Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Black, Green and Purple, and now it is time for you to post until the colorful cows come home.

Yesterday's Thanksgiving was fairly traditional for us.  My parents, my sister, my niece, my sister's boyfriend and I feasted at my parents' house.  My mom made turkey (which I don't really like) and my sister and niece are vegans, so we all had different things. ;) It was all very good, though.

The pecan pie that I made was quite good.  My mom made a cheesecake and my sister made a vegan pumpkin pie...again, all good. :D

Thanksgiving at Milla's place was quite wonderful, and she's such a great hostess.  It was our first time seeing her renovated place, and the space is really well-used, and looks and feels luxurious.  And the food was terrific.  (Skip brought some food also, including his deviled eggs ad chocolate pecan pie.)

And so glad Cilla, that your Thanksgiving turned out so much better than you'd expected.

Coffee.  Couple of clementines.

It would sure be nice not to eat anything today!  :)  I know that isn't entirely realistic, but I will try to be careful.

No Black Friday insanity for me, thankyouverymuch.  Sheer madness.  Count me out.

I will be making my way to a Barnes & Noble to pick up the new and outrageous (9 Blu-rays and 18 DVDs = 27 - count'em - discs) Zatoichi box set from Criterion while their 50%-off sale is still on, but my travels today should keep me relatively isolated from the INSANE crowds.  I'll expect a little traffic, to be sure, but hopefully nothing to write home about.  I'm not so certain they'd be interested in reading a missive about my traffic adventures, anyway, now that I think of it.

The main part of the meal was largely traditional -- turkey, stuffing both in and out of the turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, homemade whole cranberry sauce, steamed broccoli, and tossed romaine/radicchio salad.  Because there was an Italian contingent, one of whom doesn't like turkey and cranberries, there was also a pasta course (cavatelli) that included a selection of meats (sausage, pepperoni, and a variation on what I think is called involtini) all cooked in a wonderful homemade marinara, and garlic bread.  There was also a fairly extensive appetizer selection with stuffed clams, potato croquettes, antipasto, and I don't even remember what else.  Beaujolais Nouveau accompanied the meal.  Desserts were pumpkin pie, Dutch apple pie, strawberry rhubarb pie, with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, and coffee.

Oh my god, that sounds like a lot of food.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at my brother's house - there were the Vixfamily three plus my parents and my SIL's sister and husband and my SIL's parents so a small group -

We had Turkey - which we all like, bread stuffing with cranberries and apples and sausage stuffing, greenbean casserole, corn, my favorite cauliflower casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, rolls, turnips and gravy.

Dessert was apple pie, pumpkin pie, banana cream pie, chocolate pudding pie and vanilla ice cream

My contribution was wine, beer , and rolls, and driving my folks ... so I got off lightly this year -  I hung around and helped clean up at the end to make up for that

Good morning, all! I slept in: no matter how tired I was when I got home, I could not get to sleep. I watched a bit of the TNT "Castle" marathon, read a bit, and finally dozed off.

Today, I've got to finish up some Moross work, drag out the full scores of ROBERTA and start marking my edits.

DR cillaliz, I'm glad your sister-in-law came down on your side over your brother's aqua madness, and I'm happy you had a good day.

To work! More coffee, first!

This stuffing was a combination of dried French and rye breads with sage sausage, dried cranberries, fresh herbs, and all the other usual savory stuff.  I'm a stuffing freak, and made this one myself.  Everyone loved it, but I thought the outside-the-bird portion was a lot better than the stuffed portion; the latter became mushier and less appealing than I like.  But this was my first time trying that, so I don't know if that's because I'd moistened it too much beforehand, or whatever.

Friday morning greetings!  We had a great day yesterday.  Everybody kept complimenting me on the meal, but the only cooking I did was one of the turkeys with stuffing and Shellie beans simmered with a ham bone.  The others contributed everything else, including:

The other turkey with gluten-free cornbread stuffing from Rob & Mary Linda
Mashed potatoes from Mary Linda
Corn casserole and dinner rolls from sister-in-law Kathy
Dumplings from Mary Linda's mother Linda
Roasted root vegetables from our friend Betty
Cranberry fluff from Mary Linda's sister Julianne
Cranberry relish from Mary Linda's grandmother Norma
Pumpkin pies - one with GF crust - from Mary Linda and Linda
Apple pie from Norma
Fruitcake made by my sister Nancy
Birthday mini-cupcakes from my niece Laura

All preceded by appetizers from Laura and Eva, my nephew Mark's significant other, and accompanied by more bottles of wine than I can count.  It was the kind of party that caused me to find a sparkling wine cork in the tub when I went to take my shower this morning!

