Glad the sessions are going so well, bk! May it continue through to the completion of the album. Can't wait to see some video from the studio.
Nice song in today's notes, too!
-
DR The Vixter is quite the artiste, these days! :)

Anyone for a BLT pizza?

Speaking of eating, here's another of my most favorite classic cartoons from B. Kilban:

Congrats on the successful recording session yesterday, BK!

Good morning, DR KevinH.
Sorry to leave you, but the dog won't wait another moment for his breakfast.
-
Good morning, all! I'm off to Toyland for a meeting/rehearsal with Rob Berman. I believe I'll be there most of the afternoon.
Last night I watched four episodes of the BBC series THE GRAND; I enjoyed much of it, although after a while I got sick of Stephen Moyer's post-war traumatic angst.
DR vixmom, great photos! I wish I'd told you to give them my love; I miss Bill's posting here.

One of my favorites, too!

Thanks for the lovely pictures DR Vixmom!
-
Nice cake topper.

Re: yesterday's TOD. I think the first tours of musicals I saw when I was a kid were CATS, LES MIS and PHANTOM.
-
Heading out to Connecticut to see a play later this morning. Some friends have rented a car.
-
Had a lovely dinner with old friends at Zuni last night, after seeing a show in the afternoon. The food there is as good as I recalled, though the restaurant had curiously lost our reservation (for 8 people), so had to scramble to get us a table together.
-
DR CHASSMITH posted a program from South Pacific at the War Memorial. I believe he is correct when he said it had to be a local production because THE PARKER PLAYHOUSE is right next to it and that it a professional touring house.
The building:

BTW Anyone else notice what is wrong with the program?

Very odd story about the 92nd Street Y.

I found an old acting bio the other day and here is a portion of it.
Some of Michael's favorite theater roles have been playing the title roles in "Harvey", "Waiting For Godot", "Susan and God" (God, not Susan) and "Waiting For Lefty".
-
Good morning, all.
Didn't get to sleep till the middle of the frickin night but somehow feel decent this morning.
Coffee!
-
Oh my. That program "problem". OMG. :)
-
How did I not see that? Thank you, DR Mike!
-
Parker Playhouse wasn't built till the mid-1960s. I got to a few things there before going away to college. Saw Merman in CALL ME MADAM.
-
The only other professional touring house I remember was Coconut Grove Playhouse. Loved going down there to see a show.
-
Congratulations to the happy couple!
(Their wedding looks a lot like mine did.)
-
Good morning, by the way.
We had a very good rain last night.
-
Sunday morning greetings! A rare Sunday morning at home for me - very quiet.
-
And the word of the day is: BUSHWA!
And The Song Of The Day Is: BLAH,BLAH,BLAH
-
Congratulations to DR WFO and Joe!
-
Yesterday's recording session sounds like HEAVEN.
-
Congrats to WFO and Joe on their marriage.

We had a very good rain last night.

-
Good morning, all.
Up late after a fairly restless night of sleep (thanks to too much yerba mate).
Congratulations, BK, on a great recording session. Vibes and xylophones that the rest is as smooth.
-
Congratulations to the happy couple. (I love the Hawaiian shirt. I bought the same on my first trip to Maui.)
-
Greetings from Toyland!
-
THREE!
-
I'm up, and I could be out the door to jog by eight, but I just can't - too close to last night's jog and I'm just too tired and must just awaken myself slowly but surely, not pound myself this early.
-
Nice wedding photos.

Brent Barrett and Jason Graae news:
http://www.sacbee.com/2013/07/21/5577455/music-circus-gears-up-for-the.html#mi_rss=Theater
-
I forgot to mention that I've been told that the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, once home to the Oscars, theater in the round and concerts, but more recently home to nothing but an occasional book fair, is going to be demolished.
-
Now, Brent and Jason - there is a perfect example of "prying eyes." I have been trying to do Sugar for years - I've suggested and lobbied for it with Reprise (out of business now because of their inept artistic decisions), Musical Theatre Guild, Cabrillo, Musical Theater West, and anyone else who would listen - and my casting for it has always been the same: Brent and Jason. So, it's amusing that the director who's doing the show, who is known for replicating other people's work, uses that casting and gets that show done at a theater where he can make the show choices. And that's why I've stopped throwing my ideas around although one must if one wants to try and convince people to do things.
-
Depressing news about the Civic. It never ends.

