Well, you've read the notes, the notes finished the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the finished cows come home.

RE: I HATE MEN Lyrics from yesterday

The line in question was actually deleted in the original version. I know that it doesn't answer the question but I'm curious is she playing the role and the lyrics are being used?

(building perhaps on what George said about the Betty Grable lyric in "I Hate Men").

I guess since Betty Grable had been in Porter's "DuBarry Was a Lady" - the question occurs to me as to whether Betty Grable was being slightly kidded in a  friendly, loving way, since she had gone from being married to Jackie Coogan for only about two years, and then married Harry James a few years before Kiss me Kate.

It may be telling that they did delete that section originally.

Good morning, all! Today is Pied Piper Day, the day that supposedly 130-160 children (depending on whose historic account) vanished from the German town of Hamelin in 1376. This has fascinated me since I first heard Robert Browning's poem somewhere in my elementary education past.

Today, I am off to Toyland to deal with some ROBERTA adjustments that Rob Berman and I decided on yesterday.  It will be a day of cutting and pasting.

Good morning, all.

Had an interesting dream along usual themes, but BK's reporting of Astroburger foodstuffs (which I think first appeared last night?) ties right into the food element of the dream.  It just happens that I had a Shake Shack burger on Saturday and a Five Guys burger yesterday, and even though the dream was about a hot dog jernt, this was all obviously related.

Good morning, all.

On the song lyrics, two theories. Take 'em for their worth on a Monday morning:

Cain and Abel have been used as a euphemism for sexual organs in the past, with the well-endowed Abel having been killed out of penis envy by the smaller Cain. So, it may have been some bit of dirt about the multiple married Grable.

Or, if as another set of euphemisms goes, Cain refers to a womb, Abel to the penis. Therefore, the line could have referenced a rumor that Betty was bisexual.

the Rat Catcher's House, or the Pied Piper's House, of Hameln, Germany. The house has a plaque on it that reads, "In the year 1284 on John and Paul's Day, the 26 of June-- 130 children born in Hameln were seduced by a piper, dressed in all kinds of colors, and lost at the place of execution near the koppen". The house is located on Bungelosenstrasse ("drumless street"), because traditionally, no music has been played on it since the piper.

June 26 or July 22 are the dates given for the events. The town of Hamelin in Germany uses the June date. The confusion of dates is because the Brothers Grimm cite 26 June 1284 as the date the Pied Piper led the children out of the town, while the poem by Robert Browning gives it as 22 July 1376.

DR Vixmom that is terrible about the Vixmobile. I wish people like that could be punished. I'm sorry but if you backing into someone's car and they are honking and you still back up into them ... well you don't deserve to have a license. I'd love to hear their rationale for why they didn't stop when they heard the honking.

TOD:

I'm not sure if the first amusement park I went to was Disneyland in Anaheim or Playland (now, I believe, gone) in Seattle.  I did both when I was in high school, but I don't really recall which was first.

Actually, if you've read either my memoir or my screenplay, THE SUMMER FOLK, you'll recall that when I was about 10-11, we had our own mini-amusement park in Soap Lake, WA.  One summer, my father (on a whim) purchased a merry-go-round and kiddie ride from this carnival that was stranded, and we operated it all summer.  Rides were nine cents apiece.

It's a great TOD, but I'm finding that coming up with my earliest amusement park experiences is surprisingly challenging.  I'll be back later with something.

Cain = Jackie Coogan
Abel = Harry James

TOD: Earliest memories of a trip to an amusement park was to Coney Island near Cincinnati. It is now Kings Island and I believe that an episode of the Partridge Family was filmed there.

I am not a roller coaster person, and the horrible accident that occurred this weekend will likely prevent me from ever going on a roller coaster again. I also don't care for things that turn me upside down. That said, I love the Ferris wheel and the swings. And that tube you get in where they spin you around and then drop the floor out from under you.

I was never big on merry-go-rounds, with the exception of the one in Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train.

During WWII, when Jackie Coogan was in the army, when he met guys he would say:  "How would you like to shake the hand that shook the penis that boinked Betty Grable?"

He stopped saying it when a smart aleck recruit asked: "Whose penis was it?"

My first amusement park was named Riverside in Indianapolis.....not very clean and the people there weren't very friendly....it was kind of a scary place....and got scarier every year.  We only went a couple of times before King's Island opened in Ohio....then we went there!

Here is a picture of the Thriller roller coaster at Riverside sometime in the mid 1970's just before it was all torn down.

TOD:

We didn't have amusement parks anywhere near where I grew up.  We'd have all the rides at the County fair each year, and I enjoyed the Boardwalk at Daytona Beach for one week each summer (usually the 4th of July week).  The rides were okay there, but it was the "amusements"...games and such...that kept me entertained...especiallly Skee-Ball.

