I barely made it through my entire shift. I was in a lot of pain by the end. My body is not used to standing for almost 6 hours at a time. I came home lay down for a bit and then took the dog out, came home and went to bed.
Hopefully as the days go on I'll get used to it.
I am very fortunate that an Atkins/low-carb diet works very well for me. Various binges and indulgences notwithstanding, that is, at its core, how I like to eat anyway. But even the diet that works for you takes discipline and sticking with it, and I think dieting of any type is one of the toughest challenges we face. I empathize and sympathize with all who attempt it.
DR Kerry has the ultimate answer, of course, and that is to eat less -- sometimes even within a diet. And exercise. It's tough, man. I'm a sloth when it comes to exercise, too. I can do it, but sticking with it and integrating it into a routine? Lordy.
My father was taken to the emergency room last night and then to a different hospital so we are dealing with some things today.
Not sure what we will find out....but I may not be around much today.

Fortunately we were walking miles and miles when we had to eat all of our meals out. We quickly realized we should not be eating both lunch and dinner and would do one or the other.
Hey, everyone!
The topic of the day is quite relevant for me, as I'm actively trying to drop some 35 pounds. So far, I'm about 25% of the way there. I'm a bit of a data hound, so I did my research on what would work, and I think the single most important success factor is personalization.
I don't have the patience to track my food intake on an ongoing basis, but I don't mind eating the same thing each day. I have a digital scale, so I can monitor every fluctuation.
The Elan diet plan (3 weeks, 8 pounds and counting):
1) Daily morning weighings & weight tracking. No excuses, no delusions.
2) Zero junk food at or after work. Period. No more buying chips & soda from the vending machines
3) Breakfast: Corn flakes, lowfat milk, banana. A second fruit if still hungry
4) Lunch: big bowl of salad (romaine, cukes, peppers). Sometimes add some sliced egg, tuna, or chickpeas
5) Dinner: try to eat salad first, then have whatever the family's eating.
6) Drinks: Water or seltzer. No soda, no iced tea
From what I've seen, diets fail in the long run because people don't choose plans that they can sustain long-term, and they don't include enough regular feedback & motivation. I think I can eat & live this way more-or-less permanently, I've made sure that my colleagues and family know what I'm doing, and I have a coach who calls me periodically to give encouragement & advice. There was a very nice TED talk a while back on the importance of setting up an external structure (coaching, environment, tools, peers, and data) when trying to effect significant lifestyle changes. Often, failure comes not because of a lack of willpower or desire, but because willpower isn't enough to overcome structural disadvantages.
I obsessed over fresh spinach and field greens, buying it fresh every other day.
Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee!

And don't forget fresh water.
Nice. Fresh. Water.
;D
I ordered 8 jars of sauce from an Italian restaurant and they accidentally sent 8 cases. Returning them became very complicated so they said to keep them.
Wow, DR Jane! You're all set for at least the next few days.
;D
I'm glad you don't have to pay the shipping to return all of that sauce.

Woo-hoo, spaghetti party at Jane & Keith's!

And speaking of diets...
Who here wants a slice of Whoopie Pie Cake?

Perhaps that is the title of one of the missing Sherlock Holmes stories...

And just in case anyone else wants it, here's a recipe for the Whoopie Pie Cake:

DR Jane, I hope that the pasta sauce is good. Would you recommend ordering from the restaurant? Maybe they'll make the same mistake. ;)
I may have actually found a decent ricotta. Safeway has a line of products made by its division Lucerne under the "brand" O Organics. Why this would be considered organic is beyond me, but O Organics Organic Ricotta Part Skim Cheese is the closest I think I will come to the NY/NJ brand of ricotta made by Polly-O. Like Polly-O, the O Organics version doesn't have all those thickeners and stabilizers often found in cheap ice cream. All of the ricotta I've had out here, up until "finding" this brand, looked like wax, had no flavor, and behaved like spackle. I'm very surprised that I found this because out here, unfortunately, most folks think Pizza Hut is the final word on Italian food. Why? Because most of them typically go to Peter Piper Pizza or Chuck E. Cheese. Pizza Hut is a fancy night out. Yuck!

Of course it takes all day to make it.
By the time the sauce is done, you are out of the mood.
I don't want to give up my sobriety for a bowl of ice cream.

With the grace of God, next month it will be 22 years.
I have never heard of Greater Good.