They are perfect for those roles. Too bad it sounds as if they won't be getting the directorial support they deserve.

Been reading "Before the Parade Passes By," a bio of Gower Champion and have just finished the "Hello, Dolly!" chapter.
BlueGobo.com has posted a visually faded but fascinating hour-long TV special of Mary Martin in Japan with a tour of "Dolly" that includes several scenes of the show on stage.
http://www.bluegobo.com/production/2883199/video/10692
-
They don't need directorial support - they'll be great. I'm glad someone thought that casting was worthwhile. But he didn't think of it himself. :)

Here is another photo of the recording session.

DR CHASSMITH
Did you ever go to the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach? It closed now but they are trying to save it from being demolished. Went there once to see Lettuce & Lovage with Julie Harris

No, I sure didn't...sorry to say.
-
That was a most entertaining video DR JOHN G....I vaguely remember it being advertised, but I know I didn't watch it.....
-
Lovely photos from DR VIXMOM - thanks for sharing!!!

Congratulations to MR BK et.al. on their accomplishments yesterday and continued recording vibes for today.

The Mary Martin DOLLY thing is great. Of course one wants more of the actual show, but even the other bits are a wonderful look back at one heckuva time.
-
That is sweet, DR Vixmom - thanks so much for sharing!
DITTO! :)

LOL :) The drawing was great!

I wondered where it was. That was sweet so she didn't miss out on it.

Yes, Vixter did a great job with those.

Happy Sunday, all!
BK, loved your description of the recording session yesterday. I love studio work. And though I've sung with 26 pieces behind me in performance at the Victory Awards years back (and many large orchestras in shows, when they were affordable to producers), but I've never been in a studio with that many pieces. Must have been gorgeous to hear.
I also loved your Kritzer Time song.
I did not love Shrek, the Musical last night, which came as no surprise to me. Apologies to those who do love it. Lots of great work was onstage, but like a cheap hot dog, it was mostly filler. 'Nuff said.
-
Hello all and Happy Sunday! I was away on vacation for the past 2 weeks; so, there hasn't been a new Broadway Radio Show until today....and it's a fun one. I had a lovely phone conversation this morning with Tony nominated writer Bill Russell to discuss the release of the cast recording of The Last Smoker In America as well as the latest news on the Side Show revival. Check it out!

Listened to the cast album once. I was surprised at how characterless the whole thing was. And for being based on a raucous comedy, the songs were largely laugh free.

Many congrats to E&T DR WFO and his everlovin' Joe!
-
Hello, everyone.
Congrats to DR WFO and Joe! Vibes for continued happiness!
-
Vixmom, is that Vixdad on the right in the bright shirt? We don't see many pics of Vixdad.
-
The Vixter did a lovely job with the caketop cartoon. She definitely has talent.
-
Bruce, I'm glad the recording sessions have been going so well. I'm amazed at the size of the orchestra! Looking forward to seeing more pics and hearing the final product.
-
Singdaw, I always loved Kliban, too. I used to have several Kliban tee-shirts. My favorite was of two cats. One says to the other, "If I had two dead rats I'd give you one." True love--for felines. I like the cartoon you posted, too.
-
It has been overcast and cool here all weekend. I'm very grateful, given that so much of the nation has been suffering with the heat.
Cool vibes to all who need them!

As you all know, I'm no fan of the composer or her former husband.
And i am hone. I accomplished a lot and had a really wonderful work session with Rob. I think ROBERTA is going to be fun. Also got a couple of funny emails from Mr Graae, who aches all over from carrying a double bass in a pair of high heels.

DREK - The Musical

I posted that because DR TCB isn't here.

I already voiced my opinion of her behavior at THE CRADLE WILL ROCK band rehearsal.
I think tonight i am going to watch Jeremy Brett as Robert Browning in THE BARRETTS OF WIMPOLE STREET. I'll pretend I'm watching ROBERT AND ELiZABETH and sing the score at the proper moments.

Don't they all?

