Well, you've read the notes, the notes were merry and written in May, and now it is time for you to post until the merry May cows come home.

This morning I am going to the library with my sister to check out some periodicals - I am assuming we can find names in the indexes and issues of newspapers we want to see.  Time will tell.

I also have to get a new card as I seem to have lost mine.

The theater wasn't budgeted for the full complement of musicians (five or six, if I recall?), so we went with yrs truly on piano, one violin, and one person doubling on guitar and bass...which worked okay.  Actually, it worked fine, and (who's reading this?) was much more presentable than the two singer/actors who screeched their way throughout the proceedings.

T.O.Y.

I would have to say either an actual artifact from the Titanic (other than the coal which I already have).  If not, then a First Edition of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER hopefully signed by Walter Lord.  I have a leather bound edition signed by the author, but I would love to have a First Edition.

Good morning, all!  I slept quite poorly last night, and I slept in. I must shortly head down to Toyland.

Last night I saw a concert performance of THE SONG OF NORWAY at Carnegie Hall. Ifind this operetta by two writers I liked enormously, Wright & Forrest plus an assist from Edvard Grieg, a strange mix of witty lyrics, lovely music and one of the stupidest, emptiest and more than usually idiotic librettos ever written. The concert was nicely done with two really wonderful and outrageous performances from Judy Kaye as diva Luisa Giovanni and David Garrison as her husband Pepi LeLoop that caught all of the dizziness at operetta when it's performed with style and a sense of humor over the plot's madness.

The rest of the cast was good: Santino Fontana was a wonderful Edvard Grieg; I hadn't heard hm since for some time and he's a wonderful baritone; Jason Danieley was a good Rikaard, but I think his beautiful tenor has sung too much pop, and I longed for a solid operatic tenor in the role; Alexandra Silber of THE WOMAN IN WHITE was the ingenue Nina, and Iliked her for the msot part:  I kept switching back and forth from yea to nay; she was great until she forced the top. Anita Gillette replaced Marni Nixon for the performance as Mother Grieg, but neither lady had the right voice for the role, which calls for a solid, plummy contralto sound and Ted Sperling miscast it. Anita was charming but the wrong voice. Then, because there's so much dance music, we had five ballet students occasionally prancing about to be a ballet troupe or happy villagers, and that added a bit more camp to the proceedings. Overall, though, the singing wasgood, and thechorus and orchestra in fine fettle. I had a good time.

I've always wondered what SONG OF NORWAY really is all about, and how it plays.  I've never seen any incarnation of it and I'm not even sure I've heard any of the soundtrack from the old film version.   It sounds like last night was a wonderful opportunity to get to know it.

Yesterday, I signed up for Netflix.  At least, I'm going to do the free trial for a month.

Our local Blockbuster closed a few weeks ago, so yesterday I went over to the next closest one (7 miles away), only to find that they have raised their rates to almost double what they were before.

So, I said "Screw it!" and left.

I should have my first 2 DVDs from Netflix by the end of this week.

Well the news is mixed from the vet.  He couldn't find any place in particular where she had been injured.  He said it was possible that she got a little puncture from a claw and it's infected under the skin, so he's giving her antibiotics, but....if they don't work then there's a chance that she could have cancer. If that's what it is, he said it may be a very aggressive form that doesn't show up on the xrays right away and when it does show up the bone is basically gone.   I'm not panicking.  The first time a vet told me Callie may have cancer she was 2 1/2 years old.  She'll be 11 years old in June.  She has really high calcium levels in her blood and always has had.  So that's what they've based that idea on in the past.   I'm going to give her the antibiotics and hope for the best.

She didn't enjoy the snow this morning.

DR JRand, maybe your library is like many of the public libraries in Oregon...although taxes support  them, it is only by a thread. Our libraries get shuttered every now and then. I think all of Jackson County's libraries closed down for a year or so...DR Jane will remember the exact amount of time.

For a book loving state, our library system has never been well supported by those in charge of such things.

Most of the titles on Netflix streaming are temporary. The company has agreements to show the titles for a certain amount of years, so it is always a good idea to look for the expiration date when you add a film to your streaming queue.

This week they are suppose to be adding around 500 titles.

I went on my bike around the lake twice this week. I am going to try to go everyday (although probably won't end up doing it). But I need the exercise.

The lake is interesting this time of year. The trees are all bare. So it's not very visually appealing. But the lake part and ducks are nice. And the no cars part is nice too.

Does your library carry new movies?

This is how I watch all of my movies (from the library). They seem to get most new ones. And you can request what you want. We get them for 3 days (or 1 week if it is based on a real person). We have 2 days to pick them up. And there is a $2/day fine for every day it is overdue.

