Title: THE CONUNDRUM OF TIME
Post by: bk on December 30, 2013, 12:11:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the conundrum of time, and now it is time for you to post until the conundrum of cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

The first song that I thought of was "Out There" by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."  I actually sang this song as part of a vocal workshop about 10 years ago or so. :)

And then the very next song that came into my head was "Lesbian, Butch, Dyke," from BK's very own "The First Nudie Musical."

No kidding! :D

Good morning, all! I am up earlier than usual because I have physical therapy this morning at 9pm. I'll leave here around 8:15.

When I return, I may nap a bit before I return to Trumpet 4.

Last night, I slept rather poorly, but I had a fantastic dream about a high school reunion I attended and its aftermath that was a great premise for a movie or sitcom. God knows what I can do with it.  Maybe I'll send Joe Keenan an email.

Finished this book the other day and would highly recommend it to anyone who works in the theater, especially with kids. The teacher at the center of it is a great inspiration. And it's interesting what projects he can schedule for students of all backgrounds to participate in. It was on USA Today's 10 best list of the year, which is where I first learned about it.

I think the cover photo is from his high school version of "Spring Awakening," which should tell you that he's not always taking the easy route with his production choices.

I went to Trader Joe's since we have almost nothing in the house except for frozen dinners. It's 41 degrees here in Manhattan but the temperature is supposed to drop later in the week. Not to Iowa or Minnesota lows but to the very low 30s and even into the 20s. We will just stay in and get re-acclimated to the apartment and perhaps set up our new 32 inch flat screen television (a gift from the in-laws). We don't have a Roku box but Rose (Anthony's mother) said she was going to get one for us. She gave one to Philip (Anthony's father and Rose's husband). She (Rose) loves the Roku, Phil, not so much. It's not that he doesn't like it but he's a very settled man and he watches what he watches. He doesn't want to have to browse through different channels and make choices (she didn't ask him if he wanted one, she wanted one and decided to get it for him). I foresee possible conflict in the near future regarding Roku!

So many great songs.

The first one that comes to mind is "Sentimental Moments" from WE'RE NO ANGELS.

Of course, there's also "Secret Love," Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" and "The Shadow of Your Smile," written by clients Paul Francis Webster and (the first two) Sammy Fain, but I'm prejudiced toward those.

She also sang it on an album before she did the movie of Cabaret. It was written for an unproduced musical called Golden Gate.

Wow, conflicting information in Wikipedia, whoda thought it  ::)

The article I linked to the first time says Kaye Ballard but the original Wiki page I had meant to link to gave the Golden Gate information. The first Wiki page relates to Cabaret the film and the second Wiki page which I will link to now relates to the Broadway (and other) stage productions and mentions the song being written for Golden Gate

Cabaret Stage Productions Maybe This Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabaret_%28musical%29)

Here's the relevant quote in case you don't want to travel to Wiki again

"The song "Mein Herr", which was written for the 1972 film, and "Maybe This Time" (an earlier song of Kander and Ebb's, written for the unproduced musical Golden Gate) were included in the 1998 revival. In this revival, "Mein Herr" would replace "The Telephone Song", which already had a small appearance before "Don't Tell Mama". "Maybe This Time" replaced "Why Should I Wake Up?", and was sung by Sally in her own personal reflection (both were included in the 2012 London revival). Previously, in the 1987 revival, a new song was written for Cliff entitled "Don't Go".

I just watched the film "A Good Day to Die Hard" on TV. What an awful film. The constant shaky cam and use of zoom lens (I thought constant use of that went out in the late 1970s) made it impossible to make out what was going on most of the time. No wonder it was a box office disaster.

I did not love THE SOUND OF MUSIC, but I, also, did not hate it.  The thing that I liked was that it was something different  than the usual TV fare.  The miniseries has basically disappeared, the made-for-TV-movie is gone except for the Lifetime Channel, the Hallmark Channel, and a few other specialty channels.  Half of the prime time TV schedule is made up of reality shows and musical competitions.  It has indeed become a vast wasteland.

So for any of the big networks (if you can still call them that) to produce a live production of a Broadway musical it is worth cheering about.  And, in addition, instead of producing XANADU or LEGALLY BLONDE; they pick one of the classic musicals by one of the great Broadway musical teams of all time.  I understand BK's dislike of the diector's work, but for me I am just thrilled that they did it; and next year they will do another live musical.  And who knows where we may go from there.

Original lyrics were:

Maybe this time I'll be lucky
Maybe this time she'll stay
Maybe this time for the first time
The song won't go to Kaye

She pronounced her last name wrong, though.  As Barbra often points out, the second syllable is pronounced like "sand on the beach!"

I remember being surprised that "Maybe This Time" was in the film version of Cabaret since I had a recording of Liza from a few years prior on which it appeared.

Tonight at 8 p.m EST on TCM is my second favorite Deanna Durbin movie:  It Started With Eve.....although I like almost ALL of her movies......

It Started With Eve was later remade as a Sandra Dee vehicle I'd Rather Be Rich with Maurice Chevalier in the original Charles Laughton role....the remake also features Robert Goulet and Andy Williams and Hermione Gingold....but I still prefer the original....

Found 3 Smart Girls at Big Lots recently.

all the smart girls shop there

I agree, TCB

At the end of the year I'm always in the mood to toss, cull, declutter. Take your pick of terminology. I did some of that today and made a little dent in it. Lots more to do. A book lover, I've always found it difficult to cull books. It's getting easier, though. Real estate is just too expensive. Many of these books I know I'll never reread, so out with them! (I say that, but it reality the bag of books to donate isn't even full. It's still progress, though.)

For many years I didn't have a TV. (I don't have one now, either.) I was traveling a lot on business, working long hours, etc. When a friend took pity on me and bought me one I thought, "I'll rent some of the movies I've missed over the years. I'm not interested in TV." But I was wrong. There's PBS, which had a very rich offering in Arlington/Alexandria at that time. (Sadly diminished due to budget cuts.) And there's British TV, which I've always felt was brilliant. And now I've developed a new appreciation for American TV. I really enjoy BONES, WHITE COLLAR, PERSON OF INTEREST, JUSTIFIED, and a number of other shows. I've been surprised at the high quality of these shows. I have no idea how many viewers they have relative to the reality shows. Perhaps they are the exceptions, but I've been pleasantly surprised.

Of the three different kinds in the sampler, I did like the Bordeaux Pecan the best.  I liked the vanilla walnut a little more than the chocolate walnut, but they were all good. :D

Speaking of...here's Kaye with Donna McKechnie and Roberta Peters singing "Sing For Your Supper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AImz5R8i6YY)," from the PBS special, MUSICAL COMEDY TONIGHT III, presented by Sylvia Fine Kaye.

Hey, I just realized...if Ms. Ballard married Syliva's husband, she'd be Kaye Kaye! ;)

Watching a silly bit of nonsense called "Cairo" with Jeanette MacDonald. Ethel Waters plays her maid, except when she dresses up and leads a jazz band in "Buds Won't Bud" and then reprises it with Dooley Wilson.
