I got a lot of sleep and a lot of dreams.  I had one in which I was writing a mystery - o maybew i was in the mystery! - and a long JURASSIC PARK situation with velociraptors. In my last dream, i was talking about Menotti's children's opera HELP! HELP! THE GLOBOLINKS!

And to ask why I got a medical card in one envelope and a denial letter in another envelope - both on the same day.

TOD

No absolute favorites these days, as long as they're good representations of (1) oatmeal raisin, (2) peanut butter, or (3) chocolate chip.  And the latter is definitely in third place.  I'm more choosy about them than I used to be, because more and more I find traditional milk chocolate chips so cloying that I really can only eat just one.  Something darker is required.  I like other kinds of cookies, too, but these are my go-to.  And all of these three favorites should be chewy, but not ridiculously so.

A couple of cookie memories:  The Famous Amos popularity explosion in the 1970s.  If you lived in L.A. you bought them at the Famous Amos store on Sunset Blvd.  It seemed everyone was excited about those, but I never much liked them because though they tasted fine, they were always way too crispy for me.  It was then only a few years before Mrs. Fields hit the scene, and man, that was a cookie.  I was crazy about those, and I was still gobbling up the chocolate chip ones then.  But my favorite back in those days?  The harder to find David's Cookies.  The place I discovered them was a kiosk they had in one of the department stores in Century City.  I want to say it was inside the west door of Bullock's.  Maybe that's how they were introducing the line before opening any stores.  But for me, David's just seemed even more luscious and delicious than Mrs. Field's.  Of course both of these brands were among the first purveyors serving fresh warm cookies, and that definitely changed the game.

I recently ate some of the holiday-colored Oreos (the orange Halloween ones) which I thought were delicious.  As far as traditional packaged cookies go, I have no idea what else I'd find appealing, and I'm in no hurry to find out.  If I'm going to binge on store bought cookies, it's invariably going to be a package from the supermarket's bakery, not a brand name package.  Ah, but there's the magic word.  Binge.  That's what cookies are for, right?  And as such, they are something I'd really like to cut down on in 2016.

TOD: In a word: Mom's.

This Christmas she sent a few of my favorites: Zimmsterne (cinnamon stars), Springerle (an anise cookie that gets better with time, so I haven't touched those yet), coconut merengues, chocolate surprise cookies (the surprise is a marshmallow baked into a chocolate peanut butter cookie and then glazed with a mocha frosting), cream cheese cookies and gingerbread.

DR Matthew, when are you heading to London?

Larry - the ticket is for April 2, so I'll probably leave the Monday or Tuesday after Easter (March 27)

I haven't really been to London - I have spent 5 hours there during a trip to Paris, but the terrorists decided that was the day to bomb one of the tube stations, so my day was cut short.

I'm looking forward to seeing what I can see in the little time I have there - see the sites, see some shows, etc.  Looking forward to seeing Phantom and Les Mis - for they would be the mother-ship all of productions, etc.

DR John G - in response to your concern last night about your parents:  It's not easy and, no matter how right you know your actions are, you will feel guilty.  Richard and I were both very fortunate that our mothers made their own decisions about moving to retirement communities and giving up their cars, so I have no insights there.  I will keep you and your sister in my thoughts and prayers as you paddle into these turbulent waters.

Thank you. Dad got his problem with the insurance company straightened out this morning, which is when he seems to be more with it. I'm just afraid his diabetes meds need to be adjusted and no one will ever convey that properly to his doctor. And of course, the general situation changes that occur with aging.

Futzed and finessed quite a bit, and wrote a half a page of new stuff, but the piano tuner is here now so I can't write while he's doing that.  And then I have to go deal with the pension stuff and the El Portal, eat, and then I'll continue on the new pages.  I may decide to wait till the morning to do the pension stuff, since it's in Burbank.

Back from the El Portal, picking up a package, and then a patty melt with fries.  I've written about six pages so far, so I'll take a break now and resume in an hour or so - I'll definitely do four or five more pages and finish the chapter I'm on, then write the beginning of the next chapter.

I love these iced circus animal cookies!  They're definitely on my list.  Other favorite store-bought cookies are pretty much specifically Oreos (just about any version, except peanut butter...those weren't as good as the others. :P ).  It's not that I don't like other store-bought cookies, but Oreos are probably the ones that I would buy before any others.

