Title: THE PHANTOM DOORBELL
Post by: bk on February 22, 2014, 12:10:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were phantom notes, and now it is time for you to post until the phantom cows come home.

I'm back from last night's "The House at Pooh Corner" and cast party.  Last night's performance went off without hitch...actingly or technically.  We had a fairly large audience and they were fairly vocally appreciative of the show.

I just realized last night (Friday night) that our audiences for last night and Thursday had more adults than children.  Adults came to see the show without children, at all.  I can only guess that they either really love Pooh, or they're friends of the actors.  It doesn't matter...they're coming to the show. :)

After the show, we went to Eeyore and Owl's house (they're married...husbands to each other :) ) and had a cast party.  Nothing outrageous, just food, conversation and laughs.  A good time was had by all.  Today, we have two shows, then we finish the run tomorrow, strike the set and go home.

Today is a work day.....oh well.

Last night's swing dance instruction cotillion went very well.  Some of the participants were just interested in learning "tricks" which I don't teach unless they first learn some basics.....step touch is not the basis of "swing".....but there were some who did a very nice job.

The number of girls was greater than the number of boys, so we switched partners quite a bit....but it was fun.  There were a lot of cameras there, so eventually a photo or two may show up.

Good morning, all! Another early morning of ROBERTA dreams and anxiety, and after too much of it, i decided it was time to get out of bed. Tomorrow we have Day One of recording, so today I will listen to the first edits a few times to get a few things into my head. I'll spend part of the day working on the liner notes as well.

Coffee!

BK,

Perhaps I missed your critique, but did you ever watch 12 YEARS A SLAVE?

As I recall, like myself, you were not excited about the prospect of seeing the film, but if you did watch it, I would be curious to get your reaction.

Saturday morning greetings!  It's a quiet weekend in Lake Wobegon Middletown because Fr. Richard is at a clergy meeting in Indiana.  I'm about to settle down with my iPad to watch the skating exhibition from Sochi.  Also have some AAUW work to do in preparation for Monday's board meeting.

Wacky?  Spontaneous?  I think not.

DR Cillaliz, re: the women's figure skating. It wasn't that I was unhappy for the winner. I just didn't think that she had the best long program.

It's interesting how some losers at the Olympics are handling the loss of the Gold. I saw a Dutch speedskater last week who had the biggest frown on his face when he won silver. Contrast that with something I saw yesterday that was so beautiful.  It was in the skiing race (the one where there are 4 women against each other).  There was a veteran in the finals (who had a great chance to get a medal). She crashed. But when she got to the finish line she went and hugged the gold and silver medalists. I thought that was so classy.

Compare that to how the women's US hockey team reacted when they lost. I know they strongly dislike the Canadian team. And I know that they thought that they were going to win.  But wow the scowls on their faces throughout the medal ceremony was really bad (there were a few who smiled even though they were obviously unhappy).

Hopefully the parking won't be terrible. I'm going to try to go early. The skating rink shares the parking lot. And her pool has 5 x 25 m pools. So there will still be swimming lessons and stuff going on during the meet.

Fingers crossed on the parking.

Liquor was not involved, but perhaps it should. I was one of 9 people stuffed into a Fiat in Brazil as we were going up and down mountains to get to the beach. Sometimes, going up hill, it felt like we needed a Fred Flinstone push of the feet to keep the car moving. Plus, all of us, driver included, were dancing to some disco/samba/lambada music playing on the radio at the time, with arms flying out windows this way and that. Great memory.

Found a used copy of Kelli O'Hara's solo album last night.

I enjoyed the song from "Bridges of Madison County," but I found her affected and forced on too many other songs, while the arrangements were odd.

WACKY EVENT THAT I CAN RECALL:

One that comes to mind and is suitable for reading here (and in an indirect way relates to the subject of westerns vis a vis Red Gold):

During my time as an undergraduate, the drinking age was changed and then changed back for some dumb reason.  Anyway, to celebrate, a group of us got together and toddled on over to Collegetown where I was "magically" transformed into Nasty McNasty (of Warner Bros. cartoon fame).  Not being a drinker, the effects of the many White Russians I had made me think that I could slide the glasses down the length of the bar just like in the Old West.  Needless to say, I broke quite a few glasses and pitchers.  Before you could say "Randolph Scott", my buddies got me out of there to avoid any problems.  In real life, I am a very Clark Kent-ish person, but I discovered that night I can be really wild given a bit of the old spirits.  I learned my lesson though.  I was so sick for the next 2-3 days, that I have never, ever gotten that inebriated again, and never will.

Keeping with the same college vibe, I recently saw an old college friend of mine who in his day was quite toothsome to many people (think Chris Isaak with a Jersey Boy attitude).  While I do not wish to compare him to a Camembert, he has not aged well, i.e. he looks a lot older than me (which makes me feel better about myself).

