Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of baguettes and also baguettes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating a baguette whilst admiring a diamond baguette.
-
And the word of the day is: ETIOLATE!
-
Up posting early. It's only 4:49 in New York this New Years Morning.
-
I went to sleep early, guess I missed the ball in Times Square dropping at midnight to herald in the new year. :)
-
DR TCB - very sorry to hear that you have been ill. I hope that you are feeling much better PRONTO, and offer ~ ~ ~ VIBES ~ ~ ~ to that effect!
-
So very lovely to see DR Ron Pulliam posting last night. I do look forward to his return to HHW posthaste.
-
L'Shanah Tovah to all! :)
I don't get to blow the Shofar, but will have heard it done many many times before the day is over.
-
Good morning, all.
L'Shanah Tovah!
-
Vibes and hugs for TCB and Elmore. Hope you both are feeling better soon.

Me, too.

In Julia Child's autobiography, there was much discourse on baguettes and how she was able to bring French bread to an American home cook who'd wanted to try to make one. The process involved placing a pan of water in the over and sticking a hot brick in it. Very scrappy. Very Julia. I could just see her experimenting with it. The first published version also involved an asbestos tile, but that was before we knew the dangers of asbestos.

I love the three old women in The Triplets of Belleville

My boss got a call from his wife last night before leaving work. She was in tears. There was a fox in their chimney and she didn't know what to do.
Well, the fox turned out to be a raccoon and there's like a whole family of them living in there. And no one was available to take care of it.
I don't think his laughter or his threat not to come home until she dealt with it has won him any points.
On facebook, I see they pushed a chair in front of the fireplace and are leaving it until Animal Control drops by some time today to take care of it and offer then a $600 bill.
Although it's 115 outside, I'd have built a fire.

Good morning.
Mega vibes everyone.
;)

Off to another really hot day.
On days like this-100 degrees, you would think there would be less traffic on the freeways, but NO.
It is actually taking longer to get to work, a lot longer.

Good morning, all.
Oy!
Haven't had a good old good morning Oy! in a while.
Well, there it is.

When I was a kid, I loved the cartoon series entitled The Wacky Races. Goofy cars driven by goofy characters, with silent-movie pratfalls and stereotypes galore. Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly and Muttley. For me, there was no greater pinnacle of greatness. But what did I know? I was a young'un at the time.
Fast forward a few decades and I hear the announcement that there would be a deeveedee boxed set of The Wacky Races. I drooled. I couldn't wait to buy my very own copy of every single episode of my beloved childhood favorite. And then, on one of the basic cable stations, they announced a Wacky Races marathon.
It was awful. Bad animation. Awful comic timing. Annoying laugh track. Insipid, derivative stories. It was painful, painful, painful to behold. But it saved me thirty or forty bucks. Needless to say, I passed on adding The Wacky Races to my deeveedee collection.
My all-time favorite cartoon used to be Disney's Pinocchio. But that has been recently dethroned by Spirited Away, a movie I've seen at least every few months since it came out, with increasing delight each and every time. Everything about Spirited Away is something I love. It's not only my favorite cartoon feature, it's one of my favorite movies, period.
There's also a science fiction anime called Paprika with takes my breath away. Wonderful, very adult animation, and a really neat piece of sci-fi on top of it all.

I have absolutely nothing beyond knowing that it is Thursday morning. It IS Thursday--isn't it?

Thursday.
Feel better vibes for DR TCB.
Nice to see DR RLP's posting last night.

I don't care all that much for animation or Pixar or whatever....
As a child I watched a lot of the Merrie Melodies on television....with Bugs and Daffy... And there was an afternoon show that featured the Fleischer Popeye cartoons....with a Betty Boop thrown in now and then....
-
I have yet to hear about whether my meeting is today or tomorrow..... We shall see.....

Good morning, all! Welcome back, Ron!
The pain meds worked great and I slept long and well, dreaming bout Annalene recording "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."
Today, I am staying off my left leg as much as possible, so I will be reading and watching tv, having a sick day. I've got no jobs to worry about at the moment and money in the bank, so I can afford to spend the next week in bed, if I so wish, and I've got to let any muscles, tendons, whatever I might have injured yesterday heal.
I'll pop in later.

