Fortunately we were walking miles and miles when we had to eat all of our meals out.  We quickly realized we should not be eating both lunch and dinner and would do one or the other.

Hey, everyone!

The topic of the day is quite relevant for me, as I'm actively trying to drop some 35 pounds. So far, I'm about 25% of the way there. I'm a bit of a data hound, so I did my research on what would work, and I think the single most important success factor is personalization.

I don't have the patience to track my food intake on an ongoing basis, but I don't mind eating the same thing each day. I have a digital scale, so I can monitor every fluctuation.

The Elan diet plan (3 weeks, 8 pounds and counting):
1) Daily morning weighings & weight tracking. No excuses, no delusions.
2) Zero junk food at or after work. Period. No more buying chips & soda from the vending machines
3) Breakfast: Corn flakes, lowfat milk, banana. A second fruit if still hungry
4) Lunch: big bowl of salad (romaine, cukes, peppers). Sometimes add some sliced egg, tuna, or chickpeas
5) Dinner: try to eat salad first, then have whatever the family's eating.
6) Drinks: Water or seltzer. No soda, no iced tea

From what I've seen, diets fail in the long run because people don't choose plans that they can sustain long-term, and they don't include enough regular feedback & motivation. I think I can eat & live this way more-or-less permanently, I've made sure that my colleagues and family know what I'm doing, and I have a coach who calls me periodically to give encouragement & advice. There was a very nice TED talk a while back on the importance of setting up an external structure (coaching, environment, tools, peers, and data) when trying to effect significant lifestyle changes. Often, failure comes not because of a lack of willpower or desire, but because willpower isn't enough to overcome structural disadvantages.

Best diet I was ever on:

NutriSystem which I supplemented with spinach salad/field green salad and boiled eggs at lunch (lunch is almost always expected to include salad, I believe).  My dressing was just a bit of olive oil and generous squirts of lemon juice.

I obsessed over fresh spinach and field greens, buying it fresh every other day.

DR Charles Pogue is correct:  One must burn more calories than one ingests.   I found power walking a wonderful way to crank up my internal engines to burn more calories.

Fortunately we were walking miles and miles when we had to eat all of our meals out.  We quickly realized we should not be eating both lunch and dinner and would do one or the other.

I had a mindset that I was hurting myself by not eating a balanced dinner.  Trouble was, I was eating balanced lunches, too.  Dinner was always around 8 p.m.   Bedtime was 11 p.m.

I now eat according to hunger.  If I'm not hungry during the day, I eat a sandwich or a  piece of fruit or a salad.  I start my evening meal immediately upon arrival at home (just before 5 p.m.).  I'm done eating by 6 p.m.  Bedtime is now 9 p.m., but at the latest 10 p.m.  Most nights I might cut hunger pangs with a couple of slices of cheese toast.  I have eaten cereal at night when I want more substance.

My singular "sweets" vice:  Ice cream.

Excellent choices.  It really is about changing how you need, not finding a quick fix for a short period of time.

I ordered 8 jars of sauce from an Italian restaurant and they accidentally sent 8 cases.  Returning them became very complicated so they said to keep them.

All the best on the diet plans, y'all. Each of us is different, which means no one plan will likely work for all of us. I do like the seefood diet. You know the rest of the joke ...
