the camera lens was wet on the inside which resulted in fuzzy images.

I did a quick web search and found what to do next.  On the way home I stopped at the super market and bought a bag of rice.  When I got home, I shoved my phone into the rice and sealed it closed and left it there over night.  This morning the phone and camera were both fine.  I'll repeat this treatment for a few days.

I just hope it continues to work until the iPhone 5 comes out...

Thanks Jack and Ginny!  I survived ASTD.  It was actually pretty fun.  The keynote speaker was Garth Stein, who wrote (among others) "The Art of Racing In the Rain," a novel told from the point of view of a dog.  Not really spoilers here but he dies at the beginning of the book and I think it's about him telling about his life with his owners and something about dog reincarnation.  I bought a copy, but I missed getting his autograph.  Oh, well.  It does sound like a very good book, so I think I'll read it anyway.

And speaking of Tarzan, at the gym yesterday, after my workout, I went into the steam room followed by the tall, buff and completely nekkid young Fireman guy who also goes to my gym.

Before long there were about a half dozen other guys in the steamroom....which is about a half dozen more then normal.

After buff Fireman guy left, so did the others. Coincidence? I think not.

Doug, I never have a prob doing an 80s or 90s score if it's something that I personally like and that I think will do well.  However, there are only a handful of 80s and 90s scores that I like and we've already done several of them, so no danger there.  Mostly it will be sixties and seventies for the next dozen releases, with a couple of 50s things.

It would help if those sequences weren't thought of as flashbacks.  Carrie has a perfect memory...absolutely everything about every moment is locked in her brain.  Those sequences were of her remembering those days more carefully.  Are they flashbacks?  Well, sure, but not in the conventional sense of the word.

So few people have perfect memory, and those who do can recall details you wouldn't believe.  I have no idea of a better way to show the main character examining her memory than with that visual device of showing us what she experienced...and from all the different angles.   It would be pretty dull if they just photographed her frozen in thought!  :)  Id' say they're absolutely essential to the show.  It will either fly or die by them.

I suppose I could have said "out of body experience" instead of "flashback".  LOL regarding the frozen in thought, though at times it looked like that to us which is why we felt it needed to stay in "first person" vs the "out of body" look.  I agree it is essential to the show and am sure it is a challenge to find the best way to do it.  I think I would have preferred black & white film, or some sort of other texture, than to watch her staring off & having an of body experience. ;D  We shall wait & see where the show goes next week.

So...

It turned out that the bus I got on last night makes a stop in Brooklyn before heading into Manhattan's Chinatown. I was a little worried at first that the bus was just stopping in Brooklyn, but the driver started shooing people back on to the bus who had wanted to get off for a smoke break... And ten minutes later, we were on East Broadway. :)

*And, thankfully, due to the rain last night, all of the construction on the NJ Turnpike was cancelled. The driver made great time from DC to NYC.

And...

I got off the bus, walked two blocks... And some punk teenager stopped me... "You got any money? Empty your pockets."

I did get a bit worried at first, but then I assessed the situation... We were two blocks from a subway stop... There were some other people walking around... Because his pants for soooooo loose in that "gangsta" manner, there was no way he could have been gripping and hiding a gun in his waist band... He also just kept talking and talking and talking... Eventually, after I kept repeatedly telling him, "No, I'm not going to empty my pockets," he cracked a smile and said, "I'm just joking. (Duh!) My name is XXXXX XXXXX.

I'm going to be famous some day."

-"I'm sure your are."

Good thing that it wasn't a real mugging!  I can't imagine what I would've done!  I don't think I would've had the presence of mind to assess the situation. :-\

bk - As per the long version of your webisode: Have you considered posting it in two parts? A lot of web series do that - mainly to cut down the download times for their viewers.

Or what about putting up both versions?  You could call it the "director's cut" or "extended version."

Good breakfast meet-up with my friend, Tyler.

Good lunch meet-up with my friends, Eric and Pete.

Successfully found a birthday gift for my niece, Alyssa.

Had a nice stroll and browse through Chelsea Market and The Strand Bookstore.