TOD:
I think the Warner cartoons hold up the best. I love Daffy Duck, particularly his rivalry with Bugs Bunny. Also the Road Runner.
-
Well, got a call almost as I hit work that someone had hijacked my debit card. A $1,200+ purchase had been made at a Best Buy and more charges were being attempted this morning. Ugh.
-
TOD:
The earliest cartoon character that I remember is Jerry the Mouse dancing with Gene Kelly in ANCHORS AWEIGH. My mother took me to see that when it played in theaters.
-
I woke up feeling like the proverbial truck hit me. It was just one of those nights when the bed attacks, and the morning backaches are a pain in the... well... back, I guess. Not to equate this at all with what DR Elmore is dealing with! Mine is usually remedied by spending an hour in the La-Z-Boy recliner which supports the back beautifully, providing true comfort. And that's what I just did. The cure, baby. The cure. Of course, I'm sure I need a new mattress as well. I won't even post how old this one is.

O.M.G. Ugh, indeed! Horrible! VIBES the bank clears this up for you IMMEDIATELY.

I also recall, early on, seeing SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS and, of course, my initial inspiration for wanting to get into show business, PINOCCHIO.

I got us to page 2!
How about that?

I got cash some place before going out of town last week and hadn't used the card since. I think they took it from the cash machine. I had the card with me. They've stopped payment and will hopefully get things cleared in a couple of days.

Good morning to all

Health vibes to all that need them. (Too many people out there that should be well)

Yes DR Elmore,
I was just going to change it to the Correct spelling of Aurelius. I hate when a name is spelled wrong!

I've been accessing HHW from my Ipad and yesterday I wanted to post a link for something from Youtube, but for some reason there was no share tab that I see when I use my laptop so I am using a regular computer right now.

Here is Liz Callaway doing the Act One Finale: The Story Goes On. This is a video from the audience. But it is a chance to see her do it live.
I think Liz's version is the best

Also Seth Rudetsky Deconstructs Liz Callaway singing The Story Goes On. He talks about the music and how she sings it. A very interesting video.

The first cartoon that I can remember is the animation sequence in Mary Poppins.
But I think my favorite series was Scooby Doo Mysteries because I think they were quite good as I was never able to figure out who the villian was.

KISMET Update:
He is not urinating blood any as of this morning. If he is still okay by tonight I will put him back into Doggy Day Camp and let him have a regualr room again on Friday.

Thursday morning greetings! I have lots of errands to run today, beginning with a "sneak peek" at the new site for our AAUW book sale. We're very excited about the new venue and I can hardly wait to see it.

Glad to hear Kismet is doing better.

TOD:
I remember seeing SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARVES in a theatre. It may have been the first movie in a theatre I saw. On the tube, I have hazy memories of Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, Beany & Cecil, Crusader Rabbit, Winky Dink, and Tom Terrific and his dog, Mighty Manfred. I also remember George Pal puppet toons, particularly Jasper. There was also a character named Rudy Kazootie...but he may have been a puppet, not a cartoon...or he may have been both. I'm sure I must have seen Warner Bros. cartoons and Disney staples like Mickey and Donald...but they are my earliest memories of cartoons.

Glad Kismet is doing better. Hope he's feeling better, too.

Good Kismet news.

Before I could toddle I was a Mickey Mouse fan through seeing the early black and white cartoon GULLIVER MICKEY which was one of the films my father owned which he would regularly show on his projector. The first cartoon I saw theatrically was Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND on first release in 1951 but I was only 6 and have only a hazy memory of seeing it (obviously I've seen the film again since then). My favorite characters were Disney's Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy - yes, I have all those Disney Treasures DVD sets! I also loved Popeye and would rush home from school in order to be in time to watch his shows on TV (no school run in those days!).

I'm up after eight hours of sleep. I think I can be jogging by ten to get that out of the way before the temperature reaches what I'm told will be 100 degrees.

