Title: CLOSE HARMONY
Post by: bk on October 23, 2013, 12:44:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had close harmony, and now it is time for you to post until the harmonized cows come home.

Good morning, all! Payback for a good night's sleep two nights ago was a restless and sleepless night last night. I'm guessing that around 2:00 today I will want a nap.

No plans at all today. I have to book an eye appointment for January, then try to get a cancellation before then. We'll see how that goes.

More coffee.

And Call Me Savage, also from Fade Out, Fade In, was used 2 years later in Hallelujah, Baby under the title Witches Brew.

There are milestones. There are millstones. ...

There are good stones and bad stones
 and curbstones and gladstones
and touchstones and such stones as them.
[Such as Them-uh]

There are big stones and small stones
and grind stones and gall stones,
but Goldstone is a gem!

There are milestones, there are mill stones.
 There's a cherry, there's a yellow, there's a blue.
But we don't want any old stone,
 only Goldstone will do!
 Moon stones, sun stones.
We all scream for one stone.
 Mr. Goldstone we love you!
 Goldstone!

I'm up - I slept until nine-thirty, exactly eight hours.  Then the helper came by and got invoices and stuff.  I had to send some mp3s to cast members, then put in the works a single version of This Christmas - we have a radio promotion guy who wants to get airplay for that song, and I'm all about that.

I think I'll go to Jerry's as today is chicken corn chowder day - so I'll have a cup of that and a ham and Swiss - then later maybe a snack of some sort.  I think today I'll try an experiment and not leave until about four-thirty and try a different route.

Lastly, but certainly not leastly, one of my all time favorite Bollywood actors, Randhawa (full name Sardara Singh Randhawa), who starred in TARZAN AND KING KONG along with numerous spy films, mythologicals, and action films of the 1960s passed away a couple of days back.

Have yet to find a news story on it, but his death was confirmed by a couple of Facebook friends who are related to him.

Hope you warm up fast, Jennifer.

It was around mid to high 40s. Sort of sunny which was good. I was wearing a long sleeved t-shirt, a thin long sleeved shirt on top of that, and a sweater on top of that. :(

I like to dress in layers so i can take the top one off when I get warmed up. Unfortunately the top layer did not come off. But it wasn't too bad. I think tomorrow I will wear tights under my leggings though.

I'm kind of E&T today, mostly for the digging of two five-foot-long trenches eighteen inches deep, which in Connecticut is no laughing matter.  The trenches are for the electrical lines and the gas lines that will go to the generator.  Most of the hardest work is done now.  I think.  I hope.  I pray.

And now I must get me ready to go see MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG.

I have dug no trenches today, but I did a few trenches.  I had some chicken corn chowder (a cup) and a ham and Swiss for lunch, then the bit of pumpkin bundt cake left over from last night.  No jog today and I'll probably leave in about ninety minutes and try a new route.

Then, I called the corner bodega and ordered some milk and other items. The milk and the cola were correct but nothing else was. What the fat hell is going on tonight?

Bruce, you could take Olympic to Bundy and then down to Venice. Centinela turns into Bundy, but it's confusing if you don't know the way. Olympic and Venice both move well. If you use Overland you'll miss about half of the Culver City eateries, but many of them are too trendy for you, anyway. I could name several good Indian restaurants, but I won't.

I told some friends about your revue, but couldn't find anything on the theatre's website about it. Dates would be helpful. Did you say it opens Dec 15?

Thanks for the info, DRs Ben and Elmore!  I will investigate...

There used to be (I haven't looked in years) ads in the New York Playbills for limos from Newark to Midtown for the unheard of price of $30.00 or $35.00.  It was amazing, and just about the same price, if not less, than a cab.  Nothing like arriving at the Milford Plaza in a stretch limo.

Back from Merrily. I haven't seen it on stage since the original Broadway production in 1981. It has been reworked many times over the years. I still think it is an inherently problematic piece, but they did make a good case for it. And people keep trying because Sondheim's score is so good. I thought the three principle actors were excellent.

I loved it. I once saw it with Ann Morrison directing the original script. It didn't work.

The version used tonight was very bitter in a Chekovian way that did work for me. I choked up a couple of times in the first act and the tears came when Franklin started "Our Time" in the last scene.

I have more respect with what became of the script (whether Furth did the further work or Lapine, I don't know, but Lapine was not mentioned in the credits). And I still don't care for the added Sondheim songs. Except for Frank's big solo, they don't work as well as the originals.

I think that we're growing as a food town, and people are starting to appreciate that. Actually, the downtown area is beginning to attract a lot of millennials who are eating out more and more, and the more they spend money, the better things get. So, let them spend some of that on our book.

Back from rehearsal - I'm so ready to start staging and directing - I hate teaching rehearsals but have to be there for the arrangement and key choices.  Lloyd wasn't with us and our sub really hadn't seen any of this music before, so it was slow going but we got through everything we needed to at least to set keys, and I did figure out four of the put-togethers and how they function, so that's good.

I've never seen any version.  I really enjoyed this.  I thought that Frank wasn't as much of an ass as I thought that he should be in the first scene (but probably just a little too attractive ;)).  And the guy playing Charlie never opened his mouth very much.  I don't know why, but that always bugs me.  Otherwise, I thought that the acting and singing were all very good.  I especially loved Gussie.  The costumes for the chorus really reflected the time change.  The leads, especially Frank, didn't seem to change too much.  Frank wore a tux shirt and pants practically throughout the whole show.
Title: Re: CLOSE HARMONY
Post by: George on October 23, 2013, 11:56:38 PM
The set was very small, so there wasn't a lot that could be done with the camera work.  BK, you'd love that there were a lot of shots that lasted more than 4 seconds.  You really got a chance to focus on the people and the (minimal) dances.  The only time that they had quick shots back and forth between the actors was during "Opening Doors," when they each have solo lines right after each other.
Title: Re: CLOSE HARMONY

I was surprised most by Jenna Russell as Mary. I loathe her artificial, pretentious and sloooooooow sound on the "Sunday in the Park ..." revival recording, but she really didn't hit a false note in "Merrily."

In the opening scene, she spoke very deliberately and slowly.  At first, I wasn't sure if it was because that's the way she was going to portray the character or if that's just the way she was going to portray the character as drunk.  But when she started singing, she had no trouble with the quick lyrics.  Fortunately, it wasn't a problem after that first scene.

Jane, it is not a pocket camera. It is rather large. I can't take a picture of it because, well, I would be using it to take the picture.

You could take a picture of it in a mirror.  You could aim it so that you're not in the picture.

What was also very nice is that the sound (at least, in the theater where I saw it) was at a very comfortable level.  It never got very loud, nor too soft to hear.  I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect of it.

I thought at times that some of the staging was a bit static.  They just stood there and sang at each other, but probably with the small set, they couldn't do a lot of movement.  Just a thought.

I haven't heard if it's going to be released on Blu-ray or DVD or if DigitalTheatre.com (http://www.digitaltheatre.com/) is going to release it as a digital download.  I hope that it's released.
