TOD

Broadway musicals first:

"1776" is my number one, no question.  I used to like "Jesus Christ Superstar", with a few qualifications, but have no idea how I'd feel about it now.  I always wanted to like the "Fiddler on the Roof" film more than I actually ended up liking it (this one needs to be revisited at a time when I'm in just the right mood for it).  I do like "Hair" more than I used to.  Believe it or not, I've never seen "Little Shop".

I dunno, it's tough.  Whatever their various flaws, the filmed musicals of the '50s/'60s are the ones that ring my bell, now and forever.

Original Disney stuff, etc., no problem:

Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The Lion King
Beauty and the Beast
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Little Mermaid

South Park:  Bigger Longer & Uncut

The number felt so fresh when I first heard it in that theater on 3rd Avenue and 57th Street in the Bloomingdales area, as fresh as... well, I actually liked the whole experience, as silly as the whole thing was, i really did, i'm not going to make too much fun.

Had a haircut & style and scheduled a perm for Nov. 16, timing it so that I can have it cut once before our trip to England.  I've had lunch and put together one of Richard's favorite dinners - chicken & rice.  I guess it's a casserole, but the meat isn't chopped up and mixed in.  It's a rice mixture with boneless chicken breasts on top.  I'll put it in the oven about 4 and we'll eat when the Michigan/Illinois game is over.

I think everyone is at the Ashland Y.  It sure was packed today.  We couldn't even park in their lot and had to go across the street to the Albertson's lot, which was ok & as we passed the Redbox we used a free promotion code to get a movie.

Last week the pool only had three swimmers.  This week the double lanes each had three people when I became a fourth.  I was standing in the shallow end talking to someone when I saw the person in the single lane begin to exit.  Boy did I scoot quickly through the middle lane to the single lane.  It is so much easier to swim when I don't have to worry about someone crashing into me.

Just before I did my last lap I mentioned to the guy in the lane next to me I would be getting out.  He slipped into my lane and waited for me.  He has an injured shoulder which was doing better until someone ran into him.  He was very happy to take my single lane.

I suggest we don't go this route and that we get a frenzy or three going on because I'm going to have to be doing some major stuff for the site, which includes redesigning, moving everything to a new web host and finally bringing this all up to date, because this site is always in constant danger of imploding due to the antiquated and ancient software used to create it in 2001.  It doesn't help that the gentleman who did the creating won't talk about this at all - he has washed his hands of it, so we're on our own in doing this, which is daunting and scary.  We're having to find a web person who can actually figure out how to save all our archives for the notes and discussion board - then we need to basically clone the site, move it to our new web host, and then we can start getting everything into the new version.  And when I see not even two full pages of posts at three o'clock California time, I just have to ask myself do I want to go through all that, just so everyone can go live on Facebook and not come here as much.  Former dear reader Sandra lives on Facebook now and makes amusing posts that, I have to tell you, three people see, instead of doing them here for people who really like her.  I don't get it, frankly.  But that's Facebook - everyone thinks that millions of people are seeing their stuff, but the way it works now, I think anyone with a brain knows that's not the case.  And that is how I am feeling at this time.

Nastiest time of my life, perhaps. I slept 36 one weekend and had the worst headache for what little time I was awake. My staff told me if I ever went back on caffeine, they would quit. I apparently was not the charming self that I am otherwise. Or at least that I think I am.

Shredded cheddar should work fine for the cheese, the finer or fancy shred is better.

They use kidney beans, as I recall. I really don't like beans in chili, so IMHO it ain't necessary. (I felt at home when I moved to Texas and discovered that real Texans don't put beans in their chili, either.)

Spaghetti is plain, just drained. I prefer the angel hair or thin, but i know you can use any kind of spaghetti you like.

The hot sauce is something I can't really remember. I know it's not really hot, but it adds to the overall dish.

I bought a new book for my Kindle today.  I have never heard of the book, I have never heard of the author, and I have read no reviews about it.  Still the name of the book was RETIREMENT CAN BE MURDER, so I figured it would appeal to me.

Today would have been my dear mother in-law's 91st birthday.

Good memories to you Jane.  And to Keith.

{{{Hugs}}}

Thank you.  I have very good memories.  I was lucky to have a 2nd mother.

About a week or so ago, I asked if anyone could help me with making this 5 Way dinner.  I bought the Cincinnati Chili, but I don't know what kind of cheese to use, what kind of beans to use, and I don't know if just use the spaghetti plain, or with butter, or with cheese, or what.  The onion I can figure out myself.

Anyone?

Shredded cheddar should work fine for the cheese, the finer or fancy shred is better.

