TOD
Since I lived in Canada any film from the USA was a foreign film and there were many.
But I also saw many others from the UK, France, Spain, Italy that never made it to the USA

Now that a hotel has come on board for rooms for Miss Clark.
The powers that be need to see if they can get the hotel can hold rooms for them every year on an on going basis in case they have people coming from out of town and if not they just release the rooms.

With all those musicals opening recently that Gypsy Robe must be traveling from theater to theater without a rest.

I am hoping to hit my posting milestone on Monday with a big announcement that has been part of my life these past 9 months.
And no I am not giving birth in case someone might be counting on a miracle happening.

Good morning, all.
I have a completely free day and evening here. There's plenty that I must attend to, but no one's calling the shots but me.

MIRACLE vibes for BK!
-
Good morning, all! I am off to my barber, then Toyland, were I will finish up my shipment to Miami University library.
I was up far too early and i'll pay for that later. I never know how the bus connections will go, and I do not like being late.
-
Bruce-- Congratulations on getting your two terrific stars. I love them both.
-
TOD:
I don't think I saw any foreign language films until I was in college. During my freshman year in the University of Washington Drama Department, my teachers and fellow students were "condemning" American movies and praising all foreign language ones. So, I started going to the Ridgemont Theater which specialized in foreign movies.
I saw a lot of Bergman pictures: WILD STRAWBERRIES, THE MAGICIAN, THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY and, although I admired them, they were not really my cup of tea.
Then, I saw LAST YEAR AT MARIANBAD, which I thought was the biggest piece of s**t I'd ever seen. To me, it looked like the editor threw all the pieces of film into the air, then cut them together in the order than he pulled them out of the pile. That turned me off of foreign films for years.
These days, I'll watch one or two foreign language movies per year, but I really don't enjoy reading subtitles. If I want to read, I'll pick up a book.

Ditto!
I saw Petula Clark do SUNSET BOULEVARD in London.

Greetings from Toyland!
There was an email waiting for me from the Man From Philadelphia, telling the landlord that Toyland was dead, and that he'd be happy to move out as soon as another tenant wanted the space, so my July 31 deadline has been shortened.

Thursday morning greetings! It's cold and dreary here in SW Ohio - what happened to spring?
-
First on my agenda for today is a luncheon meeting about the interpersonal issue within AAUW. I'm hoping to get the WHOLE story...
-
BK, congratulations on getting both Petula and Melissa. I've never seen P in person, but I did see M when she was a Harlette during Bette Midler's very first concert tour. Sounds like a wonderful show for a very worthy cause. DR Elmore and I had a mutual friend taken by ALS and it was devastating to watch her decline.
-
Thanks for the link DR FJL.....I enjoy that song very much!!!

Oy! (re Toyland)
-
I saw Petula Clark on Broadway in BLOOD BROTHERS. We were at the Music Box Theatre sitting on house left, so we could see into the stage left wings. During one scene, I noticed Ms. Clark standing in the wings next to a small red light. She was holding a rolled up rug in her arms.
The scene changed, the light turned green, she walked out onstage, unrolled the rug, sang a song, the lights changed, she rolled up the rug and walked out, stage right.

Good morning, all.
Continued miracle vibes for BK and company.
Vibes for Jane, TCB and anyone else in need.

TOD:
I saw Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast when I was 9 or 10 and fell in love with foreign films. It continues to this day.
When I was a teenager, I started seeing Bergman films in earnest. Fell for Smiles of a Summer Night, which remains one of my favorite films.
While I loved the likes of The Seventh Seal and I never missed an episode of Scenes from a Marriage on TV, I was more interested in comedies, like Lelouch's Cat and Mouse and the original Tall Blond Man with One Red Shoe.
I have too little time these days to sit down with a subtitled movie, but I have a collection of about 75 or so waiting for me. I really want to watch my collection of Truffaut's Antoine Doinel movies. I found them really charming the first time through (except for 400 Blows, which was devastating.)
-
TOD
I don't remember being exposed to foreign films (other than British films) in Fort Lauderdale in the 1960s. Once in college, however, the Bergman films were my introduction to foreign language/subtitled films, and I took to them right away. I, too, have a lot sitting here on the shelf waiting for me, and I look forward to each and every one of them. (This includes the Doinel set, which I have NOT yet watched.)
-
The only foreign films I saw as a young tyke were Japanese monster movies like Godzilla and Hercules movies from Italy......
I saw some on television.....

