Title: WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR
Post by: bk on December 08, 2011, 01:25:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sixty-four, as am I, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing a song to me: "Happy birthday to MOO."  It's very sweet.

I am in the midst of laundry this morning, and this afternoon I need to check out the RH Burnside Collection at the Lincoln Center NYPL for all I can learn about a Rodgers & Hart song, "The Pipes of Pansy," something they liked that was cut from the scores of DEAREST ENEMY, PEGGY-ANN, SHE'S MY BABY and God knows what else.

I'm hopng that there will be a copy of the piano-vocal score for the song in the Burnside Collection.

After that, I will assemble my scores for tomorrow's project, chill ot and watch a bit of tv. I've got THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN here and I really want to see it. It's a cast of who's who in NYC broadcasting and Broadway, 1956:
Martyn Green, still my favorite G&S patter song performer, in 1957 he replaced Max Adrian as Pangloss in the tour of CANDIDE
Robert Weede, the most happy fella
Robert Wright, who seemed to replace Alfred Drake in things like KISS ME, KATE
Johnny Desmond, who replaced Sydney Chaplin as Nicky Arnstein
Philippa Bevan, the original Mrs Pierce in MY FAIR LADY
John McGovern, whose Broadway career went all the way back to the GARRICK GAIETIES, and the original casts of ALL MY SONS and TEA AND SYMPATHY
John McGiver, I listened to him on the OBCR of THURBER CARNIVAL but my first memory of seeing him is in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S as the sales clerk

(Even if he doesn't know who I am...)

In keeping with the Beatles theme, a rousing verse of Today Is Your Birthday:

(singing loudly)

You say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy Birthday to You!

I would like you to dance
Take a cha-cha-chance Birthday ....

(and now I'm just humming it ...)

Happy Birthday and Many More!

(I remember not too many years ago celebrating it with the opening of The Brain From Planet X in LA ...)

Hi DR Ginny ~ Nice to be seen. Doing great, thanks!

(Cason and I have been very E and T for so many reasons -- mostly good since they deal with being busy -- mainly with our local theatre. He's completing a 2-yr technical director term through AmeriCorps at the local civic theatre -- a very serendipitous opportunity -- and is now looking at going after his MFA next fall. It's been a real win-win I think for both our theatre and him -- and I've been able to work with him a lot on different shows and projects, so that's been fun)

I don’t have the DVD but I was watching a high definition TV broadcast of the 1965 Hitchcockian film Mirage starring Gregory Peck and Diane Baker. I saw the film when it was first released and always thought it an intriguing and enjoyable mystery thriller. With Gregory Peck suffering from amnesia, together with some surrealist flashbacks, the film invites comparison with Hitchcock's Spellbound. The film still holds up well although the dénouement is weak and unconvincing. When I first saw it I was disappointed that it was filmed in black and white because it came at a time when the majority of major films were being made in colour but the picture quality certainly looks good in HD.

And another major reason that I wanted to make sure I visited HHW today in addition to wishing BK a Happy BD, was to thank him for all the notches he helped to add to Cason's career belt. When Cason asked me to look over his resume he prepared for his application packets, it really hit home how much the opportunities offered by BK played a role in his career journey -- opportunities that provided so much personal and theatrical/business growth and such valuable experience.

Thanks, BK!!

DR Jane:  What episode of "Eureka" were you watching that was out of sync?   I watched the Christmas episode that aired night before last on SyFy.  Aside from playing perfectly, I thought it wonderfully inventive, creative.  I'd have liked it to be about 15 minutes shorter because I think it went on a bit long, but I don't believe there's a more creative writing staff (sci-fi-wise) working in TV today than the ones who write "Eureka".  The holographic wave that transformed everyone into cartoon characters (including Peanuts and Scooby and the Gang), claymation characters and anime characters was wonderful to behold.  A lot of work went into this episode and I thought it very funny, to boot.

DR Jane ~ Yes, up here in the High Country of AZ, we do get the 4 seasons. Had a major cold front move through this past weekend -- down in the teens at night, but its slowly warming up. 45 high predicted today with lows in the 20s. Even Phoenix got cold with this one. The nice thing about P-Town is we do get the 4 seasons -- but none of them are extreme. Flagstaff is more like Colorado and gets more of the snow. Here, we don't get hammered as much - and with our drought, there have been some winters with no snow. Last winter, several snows. With this one, we're off to an early start for this winter -- maybe -- this could be the only one. You never know in AZ ...

This is funny because yes, that was the episode I was referring to.  Initially I enjoyed it, however, not being a fan of cartoons I obviously missed a lot.  I asked Keith & he did catch the Scooby reference.  I laughed occasionally & had it not been so garbled, seriously garbled by the end of the show, I might have enjoyed it.  I preferred the clamation & anime to the cartoons.  I know it is silly but it bothered me Henry's wife wasn't at the Christmas gathering with him, at least I didn't see her.

Chilly, but no snow here. It snowed north of town the other day, though.

Some snow up here in the high country -- around 5-6 inches at my place last Friday and Sat, and a dusting on Monday -- mostly all melted now except for some white still in the shade/shadows.

I thought you normally have 4 seasons.  How cold is it there?

That has been exceptionally cold.  I would have gladly moved to Prescott when we came here.  It is a pretty town.

Happiest of birthdays to Papa Kimmel.

Speaking of which, I've joined the throng.  Adelaide Katz was born November 28: unbelievably beautiful and doing great.  Sleeps long stretches, rarely cries.  Latched on to Joy in her first hour of life like a pro.