Back from today's session and must shortly be on my way to The Federal.
-
Today's session was also great fun, although not as smooth as yesterday's thanks to three difficult charts. I had several suggestions for little changes today, but once we got everything it was splendid and certainly we wrapped on time and that's all that matters. When there's no click track and a lot of rubato and Lanny is conducting and not playing keyboard, it can take a bit of time to get it together and working the way we all want it to. But these musicians are fantastic and it really only took a couple of times talking through things for them to get with it. Today we only had strings, French horns and reeds, plus rhythm, harp and percussion. Once everyone left we had some Astroburger (great, as always - last time I had one was Sandy's vocal session on the Christmas album, which was last September or October!), then we did the one piano vocal, which came out great, and then Lanny began doing a handful of piano overdubs - I stayed for two of those, and then left he and the engineer to finish the few others.
-
Then I picked up a couple of packages from yesterday - nothing too exciting.
-

Glad the sessions are going so well, bk! May it continue through to the completion of the album. Can't wait to see some video from the studio.
Nice song in today's notes, too!
Ditto and ditto!

PAGE FIVE WEDDING DANCE!!
-
Just back from the most lovely dog walk. It is SO much less hot and humid than it has been here for the past week.
I also love that magical time, on a summer evening, when the light is golden - after the sun has sunk below the horizon, but while it is still light out. And the fireflies! :)
-
We don't get many fireflies here in Texas. But today we got a late-afternoon shower and the faintest glimmer of rainbow. Just beautiful.
-

Beautiful poetic description. :)

Lovely. Did you take a photo?
-
Today, I've finally finished making the list of everything that's on my upstairs DVD burner so I'll know what to put on each DVD when I start burning them since my burner is COMPLETELY filled up. I'll look through my list and make some notes on what I want to put together...an opera disc, a musical theater disc, etc. Most of the clips are from the Classic Arts Showcase (http://www.classicartsshowcase.org/) channel (I think the oldest film clip that I recorded was from 1903!). I like to put together things that are linked in some way. For instance, I have a ballet version and the opera version of the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet." I'll put those together. I have several performances of songs from "Candide" (from the Bernstein recording to live performances by other opera singers) that will go together. I wonder if Larry knows about this, but I even have Kiri Te Kanawa singing "Art is Calling For Me" from "The Enchantress" by Victor Herbert. Once I decide what all will go together, I can put up to eight hours on each disc, but with things like this, I usually keep them to under three hours. More time on the disc means less quality overall. I have to burn them in real time, so that will time a lot of overnight recording, but that's fine. The DVD burner is very quiet.
-
Now, I need to take a shower and get dressed and get out of my house for a while.
Be back later!

I was chauffering the happy couple at the time

LOVE THIS!

Thanks, DR Jane! :)

Oh my gosh, DR Vixmom - how awful!! Glad that Vixdad was not hurt. AND I hope that the other driver was insured! How vexing. All of the paperwork and inconvenience that will now follow. :P

Lovely. Did you take a photo?
It was too faint to register on the camera. I did try.
-
Sorry to read about Vixdad and the Vixdadmobile. Hope all is OK.
-
Watching "The Guilt Trip" and have gotten to the scene at the Big Texan where Barbra eats the 4-pound steak dinner. I went there once, and, thankfully, my friend Hillary would not let me try.
-
Terrible news about the VixMobile.....
-
Glad to hear the session went well...for the most part.....perhaps we will learn more in the notes.
-
If you hold a small flashlight in your hand and "answer" a firefly's call by blinking the same, the firefly will come and land on your hand....
-
We do dog walks in the mornings, since I am gone most evenings....perhaps in the fall after theatre season, an evening walk will be in order.
-
Oy! More VixMobile adventures! The damned fun never ends over there! :o :)
-
If you hold a small flashlight in your hand and "answer" a firefly's call by blinking the same, the firefly will come and land on your hand....
I did not know this and will have to try it! I hope I don't inadvertently blink out an obscene message!

Barbra eats the 4-pound steak dinner.

He was in a gas station when the Honda Pilot in front of him decided to back up (apparently either not looking or unable to see the little Hyuandai Elantra behind him) despite Vixdad's frantic honking the guy kept slowly backimng up unitl he started pushing the Vixdadmobile backwards
I was chauffering the happy couple at the time
I hope the guy was insured and there were witnesses.