I don't remember how long it lasted & it wasn't until they re-opened that I began using the library on a regular basis. We still have reduced hours.  Awhile ago I read threats of possible closures again but haven't seen anymore on the subject.

During the stretch our Ashland library was closed many businesses set up book stations.  When I went to my hairdresser's I would leave a paperback & pick up a new one to read.

This is how I watch all of my movies (from the library). They seem to get most new ones. And you can request what you want. We get them for 3 days (or 1 week if it is based on a real person). We have 2 days to pick them up. And there is a $2/day fine for every day it is overdue.

I always find it interesting how different that different libraries are...for instance, we have feature films, documentaries and TV series.  The TV series (which can have 10 discs or more) can be checked out for up to three weeks, and most feature films have a seven-day due date.  We also only have a 15¢/day fine.  Patrons can accrue up to $10 in fines and still not be blocked from checking out materials.  If, however, they go over $10, then they're cut off until they pay.

My question for ASK BK DAY:

You mentioned awhile ago that you were thinking about getting representation again for acting....did you get a new agent?

I do have a new agent, but we haven't discussed the acting part yet - just the directing.

How far will you travel to see a show?

These days not far.  In the old days, far.

I managed to sleep until ten, when the phone rang - so I got eight hours.  It was the publisher again, just letting me know the book was at the printers.  BTW, it's funny to watch all these authors who know about my books migrating to Author House, the latest being Carl Reiner.

No cars has to make it a great ride ;)

I saw a few tv series.  In fact, the DVD on hold for me is John Le Carré's Smiley's People.  It says the DVD will be held for 12 days.  Now to find out how many I can keep it.

The city/suburb I live in has a lot of bike paths. So I can do a whole bike ride only on bike paths. There are just a few places that I have to cross (but it is from one bike path to the other side of the bike path.

I do like the lake because it's more peaceful and not windy. The other day when I went it was very windy on the way back. So I had to re-route myself back thru the lake. That added 10 minutes. And so it was 45 minutes for my first bike ride of the season. I was tired.

DR Jane 12 days would seem crazy to me if someone else wanted it. But I think you said before that your library holds books for a long time too. My library only holds books for 2 days also. I think that is totally fair since there are others waiting. And our library is only for our suburb. So basically everybody would live within 10 minute drive.

Right, where many of our library users don't always get into town every day.  I know I don't.  Plus the odd hours sometimes make it difficult to get there when they are open.  They don't open until noon on Thursday & Saturday and are closed on Friday.  For some reason I tend to want to go on Fridays.

She has the funniest mad face.   Anyway, she's resting comfortably.  Between the weather, worrying about her and not getting a lot of sleep, I'm not feeling so hot.  Oh, I haven't had any caffine today.  Maybe I'll make some ice tea.

I hope Callie is okay!

I've been going through hell booking an August flight to Dublin. Oy!

But how many copies of a particular title does your library have?  It's a stand-alone, right?  We're a 27-branch system, so three selectors buy for the whole district.  And we have what's called a floating or shared collection, meaning if someone at the Tumwater branch checks out a title and returns it to the Aberdeen (or any other) branch, it stays at the branch where it was returned.  It doesn't get sent back to Tumwater.  That has cut WAY down on having to move the items back and forth and back and forth.

Durbin didn't die today. She died a few days ago. It was just announced today. Partial obit from the Times:

"Deanna Durbin, who as a plucky child movie star with a sweet soprano voice charmed American audiences during the Depression and saved Universal Pictures from bankruptcy before she vanished from public view 64 years ago, has died, a fan club announced on Tuesday. She was 91.

In a newsletter, the Deanna Durbin Society said Ms. Durbin died “a few days ago,” quoting her son, Peter H. David, who thanked her admirers for respecting her privacy. No other details were given.

Ms. Durbin had remained determinedly out of public view since 1949, when she retired to a village in France with her third husband."

There are 15 libraries in Jackson County.  The other DVD I requested is being shipped from another branch.  As far as I can tell returns stay where they are returned until requested elsewhere.  When I look something up it tells me how many copies there are and where it is.

Interestingly for the eBooks, which I have been told are all of Oregon, there might be a footnote saying some branches get the book faster.  When I've noted that the book has gotten to me much faster than other books with a shorter queue.  I don't know if Ashland has requested or paid for extra eBooks for this benefit.

We can't renew e-books, either, but we can just put on another hold and get it again...AND if we don't link our reader to "the cloud" or whatever, the book will actually stay on the device and is readable until we do.  It's one way to work the system.