Xmas song: I'm Happiest At Christmas deals with the state of being unhappy at a time in which everyone seems so cheerful.  It's part of The Christmas Bride, my musical opening in Portland, Maine at the Lucid Stage next week

I did manage to remember to order Guy Lombardo's Sing The Songs Of Christmas.  We had this album when I was a youngen and I've been waiting for years and years for a cd release.

This one is for the pure nostalgia of hearing it once again.  While the orchestra arrangements are fun and bouncy, they often get lost on this live recording behind the male vocalist (I don't recall his name) who basically leads a bunch of kids in a sing-a-long.  (The audience was obviously not inspired by the performance because you can hear the crowd talking throughout the entire album.)  Still, the cover photo is very pretty...

Yes, and a qualified yes.  The iClosing part was generally painless, though getting there had some bumps.  ING has been mostly OK, but they were a bit problematic a couple of times, overall I'd give them a solid B to B+.  All of that said, I'm still pinching myself that we have a fixed 2.75% rate.  We should have this house about 90% paid for by the end of the five year lock period and can either pay it off then or refinance.

Wow! 2.75%!! I'm glad that ING came through. I talked to them about some mortgage issues. I had the impression that were progressive, but they weren't progressive enough for my needs. 2.75 on a refi is indeed impressive.

I've been spending my birthday doing what I love most - writing.  Just wrote three songs for what will be episode eight of Outside The Box - so much fun!  Episode seven I'd already done two and a half songs for, so I may wrap that one up, too.  Then the other day I figured out what episode nine will be, and then I just have to do ten, eleven, and twelve.  I can only write the "show" portions of these right now, until I figure out who will be in them - once I know who, then I can write the set-up scenes.

2.75%??  Wow!  I refinanced at 5% almost four years ago.  I remember a co-worker telling me that she and her former husband (when they were still married) bought a house in the 1980s at 12% interest!  She also said that, at the time, that was a good deal.

The device mentioned by DR Jennifer sounds most interesting. I've never heard of such a device.

Some insurance companies are now offer roadside assistance as an option on car insurance. It's much cheaper than using the Auto Club.

I just sent the link to Keith as we might need it.  Now that the tire has been replaced Keith should be able to drive the car to get three more new tires, except the car won't start.  We thought the set up for the spare was strange, apparently the battery is hidden in the car & needs special tools to get to it.  Keith had to move the seat back to look for the battery & now the seat won't go forward again.  ::)

Needless to say Keith & our car could use some vibes.

I was listening to Andy Williams yesterday singing HAPPY HOLIDAY - THE HOLIDAY SEASON.  During the song the wrods are:

With the whoop-de-do and hickory dock
And don't forget to hang up your sock
"Cause just exactly at 12 o'clock
He'll be coming down the chimney

I was wondering if there is any other reference to Santa going down the chimney right at midnight.  It seems that Santa has enough problems getting down the chimney of every house in one night, but that becomes even more difficult if he has to be everywhere at midnight.

What make of car is this?  I want to make sure I never purchase one.

A Volkswagon, our first ever.

And then there is my Toyota that can't replace a $2.00 part without spending $1,000.00 on labor.

Yes, and why my car continues to have a small oil drip.  We really do have to get Keith's car out of the garage.  Too bad it started just long enough to get it into the garage after replacing the tire.

Needless to say Keith is rather grumpy after two days of this with more to look forward to.

I was about to jog when I thankfully remembered I had a meeting at the House of Pies - that meeting was VERY interesting and could potentially result in bringing back Lost and Unsung to LACC come next Fall.  That would be FUN.

He also ordered some sandals for our trip which haven't arrived & is attempting to track them.  You know what a pain that is.

2.75%??  Wow!  I refinanced at 5% almost four years ago.  I remember a co-worker telling me that she and her former husband (when they were still married) bought a house in the 1980s at 12% interest!  She also said that, at the time, that was a good deal.

It was indeed. We were newlyweds looking for a house. The rate was 17%, so we were thrilled when we were able to assume a mortgage at 10%!

We were thrilled to assume a mortgage at 6% for our first house.  I forget what the rate was at the time.

I had a very productive day of Christmas shopping, both online and at the mall.  When I got home, Richard had set up the Christmas tree in our family room and was in the process of solving the section of burned out lights.  Tomorrow we'll put the ornaments on.

Ginny, your Secret Twin works at Lake Oswego City Hall and helped us process the application for Zach's passport today.  I almost wanted to ask if we could take her picture so that you could see, but I decided it might not be appropriate.  :)

DR JMK - that would be an interesting picture to see!

the Voices were lovely but some of the songs..... oh dear!

"Rarely heard songs"  may be rarely heard for  a reason .... such as  no one wants to hear it!!!!

We listened to a beautifully sung song about someone who had no money in his pockets --- that was the whole song  over and over and over -- it needed a  few more lyrics -- we get it - empty pockets so what did you do about it?

Then there was the song about Democracy that had the entire audience longing for Communism by the end of it

but the voices -  they were glorious!!

I attended the Eastern campus  of this college (at the time it was the only campus!) and was active in the theatre but mostly backstage - lights, makeup , stage managing etc I only occassionally had a chance  to trod the stage  with small roles here and there ---  so I was very surprised to see a picture of the 19 years old ME  hanging on the wall  in the theatre lobby! It was fun to show it to the Vixter

Had a fabulous time at "An Evening with Garrison Keillor"  I really love listening to story tellers and he's one of the best.  We laughed and laughed, then he led the audience in a hymn and Christmas carols.  It was really a wonderful evening

I had a very nice birthday dinner at Barone's - you can probably smell the garlic on me from wherever you are - had a salad, a couple of pieces of garlic bread, and really garlicky scampi - all great.