In my mid-teens, I enjoyed the amusement park at Myrtle Beach SC...especially the roller coaster I'd have paid double to get off at the top of the first rise.  After the complete ride, however, I was in love with the thrill of it all.

And, yes, this weeken's accident is exactly why I'd never do it again.  There is something to be said for being young and stupid!  But far more can be said about being sadder but wiser.

In the last Filichia column at Kritzerland, he discusses the Goodspeed Opera House's production of "Hello, Dolly!" with Klea Blackhurst and writes:

Even when she joins the chorus in “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” her voice stands out – not in that obnoxious way that Julie Andrews sounds when she’s showing off at the end of “Edelweiss.” Blackhurst is simply being a good team player who’s doing her job in singing; can she help it if her voice just happens to be heard among the rest?

For the record, and of course it's only my opinion, Julie Andres was never, in any way, obnoxious in her vocals for "The Sound of Music"...and I have always adored that she went up an octave on those final notes of "Edelweiss" at the folk festival.  In fact, since the entire audience was singing, too, it reminded you that the Von Trapp family was on the stage singing.

There, I've said it and feel much better.

I finally broke down and got the Sepia CD of Julie Andrews and Giorgio Tozzi singing "Rose-Marie." I hadn't heard that recording in years and all I can say is she can sing any way she wants.

I was up at nine and the sprinklers, as I knew they wouldn't be, didn't come on.  Which means there hasn't been water since last Wednesday - I don't know why setting the timers on this box is so difficult that only one person can do it, but I've called that person and he's coming here at noon.  I won't be here, but hopefully he'll let each station do its job today.

Sprinklers just came on - thirty-five minutes later than they used to, so apparently the sprinkler guy, who told me they were set exactly as they had been, which was nine, has his watch off by thirty-five minutes.

I really should go to Kings Island someday.  All the years I've driven past it ..... and it was only a couple of years ago that I even learned that many (?) of the Coney Island rides were relocated there.  To the best of my knowledge, I was never at the old Coney Island.  (We're talking the Ohio one here, folks.)

TOD - my first memory of a ride was the old-fashioned carousel at Great Falls of the Potomac, which I rode when our family was visiting Washington, DC, when I was almost 7.  From Detroit, we'd board a boat and cruise downriver to Boblo Island Amusement Park, but I was not much of a daredevil.  Didn't go on a roller coaster until my sister and I took her kids to Kings Island after I'd moved to SW Ohio in my early 20s.  With Richard and Rob, I've had great fun on the water-flumes, especially the then-new Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios California in 1996.  Nowadays, I avoid most of the thrill rides, for cardiac reasons  ::)

Anyhoo...

My first "big" amusement park might have been Cedar Point (on Lake Erie) which my grandmother took me and my sister to for one day at an early age.  I only have the vaguest memory of being there, nothing specific.  I also very vaguely remember one at Buckeye Lake, east of Columbus, but am not even positive whether we went to it or just saw it from the road.  Another one seen from the road at an early age was the Palisades one in NJ opposite upper Manhattan.  And on one of those childhood trips to NYC in the late '50s we did drive out to Coney Island one afternoon.  Again, only the faintest of memories, but there might be a bad black-and-white snapshot or two somewhere.

As for SOLID memories... well, definitely the "midway" portions of the Ohio State Fair and a couple of county fairs in Ohio.  If we're going to count things like that, and we might have to.  Those were always my favorite parts of any fair.

Honestly, though, until we get to the age where I was going to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I don't have a lot to contribute in the way of true amusement parks (as opposed to "theme parks").  In L.A. I went to Magic Mountain several times and liked it a lot, but way back in the mid-'70s.  However, with that exception, I haven't been drawn to the huge contemporary Six Flags type of parks.  Which is probably silly.  But I missed the glory years of all the incredible seaside parks -- on both coasts -- like the one BK so beautifully invokes in the Kritzer books.  I would absolutely love going to some of the remaining old amusement parks, like Kennywood which is near Pittsburgh, and somehow or other I need to make that happen.

More later as I think of it.

Two major musicals, two straight plays, and three Theatre Workshop for ages grade school-high school....usually auditions & rehearsals for the June show begin in late April.....once we start, it's about two and one half weeks between shows, with the workshops in between the June-July shows and the July-August shows...and we're done with everything by the third week of September.

Charla Doherty was a fairly successful child actress who is probably best remembered for her roles in Take Her, She’s Mine (1963), as Jimmy Stewart’s youngest daughter, and Village of the Giants (1965).  For a time, she was also a regular on Days of Our Lives (1965-66).

Charla and I were a couple for the last eighteen months of her life.

My newly published screenplay, CHARLA, is inspired by her story and what happened during those troubled eighteen months.  It is available in both paperback and on Kindle.