Alas, no nap.

DR Jane - According to my friend, Brendan, who is a pilot, this is a strangely busy travel week. It could be that any of Craig's possible flight options were just no longer available without "risking" flying stand-by and hoping for a cancellation or no-show.

I think it was an on-line problem as everything was fine when he got to the airport & checked in.  His flight to SF left a few minutes late as it was delayed in SF (which might have triggered the online info) but arrived in SF on time.  His flight from SF to Chicago was delayed giving him plenty of time to catch it, which is good news & bad news.  Once in Connecticut he needs to pick up his car rental & find a place to crash for a few hours.  He sleeps ok on red-eyes & would have booked it had it not been several hundreds dollars more.

We love details of what you're eating and drinking....there are a lot of foodies here!  Have a great time!

Jose, it wouldn't work in two parts - and it's only a minute or so longer than the short version, running 7:30 instead of the 6:30 the others run.  I'm still thinking about it and will actually have the option of using either.  Also, if we use the short version, I'll put the long version of the two songs on our website.

But why cancel the flight that was available even if they dropped him from the connecting flight in SF?  That was what worried him so, that he couldn't get to SF.  There were multiple airport options he could have flown to before renting a car and driving to the wedding.

Thanks for the travel vibes, Elmore. I made it to Albany and then Catskill safely and on schedule with a stop at an excellent Greek restaurant for dinner. Not the usual gyro, pressed meat, but some fine vegetables and cheeses. The vegetarian options looked so good, I skipped on the meat.

Dessert was galaktabouriko, my favorite, which had a touch of orange blossom water in the egg custard and not too much honey on the phyllo dough. So the end result was light and exotic (well, OK, my one bite was).

There are huge numbers of stray cats in Istanbul as well as packs of dogs running around. The cats hang around by restaurants hoping for scraps from the diners sitting at the outside tables. I pulled up a chair at one restaurant to find a cat asleep on it - I didn't disturb it and restaurant staff seem quite happy to have the cats around. They also wander in and out of shops, and even hotels.

From DR George:
Quote
Thanks Jack and Ginny!  I survived ASTD.  It was actually pretty fun.  The keynote speaker was Garth Stein, who wrote (among others) "The Art of Racing In the Rain," a novel told from the point of view of a dog.  Not really spoilers here but he dies at the beginning of the book and I think it's about him telling about his life with his owners and something about dog reincarnation.  I bought a copy, but I missed getting his autograph.  Oh, well.  It does sound like a very good book, so I think I'll read it anyway.

Was he interesting?  I fought against reading this book & when I finally did was surprised I enjoyed it.

He was interesting and funny and thoughtful...and quite attractive. ;) Although, I didn't get to see him up close.

for a moment there I thought that was Mike talking about BNFMG*

I finished watching RKO 281 - quite bad.  Then I watched the first thirty minutes of The Magnificent Ambersons.  If there's a better opening thirty minutes of any film I haven't seen it.

Good Evening!

...And FOLLIES was the perfect way to end a truly wonderful day off in New York City. I can't wait to get back here on October 3rd and be a New Yorker again for a few weeks.

Since I have to be on a train back to DC in seven hours, all I will say right now about FOLLIES is that is a totally different show from what I saw at the Kennedy Center. Still not a "perfect" production of an imperfect version of the script, but, frankly, I loved it.

...And Bryn Terfel sat behind me, and Bette Midler was across the aisle from me too. Katherine Heigl was there tonight too. Man, is she gorgeous(!!!!!).

Hello -  As I think DR elmore mentioned about New York--it's uncomfortably humid here even though it's not hot.

Ditto.

DR Cillaliz - Do you prefer to be called a "flutist" or "flautist"?

;)

Flutist.  Flautist never sounded like a good thing to be to me

Neither does horn blower, but I wear the name with pride.

:o ;D ;)  :-X ;) :)

DR JohnG - Galaktabouriko is my favorite Greek dessert! My favorite Greek place in Richmond used to make an incredible version. One time, I soooooo wanted a slice, but it had just come out of the oven yet. After some "begging", Stella cut, well scooped me out a slice. It was the most amazing custard/pudding/dessert soup I've ever had.

