Just read that Deanna Durbin died today at the age of 91. Please don't say who is Deanna Durbin.

Yes I read that. She was delightful with a wonderful singing voice.

I especially enjoyed her young adult films.

I managed to sleep until ten, when the phone rang - so I got eight hours.  It was the publisher again, just letting me know the book was at the printers.  BTW, it's funny to watch all these authors who know about my books migrating to Author House, the latest being Carl Reiner.

I went on my bike around the lake twice this week. I am going to try to go everyday (although probably won't end up doing it). But I need the exercise.

The lake is interesting this time of year. The trees are all bare. So it's not very visually appealing. But the lake part and ducks are nice. And the no cars part is nice too.

No cars has to make it a great ride ;)

Yesterday, I signed up for Netflix.

For the first time I reserved two DVD's from the library.  One came in today.  I have no idea how many days I have to pick it up, or to keep it once I check it out.  I also need to find my library card.

Does your library carry new movies?

This is how I watch all of my movies (from the library). They seem to get most new ones. And you can request what you want. We get them for 3 days (or 1 week if it is based on a real person). We have 2 days to pick them up. And there is a $2/day fine for every day it is overdue.

Some but I will get those in BlueRay from Red Box when I can.  I don't think the library has BlueRay, at least not that I've seen.

Now that I'm about caught up I think I will see if the library is open to ask the details.

DR George we have some tv series. But not a ton. I wish we had all the new series. They do have Homeland and popular stuff like that. I think the tv series are a week.

I always find it interesting how different that different libraries are...for instance, we have feature films, documentaries and TV series.  The TV series (which can have 10 discs or more) can be checked out for up to three weeks, and most feature films have a seven-day due date.  We also only have a 15˘/day fine.  Patrons can accrue up to $10 in fines and still not be blocked from checking out materials.  If, however, they go over $10, then they're cut off until they pay.

I saw a few tv series.  In fact, the DVD on hold for me is John Le Carré's Smiley's People.  It says the DVD will be held for 12 days.  Now to find out how many I can keep it.

The city/suburb I live in has a lot of bike paths. So I can do a whole bike ride only on bike paths. There are just a few places that I have to cross (but it is from one bike path to the other side of the bike path.

I do like the lake because it's more peaceful and not windy. The other day when I went it was very windy on the way back. So I had to re-route myself back thru the lake. That added 10 minutes. And so it was 45 minutes for my first bike ride of the season. I was tired.

DR Jane 12 days would seem crazy to me if someone else wanted it. But I think you said before that your library holds books for a long time too. My library only holds books for 2 days also. I think that is totally fair since there are others waiting. And our library is only for our suburb. So basically everybody would live within 10 minute drive.

I get to keep the DVD 7 days, not bad.  I didn't ask about late fees as I don't plan on needing to pay any.

Right, where many of our library users don't always get into town every day.  I know I don't.  Plus the odd hours sometimes make it difficult to get there when they are open.  They don't open until noon on Thursday & Saturday and are closed on Friday.  For some reason I tend to want to go on Fridays.

Decided to come home and work here today.  Cal was really mad when we got home. She has the funniest mad face.   Anyway, she's resting comfortably.  Between the weather, worrying about her and not getting a lot of sleep, I'm not feeling so hot.  Oh, I haven't had any caffine today.  Maybe I'll make some ice tea.

I hope Callie is okay!

I've been going through hell booking an August flight to Dublin. Oy!

I've heard that very, very few libraries have gotten on the Blu-ray bandwagon.  We're not going in that direction at all...at least, any time soon.

I can understand this.  Sometimes Red Box doesn't offer Blu-ray or we take the DVD because the Blue-ray is out.

But how many copies of a particular title does your library have?  It's a stand-alone, right?  We're a 27-branch system, so three selectors buy for the whole district.  And we have what's called a floating or shared collection, meaning if someone at the Tumwater branch checks out a title and returns it to the Aberdeen (or any other) branch, it stays at the branch where it was returned.  It doesn't get sent back to Tumwater.  That has cut WAY down on having to move the items back and forth and back and forth.

Durbin didn't die today. She died a few days ago. It was just announced today. Partial obit from the Times:

"Deanna Durbin, who as a plucky child movie star with a sweet soprano voice charmed American audiences during the Depression and saved Universal Pictures from bankruptcy before she vanished from public view 64 years ago, has died, a fan club announced on Tuesday. She was 91.

In a newsletter, the Deanna Durbin Society said Ms. Durbin died “a few days ago,” quoting her son, Peter H. David, who thanked her admirers for respecting her privacy. No other details were given.

Ms. Durbin had remained determinedly out of public view since 1949, when she retired to a village in France with her third husband."

Except for things taken out of the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts, the NY Public Library works the same way. You can check out at any branch and return to any branch and it stays where it's returned until it's taken out and possibly returned someplace else.

Our overdue rate for DVDs is $3 a day and all DVDs are for 7 days only, though you can renew up to 2 times.

Like when we decided to go into the Adult Toy Store in NYC during our HHW walk! LOL!

(It was a toy store, but geared towards adults who collect stuff, but DR Vixmom and The Vixter didn't realize that)

There are 15 libraries in Jackson County.  The other DVD I requested is being shipped from another branch.  As far as I can tell returns stay where they are returned until requested elsewhere.  When I look something up it tells me how many copies there are and where it is.

Interestingly for the eBooks, which I have been told are all of Oregon, there might be a footnote saying some branches get the book faster.  When I've noted that the book has gotten to me much faster than other books with a shorter queue.  I don't know if Ashland has requested or paid for extra eBooks for this benefit.

We can't renew e-books, either, but we can just put on another hold and get it again...AND if we don't link our reader to "the cloud" or whatever, the book will actually stay on the device and is readable until we do.  It's one way to work the system.

Not linking is best.  I've come close to using that method but so far finished in time.  Putting another hold on a book when I might have to wait ages doesn't appeal to me.
