Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both lean and mean, and now it is time for you to post until the lean and mean cows come home.

Good morning, gentle DRs!

Good morning, all.
I'm up too early for a Saturday but I guess I had a decent enough sleep.

Good morning, all! It is way too hot in the apartment, and I slept badly with much tossing to and fro and fro and to. As soon as I was out of bed, I turned off the radiator.
Yesterday was one of the first really good days I've had in a long, long time. I had a delightful lunch with Robert Kimball whom I'd not seen in several years. After lunch, I hobbled down 41s Street to 8th Avenue, and there was a 104 bus waiting to take me home. My newlywed friends Cathie and Alice boarded the bus at Lincoln Center, and I hadn't sen ten in a couple of years. They were heading home from a Metropolitan Opera dress rehearsal, so we had a lovely chat.
I got home, puttered about, went to market and tidied up a bit. Around 8:30 I got a wonderful phone call from Kim Criswell, and we moaned about our 2013 travails, laughed about ourselves and our friends, and two hours later we said goodnight to each other. It was a day of small pleasures where nothing went wrong, and we all need plenty of days like that to get over the really horrid and irritating ones that come far too often.
-
So, after breakfast, I have small things to accomplish: a really good vacuum of the apartment, throwing all the accumulated papers and scores into a carton and off the chairs. DR Ben and Anthony are coming to vsit, and I'm hoping that they, who are much more savvy than I in electronics, can help me with my new Blu-Ray player. I want to be sure it's working. If all goes well, I will see if my friends would like my non-regional player and, if so, send it to a good home in Chelsea.
More coffee!

Good Morning!
Glad to hear about your wonderful day Elmore, may 2104 be full of such days for you
Please give Ben and Anthony hugs from me
-
DR vixmom, have fun today at the theatre!
DR cillaliz, good news about the tree. During one of my Goodspeed jobs, either 1998 or 2004, following a hug storm, a tree fell outside the building where I was working and took down the power lines. It took a crew several hours to remove the fallen object and restore power. You made a wise decision.
DR KevinH, I like the idea of an early Feb mini-HHW assemblage during LITTLE ME.
DR MBarnum, Tony Yazbeck is much more talented than your judging-the-book-by-the-cover approach to talent can know! Here's a start:

I am off shortly.
One of the members of our congregation presented me with 3 dozen brand new blankets on Sunday
And the ladies knitting circle have made more than a hundred knitted hats . So I am going to pick them up and drop them by one of the homeless drop in shelters down at 30th street

Then I am off to see Richard III
(VERY excited!)
-
Deb, have fun at the theatre! I'm waiting to get tickets until after my Jury Duty term is over. I don't know how long I will be so I'll wait until that is over before I make plans.

Looking forward to our visit w/Dear Larry.
Glad to hear you had a nice chat w/Ms. Criswell. Did you Skype or talk on the phone? You can answer that when we get there.

It's wet in Manhattan right now but the temperature is 55 and it's supposed to be like this for the next few days.

The plan is to then meet our dear FJL and his everlovin' Skip before I pop back to the same theatre to see the same troupe play Twelfth Night

I have errands to run before our visit so I'll leave.

By all means. I'm with DR Elmore when it comes to the ticket prices, but I really want to hear this score, and if we're going to do this we'd best set ourselves to making it happen. I'd vote for one of the matinees with a meal afterwards. Anyone else?

Criterion has released a terrific 5 disc (Blu-Ray/DVD) version of IT'S A MAD (4) WORLD with many great extras. The collection contains both the restored roadshow and the general release version of the picture.
I watched the restored roadshow version last night, and I was disappointed. I really like the movie, but next time I watch it, I'll stick with the general release version.
The problem with the 30 minutes longer "restored" roadshow version is that, with one possible exception, none of the restored footage is really necessary and none of it has been color corrected, so that it's inclusion is distracting. In several cases, the picture elements are missing altogether, so we only have the sound track and production stills, while in others missing lines of dialogue are covered by subtitles. There are even a couple of shots that, apparently, come from a Chinese (?) version of the movie, complete with Chinese (?) subtitles.
The one sequence that would have been nice to have in the film is phone conversation between Spencer Tracy and Buster Keaton, which explains Keaton's purpose in the latter part of the movie. Unfortunately, the picture portion of this scene is lost, replaced by stills, so all we have is the soundtrack.
I know that many people enjoy these "restored" versions of classic films (e.g. A STAR IS BORN, LOST HORIZON) that replace missing footage with production stills, but aside from any academic benefit, I do find these reconstructions difficult to watch because they take one out of the movie.
-
Just a clarification, because I have sort of been in the loop about Mad World - there was no color correcting some of the additional footage because there is no color left to correct. They did everything they could, but those elements for those sections are completely faded and no color is retrievable beyond what's on this disc.
-
I'm up, I'm up and not ready to jog.
-
Weird dreams all night.
-
I'm not a Mad World fanatic and didn't enjoy the laserdisc with the kitchen sink cut (this new one is not that) - I saw the long roadshow version during the first four weeks of the original run (it was cut down to what's known as the general release version by Kramer at that time, so that the film 99% of the people in the world saw WAS the general release version in terms of picture) - unless you saw it during those four weeks all you ever saw was the shorter version which played the rest of the roadshow run (the only difference after that was when it left roadshow the overture, entr'acte and exit music were also cut).
-
DR Vixmom, you posts from last night had me giggling as I read them this morning!
-
I have so many things that I would like to get done today, but I just don't know where to begin.