I hope you get a chance to read it.

For your viewing pleasure...

Summer, 1956.  My mom, dad, me, my sister, uncle, and grandmother piled into a very early '50s car and drove from Columbus to New York to visit my great aunt who lived in Brooklyn.  With no air conditioning.  Such a trip, in those conditions, is unimaginable now.  Anyway, identified in Dad's handwriting, here are the two known-to-be-remaining snapshots from our afternoon at Coney Island.  (I just know there were at least a couple more.)  The parachute jump was still open then, before being closed for many years.  The first shot is just strangers, but in the second...

I gotta tell you.  But I won't.  The two "reasonable" copies of The Cuckoo's Calling - both at around $1,000 - got snapped up - I'm just surprised at how long it took the dealers, and let me tell you they WERE dealers, to buy it.  But then again, every copy in the last two days has sold for over $1500.  It's only a little over a week since this all hit.  If there really were under 3000 printed, which is probably the case, while it will never be as rare as the first Harry Potter book, it could conceivably climb higher, probably to about two grand in the next few days, then beyond - the publisher is being very coy about not giving out a number for the first edition.  But given that the second and third printings hit four days ago, and that they sold less than 1500 of whatever the first edition was, well, there can't have been too many more printed.  And if they had, say, another 1000 or the original run, they're much better off just sitting on them while the madness continues.

Topic of the Day:

When I was in Kindergarten or maybe first grade, my dad was in the army and we lived in Germany.  I can remember going on a couple of field trips with my class to local German amusement parks.  One time, we were on the bus from the school and one of my friends, Richard (one of two Richards in my class) would draw on his teeth with crayons.  I don't know why, but that was his thing.  I can remember riding a train at the amusement park and when we went to the public bathrooms, you had to pay 5 or 10 pfennig (equivalent to the penny) to get into a stall.  That was so weird to us kids...that it was free to pee but you had to pay to poop. ::) That's really all that I can remember of what was probably my first amusement park experience.

Since we've moved back to the states, I've gone to Disneyland a few times, but no other Disney theme park.  I went on the Matterhorn, Space Mountain, the Indiana Jones ride, It's a Small World (of course!), Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted House, the Peter Pan ride and too many others to remember.  I've never gone on a roller coaster that went upside down.  I've also gone to the Puyallup Fair and the Thurston County Fair, but it's been years since I've gone to either of those.  Seattle Center used to have an amusement park but it's all gone.  And I've gone to travelling fairs that have come to town.  But that's about it.

The Cincinnati Coney Island was my first Amusement Park as well.  The most distinct memory I have of it was parking on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River and taking a ferryboat across the river to the park.

I love rollercoasters of any and all sorts, but the DH does not, and so I rarely have an opportunity to go on them. And this weekend's accident notwithstanding, I still would, if I had a chance. But I'm funny that way.

Maybe because there are so many Six Flags but they do seem to have more deaths than other parks. :(

In L.A. I went to Magic Mountain several times and liked it a lot, but way back in the mid-'70s.  However, with that exception, I haven't been drawn to the huge contemporary Six Flags type of parks.

Compared to Disneyland, and later Cedars Point & Hershey Park, I found it ok.

I went to the website and it seems they have had some rides.  Bryan had a computer class there everyday for a week.  Craig & I would pick him up and then we all walked out the back way to enjoy the park for an hour or two before leaving.  I didn't feel guilty taking advantage of the situation for a free pass, plus we spent money on dinner before going home.

We went a couple of times and enjoyed it very much.  For years I wore my shirt that said "I survived the Super Duper Looper".

That was the first roller coaster I went on that went upside down.  I only went on it because Bryan & Craig went & I felt Craig was too young to go without me.  Keith wasn't going on it.  As we went down into the loop I yelled "Ooooooh Shit!"  The boys wanted to go right back on the ride only Craig, who was too young to use such bad language, told me I couldn't ride with him again if I swore. :)   By the 5th time I was waving my arms like everyone else.

Our first trip there was over the 4th of July and we sat on the lawn watching fireworks.  It was a very nice weekend.

After the amusement park closed, the Comet was sold to an amusement park in Lake George , NY, a few hours away.

Growing up I was lucky there were multiple locations to go on rides.  In the summer's my father would often take me to Kiddyland, or whatever the place on Pico was called, on his half days.  Once Pacific Ocean Park opened it wasn't too long before I didn't need a parent to take me there.  I remembered my mother liked to go & it was she that gently convinced me not to go on the big roller coaster with my older brother & sister.  It is interesting I never even thought about going on it until the day Keith saved me from flying out of it.  My last few times there were with Keith and friends, the last time before it closed with only Keith.