Conroy's a character, and I mean that in the best way. When he came to a book convention in Sarasota, he had one prerequisite for the person doing the interview with him: The person had to have read at least one of his books. The journalist didn't have to like them, but he had to have read at least one of them.

There was only one person in the newsroom who had done that, so Charlie got the job, and he did a great interview with him for both the newspaper and for the TV station we ran. When Conroy came into the newsroom for the TV interview, he was gregarious and full of Southern charm, stopping to talk with folks. We even talked for about a minute or so, about what I can't remember.

I just realized later that he didn't want to deal with superficial questions about his work. And by that point, he was so well known that he didn't have to.

I keep tweaking my recipe- no beans and this year I added a cup of  strong black coffee and a bottle of Saranac black forest beer to the mix - I prefer a sweet chili  myself but I seem to be in the minority so this year I made it medium hot and  kept away from the sweetness - it had a nice flavor and  slow burn  but not enough to blow your lips off

The Pastor's chili was a really dark sweet chili, I could taste the brown sugar and molasses in it -  I really preferred his chili to mine but  mine was the first pot to empty - people were coming back for seconds and thirds  so I was pleased with how it came out

This year they had a red "carpet" and photographers to take our pictures

we were encouraged to dress as if we were to walk the red carpet.

I scoured the local thrift shops and finally found a dress sequined, beaded, and rhinestoned within an inch of its life

That seemed to be the general opinion.  Much as the Vixter and I loved Pastor's chili we were in the minority - he had nearly half a pot of chili left at the end of the night

I am off to bed!

My head is so congested, I used the neti pot tonight to unclog my sinuses. I have to be up early to deal with all my prep work before I leave for the sessions.  Since it's Sunday, God know the bus routes are more screwed up than usual.  I will take the No. 104 to Lincoln Center and transfer to the No. 11 bus to 9th and 45th Street. I'd like to be there by 10:30, so I'll leave around 9:15.

Tonight I watched HOCUS POCUS, which was on my Netflix queue for Halloween, but I kept moving other films to the top of the list. It had funny moments but went on too long. Last night's film was much better.

DR vixmom, you look lovely in your sparkly blue dress. Molasses in chili? Oy!

Lou: Of course I do.  I know lotsa words.  I was the smartest kid in the Third Grade.  I was so smart, I repeated it 4 times!
Bud: Can you tell me -some words?
Lou: That's what I've been doin'.  Whaddaya think I'm talkin' with, Morse code?
Bud: Well, . . . .
Lou: Howsa 'bout: apple, cat, dog, tree, fire hydrant . . . .
Bud: No, -some words.
Lou: But those are some words!  You didn't say which words, you said some and I told you some.
Bud: No, those aren't -some words, those are objects.
Lou: HA! HA!  I object to that!  Whaddaya want from me?  I ain't in school no more.  I said some words.  Ain't that enough?
Bud: No, -some words are like: handsome, gruesome . . . .
Lou: Oh yeah!  That reminds me of my vegetable garden.  It was gruesome.
Bud: Why?  Did you have an infestation?
Lou: Of course.  I infested a lot of time and money in my garden and so it gruesome.
Bud: Never mind!  Anyway, you simply add -some and you get new words.
Lou: I always add somes and I always wind up owing you!
Bud: Today's word is toothsome.  Have you ever heard of that word before?
Lou: Can't say that I have, but I'm sure my dentist has!
Bud: Okay wise guy.  You use it in a sentence.
Lou: You win some and you lose some, you one some and you toothsome.
Bud: No, toothsome can mean someone who is attractive.
Lou: Yes, I know.  Anytime a pretty girl walks down the street, I always toothsome horn at her.  I even whistle to boot!

If flute choir was here in town and I didn't have to drive an hour to go there, it would be easier to just take a break and practice, but with the travel time it takes a half day to do it.  Right now, I just don't have the half day.   We don't have any performances coming up, so it isn't THAT big a deal, but I feel bad not going so I may still go, we'll see.

After the two shows, I and several cast members went to see our first Piglet, Kate, play Peter Pan in the Olympia School District's practically-all-teacher production of "Peter Pan."  This is why we had to have a different actor play Piglet this weekend.  Jordan was quite good, too, and certainly made the part his own.

Kate as Peter Pan was very good!  I knew that she could sing...she sang a couple of years ago in "Goodnight Moon", but that was all very gentle singing.  Peter Pan belts it out and also sings the soprano stuff when Peter is disguised as the Spanish seņorita (or something like that).  Kate really has the range that I'd never seen.  They did use the term "Indians" and perform "Ugg-a-Wugg."  I don't know if anyone was offended by their inclusion.  When I was in a production twenty some-odd years ago, we modified it, but I don't remember how it was changed to lessen the offensiveness of it.
