Title: RUMINATING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes ruminated, and now it is time for you to post until the ruminating cows come home.

To TCB and others who caught my omission of Russian or Thousand Island on the pastrami:

It just happens I ate this one without it, and it was still wonderful.  But of course it's a staple.  For Russian, I use Ken's Steak House, one of the few (maybe even the only one) available in the closest supermarket.  Though I'd probably get it anyway, because I like the name Steak House.

TOD

I would put in Beat The Devil as one of my favorites. One can usually find it cheap as it is in public domain. Great cast, story. And a side note Stephen Sondheim worked on this film in a most unlikely position. Some of you right know, but the others take a guess without looking it up. :-)

Good morning, all!  Another bad night of sleeping, and more weird dreams, the last was something about the Drama Book Shop and co-workers there I haven't seen in years.

I will spend today at Chelsea Music proofreading scores for a Las Vegas musical based on the bigoted, redneck DUCK DYNASTY, which offends me politically, but my whore side says take the money and run. My philosophy has been, if you're going to be a whore, at least be a smart one.

TOD:

Humphrey Bogart is my favorite actor.  Indeed, if you've read my 2nd memoir, you know how devastated I was when I heard he'd died.

DEADLINE U.S.A. is an excellent movie, but for some reason, it's really not that well known.

Favorite Bogart movies:

CASABLANCA
THE MALTESE FALCON
KEY LARGO
THE TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE
THE DESPERATE HOURS
THE CAINE MUTINY
ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT
THE ROARING TWENTIES
DARK PASSAGE
THE OKLAHOMA KID
WE'RE NO ANGELS
THE ENFORCER

Back to beef stroganoff - I, too, have a more elaborate (and probably more authentic) recipe.  It takes me all day to make it and my family doesn't like the result any better than the quickie version I posted last night.

And, DR TCB, I don't see why plain water wouldn't work as well as sherry.  You just need the cup of liquid to create the gravy.

My friends Bill and Laurie, who now live in Dayton, have a framed poster of Deadline USA in their home. This, of course, because of the journalism ties. Somehow, he's still working for a newspaper.

I think I've gotten that folly out of my system. I'm too old for that now.

DR TCB - I use a free program called AUDACITY.....you can record and edit music files.

Just find your microphone input - or your computer might have a built-in microphone....

You can also download and edit any music file you like.....also clean up files that have problems.

It has a learning curve....but it works like a charm.  If I need to change the file format, I use Format Factory....which is also free.

Thanks, but i doubt it.  I'm guessing it will be scored for some sort of bluegrass ensemble, but I know I won't be looking at anything in the Russell Bennett neighborhood.

DR JRand65, I am not arranging, simply proofreading the copy from scores by an orchestrator who wrks generally on rock shows and small klezmer-like groups.  there will be several guiars, I'm guessing, and a lot of chord symbols.

Speaking of great coffee mugs, I have the all time winner but I'll have to dig through some stuff that's packed safely away to find it and photograph it because I'm finding no images on the web.  Some years ago the NYC medical examiner's office had a limited quantity of mugs made up just for fun, for in-house employees, and a friend who was working there gave me one.  I forget what it said or what the image was, but it had a thermal design that, when heated by the coffee, a "window" into the cup turned blood red.

Okay, okay, I'll go down to the basement and find which box it's in.  Sometime this weekend.

We have 2 of those magic coffee mugs in our household.  Mine is from the Victoria Theatre Association in Dayton - it's a drawing of the proscenium arch and when you pour in the hot liquid the curtain rises to reveal the message "You are a Star!"

Rob's is reproduction of Vincent Van Gogh's self-portrait and when you pour in the hot liquid his ear disappears.

Title: Re: RUMINATING

LWOP most likely....which is good because that means the defendant pays for her own appeals, unless someone takes the case pro bono....

Almost 2/3 of DP verdicts are overturned....with a free automatic appeal......I think those are to Federal courts - LWOP appeals I think are to appellate courts.

So DR LAURA will only have to pay to house her NOT for her legal fees.  One more month and she is off to Perryville.

I am in the middle of making sour cream cookie dough to freeze.  I have already added the eggs only to find out the fresh sour cream is all watery.  I can't use it, and I can't go get more until later today, which means I have to put the softened butter mix into the frig.  I hope my cookies taste ok by the time I'm done.

Has the sour cream reached its expiration?   You should be able to stir the sour cream and reconstitute the moisture back into it.

It expires in May and I stirred it.  It is just liquid.  It smells fine but I think the texture of my cookies would be too thin.

Toss that sour cream, DR Jane.  It might not be "actually" bad, but the consistency sounds horrible and it would either be a total distraction or it wouldn't work in a recipe.