The evening ended with a little excitement after half the guests had left and the others were gathering up their belongings to leave.  I had an encore of the malady that sent me to the ER in New York two weeks ago.  Paramedic Rob was still here and took good care of me.  After all the guests had left I sat quietly for a while and watched SHERLOCK with Richard and the nosebleed finally stopped.

We met my relatives at Cracker Barrel for breakfast at 9:30 this morning and saw Mark and Eva off for home in Michigan.  She has to work tomorrow and they have to get there before 5pm to get their dog Tama from his "spa," before they get charged for another night.  It's called "Bed 'n' Biscuit" and cost more per night than the hotel where Mark and Eva stayed while they were here.

Love a Cracker Barrel breakfast.

As long as it includes eggs, bacon, ham with red-eye gravy, hash browns, those little casserole things, toast, a good pot of coffee, and...

and...

Well, I've never tried pancakes or waffles or french toast there, so can't comment on those.

Hello, everyone.

I woke up to both rain and a sore throat. I had toyed with the idea a few days ago to spend a couple hours today exploring a neighborhood of small shops. Well, I wasn't really in the mood, anyway. I'm so NOT a shopper. I buy as much as I can online. I do have a bit of Christmas shopping to do yet, but there's time.

I have plenty of food here, including soup and tea and lemons, plus DVDs and books, so I'm fine on that score. I think this is the nuisance virus I've had off and on for a couple weeks. Irritating, but not serious. I just wish it would leave for good.

Greetings, all!

I hope everyone had a delicious day yesterday, and are wisely staying away from the madhouses that are Black Hole Friday.

Nothing in my DVR today, but last night watched Red 2. More action than the first, some perhaps over the top (then again it's based on a comic), but between Malkovitch's mad man and the pros intentionally underplaying, it was fun.

I do have the new Downton to catch up on, Episodes 5 through 8. But my Kritzerland music comes first.  ;)

Back from being coifed by my wonderful Teddy.  Then I went to Jerry's for a bite to eat - apparently the people of Studio City didn't stuff themselves enough last night and don't have a ton of leftovers so that all of them, ALL of them decided they just had to have lunch at Jerry's - a line waiting all the way out the door.  Needless to say, I got back in the motor car and came home.  Color me disgusted by the idiots who live in my neighborhood - disloyal twits who only come to Jerry's two or three times a year and only on days like this.  So, no food for me until two-thirty or three and if it's still crowded then I'll just go to Gelson's and get some stuff from there, or I'll go to the Studio Cafe.

What other time of the year, could you turn on your car radio and hear Mel Torme, then Nat King Cole, followed by The Carpenters, and ending with Michael Buble.

I'm currently in shock over these Civic commercials where Michael Bolton appears in a snowy scene, warbles something unintelligible for about 16 bars and then we get a car commercial.

I just declared all of the companies from whom I've purchased online and who continue to send me offers as "junk mail." Every email from them is now going directly into the trash. After the Christmas madness, i'll decide which ones to take off the list.

The mail finally arrived at 6:30pm and the check I hoped to deposit today will not be deposited until Monday. Goddam!

Went back to Jerry's at two-twenty and got the one available booth.  It thinned out five minutes later, only to fill up again five minutes after that - having checked out five other local restaurants that were completely bereft of people, it's even more baffling.  Then I picked up a couple of packages, then I did some banking, now I'm in for the rest of the day and evening.

Turnips and gravy?

it ain;t Thanksgiving  unlessen ya gots turnips and gravy!

My dad has an ancient computer that takes what seems like weeks to load any images.  I've been listening to family members say for years that they are going to get him set up with a new one.  But it never seems to happen. Today I told him to sit down and we were going to go on Amazon and computer shop. All he does is internet and email and a few photos.    We found one, and in checking out, I discovered he hasn't used the gift certificates we've been giving him for years.   He had over $181.00 in gift certificates credit!  He just wanted a basic desktop, so he's got a new one coming for $148!  That price was enough for him to get very excited about it.   Me too!

