Well, you've read the notes, the notes had three writings, and now it is time for you to post until the writing cows come home.  They're currently writing their MOOmoir.

Good morning, all! I return to Encores! today to see what fresh new hell awaits me from Joshie. I think he promised me one of the longer and grislier numbers in the show.

I have little else to report. Thank you all for the vibes about the death of an acquaintance who will never become a better friend because of his death. I only knew him because he had blogged about JUBILEE at Ohio Light Opera and I sent him a message wishing him well. That led to several pleasant emails before the OLO management became upleasant.  The current avatar on his Facebook page is very haunting, and I found this youtube clip of him singing a William Finn song I like very much.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkfiDrN376U&feature=share

So, today is Encores! and then more DEAREST ENEMY work here. And that is the end of the news.

DR Laura, how's your knee?  I was sorry to hear about your fall.

We watched BEGINNERS last night.

Liked it.

Christopher Plummer should definitely get a Supporting Actor nomination...if not the Oscar itself.

Good Morning...

Had a terrible night's sleep--I kept dreaming all night, gyrating through the plots of DOWNTON ABBEY (yes, I'm obsessed!) and also believing that I needed to wake up an hour sooner than usual because I had to catch the milk man to tell him not to deliver any milk next week because I will be away (which makes no sense because I haven't had a milk man deliver since I was a youngen and I am not going anywhere next week.)

Wednesday morning greetings!  Remember, before I retired, that I hosted a brownbag lunch on the second Wednesday of the month?  Well, Richard and I are going to that event today because the subject matter is relevant to his work with our local historical society.  Afterwards, we're planning to visit the Dayton Art Institute to see their special exhibit of the works of Norman Rockwell.

Good Morning...

Had a terrible night's sleep--I kept dreaming all night, gyrating through the plots of DOWNTON ABBEY (yes, I'm obsessed!)

These mis-heard "Downton Abbey" thoughts from the New York Times' wonderful columnist Dave Itzkoff:

"So last night I tried that downtown Arby's everyone's been raving about. Didn't seem classy or British to me."

"Can't believe I still haven't met any drag queens named Downton Abbey. Nice viral marketing, PBS."

I would have, what with Petula apparently returning to NYC soon, but with DOWNTOWN ABBY / UPTOWN ANN LANDERS generating only 40 views (count 'em 40), i may pass on that one.  :)

News on Petula's show, very pricy:

I loved the pilot of that show. Can't remember much about it, except I was one of the few who seemed to enjoy it. Guess you did, too.

I remember somewhat enjoying it, particularly because it introduced me to Nancy Marchand and Kathryn Walker.  (A very young Linda Purl was in it, too.)  I also remember that it looked cheaply done, sets and costume-wise.

Of course, because I couldn't help myself, I'd done this when the prices for Petula's show were announced:

Tune of DON’T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY (Petula Clark recording)

You just read her news
And it gives you the blues
‘Cause you think there’s no way you can go, dear
(whoo-oo-oo-oo-oo)
You once were a snob
Now you’re out of a job
So you sweat that you can’t see Pet’s show, dear

But for a while just try to live less large
You’ll save enough to pay the cover charge

Try eating at Subway, darling
Try shopping at K-mart, hon
Save money at Subway, darling
Petula’s back
You know you wanna go
Get in the black
You’ll have the dough and have fun

(repeat chorus)

And thanks to Jrand and JohnG for putting those comments on the YouTube screen!!!

Yes, Ms Clark will get to show Los Angeles her "see how hard I'm acting" approach to the role. snce that seems to be the srandard approach to roles on the soap operas, perhaps she'll end up starring on "The young and the Hung" or whatever the hell it's called. I'm wondering if the Playbill article isn't her first use of a press agent on this show to remind the world what a great star she is. Oy!

Question for Elmore or anyone else who might know:

I picked up a bio of George Balanchine the other day that Robert Gottlieb wrote. In Gottlieb's credits is something he co-authored with Robert Kimball called "Reading Lyrics." I know Elmore knows Kimball, but I was wondering if any of you had read the book and if it were worth getting? What kind of book is it? Analysis of writing lyrics or content or what?  I've read some bits about it, but you can never really tell from the reviews.

