Well, you've read the notes, the notes were protective, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're lucky to have their own protective MOOS.

TOD: I loved reading the Sherlock Holmes mysteries when I was a kid. I wonder if I would still like them now? Anyway, "A Study in Scarlet" was my favorite of the series. I also loved the Basil Rathbone film series, except for the one where they went to Washington. And I'm really enjoying the new Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch.

I've discussed the book with two close friends and I've got a clearer picture of things now - really helps to talk it out.  I'm going to make some small character tweaks that probably won't even involve a total of ten or fifteen lines and that will be it.  I will decide on how long to sit on it - it wouldn't be out before May anyway, and I might just wait until September, but I feel I've discussed the little issue this book might have in terms of the one character and I feel that with the tweaks I'm going to be fine with it.  I think the book tells an interesting story and there's a good lesson in there and that's very important to me.

Good idea to discuss it with others. I would make the changes and then maybe have someone else read it other than Margaret.  The only reason i suggest this is because sometimes it is easier for someone to read the thing for themselves vs you trying to explain the thing that might upset people.

Good morning, all!

Either I got to bed too late or I took the sleeping pill too late because the body did not want to leave my bed this morning. I'm usually in bed by 10pm, but last night it was closer to midnight, and I'm rather out of joint about it. So, I believe I will stay inside this morning and work on my taxes.  Toyland can wait till tomorrow.

More coffee!

The only Sherlock Holmes story I have read is THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.....and I enjoy ALL of the versions of that movie.

And I do think that Basil Rathbone was the best movie Sherlock.

I have never seen a Sherlock Holmes play.

I think I may do the laundry this afternoon so I can spend tomorrow and Saturday at Toyland.

I thought that Peter Cushng resembled most my vision of Sherlock Holmes, but i've also liked the Jeremy Brett series, and Ian Richardson, whom I've admired since MARAT/SADE. It was a pleasure working with him and Ia Mackellan in 2001 on BABES IN TOYLAND. I'm happy that I got a chance to tell Richardson what a wonderful Henry Higgins he was in the 1976 revival of MY FAIR LADY.

TOD:

Many years ago I read all the Holmes stories and greatly enjoyed most of them, but a couple of favorites were the ones that take place in the U.S. -- the Gold Rush one and isn't there one around Salt Lake City?  Oy!  You can see how much of it I've retained over the years.  It's a little embarrassing.  I have one of those big annotated sets and every time I glance at it I vow to reread them all.

As far as films go, I'm even more delinquent.  There are many I haven't seen.  With such scant experience in these matters, I'll fall back on Rathbone as my standard Holmes, but definitely Cushing, too, in BASKERVILLES.

TOD:

Fav Sherlock film:  my own 1983 version of HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES with Ian Richardson, which Leonard Maltin called: "The best version of the Doyle classic to date."

Fav Sherlock play:  my own THE EBONY APE...followed a close second by CRUCIFER OF BLOOD

Fav Sherlock story: probably HOUND, though I also like SIGN OF FOUR (which I also adpated with Richardson as Holmes), and VALLEY OF FEAR.

Fav Sherlock actor:  Jeremy Brett, because he was the truest to the character and not afraid to make Holmes thoroughly disagreeable and waspish, as he could often people.

Fav re-invention of Sherlock:  SHERLOCK TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch.  Remarkably faithful in tone and spirit to Doyle.

Unlikely, they'll find the missing bits and I'm not sure that it would be an improvement.  There is a dvd that has tried to re-assemble the missing bits with photos and soundtrack dialogue.  Having watched it, I'm just not sure that it all doesn't just distract from the main story.  Still there is much to like in this uneven film...AND MIKLOS ROZSA SCORE IS CERTAINLY THE BEST SHERLOCK MOVIE SCORE EVER and one of the best movie scores, period.

Good morning, all!

Back at work.  Survived yesterday.

Sleep is problematic as I'm having sweats.

I can sleep, but I wake up when the sweats turn cold.   I'm blaming the antibiotics I'm taking twice a day for spurring my body toward a feverish state during the night, but I have to get up, put my pillow into the dryer, change my shirt and generally "wake up" until I can comfortably return to bed.   I did this three times last night.  It's getting old.

Otherwise, I'm feeling better as it turns out.

Looking forward to the weekend!!!