The mention of ALICE IN WONDERLAND recalls to me a lady I sat next to at one of Ray Courts' autograph shows. Her name was Virginia Davis, and she was the original "Alice".
Apparently before he created Mickey Mouse (or perhaps it was at the same time), Walt Disney did a series of live action/cartoon shorts about a little girl (Alice), who appeared with cartoon characters.
I've never seen one of them. Has anybody here?
-
I've never seen the old Alice you mention, Druxy. But it reminded me of the time I interviewed Sheldon Harnick. We were talking about the Shoestring Revues and the great "Medea in Disneyland" sketch in particular. In it, Harnick imagined what Medea would be like if Disney had done her story. Bea Arthur played Medea's fairy godmother who quotes from the volume "Particles of Articles from Historical Oracles." Anyway, that sketch was inspired by the 1950s version of Alice, which he was not too fond of.
-
DR Robin, I was also a huge fan of THE WACKY RACES. I picked up the DVD set when Big Lots had it for $3. I knew it wasn't something that was likely to be as amusing now that I am an adult, but I enjoyed for the nostolgia. I picked up sets for my grand neice and nephew and they loved it.
Of course Penelope Pitstop was my favorite of the races, and I had her die cast car when I was a kid.

I have no memorye of my first cartoons, but I do have early memories of the HASHIMOTO series of cartoons, a Japanese mouse from Terrytoons. Very likely it got me started on my early childhood interest in all things Japanese.

DR Druxy, I have seen some of the old silent Alice in Wonderland shorts that Virginia Davis was in. They were amusing, as I recall. I met her at the Ray Courts Show also, as we were checking in at the front desk at the same time. She was very sweet. We chatted later about doing an interview in the future, but she was at that time taking care of her very ill husband. Sadly she died a few years later.
In the 1940s, she appeared in many films in uncredited chorus girl/dancer roles. She was very pretty!
Here she is in 1924 as Alice

I wonder if all you DRs are aware of some nifty DVD releases coming up, for instance several volumes of the TV show HULLABALOO are available next week:

The complete series of the 1950s television show HARBOR COMMAND will be out on Sept. 17th...

Those two sets do look fine. Thank you, DR MBarnum.
Okay, break's over. Back to work.

Seven of the Alice shorts are included in the "Walt Disney Treasures: Disney Rarities" DVD. Frankly I found them a complete bore! The DVD includes an interview Leonard Maltin did with Virginia Davis.

James Best is married to a dear friend of mine from LACC days, Dorothy Collier.

The Time Travelers is really worth getting. I haven't seen it for many years but remember it as an original and surprisingly bleak film.

I loved the "Alice" shorts myself. I found them both primitive and charming, simultaneously.
That's how I feel about early animation in general. When I watch a Felix the Cat or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit 'toon, it's like watching a new art form develop right in front of my eyes.
And since no one else said it, I'm going to...Disney had better animation, but Warner Bros. had the jokes. And that makes Warnertoons stand the test of time, whereas Disneytoons are quaint relics. Both are great, but Bugs wins over Mickey any day.
-
I have most of those films in previous releases....but those sets look nice.
-
Okay, I'd better check those contents, too. I know I have The Brain That Wouldn't Die. Will do that tonight. Got to run now and go watch a movie at a friend's house, the one with the good projection system. Later!
-
A great double bill would be The brain That Wouldn't Die and They Saved Hitler's Brain

Tickets for Rocky the musical go on sale Sunday!

I feel as if that last comment should be accompanied by Sing Song's tagline about wearing polyester without irony.

Still on Page 3? This will not do. No, no, no.

I've been reading about the plot to execute Ann Boleyn and watching tv, so it's been a very lazy day.
-
Thinking about dinner. Tomorrow, I may have to walk to the bank for some cash.
-
I have nothing else to report.
-
Are you reading "Wolf Hall," Elmore?
-
DR Mike's video clip from Baby reminded me of something I'd blocked out. The staging conceit for the original production: curtains.
Not your ordinary run-of-the-mill curtains, mind you. Dancing curtains. Oh yes: these long, ugly, gauzy curtains that were automated on overhead tracks. These curtains did curly-cues and do-si-dos and somersaults and handstands. And they barely ever stopped moving. And they were NOISY. I mean, I get it - the book for the musical had a lot of scenes in rapidly changing interiors, and the curtains were a way to define the spaces. But they practically drowned out the show.
Oh, and did I mention that they were ugly? :)
-
I have most of those films in previous releases....but those sets look nice.
And they are only $5 per set on Amazon.com! I ordered mine today.
There are also a couple of Spaghetti Western 4 movie sets for the same price.
-
Are you reading "Wolf Hall," Elmore?
No. Alison Weir's The Lady In The Tower. I've read nearly all of her books on the clan of Henry VIII.

This should get us to Page 4!