We don't get many fireflies here in Texas. But today we got a late-afternoon shower and the faintest glimmer of rainbow. Just beautiful.
Lovely. Did you take a photo?
It was too faint to register on the camera. I did try.
They are difficult to capture.

Love fireflies. Growing up in Ohio, we had them every year and took them for granted. Don't remember whether we saw them in Florida. Then I didn't see them for many years, in California and even here. But oddly, I've been once again seeing them like crazy this summer. I have no idea why I wasn't noticing them all the previous years right here.

Or that everyone agreed right then and there what happened.
A friend of mine had some kid back into her car from a full stop. I forget the details. But she called the police to get an accident report filed right there at the scene, and fortunately the idiot kid didn't deny what he'd done, so there was no problem determining who was picking up the tab.

Well, I needs get me to bed for some beauty sleep, as tomorrow will be a busy, active day.
-
Where are the usual late night suspects?
-
They must be rounded up.
-
Well, we at least get to PAGE SIX.
In the nick redman of time.
And there's never enough nick redman of time, in this DR's humble opinion.
So let's enjoy it.

Couple of hours ago I turned the TV on to find MON ONCLE playing on TCM. It was almost over, but looked so damned good, and I didn't know they played any of those. I'd actually been thinking it's time for a little Tati festival -- all the features, earliest to latest, and might just do that one of these weeks.

Okay, soliloquy's over.
Time to surf a few channels and fall asleep.

We used to catch them when I was little and put them in a jar with holes cut in the lid

I think this time I've finished my paper. So, good night, all.

Back from The Federal - a show featuring someone named Greg Mark (I guess he's been on One Life to Live or one of those soaps) and Sharon McNight. Miss McNight was her usual feisty and hilarious self and had us all in the palm of her hand. Not so Mr. Marx, who seemed like a textbook of what never to do in a club act - uncomfortable in his own skin, the horrible nervous habit of trying to adjust the mic stand repeatedly for no reason (I counted at least twenty-three examples of it - the mic stand had been pre-set at his height and didn't need to be adjusted EVER), adjusting the actual mic repeatedly for no reason, and reading lyrics from a paper on a music stand occasionally, and the most neurotic thing singers can do, the endless drinking of water at every opportunity. Once is fine, twice okay - anything beyond that is just nerves and stupidity. Miss McNight never ONCE took a drink of water and survived.

I'd had a bacon cheeseburger and zucchini fries from Astroburger for lunch so I had no intention of having anything but an artichoke. But the minute we sat down, Skip, the fellow who oversees the club (and a great guy) brought Adryan Russ and I the new chicken dish they're adding to what is going to be a very limited menu for our shows - that will help them get the food out in a timely fashion - so, I had the chicken breast - it wasn't huge but I had to eat it and it was too much damn food for the day. But boy was it great. So, when I got home, despite my thinking there would be no jog today, I did a three-mile jog and feel better for having done so.

Let's get a frenzy or nine going, why don't we?
-
I say nix to page six.
-
Listening to music.
-
We've come to a pretty pass, haven't we.
-
We need some ACTION, so ha cha cha.

Query from an actress who's playing Kate in Kiss Me, Kate - re I Hate Men - there's a lyric she's not figuring out and I can't really figure it out either - but maybe one of you can - it's the Cain and Abel Betty Grable reference below:
"I hate 'em all, from modern man way back to Father Adam
He sired Cain and Abel thought the Lord above forbade 'em,
I'd hate both Cain and Abel e'en though Betty Grable had 'em.
I hate men."
-
I've also wondered about those lyrics.
Cockney slang for table is "Cain and Abel", and they also say "Betty Grable" as slang for table.
Must be something to that.
-
Happy that the recording session was so happy.
Looking forward to photos and videos, not to mention the album.

I can vaguely recall seeing fireflies once...maybe, but I can't remember where I might've seen them. When we lived in Texas, I was probably 3 years old. I barely have any memories of when we lived there, but maybe the fireflies were from that time.

I don't know, but I've always assumed that it's an insult about Betty Grable's age. ::) Just a thought.