DR JRand, I suspect you've heard about this awful tragedy that happened not far from you:

4 Brownsburg Teens... (http://wishtv.com/2016/01/03/hundreds-mourn-4-brownsburg-teens-killed-in-crash/)

It weighed heavily on my mind this weekend, because the young man who was driving is a distant cousin on my mother's side.  It breaks my heart to hear his mother Jennifer apologizing to the crowd at last night's candlelight vigil.

I do love those buttery almond cookies that are covered in powered sugar.  I have heard themcalledby different names .  My nana used to make them in a crescent shape and call themchristmascrescents

I have a recipe for Almond Crescents, but usually I make Pecan Snowballs which are similar.

Please make a tin of eAch of them and forward to my address so I make a comparison test

Cookies don't mail well, DR Vixmom, but if you'd care to come here I'd be glad to provide the testing samples!

John I agree with Ginny there is no easy way for that conversation to happen if your parents do not see the need themselves.

I do have a bit of advice for folks who live far away from their aging parents.  If there's a sibling close by who's dealing with them day-to-day, please find a way to be supportive to her or him.  Once in a while my sister sends me some restaurant gift cards or some other surprise to show her appreciation.  Most recently she sent a Secret New York coloring book.  It means a lot.

I agree, Ginny. I was the nearby child taking care of my mother. My sister is across the country.

I completely understand. The closest that Mom and Dad have in my sister Annaliese, who lives about 75 miles away. She's able to visit regularly but not weekly.

I'm really enjoying Alicia Vikander in Testament of Youth, though war movies aren't always what I want to watch -- and this one is really hard hitting.

Well, I need to leave work and go shopping.  I need a new keyboard for my computer.  I have a ergonomic split keyboard, but I don't know if I need another one.  We'll see what I can find.

Until later.

Well, I didn't get another ergonomic split keyboard.  But I didn't get a cheap one, either.  I went to Office Depot and got a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/822843/Logitech-Illuminated-Keyboard-black/).  It was on sale.  Amazon actually has it for the same price, but I didn't have to wait.

It's really cool.  Even though I have a flat (not split) keyboard at work, it'll take a little getting used to having one here at home again.  But I love the illumination.  The lights above my computer desk are in front of me, as I look at my monitor, so my keyboard is in a bit of a shadow.  Having the illumination makes it possible to see the keys and know if I'm aiming and hitting a "(" or a ")" without any more worries. :)

Have started watching The Clouds of Sils Maria. I'm as shocked as anyone that Kristin Stewart is as good as she is here. Who'd a thunk it?

Not a great movie (the script is ragged), but an interesting one.

I'm very fortunate that both my sister and I live within 10 miles of our parents.  They're getting up there, but they're not ready for outside care, yet.

Very.  I like it very much!  The only (minor) thing that I don't like about it is that the Insert key has been moved up to where the Print Screen key should be, and the Print Key is where the Scroll Lock key (which I never use) was.  It looks like there is no Scroll Lock key.

That'll take a little getting used to, but at least the Del, Home and Page Up keys are three across and two down.  My sister has a keyboard where they are two across and three down.  I don't like the keys in those positions. :P

I love pecan snowballs!  Can I come visit on cookie making day?  I probably wouldn't be much help making the cookies, but I would keep the conversation lively.  Oh, and then, if Vixmom is not able to visit, I could take her cookies to her.

Dumb question, I suppose, but why do you want keys that light up?  It has taken me years to break myself of the habit of looking at the keys while I type.  If my keys light up, I would feel obligated to look at the keys again.

It's mainly for when I have things in front of my keyboard and I have to push it back under the desktop making it very difficult to feel which specific key I'm pressing and even more difficult to see which specific key I'm pressing.

This way, when it's difficult to touch-type, I can see what the heck I'm doing, especially in the low light of where my computer desk is.

In my picture, the back row of keys are under the desktop.  The keyboard tray can slide completely under the desktop, storing it out of the way when necessary.  But sometimes I need to have the tray out but push the keyboard itself back so that I have room to put things in front of it, and it's dark back there.

It sounds like you are more likely to need the lighted keyboard at work, rather than at home.

(I originally typed the ignited keyboard.)

I actually thought about that for a bit, but I have much more light at work.  I have a window right behind me.  At home at night, the only light comes from in front of me and the keyboard is hidden by the desktop and everything that's on top of it.  Like the rest of the room, it's very cluttered. ::)