DR Jane, my dad's former law partner lives in Vancouver. Continued vibes
I expect the former partner finds the weather an improvement while for me it is going to be colder, especially the trek to and from the garage.
Thanks for the continued vibes.

Very nice photo DR GEORGE....
Looking forward to DR MIKE's milestone announcement.
-
Yes, hoping DR TCB is feeling better today.
-
Been up since nine and answering emails and having telephonic conversation ever since.
-
I am home, the Fed Ex pickup is scheduled, and all hell s breaking loose over Toyland. The Man from Philadelphia has told the management he wants out as soon as he can find another storage space and the management can find a tenant, He never bothered to ask any of my colleagues if this sudden rush is an inconvenience since he'd told all of us we could use the office until the lease was up in July. As a result, there's been a rush of panic since I alerted them. I was hoping to finish the Moross work on Gentlemen, Be Seated!, so I'm als a bit pissed.
-
Hugs and vibes DR elmore!

What sheer insanity, DR Elmore...

People are, to put it kindly, insane.

Shocking turn of events DR ELMORE.

FINDING NEVERLAND opened on Broadway last night, and tonight we have the new revival of THE KING AND I.

Damn! I may crawl to New York!

I am not xenophobic, but I do have a problem with people on phone service who speak English as a second or third language. This afternoon, I spoke to someone at Fed Ex whose accent i did not recognize to schedule tomorrow's pickup. I told him several times that the address was Suite 1003B. I just spoke to another customer service person to verify the pickup. The address he had on file for tomorrow was 103B. Oy!
I will call back later to verify the Foundation's name is correct.
-
DR TCB why did you need a new eye doctor.
My previous eye doctor left town. I don't care for this new doctor.
-
DR TCB I hope your news at the eye doctor's was ok.
The glaucoma is worse; and now I need to have cataract surgery.
-
Yes, hoping DR TCB is feeling better today.
Actually, I felt fine, but I couldn't see anything.

The only foreign films I saw as a young tyke were Japanese monster movies like Godzilla and Hercules movies from Italy......
I saw some on television.....
I was trying to think of what my earliest foreign films could've been, and they probably were seen on Saturday mornings...movies like Godzilla and other assorted foreign monsters. Of course, these were all dubbed, not subtitled. I can't remember what subtitled movie would've been my first.