Actually I did see it at the Cinerama Dome during its first or second week. I think it was the first movie I saw after I moved to Los Angeles.

Saturday afternoon greetings!

My fun today was presiding over the January meeting of AAUW Middletown. Our speaker was Dr. Lisa Mannix, Butler County Coroner. She was informative and personable and told us it's not as glamorous as it looks on CSI and such.

Sounds like what they did with the laserdisc release of "1776," which I really enjoyed.

Where in tarnation...? We're averaging an hour, hour and a half, between posts.
I'm beginning to think it's a weekend, or some day in which people are having fun ... or something.

Hello, everyone.
I'm taking a little break, then some cleaning and a walk are in order.

How's that for fun?

And the word of the day is: WAMBLE!
What a great word! And I don't even know what it means--I just like the sound of it. Miranda Hart would, too.
-
Good morning, gentle DRs!
And what about the rest of us, huh?
-
Had a small breakfast (in the next booth, Tom Wopat), did some banking and then had three people rehearsing - our female trio that's doing Fugue for Tinhorns, the beautiful Jean Louisa Kelly - we got along so well I think she'll do episode one of season three's Outside the Box - and then Bruce Vilanch and Barry Pearl who will stop the show cold.
-
Now I have two hours before the kids arrive. So, time to write. I did futz and finesse before I left and wrote a half a page.
-
Looks like DR Elmore will have two great days in a row. And one for Vixmom, as well.

DR Ben and Anthony just left after a wonderful visit that rushed by. I am now all caught up on their whirlwind trip to Wisconsin and Minnesota, which sounds like so much fun, and I have a working non-regional Blu-Ray player showing me gorgeous pictures.

Thanks. I knew that I had to at least deal with the portion that was about to fall and wreak havoc, but I wanted to keep the tree. Now that it's gone, I really like how open the yard seems and there is still the last tree standing....well not the last, but there were three maples and the one in the middle, the skinniest and the one that had been too shaded to grow, is now the one left standing. It actually looks nice

Hope you're having a fabulous day Vixmom!

It's been awhile since I've watched it, but as I recall, on the DVD of 1776, they integrated all the restored footage color-wise, so it was not as apparent what had been added.

They weren't able (I assume because of the technology at the time) to fix the color, so they left it as is, but the original laserdisc version was longer. The DVD didn't put back all the cut footage. But I thought it was an interesting study on movie editing in general. You could see exactly what they cut.

We had a wonderful visit with Dear Larry! We talked and laughed and shared Sparking Cider and Banana Bread. We talked some more and then we set up the blu-ray player. It was simpler than I thought it might be. Larry has Region 2 discs and a DVD (Nudie) so we were able to test and make sure it worked and it does. He then very thoughtfully gave us his old non-region DVD player. We will have to borrow some out-of-region 1 discs from him to make sure it works on our television (it should without problem). Anthony thought we had some Region 2 DVDs but we don't, what we have are PAL format DVDs burned by friends. Region is different from Format. The PALs are region free so that's not the issue, it's the format which is not playable on our old DVD player. These should work once we get it hooked up but we will still need to try the out-of-region 1 discs.
Anyway, we had a great visit. Anthony will try to visit Larry again later in the week or next week when he's at Toyland. I, alas, will be at work.
I have to check my schedule regarding Little Me. My niece is coming in to NYC at the same time to visit her boyfriend and she wants to see us as well. She's not the musical theatre type so I won't suggest she accompany me to Little Me, besides, she might get bored at an HHW get-together.