Sleep studies have likely progressed from when you father had one. You should see a doctor about it, rather than continue to suffer. It might not be Sleep Apnea, but some other sleep problem that can be corrected.

I diligently went to bed relatively early last night, only to be awakened at 5 am by a drip, drip, drip. It was raining and sometimes the eaves drip, but this sounded suspiciously like it was coming from the kitchen, so I got up and checked it out. Yup. A leak in the ceiling. We were lucky the roofer was willing to come out right away and he has now come and gone. No drip, drip, drip. I truly hope it stays that way.

DR MBarnum, do the sleep docs deal with leaky ceilings or noisy neighbors? If so, I'd like to see one myself!

The writing on Elementary is great.  Give it a chance

I watch it sometimes, DR Matthew.

I am looking for a nice MP3 player with a touchscreen.....not an IPOD.....but nothing gets very good reviews, and I don't want a piece of junk.....so the search continues.

Do you have something against an iPod?

Nothing except the PRICE...can't afford it...  And I really don't need game apps.....

Obviously if we weren't Sherlock Holmes fans we would not have named our dog after him.  Since his official name was SILVER BLAZE we have a fondness for the story.

When we were first married it seemed every Sunday afternoon a different Basil Rathbone Holmes movie was on.  It was then, watching with Keith, that I became a fan & began reading the novels.  I have the complete works on my Nook and read a bit here and there in-between other novels.

DR Jane, you really ought to go and see a sleep specialist, I know I am glad I did. I can't begin to describe how much better I feel now that I have been treating the sleep apnea for just a little over 1 year now.

Along with feeling more awake, energetic, and productive. my blood sugars are now in the normal range, my Cholesterol is improved, and I don't get lost when I drive (as much, anyhow).

Keith swears I do not stop breathing at night.  He has watched to see.

My entire family has sleep problems.  My father did a sleep study and was fine.  Maybe my next visit to the doctor I will discuss this.  I'm glad you are doing so well.

Sleep studies have likely progressed from when you father had one. You should see a doctor about it, rather than continue to suffer. It might not be Sleep Apnea, but some other sleep problem that can be corrected.

Wow, now I sound just like DR Jane! LOL!

LOL and I have talked to a doctor about it.  That was when it was suggested Keith watch me sleep for signs of apnea.  I have a new doctor now so maybe her approach will be different.  The thought of driving to Medford at night to have people watch me is very unappealing.  Do they let you read if that is your normal method of falling to sleep or would I have to lie there for hours waiting to fall asleep?

I like that your favorite film is your own.  I would like to see this again.  If you should happen to know it will be on tv please let us know.

The 1962 Bollywood film BEES SAAL BAAD is a  version of HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES...and a good, spooky one also. No Sherlock Holmes in it, but there is a police detective character.

You can watch it with subtitles here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jqgY6odgLc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jqgY6odgLc)

Of course, if you don't want to watch the entire movie (although I don't know why you wouldn't), just watch the first couple of minutes...very vintage 1930s Universal-like atmosphere going on there!

It is a half hour drive, mostly on the freeway.  At least our freeways aren't overly busy.

I wanted to look at the books to know what I was getting & then have them gift wrapped in birthday paper.  I'll put them in a priority envelope tomorrow & mail them along with the cute birthday card I found.  My shipping cost won't be much more than the sales tax in California.  Oregon doesn't have a sales tax.

What a busy little day this has been.  Had a nice chat with Juliana about her show, which she felt went well but not as well as The Federal, mainly due to it being such a different kind of venue - had I been able to go up there with her, I could have made some adjustments and helped her, but alas, I could not, all due to the outrageous air fares to Oakland.  Terrible.  I'd had my sandwich and no fries prior to that, so then I picked up one package and came back home.  Then my pal David Wechter came by and we had a nice chat, and then Shelly Markham came (he's the musical director for the singer) and brought a surprise visitor with him - my friend Gene Castle.  We all had the best time yakking - David hadn't met either Shelly or Gene so he had fun, too.  Then the singer arrived and we still yakked on.  Then David and Gene left and we began work, which more about in the notes.

Chip Esten was supposed to be on this tour, but he's now going by the name of Charles Esten and is on a little show called "Nashville (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2281375/)" with Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere.

Until later!

It was a great show and an almost full audience...over 800 tickets pre-sold.  A good time was had by all. :D