Sing through for the Heights show this evening. Pretty straight forward, I foresee no real issues. That feels great.

Back from a fun Q&A at LACC - really fun, actually. Then picked up one package, then had some chicken tenders. Now I'm home, the day is gone and I have to finesse notes and get them on their merry way.

It is raining, thundering, and lightening outside. It is surprisingly dark for only 4:30 in the afternoon!

After seeing Blue Jasmine I looked up Sally Hawkins on IMDB. I had thought she was British but couldn't believe she could have done such a great American accent. It turns out she IS British. She's great in the movie.
And I can't say enough about Cate Blanchett's performance.
-
Oh, dear DRs, I have not been sitting here like so much fish all day, just forgot to log out when I went to the kitchen to prepare and eat lunch. After that, I went out to do several hours of errands. Came home, took a nap, ate dinner and just returned to my study to make a couple of phone calls.
-
Sally Hawkins was almost painful to watch in "Happy-Go-Lucky" as someone who is so perky you want to slap her. What an incredible performance. Glad she has another good part.

Ooh, Ginny, I envy the nap part.

I woke up feeling like the proverbial truck hit me. It was just one of those nights when the bed attacks, and the morning backaches are a pain in the... well... back, I guess. DR Elmore - one word: TempurPedic
Richard used to have awful back problems and I had spasms from time to time. We bought a TempurPedic mattress in 1999 and have had very few problems since. Pricey, but worth every penny.

Question for west coasters: we are looking for new lamps for our bedside tables and want them to have electrical outlets in the base (like you sometimes see in hotels). I've found some possibilities online at a company called Lamps Plus, whose stores seem to be concentrated in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Has anyone dealt with this company? Recommendations?

TOD 2: From the Saturday morning cartoons, which I forgot to include in my list, I always loved Rocky and Bulwinkle, with Fractured Fairy Tales and that droll Edward Everett Horton narration. Also loved Underdog, but seeing those years later was something of a letdown.

Umm...ditto?

I really like Daffy Duck AND Donald Duck...Bugs Bunny AND Mickey Mouse, etc. I don't specifically have a favorite, though.

As soon as the Check from Philadelphia clears, I'm ordering a new mattress.
When I moved into my condo almost 7 years ago (October 14!), my sister's boyfriend gave me his not-very-old-at-all queen-sized mattress because he just bought himself a California king bed. My sister had a memory foam mattress pad topper that she didn't like at all, so she gave that to me. I had never used a topper, but I thought why not...free is good. I fell in love with it instantly and can't imagine sleeping without it...unless I have to...which fortunately, isn't often.
This weekend when I washed my sheets and blankets and things, I turned the mattress around. Because of the topper, it still looks and feels practically brand new. The topper has prevented the mattress from sinking and I'm sure that it'll last for quite a few years more. :)

I've been accessing HHW from my Ipad and yesterday I wanted to post a link for something from Youtube, but for some reason there was no share tab that I see when I use my laptop so I am using a regular computer right now.
FROM BABY
Here is Liz Callaway doing the Act One Finale: The Story Goes On. This is a video from the audience. But it is a chance to see her do it live.
I think Liz's version is the best

I LOVE Liz and this song!