Now, to DEAREST ENEMY.

I LOVE "Reading Lyrics". After an introductory chapter, all it basically is is a compilation of various lyrics by various lyricists. No real commentary, just the words. Those wonderful words.

I'm not sure if it's still in print - I haven't checked Amazon (yet) - but I picked up a library bound copy at a used bookstore on Fairfax in Los Angeles when I was out there for WHAT IF? I've also seen copies of it of Clearance Tables from time to time.

DR FJL, I'm surprised no one has done a Petula Clark "Downtown" parody yet.

Of course, because I couldn't help myself, I'd done this when the prices for Petula's show were announced:

Tune of DON’T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY (Petula Clark recording)

You just read her news
And it gives you the blues
‘Cause you think there’s no way you can go, dear
(whoo-oo-oo-oo-oo)
You once were a snob
Now you’re out of a job
So you sweat that you can’t see Pet’s show, dear

But for a while just try to live less large
You’ll save enough to pay the cover charge

Try eating at Subway, darling
Try shopping at K-mart, hon
Save money at Subway, darling
Petula’s back
You know you wanna go
Get in the black
You’ll have the dough and have fun

(repeat chorus)

LOL!

I think my cruise was one of the last before they started including bottled water, soda, juices for free, which would have been nice to have.  Other than that, the food was wonderful (the specialty restaurants were included in the price) and they were really great.  The service was first-class form the housekeeping, to the waiters by the pool, to the servers in the buffet.  I never came across any snooty behavior which I have found on many cruises.  I would love to go on one of the two new ships (the Marina and the Rivera), because the decor looks wonderful.  I would highly recommend Oceania.  The only negative is that they still require (voluntary) gratuities.

I just pulled out all the albums I did in 1995 or at least that carry that copyright (I'm sure I did a couple of these at the end of 1994 but I'm equally sure that some of the early 1996 titles will be from 1995.  I'm not going to be nutty about chronology anymore simply because it will not be possible being that there were nineteen albums that year and I was literally in the studio recording every two-and-a-half weeks.  To try and figure out the exact order would be madness.  I can figure out some of it by going to amazon and looking at the CD release dates, because our normal procedure was to put things out within six weeks of their being finished.

Maybe the fact tips aren't included in the fees upfront is why the service is so good-motivation. ;)

The two specialty restaurants on our cruise were included in the price.  Reservations were needed for dinner.  We ate breakfast & lunch at them & stayed with the main dining room for dinner.  The specialty restaurants basically had the same menu every night & Keith wasn't thrilled with the vegetarian options on them.  I also was happy to stay with the main dining room.

One day we hope to take an Oceania cruise.  For our next trip I would like to stay on land.

Jane, you probably posted this, but what cruiseline were you on?  I have 4 weeks of vacation this year, and I'm wondering if maybe Betsy and I should abandon the kids and go on one.  :)

Paul Gauguin.

The first cruise I would suggest is an Alaskan cruise.  Fly to Alaska, tour to Danali Park, take the train to Anchorage & cruise down to Seattle.  I personally would recommend Princess over Holland America.  I don't know about the other lines that go there.  I bet DR TCB does.

Jane, the Regatta is the twin of the ship I sailed on in Italy.  They are both part of Ocenia Cruises.  If you check out their web site, remember that the prices include round-trip air.

As did this cruise.  I believe your cruise was also all inclusive?  What did you think of the service, food, comfort, and appearance of your ship?

Jane/TCB

We Went On The NAUTICA which is The Sister Ship. The Cruise Was Great

Those Oceania cruises look great!

Mine was the best of the ten cruises I have taken over the years.

I will say that if I have a complaint about Oceania (and many would not consider a bad thing), is that I love the days onborad ship when we are at sea.  I find them totally relaxing because you have absolutely nothing that has to be done the whole day.  Oceania is very port oriented.  If you are on a ten day cruise, normally you will be in a different (or sometimes ) the same port every single day. They do a lot of overnight stays in ports, as well.  We did a two-day stop in Monte CArlo.  I missed having, at least, one day at sea.

DR Jane - it was a thrill to see those familiar Rockwell images in their original forms.  The exhibit of the Four Freedoms was very effective - next to each poster was a blank space with headings like "Tell Us What 'Freedom from Want' Means to You."  There was a stack of Post-It notes on which museum goers could write their responses and those were very interesting to read.