They use kidney beans, as I recall. I really don't like beans in chili, so IMHO it ain't necessary. (I felt at home when I moved to Texas and discovered that real Texans don't put beans in their chili, either.)

Spaghetti is plain, just drained. I prefer the angel hair or thin, but i know you can use any kind of spaghetti you like.

The hot sauce is something I can't really remember. I know it's not really hot, but it adds to the overall dish.

Thank you, John.

I was going to post on Facebook that I was going to have a 5 Way this weekend, but decided against it.

Or, as they sing in "Ballroom," "Five's a popular indoor sport."

Uploading six of the seven mixes from last night, although I already know that I'm raising the volume of the strings on the first half of one song, so I mentioned that when I sent it.  I didn't send the seventh because my reliable memory kicked in while I was listening to it - I struggled with it last night and it still isn't to my liking, but I suddenly remembered that I had Lanny do a Hammond organ pass on one song - well, we have never heard that and this is the only song that makes sense, so I asked the engineer to go do some sleuthing and find it.  The tracks were not well labeled in NY and that's been a struggle, too.  Once we have that track added into that mix, it will give it what it's missing.

DR TCB, my memory is cloudy but I believe you put the hot dog inside a bun and top it with the chili and cheese. The spaghetti, chili and cheese are a separate entity.

Second, I go either way with beans.  With or without.  Doesn't matter.  I like it all.

For the rest:

The finest shred of cheddar you can manage.  And dice the onions pretty small.  If you like a hot sauce on the order of Tabasco, go for it.  The ones on the table in Skyline and Gold Star might not be that hot, but hey.

Third, a Mac & Cheese cookoff sounds like heaven.

Except for that one you pictured.  That's so typical of how people can ruin a comfort dish by trying to get fancy with it.

I have to credit BK's many mentions of it with getting me on a Mac & Cheese kick lately.  It was disappointing that last time at Joe Allen when they didn't have it, because the previous time it had looked so good.

It wasn't the winner. I don't have a good picture of that one. It had shishisto peppers, which are only mildly hot, but they had been smoked and matched with a smoky gouda. Quite nice.

One tasted like a casserole, where meat dominated the flavor. Another tasted dry, but with bacon. Another tasted watery, but with bacon. Then there was one with duck confit and spinach. It was good but it wasn't  mac and cheese.

Is only 1 swimmer allowed in the single lane? Why would someone crash into you in the double lane? Do you mean pass you from behind? I'm assuming you mean hit you in the opposite direction? That could never happen at our pool because you always go up and down on the right side.

Speaking of pools being full on Saturdays. Our pool was packed. But I don't even know what time they allow people to swim. The mornings are full of lessons.  They have bleachers. Today I saw for 2 hours while my niece had her sychro lesson. It wasn't too bad. I had my kindle and a book. And I was pretty much able to read. Even though it was loud it wasn't talking. Just music and an overall loud buzz. But boy was the place packed.

Yes, only one swimmer in the single lane :)  It is almost half the size of the double lane.

Some swimmers can't seem to swim in a straight line and completely cross over the the swimmer on the "right side" opposite them.  I can't tell you how many times I have hugged the rope to avoid getting hit.  Then there are the fast swimmers, or at least fast at turning around when they get to the wall.  They don't seem to look if someone else in front of them is making the turn to go back.  They cross in front of me even though I'm on the right side & they are still on on left.

Fifth (and I think this brings me up to date):

I didn't like the Cabaret film back in the day because all I'd expected and wanted was some representation of the stage musical.  I shall have to return to it eventually with a more mature pair of eyes.

DR ChasSmith, I also disliked the movie for the same reason.  Then I read I AM A CAMERA and discovered that the movie is truer to the written story than the stage version.

Then Fosse should have called his film, I AM A CAMERA.

Well, BK, I apologize, but I had to take my pain medication, and now I need to turn off the computer.

Off the top of my head -

Gypsy (I know, I know, Bette Midler isn't everyone's cup o' tea for Mama Rose, but I loved her)
Annie (1982 version)
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin
A Little Mermaid
Newsies

In other words, pretty much anything Alan Menken and Howard Ashman did together

Hmm, I'm being compared to an animated rodent.  Ah well, I've been compared to worse.

And, I suppose I should confess, I really liked the film version of Rent.  Yes, the actors were too old, but I don't care, I still liked it.

That did look very good.

Today, I went to work for a couple of hours, then ushered for the Masterworks Choral Ensemble (http://www.mce.org/).  They were quite good.  I rarely see/usher for them, so I forget that I know several people in the group.  I didn't see them after the show, so I didn't get to chat with them.  Oh, well...maybe next time (almost a Cabaret reference ;)).