Sadly, my hair turned darker all on its own. I think I would've liked to have had the red hair, but it was not to be. ::)

~~~Eye Vibes of All Kinds for TCB!!~~~
Today has been a day. I had to compile the monthly report of all the bills that were being paid this month and go to my own eye appointment (no real change from last year) AND tonight we start the final weekend of "Laughing Stock."
-
I haven't really looked at my lines at all this week. ::) I shouldn't have any problem tonight, though. I'll be able go through them at least a couple times once I'm at the theater.
Until later!
But before I go...
Gratuitous Post #100!
Hello, everyone.
Congrats to BK for pulling together such talent for the ALS benefit.
I'm surprised, though, that Pet couldn't just fly over in her baby Lear jet. Maybe it's in the shop. You know how temperamental jets are.
A couple weeks ago I had to call the California Franchise Tax Board and had a similar experience. The woman I spoke to seemed to know her job and seemed to be able to understand me, but I simply could not understand her. She told me she fixed the problem, but I never did learn what the problem was. All I know is that I paid my taxes and the check cleared the bank, so I should be OK. Truly, some people shouldn't be handling customers over the phone. I do think it's easier to understand people in person.
DR TCB I hope your news at the eye doctor's was ok.
Watched "Howl," which had some good performances in it, but the script, using transcripts and poems, was more admirable than dramatically effective.
Still, I'm enjoying watching Ginsberg read "Howl."
I met him during his last year before a book signing. He was very flirtatious and vibrant and funny. I treasure my autographed copy of his collected poems.
In Seattle tonight, there was a case of "road rage" that ended with a one year old baby being shot in the head. The whole thing is just sick!
-
Had an interesting work session today, going from start to finish. I'm glad, in certain ways, that it was terrible - she was all over the map, in cutesy land, too big, too loud, and she hadn't really warmed up her voice so even the songs didn't sound good. And she knew it. And the good part is that despite that the show worked rather well I thought. She didn't go as fast as she usually does, but even without blocking and going a bit too fast, the show ran eighty-one minutes - so I do think it will end up being a little over eighty-five minutes, which is just perfect - even if it went to ninety. Those minutes go very quickly.
-
We went to Casa Vega for the meal - but we're not going to do that before rehearsals anymore. I had a cheese enchilada and a beef taco. So, I'm going to have a salad with oil and vinegar as the dressing, so no real calories at all.
I've been away from all you DRs for too long. Just wanted to check in and say I'm still battling lymphoma. I have to go for a biopsy next week. My most recent PET scan was clear save for the tonsil area. If all goes well, then I am scheduled for surgery in June to repair my large abdominal hernia.
I hope to rejoin the group here more regularly and am sorry I have been errant and truant, but I've had and have lots of worries. I try not to, but go figure, there it is: worry.
I'm glad, in certain ways, that it was terrible - she was all over the map, in cutesy land, too big, too loud, and she hadn't really warmed up her voice so even the songs didn't sound good. And she knew it. And the good part is that despite that the show worked rather well I thought. She didn't go as fast as she usually does, but even without blocking and going a bit too fast, the show ran eighty-one minutes - so I do think it will end up being a little over eighty-five minutes, which is just perfect - even if it went to ninety. Those minutes go very quickly.
Any chance that we might get to see some rehearsal footage some time?
If the composer would agree to it.
I've been away from all you DRs for too long. Just wanted to check in and say I'm still battling lymphoma. I have to go for a biopsy next week. My most recent PET scan was clear save for the tonsil area. If all goes well, then I am scheduled for surgery in June to repair my large abdominal hernia.
I hope to rejoin the group here more regularly and am sorry I have been errant and truant, but I've had and have lots of worries. I try not to, but go figure, there it is: worry.
Dan how nice to hear from you. You have been missed. And we have been worried. I am glad that things seem to be improving. Please come back soon.
Thank you TCB. I like your photo.
I will try to be regular again (no, not the one that goes with fiber).
Thanks. We really can supply a lot of moral support.
That's a good moral for morale!
Lately I have been listening to John Adams and Philip Glass. Don't know why. And, as a topper, Anthony Newley. Must be my state of mind, I guess. Trying to change my point of view perhaps.
-
Trust me, Dan. Sharing your worries with us won't make them go away, but they will be easier to cope with them.
I like Newley. He is an acquired taste. I love his Scrooge. Almost as good as mine.
When you say John Adams, you aren't talking the President are you?
-
That's true. I don't know why I stayed away but for the worries. Was getting into the tall weeds of worry and couldn't see the support that's been there all along. Too much inner dialogue and not enough external with give-and-take, other perspectives.
-
Give us another try. If we don't help, then you can walk away.
-
When you say John Adams, you aren't talking the President are you?
No. He's a minimalist composer. He wrote the opera "Nixon in China", "On the Transmigration of Souls", "The Century Rolls" and, one of my favorites, "The Chairman Dances." You may have heard "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" which is usually played as an encore.
But if nothing else, you are bound to get a few laughs.
I've always liked him even though I know a lot of people thought of him as hammy and overindulgent. His songs are good and memorable. I think it's fascinating to hear a song writer perform his own song. Newley's version of "Goldfinger" is very Lotte Lenya-esque. While it won't overtake Shirley Bassey's immortal version, it sure is compelling. Would have added a different flavor to the movie.
Thank you TCB for your kindness. I will return tomorrow.
I am getting tired and must get some sleep.
Have a good night and see you tomorrow.
I will have to check out "Goldfinger." I bet I will like it. And you are right. He writes wrote some great songs.
I hope you will come back tomorrow. There are a lot of people here who will be sorry they missed you tonight.
Sleep well. Good night!
Welcome back, Dan! That's great about your (mostly) clear PET scan!
In Seattle tonight, there was a case of "road rage" that ended with a one year old baby being shot in the head. The whole thing is just sick!
What the f*ck? What is the world coming to??
And the director agrees, too. ;)
I have "Nixon in China." I don't know if I've ever listened to it. If I have, it's been a LONG time since I did. I found it on my shelf, so I'll bring it to work and listen to it tomorrow.
A heartfelt welcome back to Dan M.
We may shoot some rehearsal footage next week, just for fun.
