Title: OPEN MIC
Post by: bk on August 21, 2013, 12:29:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were open and miked, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing at an open MOOc night.

Good morning, all! Today we finish up, and I think the stress of working fifteen days straight has worn us down a bit. The orchestra has been blowing and scraping their brains out for six straight days, and we all need a break. If I'd realized this months ago, I would have asked for a recording schedule of two days, a day off, and then two more days. Anyway, this morning we do only the orchestra sections of the score, and this afternoon we get the seven-piece stage combo - alto sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, tuba, guitar-banjo, and drums.

Jason and Kim will finish up today with their numbers with this group. Tonight our principal violin, Fionnuala Hunt, is having us all over for dinner, and tomorrow morning we're off to the airport. I'll be begging for safe travel vibes tomorrow!

DRvixmom, we are recording in Dublin because in 2011 the foundation wanted to do Victor Herbert's Irish operetta EILEEN with a British-Irish cast; we've liked the rapport with our Dublin production team, and the orchestra is excellent.

It's probably also a bit cheaper to record there (rather than in NY).

OLIVER!

All the previous releases I believe were full frame versions to make them family friendly. Which I always thought was a lot of B.S. Wong.

I wonder if they will have a music only track.
I wonder if they will have any bonus footage. I remember there was a movie tie-in book with photos from the movie. There was one (maybe two) showing Oliver!'s mother giving birth to him.
I wonder if there will be a commentary track. Shani Wallis, Mark Lester and Ron Moody are still alive.

I would like to get a signed Shani Wallis insert.

But how in the HELL can Hawaii be younger than I am?  How can that possibly be?  Next you'll be telling me it's younger than springtime.  I demand a recount.

I'm not sure about any of this, but I believe any extras from the DVD release will be included - there is usually an isolated score on Twilight Time releases so I'm sure that's a possibility - no new features or extra footage.  The first DVD release was in the proper screen ratio of 2.37 - subsequent releases were full frame but I have the original DVD and it's scope.

Back from a quesadilla, some banking, and I've been having long telephonic calls with the mastering guy about the project we're about to announce on Monday, all about the nature of the sound of this CD and how we want to present it.  The problem is there have been three previous CD releases of this score - one very short, one longer, and one even longer but none, shockingly, complete.  We ARE complete and with some bonus material to boot, but I don't like the sound on any of the previous releases.  But one is walking a tightrope because that's the sound people are used to - the last of these releases is mastered so hot as to defy credulity - it's fatiguing to listen to, harsh, and almost verges on distortion.  Several of the cues have choir on them, and while the choir was recorded sans reverb and you don't want that, they have dumped so much verb on the choir that there's a slapback effect which washes everything and all that extra verb makes the orchestra sound unclear and washy.  But we're doing our own thing - it's why I insisted on getting the original three-track mixes so we would have the ability to do our own thing without just undoing their, for me, weird work.  So, yes, we of course will add some natural verb to the choir, but everything should be much cleaner and clearer on this new version, with much more dynamic range.  That's the hope anyway.

I just got in from a very long day that went splendidly. This morning, we finished up the orchestra tracks, and I had to say farewell to a number of wonderful instrumentalists and friends.  In the afternoon session, we had the seven-piece dance band, and I have to say that I think my orchestrations for them were a great deal of fun. Jason and Kim did their numbers with the band, and we finished up with Jimmy's guitar solo for "The Touch of your Hand."

Then, we had to say goodbye to Kim and her friend Michelle, since they went directly to the airport to fly back to London. Judy, Jason, Glenn, Rob and I went to the home of our principal violinist Fionnuala Hunt for a magnificent dinner: salmon, salad, potatoes, assorted  cheeses, and lots of wine. She's not only a beautiful violinist but a beautiful lady and we had a fantastic time. Her neice Rachel Kelly, who's on EILEEN and DEAREST ENEMY, joined us; she made the best cheesecake I've ever had. Ever.

Now we're back at the Hibernian Club, and I must finish packing. The car picks us up tomorrow morning at 7:15, and, God willing, I'll be in Manhattan by noon EST. I'm closing up the laptop until I get home, so please keep those travel vibes for a safe trip coming!

And now for something completely different...Prison Break Star Wentworth Miller Comes Out As Gay (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment-eonline/20130821/b451160/).

Quote
Wentworth Miller has come out as gay.

The Prison Break star decided it was time to publicly reveal his sexuality after being invited to attend a film festival in Russia.

"Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes," Wentworth, 41, says in a letter to Maria Averbakh, director of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. "However, as a gay man, I must decline.

"I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he continued in the letter, posted on GLAAD's website (http://www.glaad.org/blog/wentworth-miller-rejects-russian-film-festival-invitation-gay-man-i-must-decline). "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

He also said "if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice."

Just finished listening to Donald's tribute to Eydie Gorme.  My sister had her LP Gorme Sings Showstoppers and I used to lip sync "What Did I Have?"  The tribute was great!

You alone can make my song take flight

Be back later...much later.  But fortunately, tonight is the last night that I have to feed the various cats.  The sister, niece and sister's boyfriend come back tomorrow.  I will just have to feed my sister's cats tomorrow afternoon, and it's all over.  Hoo and Ray! ;)

AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND

BK will you record the songs that didn't make it to the first album?

PAIN
YES
THE HAPPY TIME
ME & MY BABY
THE RINK
ONLY LOVE
MY COLORING BOOK

I hope PAIN will be recorded as I don't think its ever had a commercial recording

That's why we're doing this - it will be the first complete recording and a two CD set that will hopefully have some extras.

Looking forward to getting this.

Looking forward to this release of the movie.

Don't know how often Donald logs into this part of the board but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Eydie Gorme show. I just got  chance to listen and it's a wonderful tribute.

And I believe I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed Ben's appearance on yet another radio show.  You have a great voice and you are a natural  on the air.

Safe travel vibes for DR elmore!

Speaking of YouTube, last night I was surfing on YT and I came across BELLS ARE RINGING.  The entire film!  So I started watching it.  It was great, except for one thing.  Every time the film got to a song, the audio was turned off.  Great, a musical without music.  Very weird.