Not linking is best.  I've come close to using that method but so far finished in time.  Putting another hold on a book when I might have to wait ages doesn't appeal to me.

I think we can renew dvds online if nobody else has them reserved (but most movies are reserved).

If you take out a book on may 1st and you decide to renew it on may 15th. Shouldn't it renew it from the date you renewed it (may 15th)? That is how my library works.  Although I think my sister's might work the way you said. If she takes out a book on may 1st and renews it on may 15th then she gets 3 weeks + 3 weeks from may 1st (books are for 3 weeks). I think it's much more fair the way my library works. IF nobody has her book reserved she could potentially renew it the day she takes it out for 6 weeks..

I went to our local library a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to find not only a goodly number of films on Blu-ray, but a quite respectable number of Criterions in both DVD and Blu-ray.  Looked at a few because I was curious to see how people have been treating them, and -- woops -- found the booklets missing in several.  (A few of the more recent releases had "INCLUDES BOOKLET" stamped on the outside, and those were all there!)  Anyhoo, for a not-too-large movie and TV department, the quality of selection was way more interesting than expected.

I think it's safe to say that Mr. Brown will never be a part of Kritzerland, whether show or recording.  The closest we got was when I did the Q&A with him for the alumni association at LACC.

This does not surprise me. ::)

Just watched and greatly enjoyed FUNNY GIRL on Blu-ray.

Okay, so here's a question for BK or anyone else who can jump in:

I've never seen a stage production of FUNNY GIRL.  How does it stand up these days, particularly in the shadow of the film?  Do people do it?  Is it performed basically unaltered?

I just put the album in the To Play stack near the turntable so it will get listened to sometime soon.  I can't even remember when I heard it last.

I just heard this morning that as of last night, Netflix lost about 2000 movies.  Doing a quick search, I found THIS (http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/trending/You-lost-1800-titles-from-your-Netflix-purge-streaming-account-today.html) little article about it. :P

I'm renting the DVDs, not streaming.

Yesterday, I signed up for Netflix.

For the first time I reserved two DVD's from the library.  One came in today.  I have no idea how many days I have to pick it up, or to keep it once I check it out.  I also need to find my library card.

Does your library carry new movies?

This is how I watch all of my movies (from the library). They seem to get most new ones. And you can request what you want. We get them for 3 days (or 1 week if it is based on a real person). We have 2 days to pick them up. And there is a $2/day fine for every day it is overdue.

Some but I will get those in BlueRay from Red Box when I can.  I don't think the library has BlueRay, at least not that I've seen.

Now that I'm about caught up I think I will see if the library is open to ask the details.

I've heard that very, very few libraries have gotten on the Blu-ray bandwagon.  We're not going in that direction at all...at least, any time soon.

I don't know why, but my library gets all new movies in regular and Blu-ray.

You are lucky.

Except that I don't have a Blu-ray player :)

Just read that Deanna Durbin died today at the age of 91. Please don't say who is Deanna Durbin.

Yes I read that. She was delightful with a wonderful singing voice.

I especially enjoyed her young adult films.

Deanna Durbin made "adult films"...when she was young?? :o

;)

LOL  I knew this would happen but I was too lazy to re-word my post.

George beat me to the joke.

Great (sick) minds think alike.

Decided to come home and work here today.  Cal was really mad when we got home.

Oy!

Thanks Elmore.  I'm hoping she's ok too

Dear DR Cillaliz,

If a juror does something that gets him/her removed from a jury, would there be criminal charges filed?

I've loved the library photos today. Here's our main library. It may look familiar t those who have seen the Spy Kids movies. They used it as the location for the children's spy headquarters in the movies.

Like when we decided to go into the Adult Toy Store in NYC during our HHW walk! LOL!

(It was a toy store, but geared towards adults who collect stuff, but DR Vixmom and The Vixter didn't realize that)

Oh yes!!  I was afraid to go in until Jose assured us it was fine ---- then LATER in the tour........ we stayed outside!!!

I am going to record all of the closing arguments.  Closing is my favorite part of the case.  I've been told my cross examination is the best part of my case, but I think I'm a good closer.   Watching Juan do cross reminds me of a judge who once said "Doing cross-examination doesnt' mean that you do an examination crossly"

I finally cast the Hofstetter books - boy was that hard, but someone Barry Pearl recommended last week auditioned, did a second read-through, we met, I liked her, and I just gave her the series.  We'll work together next week and then she'll start recording the new book.  And, it's Tessa Grady, who is the daughter of the late Don Grady.