I'm going to be famous some day."

-"I'm sure your are."

Then I hailed a cab uptown.

He'll be a famous headline: IDIOT TEEN THREATENS WRONG PERSON AND DIES

Alas, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Jose, it wouldn't work in two parts - and it's only a minute or so longer than the short version, running 7:30 instead of the 6:30 the others run.  I'm still thinking about it and will actually have the option of using either.  Also, if we use the short version, I'll put the long version of the two songs on our website.

Gotcha.

I picked up a very unexpected package - the first 100 Nudie Musical Blu and Rays, which look great all shrink wrapped and packaged.  I'll be sending a number of these on to Chicago early next week, along with my memoir.

bk - If you happen to need any restaurant recommendations for Chicago.... ;)

I'm tipsy from the Guinness, but I am back from a quite wonderful evening with the RTE Concert Orchestra and its wonderful conductor David Brophy. The event at Alice Tully Hall consisted of two parts: the first half being two short silent fllm made by a contemporary Irish fiim maker, both a combination of sci fi, fantasy, and employing film clips of Dubl9n from 75 years ago or longer. One of the shorts THE UNUSUAL INVENTIONS OF HENRY CAVENDISH was accompanied by a solopiano. The second THE LACTATING AUTOMATON was rather a sad piece about a child raised by a robot., and it was accompanied by the concert orchestra, The film composer was there, and the score, abot 15 minutes long, was absolutely delightful.

The second half of the event was introduced by Gabriel Byrne; it was a restored print of a 1933 silent film THE GUESTS OF THE NATION, based on a Frank O'Connor story that has also inspired THE CRYING GAME and Brendan Behan's wonderful tragicomedy THE HOSTAGE. The film, about 50 minutes in length, features actors Barry Fitzgerald and Cyril Cusack, along with a lot of actors from the Abbey Theatre  and is about the IRA capturing two British soldiers they plan to assassinate if the British army hangs two IRA prisoners. It's a film about the friednship developing between the two Brits and their captors and the tragedy once the hanging occurs. I was in tears at the end. The new film score is beautiful and the orchestration so fine that the 22 players in the orchestra sounded twice the size. The music featured a lot of Gaelic melodie and hadexcellent transparencies with beautiful harp, flute and English horn solos. I got to tak to both composers and tell them how much I admired their work.

After David and I got through the reception - and I noticed a very handsome man there with a mighty fit physique that I thought might be a future interview for our DR MBarnum - David and I went to PJ Clark's where the orchestra was partaying. I got to see three players from the EILEEN orchestra - harp, percussion, and viola, so that was a lot of fun, I caught up with Brophy on his day in Manhattan, and then the handsome man from the reception showed up and asked me if i were Irish and what I had to do with the event!

He is a retired boxer named John Duddy, who's going into acting, and we talked about thirty minutes. He is by no means a dumb jock, but he could certainly play one, and I think he's a genuinely good person.  Hopefully, he'll send me an email or give me a call. If I were an agent or manager, I'd sign him up. I think he will have a good career.

Mikey, what's your opinion?

How is the new job, td?

It's very invigorating, mentally.  I'm learning new names for old products, new recipes and new registers on a daily basis.  I've got the customer service down pretty well. . .;)

At this point, after a full week's worth of work, I'm finally beginning to relax and enjoy the ride.

DR td - Just continue to enjoy the ride. :)

Goodnight.

I did, DR Jose! Where were your tickets?

I'm really bummed that the idiot reviewers kept knocking Warren Carlyle for not being Michael Bennett and praising that idiot Schaeffer for a lot of the work Warren did.

Barry Pearl was here earlier, watching the three episodes - he agrees with me that the shorter version is best.

Row G on the aisle. Bryn Terfel was in Row H right behind me. Bette Midler was in Row F (and the texting bitch was in Row E). Katherine Heigl and TR Knight were down the row from Miss Midler. Joseph Stein's daughter was also in attendance tonight. -There were lots of industry folks there, in general.