The last segment of the exhibit is a room with all 323 of Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers framed and hung in chronological order.  It was fun to pick out the covers for issues closest to significant dates like birthdays and anniversaries.  It was also interesting to see the names of some of the famous authors who wrote for the magazine - P. G. Wodehouse, Edith Wharton, Sinclair Lewis, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc.  My favorite cover was June 27, 1925 - a woman reading in a wing-back chair.

I like as few days at sea as possible.  I did enjoy the first day out at sea, to rest up & adjust to the time change, on our Baltic cruise.  I could have used another one after our exhausting but incredible two days in Saint Petersburg.

DR JMK our Baltic cruise was romantic, but then it was for our 40th anniversary.

Jane, I don't know how I missed the posts about Sherlock.  I am glad he is doing better.

Thank you.  How are you doing?  Did you have any appointments while I was away?

Ah yes!  I had a electro analysis test with a doctor who told me I would be a complete invalid for life.  Him, I didn't like.  Then I had my two MRIs, which turned out to be a piece of cake thanks to a very cool Technician.  However, the next day, I got a call from my surgeon's office telling me that my surgeon had reviewed the results and was turning me over to a different surgeon in his office.   The reason given was that the problem appears to be in the thoracic part of my spine, and my surgeon doesn't deal with that part of the spine.  I see this new sureon tomorrow.

You obviously have a stronger stomach than I do.  I would not want to do a major crossing.  Had this cruise been my first one I expect I would have been rather sea sick like the poor woman at the table next to us who suddenly bolted out with her husband behind her.  He returned explaining she was ill & requested dinner be sent to their cabin.  Why we seemed to leave during the beginning of dinner all the time I don't know.  The first morning was the most difficult.  After I brushed my teeth I went right back to bed & stayed there until the ship anchored.  I was fine as long as I stayed on the bed.  I even exercised & ate a small breakfast while Keith ate at the table.

It looks very nice.  I think I would miss a balcony now that I'm spoiled, not that we used the small balcony on this last cruise.  On the big ships we used the balconies a lot.

Hope it works better than "Nine."

Well, a lot of it will have to be rewritten, particularly the opening.  And actually, it already has--there are demos out on YouTube of a few new songs Sondheim wrote.  I think DR Jose posted links to them a while back...

I tried a patch when it first came out & the patch made me sick.  I saw a number of people wearing them on this trip & might check them out again.  I thought you need to wear one before you get sick.  Someone also told me if you take a Bonine at night it stays with you the next day.  I was always fine at bedtime so I didn't try that theory.

No wonder I thought you were based out of New York.

One thing I preferred on a small ship compared to a large one was the ease of getting on and off the ship.  On a big ship crowds are the norm where the small ship was rather fast.  On this cruise we always tendered (took a small boat) to land which probably made the entire process equally as long, however, the views of the islands were nicer than standing in line.

Don't ask me why, but I collected Saturday Evening Posts back when I was circa 10-13, when we lived in Seattle.  This was obviously in the days long before the internet and there was some sort of national newspaper called The Antique Trader or something like that that my Mom subscribed to for her Jim Beam bottle collection (that's another story for another day. :) ).  I got a lot from that newspaper as well as some from the Pike Place Market.  I have them going back to the 19th century.

Color Me Amazed Department:  I got an advance copy of FRIDA to review, a film I'd never seen.  Taymor is an exceptionally brilliant director from a visual perspective, there's simply no arguing the point.  I thought so with ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and I'm even more convinced of it now.

I want to go back to Tahiti.  With the warm humid air, along with no house chores to do, I barely felt a twinge in my right shoulder & no pain anywhere else.  I was hoping once we were home the pain in my left shoulder would be greatly improved.  No such luck.  Last night I lifted a very large novel to read & something in my right shoulder cracked.  Now it is worst than it has been for at least 6 months.

DR JMK, your "starting over" song has a whole different meaning for me. ;D

Speaking of the big book I think I'll start reading it now and see if I can manage it.  I'm very bored with THE CAT'S TABLE I'm reading on the Nook.