... but I thought the outside-the-bird portion was a lot better than the stuffed portion; the latter became mushier and less appealing than I like.  But this was my first time trying that, so I don't know if that's because I'd moistened it too much beforehand, or whatever.

You can't put very much broth in the stuffing before you put it in the bird because it absorbs a lot of the yummy turkey liquid as it cooks inside the turkey.

What a busy day. I slept in until 8:30 -- unheard of for me unless I am ill. I woke up with just enough time to get dressed and make a cup of coffee before a knock on the door revealed two young ladies who were very excited to be helping to cook a turkey.

Mae-Ling made the stuffing while Wae-Ling and I wrestled with the turkey. Wae-Ling thinks it is the coolest thing EVER to get her hands inside the turkey to pull out the neck and giblets. She set those to cooking and then stuffed the turkey with Mae-Ling's dressing. While it cooked, we watched "The Music Man."

When dinner was served, Mae-Ling only ate mashed potatoes, corn casserole, and apple pie. Wae-Ling ate all the turkey and dressing and gravy she could hold.

Me too!

Funny he had all those gift certificates and great you finally put them to good use.

Thanksgiving dinner, for me, was cheese and crackers followed by a bowl of soup.  All accompanied by a fine cranberry juice and Diet Sierra Mist cocktail!

now my heart hurts

Why?  I turned down three invitations so I could just sit back and relax.  I did manage to get dressed, but just barely.

I think you were wise to stay home.  I was rather sick last night from eating too much and I didn't get much sleep.

Ok I feel a little better -it made me sad to think we were feasting and you were eating crackers and sipping cranberry juice

Cranberry and Sierra Mist is the only thing I drink other than water and coffee.

no fresh squeezed apple cider?

Nope, I have kind of gotten away from apple juice or apple cider.  It bothers my stomach sometimes.

I also have trouble with juice.

Did their father join you for dinner?

I think it's the blood thinners.  Last time I saw my doctor he talked to me about a new medication that doesn't require the frequent blood tests and doesn't have the dietary restrictions.  We're gonna continue that conversation...

Wednesday morning we left early and drove up to Portland stopping at this big discount mall called Woodburn.  We never made it to the Levi store as two hours was more than we wanted to be there and Keith couldn't try on one more pair of pants.

He did well, in total he got three pairs of pants and two shirts.  I got two blouses though one will need altering so I'm a bit nervous I won't regret my purchase.

I wish we had time to stop in Salem but we made it to Portland with just enough time to go to Nordstrom's where I got a much needed new coat and the Bobbie Brown tinted moisturizer that I first purchased in NY when DR's Ginny, Cilla, & Danise (I hope I didn't leave anyone out) and I had our shinny makeover.  Keith got much needed gloves.

We dropped our shopping bag off at the hotel where Keith called Mother's Bistro and reserved the last table for two people.  The food & service there is always excellent and I don't know why we haven't gone in a long while.  http://www.mothersbistro.com/

I forgot, before dinner we had wine in hotel lobby for guests and I had an special treat as there was someone from Voodoo Donuts.  I got a chocolate/chocolate donut.  I don't think it was freshly baked but hit the spot and I only ate half of it.

On the way home from Portland today we had to take a detour to avoid the traffic going to the Woodburn shops delaying our drive home about half an hour.  Had we not taken the detour we would have been stuck in traffic 1 1/2 to 2 hours for all the people getting off at the Woodburn exit.

Good night, all.

Must be up at 5:30 a.m. and head out to a barbecue place that is only open on Saturdays, starting at 8 a.m. The woman who is the pitmaster  is 79 years old and she doesn't want the barbecue to interfere with her day job. Still, it's supposed to be one of the four best places in the state, and the deadline for this book is fast approaching. Not that we're going to make the deadline.

I'm watching Barbra right now!  I didn't realize that it would be a pledge drive.  Oh, well.  I had to pause for a while, so now I can fast-forward through those segments...at least, until I ketchup with the broadcast. ;)

I didn't realize that it would be for the whole month.

I just watched "Ghost Story" with Craig Wasson, Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman.  It was very interesting.  It's nice to see a horror movie that's not a just a slasher film.  The music also was very good and not just "mood music" to scare.