This one was a color slide that I scanned, DR Jrand64.  I don't remember if it was Kodachrome or Ektachrome, but my uncle took slides with a decent 35mm camera back in the day, and we didn't even know a set of them were still around until I asked him a couple of years ago.  (Many of his had suffered water damage at some point.)  None of us had even remembered those pictures taken on a visit in 1963, so what a find they were.

It made me want to look back at the Billboard #1 hits.

There are so many songs and artists who I have never heard of. Many of them were in the #1 position for multiple weeks.

Just to see how much musical tastes have changed in 50 years

The Theme From A Summer Place was the #1 hit for 9 consecutive weeks in 1960.! And it had no lyrics in the Percy Faith version!

Well, after hauling the trash can down to the road for trash pickup tomorrow morning, I can more easily understand why the show was cancelled tonight, especially if they got more snow in that area than we did.  Following the rain and icy mix of the past day and half, today's snow was just icing on the cake, and the surfaces are rough, uneven, horrible.  If we weren't at the tail end of this sh stuff and still had the main event of winter to look forward to, we'd be in trouble with the driveway and road surfaces in as frozen bad shape as they are now.  I'm not sure I've ever seen my own driveway looking as treacherous as it does today.  Tomorrow I must take a few pictures.

In the meantime, I'm now glad I don't have to drive out and back.   :)

I would put in Beat The Devil as one of my favorites. One can usually find it cheap as it is in public domain. Great cast, story. And a side note Stephen Sondheim worked on this film in a most unlikely position. Some of you right know, but the others take a guess without looking it up. :-)

I completely zoned last night that this morning was the commentary for the Fantasticks.  Thankfully Nick and Jean Louisa Kelly both called and just as thankfully I'd already done much of my prep work and questions but not all.  I quickly did some others then had to run to the session.

We had to, of course, chatter away for all eighty-six minutes of the film, which is never easy and I kind of blew through my history stuff too quickly - I should have paced it out better, but you get in that mode and just yak.  I had questions for Jean and she answered them and we really motored on for the first hour - then it got hard because we'd covered so much.  But I think we got through the rest okay and there are two other commentary tracks on the disc so between us all we should be fine.  I got the history of the show, the TV version, the Gower Champion aborted movie attempt, and she talked about the cast and location and how it was to do the film.

Also note, if you will, some spots on my legs.   Skeeter bites.  Every summer, I'd be eaten alive by skeeters.  Some would get infected.  Our 4th of July week trip to the beach would generally clear them up (all that salt water, dontchaknow!), but the scars lingered.

I did get 6/5 hurs of proofreading in, and I will go back tomorrow around 11:00 and finish the two numbers I'm on.  I had to get the guitar parts proofed.  Before then, I will stop by City Center, see Joshie and pick up a check.

The band for the Duck Dynasty show is seven players: 2 guitars, bass, violin, 2 keyboards, and drums.

It was kind of fun watching the ballyhoo at the courthouse earlier today-- the news people have been camped out all week.  At 5:00 today there were still a few news people around when I left getting ready to broadcast "Live-- on location from the courthouse" (even though absolutely nothing was happening at the courthouse 7 hours after the verdict was read).  But that doesn't stop the idiots from having to broadcast there.

Kevin, our DC office was closed but a colleague who works in the DC office had to be in NY today so he put in his time. He said his first Amtrak was cancelled but he got a second train to get to NY but he wasn't sure he would be able to get home to DC.

I'm glad everything got fixed, because I got absolutely no place with my two calls to Cox Communications about restoring this site-- just a waste of 80 minutes (all right, it was actually 83 minutes--one call was 37 minutes; the other was 46 minutes long).

So I truly appreciate whatever it was that somebody did to get you guys accessible to us.

Welcome back, Kerry!

You know, we need a name for this, for quick reference when future DNS problems rear their ugly head.  So, hmmmmm, let me see.

I have it!  "Cox" something...      :D

I did that for lunch instead.

Okay, I did two of them for lunch.  One cole slaw, and one regular with just mustard.

Deeeeeeeeee-licious.

Remember, these are smaller than yer average bread slice, so, that's almost like one large sandwich.

It's definitely not like two large sandwiches.  It is two small sandwiches.

You can take my word for it.  No, really!   :)

Hey, a funny thing happened on the way to the Blu-ray player.  I opened a small package from Warner Archive, took out POSSESSED (the one with Joan Crawford), opened the case, and there was the disc for FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD.  Which is on my "list", but I haven't gotten around to ordering it yet.  So, I guess I have a phone call to make or an email to write tomorrow.  I'm just too damn tired to do it now.  Not as tired as, say, Lili von Shtupp.  But pretty tired nonetheless.

They're still working on it - this is such horse manure.  But my web guy called me and we changed the DNS servers from Google (wherein the problem is happening for thousands of people) to AT&T, and that worked and I'm back via the computer.  Meantime, I wrote perfunctory notes on the iPad and may just post them from there.