One early memory of Disneyland was a two day trip there with my parents.  My father went for a convention & worked while my mother relaxed around the pool at the hotel.  I'm sure they spent part of one day at Disneyland with us but mostly my brother, sister, sister's best friend, and I had total freedom running around the park on our own.  Sometimes it was great having older siblings though I wonder if today children are permitted to run around the park without adult supervision.

The mall was 20/25 minutes from where we lived and there wasn't an amusement park across the street.  We moved to PA in '82.

I went to the mall website and read the following:

Willow Grove Park is distinguished by its rich history as a development on the site of a famed Victorian-era amusement park, which put the town of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, on international maps. In its heyday, tens of thousands visited the Park daily to behold world-class concerts by such musical greats as John Philip Sousa, captivating colored Electric Fountain shows in the center of the Park’s expansive lake, and novel amusements, including roller coasters, toboggan rides and two magnificent carousels.

In 1982, the site was transformed into a thriving, fashion-forward shopping center, and the magic and excitement surrounding the original Park was reborn.

Funny, while it was very nice I don't recall the mall being magical.

I remember reading several years ago that since Elizabeth has been around for so long and Charles is really getting up there in age, that he should step aside and let Prince William become king when Elizabeth either dies or abdicates because of her age.  I'd also read that he wouldn't do it...but you never know.

Considering how long she has been queen I expect Charles will still have a few good years left in him to "rule".  I also suspect his son may be more suited for the job but then he might not want it too soon and prefer to spend time with his family.

True, but considering how old the Queen Mum was when she died (101, wasn't it?), QE could still be on the throne for another 15+ years!

Watching Live with Kelly and Michael.  It's Broadway week.  Today they featured Pippin. Unfortunately, Kelly is performing along with the Pippin actors.  Oh, well, at least I'm getting an idea of what the show is about.

Good morning, all! Today is Pied Piper Day, the day that supposedly 130-160 children (depending on whose historic account) vanished from the German town of Hamelin in 1376. This has fascinated me since I first heard Robert Browning's poem somewhere in my elementary education past.

I have always suspected Van Johnson.

The Massapequa Zoo  in Massapequa  and  Adventureland in Farmingdale were my first amusement parks --  The Massapequa Zoo is long gone but  Adventureland is still there -  (about 1/2 mile from my office)

Sweet Liberty with Alan Alda and Michael Caine filmed at Adventureland and so did Music and Lyrics with drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant -- supposedly the movie Adventureland  was really about our Adventureland -- but it did not film there

I snarl, I hiss: How can ignorance be compared to bliss?
I spark, I fizz for the lady who knows what time it is.
I cheer, I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save
 The sadder-but-wiser girl for me.

For some reason, I had this phobia about the "World of Tomorrow" ride (is that the right name?) in Tomorrowland. I was scared that I was going to be shrunk down to microscopic size, and what if they couldn't undo it?     :)

T.O.D.

When I was very young, there was an amusement park directly across from the entrance to Point Defiance here in Tacoma; or, approximately one block from where I am now living.  It wasn't a very large park, and it had seen better days; but it was pretty magical to me.  Now the only part left is the go-cart track.

That was it, except for the Puyallup Fair (just renamed the Washington State Fair) until the summer we drove down to Disneyland  in 1962.

When I was at music camp in high school they took us to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City.  We were taking one last ride on the Zambizi Zinger where the car in front of us got a little off track and started spitting sparks at us.  You go up this spiral and they stopped us at about the last minute they could.  It took about a half hour for them to climb up and slowly back us down.  It was very scary, but didn't stop me from riding coasters

Maybe because there are so many Six Flags but they do seem to have more deaths than other parks. :(

First amusement park I have a memory of is probably Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, which I still head over to a few times a year.  I don't ride the rides anymore, but usually to walk around and soak up the atmosphere and hear the free concerts on Friday nights in the summer time.

Although, I do remember Frontier Village in San Jose, which closed after Marriott's Great America opened in 1976.  Sadly, Great America is a shell of its former self as it's has changed owners several times in 37 years.  (wow 37 years!!!)

The show is called "Hollywood Who Done It" and tonight was the first read-through that I went to.  There was a read-through right after the auditions, but I had a ticket to another show, so I couldn't go to that.  There were about five people not there tonight, too.  We read through the script and the whole thing will only take about an hour without the intermission, which will probably be 20 minutes or so.

It's a real fun script and I am playing two characters:  Maxwell, one of the movie producers and Kershaw, the older police officer (or investigator, I'm not sure) who is close to retiring.  Maxwell is paired with Matthews, another producer and Kershaw is paired with Stycks, a young and impulsive cop.  Both Matthews and Stycks are played by the same actor (I think his name is Guy).  He wasn't there tonight.  I guess I'll meet him on Wednesday.  And it turns out that I have the last line of the play!  That will be fun! :D