I don't think that's physically possible. :)

Good morning, gentle DRs!
And what about the rest of us, huh?
You are in your very own category, DR Jeanne. I just have to figure out what that is. ;)
-
I'd say elmore needs to upgrade to a Nudie Blu-ray.
-
Kids have come and gone. I've written about four pages and I guess I'll mush on and try to do two more before I leave. I don't really have to leave until about 6:45
-
I'd say elmore needs to upgrade to a Nudie Blu-ray.
Seriously. And Parapluies.
-
DRs Elmore and Ben:
I'm 99% certain of this, but I just want to clarify -- it's region-free on both Blu-ray and DVD -- right?
I've got a couple of imports I'm happy to donate to the cause.
-
Skating is on, yeah!
-
Yes, the machine (Larry's) is fully region-free for any and all discs and Larry has a blu-ray Nudie. I missed typing that information when I noted it on Page 3. It just says DVD (Nudie) but I meant to say blu-ray (Nudie). That's why we tried the Nudie disc, because it's blu-ray.
-
I'd say elmore needs to upgrade to a Nudie Blu-ray.
I bought the Nudie Blu-Ray as soon as it was released. It's one of my favorite movies.

DR singdaw, no kicks; the leg won't walk or do much of anything.
DR Anthony, the PAL DVDs should play on the non-regional player. Try them out.
-
Watching skating, too.
They just said Scott Hamilton's Olympic gold was 30 years ago - hard to believe!

Yes! We watched a bit of a region-2 BBC seriesTHE GATES and a bit of THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL.

It should play PAL-format; my old one did.
-
Chas, I'm sure it plays PAL format discs. That's the problem with our current DVD player, it doesn't play PAL. Most Region 2 (or non-region 1) discs are also not in NTSC format anyway, although a disc can be region free and still be in PAL (my cousin in Sheffield makes region-free discs on his computer but they are in PAL format) so most, if not all, region free players play both NTSC and PAL formats.
-
elmore is now happening and with it and firmly ensconced in the latest technology.
-
I've written about six pages so far, and I think I may try for another before I leave. If not, I'll definitely do a couple more when I'm back from the show and a little post show food.

Do you realize how many posts you could have made out of that song??
-
And the word of the day is: WAMBLE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: THE HOKEY POKEY
Oh!! So that's what it's all about!!
-
Had a small breakfast (in the next booth, Tom Wopat), did some banking and then had three people rehearsing - our female trio that's doing Fugue for Tinhorns, the beautiful Jean Louisa Kelly - we got along so well I think she'll do episode one of season three's Outside the Box - and then Bruce Vilanch and Barry Pearl who will stop the show cold.
Gee, you should have asked Tom to do an OUTSIDE THE BOX episode.

MBarnum is very jealous of the Tom Wopat sighting, I'm sure.
-
Very long day with more little details as we near getting the final manuscript together. I still need to write one short introduction to a chapter and a new bbq food truck that was too good to leave out.
I'm drooling just thinking about those ribs.
-
The food truck is called Dixieland BBQ and their slogan is:
"We like pig butts and we cannot lie."
-
Five!
-
TCB, I'm glad to see I haven't driven you off. Yet.
-
The chili at the cook-off I judged was largely average. Only one was truly awful. Some sort of concoction with brown sugar and vinegar in it. What that has to do with chili, I'll never know.
But too many of the others tasted like tomato-bean soup and not chili.
-
DR Cillaliz - when are you putting in this installation? ;)
Not any time soon. I still get nervous when Ricky jumps on the ledge over the stairway.
-
Really enjoyed the skating championships. Will be curious to see who makes the team
-
I agree with you, Cillaliz. It's rather nerve-racking to look at.
-
wow, doesn't seem like Saturday night, seems like Sunday night.
-
So why aren't we having a Golden Globes party? are they not live? do people not like them?

He is no doubt suffering a case of the vapors!

Of course not. That is usually my job.
-

No, they are live on the west coast. I just said that because BK said he was going to bed early, so I guess that doesn't stop us from having a party in BK's living room, with or without BK.
-
Oh Hell, I will be here anyway. Party or no party.
-
The Seahawks beat the New Orleans Saints today; so they are one win away from the Super Bowl.
-
Hmmm, neither John or Cilla has anything to say?
-
Oh, that would explain it. They both left.
-
Well another actor dropped out.
Luckily I have someone else to replace him.
And that was another story

When is the reading, Mike?

How do you know he didn't?

That's right!