Never saw Frida. Is it worth it beyond the visuals?

Thought the visuals of "Titus" were great, too, although I loved a lot of it because I had been to that coliseum in Croatia.

BK, I just pulled out my copy of "Duke Ellington's Timon of Athens," which you produced for Varese in 1993 (at least according to the back label. Is that one of the recordings you'll feature in the book?

DR Cilla it probably would have helped to have seen the first Holmes flick before the 2nd one to appreciate it more.  I enjoyed it much more than Mission Impossible & I wasn't feeling well when we watched Holmes.  I would tell anyone that if they didn't like the first Homes movie or are Sherlock purist not to see these films.

Oh I"m not a purist and there were parts I really enjoyed, I just don't think it's my cup of tea

As for On A Clear Day You Can See Forever:

I liked it. It wasn't as atrocious or offensive as some people have made it out to be. I kept thinking that it would have been best to call it something else, with the subtitle of "Based on On A Clear Day.... Maybe that would have helped alleviate some of the baggage - the good and the bad - associated with the original production and the movie. The heightened 60's decor and costumes didn't bother me much either.

Jessie Mueller really does deserve all the praise she has been getting, and David Turner is pretty good too. Harry Connick, Jr. was good, but just so not in his element, and the way the new book is structured, it doesn't play to his particular acting strengths.

For me, the true unsung heroes of the evening are Lawrence Yurman and Doug Besterman who did the arrangements and orchestrations. The vocal arrangements and charts are amazing. In fact, just an evening and/or album of songs titled "Lane and Lerner Revisited" featuring these arrangements and cast would make for quite a nice listen.

I did have to wonder just how long and just how they're going to try to keep the show running till the end of Connick's contract period. We got freebies tonight via a friend in the show, and ended up with second row center in the mezzanine. -And only the first five rows of the mezzanine were semi-full.

DR JMK - As for a cruise... If you don't want to or can't abandon the kids, a Disney Cruise may be the way to go. With they way they structure the activities on board for the 18 and under set, you could literally not see your children from 8:00am to 10:00pm. Each time I've taken one, it still surprises me just how many children I don't see while I'm on board.

A propos nothing other than having heard a great Manfredo Fest cover version of one of the themes today, BK would you ever consider releasing the Artie Butler score to THE LOVE MACHINE?  Two fantastic Dionne Warwick vocals.

Of course I would - I just released his People In The Picture and I love him.

After twenty-two pages of book, and two sets of liner notes, you might imagine that I'm not chomping at the bit to now write the notes - but I shall, Blanche, I shall.

I can't find DOWNTOWN ABBY / UPTOWN ANN LANDERS on YouTube, DR FJL.  Do you have a link?

Oh, in honor of 40 views, I'd moved it to "UNLISTED by popular demand"  :)  but here's the link, bless you for asking.
I think it's a very rarefied joke, perhaps - yeah, that must be it, it's rarefied.

Just had to share. :)

Tonight, we had our first (rough) blocking rehearsal for "A Bucket of Blood."  We actually got all the way through act one...it was quick and basic stuff, but we got through it.  We then were able to go about half way through the first act again before it was time to leave.  Tomorrow night, we will do the rough blocking for act two, but we'll be in the space.  That'll be fun.

Weather is pleasant here, 46 degrees currently with lots of sunshine but next week we are supposed to begin Winter weather with temps in the 30s and in the 20s overnight.

They say there is a chance we may get a little snow on Sunday or Monday.

It's been quite frosty in the mornings and evenings for the last couple of days.

Rob Marshall in talks to direct "Into the Woods."

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/rob-marshall-takes-sondheims-woods-279821

Hope it works better than "Nine."

I just don't see INTO THE WOODS working as a movie.  A very, very, very long movie.

Maybe they'll split it into two movies (like Harry Potter 7 and The Hobbit)!

Coming this December, "Into the Woods: Act One!"  Coming next year, "Into the Woods: Act Two!"

;D

And this is why you should turn your cellphone off at a concert: http://mkitch.tumblr.com/post/15661821971

The New York Times just posted their blurb about, but I like this guy's "tone".

The phone's owner is just lucky Ms. LuPone was not performing that night.

:o That's exactly what I was thinking!