KISMET Update:
He is not urinating blood any as of this morning. If he is still okay by tonight I will put him back into Doggy Day Camp and let him have a regualr room again on Friday.
~~~Continued Get Well Vibes for DD Kismet!!~~~
And now, I must be going. Theater Artists Olympia is having a meeting to discuss fund raisers. We definitely want to do The Rocky Horror Show next year and we need some money. So, discussions are starting. :)
Be back later!
Thank you, all. The bank is hopefully handling the situation. It appears, though, that it will take a few days before the questioned charge of $1,277 is removed from my account and the money is restored.
Post #125? Oh dear.
-
I went to sleep early, guess I missed the ball in Times Square dropping at midnight to herald in the new year. :)
Have they picked up all of the garbage in Times Square?
-
DR TCB - very sorry to hear that you have been ill. I hope that you are feeling much better PRONTO, and offer ~ ~ ~ VIBES ~ ~ ~ to that effect!
Thank you, sling blade.
-
Vibes and hugs for TCB and Elmore. Hope you both are feeling better soon.
Thanks John.
My boss got a call from his wife last night before leaving work. She was in tears. There was a fox in their chimney and she didn't know what to do.
Well, the fox turned out to be a raccoon and there's like a whole family of them living in there. And no one was available to take care of it.
I don't think his laughter or his threat not to come home until she dealt with it has won him any points.
On facebook, I see they pushed a chair in front of the fireplace and are leaving it until Animal Control drops by some time today to take care of it and offer then a $600 bill.
Although it's 115 outside, I'd have built a fire.
Rodents gone; dinner cooked. Best of both worlds.
Thursday.
Feel better vibes for DR TCB.
Nice to see DR RLP's posting last night.
Thanks, Jack.
Oh, I hate to play straightman to you, Jack, but have you seen Harvey?
-
I have absolutely nothing beyond knowing that it is Thursday morning. It IS Thursday--isn't it?
Nope. Monday.
-
Well, got a call almost as I hit work that someone had hijacked my debit card. A $1,200+ purchase had been made at a Best Buy and more charges were being attempted this morning. Ugh.
You didn't use that debit card at any of those high-class BBQ places you visited last weekend?
He's still dealing with the raccoon in the house. The animal defense league or whoever is taking care of the animal can't get there until tomorrow. In the meantime, someone I work with has created a Facebook page for Johnny the Raccoon. (I'm glad my boss has a sense of humor about this.)
It was at a gas station next to church. That was the only place I used it.
I saw on the news this evening about the terrible car accident in the UK. Over 130 cars were involved. The reporter was saying that low hanging fog was being blamed. Well, I saw the video from the scene of the accident, and it was obvious that the cars were all traveling on the wrong side of the road.
DR Robin, I was also a huge fan of THE WACKY RACES. I picked up the DVD set when Big Lots had it for $3. I knew it wasn't something that was likely to be as amusing now that I am an adult, but I enjoyed for the nostolgia. I picked up sets for my grand neice and nephew and they loved it.
Of course Penelope Pitstop was my favorite of the races, and I had her die cast car when I was a kid.
I have no memorye of my first cartoons, but I do have early memories of the HASHIMOTO series of cartoons, a Japanese mouse from Terrytoons. Very likely it got me started on my early childhood interest in all things Japanese.
And as an adult, didn't you paint your automobile the exact same colors
I wonder if all you DRs are aware of some nifty DVD releases coming up, for instance several volumes of the TV show HULLABALOO are available next week:
I always liked SHINDIG better,
But Michael Bennett and Donna McKechnie were on Hullabaloo. (I always watched Soul Train.)
Now to figure out how I'm going to get to the other end of the state tomorrow for a different kind of barbecue. It looks like a six-hour drive each way. Ugh.
-
I have most of those films in previous releases....but those sets look nice.
And they are only $5 per set on Amazon.com! I ordered mine today.
There are also a couple of Spaghetti Western 4 movie sets for the same price.
I am calling the biography of you that I am writing The Brain That Would Not Live.
The way you are always talking about it, I thought he was The Brain That Would Not Leave.
Just sat on my couch and went out like a light for about forty minutes.
Question for west coasters: we are looking for new lamps for our bedside tables and want them to have electrical outlets in the base (like you sometimes see in hotels). I've found some possibilities online at a company called Lamps Plus, whose stores seem to be concentrated in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Has anyone dealt with this company? Recommendations?
Never heard of them. Sorry, Ginny.
We are having a horrific storm here tonight. Heavy rain, thunder and lightening, and by tomorrow, possible flooding.
-
Okay, one more.
-
Six!
-
Well, no one can say we didn't get to page six, but plenty of people will be able to say we didn't get to page seven.
Good evening. I left at the crack of dawn and just got home a short while ago. Had a great day.
:o Oh my goodness!! I haven't seen this much rain in quite a while, BUT there probably has been more lightning and thunder in the last five hours than I think I've seen in the last 20 years! It's amazing!
-
The rain has been tapering off over the last hour or so. At work today, someone had heard that a motorcyclist on the freeway had been hit by lightning. HERE (http://www.theolympian.com/2013/09/05/2706189/motorcyclist-struck-by-lightning.html) is a short article about it.
Go to bed, Vixmom!!!
DITTO!! AND DON'T JUST GO TO BED, GO TO SLEEP!!
Ginny, there's a Lamps Plus near me - I've bought stuff there and it's been fine.