Sorry to leave you TCB. We got new music for band and I've really been in the mood to practice. So that's what I was doing. Time flies when I'm practicing
-
Some people spend their money going on a vacation in the winter.....I paid to have a tree cut down and the garage door opener fixed. I really know how to have a good time :)
-
I guess I could hang around until the next page
-
It's going to be in the 40s tomorrow, maybe the 50s
-
I've got flute choir rehearsal in the afternoon. With travel time that means the whole afternoon. I was going to quit flute choir because it was just too much to learn all the music last fall. Then I remembered I couldn't play for about 3 weeks due to the last car accident. So, I'm going to just keep going for a while. We don't perform that often and I do enjoy the group. PLus, where else will I be able to play my alto flute
-
Oh my long posts won't get me to page 6
-
They also won't get me to the church on time, but since I'm not planning to go tomorrow, that's ok....well I'll be practicing with the flute choir at a church in the afternoon....does that count?
-
I am getting sleepy
-
But I'm really too close not to turn the page
-
so.....just because
-
Page 6....ta da!
-
My work is done here
-
Of course we're having a Globes partay. When I say early, I mean around eleven.
-
Back from a good show with an okay audience - they really liked it a lot but were not vocal about it, although at some point they did get a little more energy.
-
Then several of us went to California Chicken Cafe and had some food, which was not that good.
-
DR KevinH, I like the idea of an early Feb mini-HHW assemblage during LITTLE ME.
By all means. I'm with DR Elmore when it comes to the ticket prices, but I really want to hear this score, and if we're going to do this we'd best set ourselves to making it happen. I'd vote for one of the matinees with a meal afterwards. Anyone else?
EDIT: http://www.nycitycenter.org/tickets/productionNew.aspx?performanceNumber=7389
I don;t know that I would be able to make it I have a "retreat" at church during the day on the 8th and then I have a ticket to see Frank Langella as King Lear at BAM on that evening - I would love to go to a HHW matinee on the 9th but I think that might be stretching the finances and time a bit thin
-
although I would really like to go.... oh gosh its 2 Am I can't make decisions
-
I hada WONDERFUL day!
-
It rained but not torrentially and it was inthe 50's
-
I snagged a coupon for a local parking garage 1 block from the theatre $22 for 12 hours (more about that later)
-
Vixdad bought me on stage tickets to the shows---first up was Richard III i was sitting stage right - the actors dress and do their makeup on stage before the show and the musicians are playing period instruments and the clothing is historically accurate no zips, buttons or velcro... they were getting laced in to everything
-
Richard III was very good highly recommeded to any who can get there

Sounds wonderful!

Sounds fantastic!
-
then I wandered over to Chateu SkipnFJL
Skip cooked my favorite - his fried chicken- he knows the way to this girl's heart!
At the risk of making you all jealous I will reveal he also made homemade coleslaw and cheesy grits
-
dessert was a French peasant apple cake
I now sympathize with Marie Antionette - if the French peasants had cake like that who the heck need bread?!
-
Then I wandered back to the theatre and sat stage left for Twelfth Night
My sides still hurt from laughing , the tears were streaming down my face - if you can only see one of these show see Twelfth Night
-
I'm watching "The Little Prince" with Richard Kiley. I've never seen it all the way through.
-
wandered back to the parking garage where there was an enormous line -- but I passed the time pleasantly discussing shows with the ladies in line ahead of me
when it was my time at the payment booth the man scanned my coupon and the parking ticket and it came up $47 - I guess I had a shocked look on my face and then I suddenly realized - I went over the 12 hours by about 5 minutes ... because of the long line...
I didn't even get a chance to say anything because the man behind the glass said "Wait, wait, you waited so patiently I can something special for you - they he punched in some code and viola ...$12!!
I said are you sure? He said absolutely! Have a good night and so I did!
-
I have to be at church in 5 1/2 hours so I guess I should go to bed
-
Elmore I also hope that 2014 is a wonderful year for you - no need to wait until 2104
(thanks Cilla!)
-
I bought it from Amazon.com for the library where I work. Our selector wanted, and I bought, six copies. We got them and the went out circulating but then they all were sent back to the Service Center because none of them would work! It turns out that I unknowingly chose the PAL, Region 2 DVD. I am usually pretty good about making sure that I order US DVDs, but this time I goobered. :P
-
Mikey - thanks for the kind comment about my late night babblings

No. They had our barcodes, spine labels and property stamps put all over them. We really can't even put them in our book sales. It's one of those mistakes that just happen. Fortunately, with our $3million+ budget, it's not really a big deal, but still I should've been paying more attention. I had never made that mistake before...nor have I since.

Good Night all and have a wonderful tomorrow
And you, too!
-
Well...

...since we're so close...
