Yesterday, TCB asked,
Quote
George, have you heard about the play reading of LIFE IS COMPLICATED that Olympia Little Theatre is doing?

Tom, I'd heard about it, and actually was asked to stage manage by the director, but I was already committed to the show I'm working on now, and the scheules overlapped.  Other than that, the only thing I know about the show is that it was written by the current OLT board president.

Yes, the original director had to drop out, and my friend Martin Larson is now directing the reading.  Also, my friend, Sharry, is playing the mother in the reading.

I don't usually remember dreaming but I woke at 5 this morning after a vivid dream of arriving at work  naked beneath my coat, carrying my clothes.  But the parking lot was flooded, two feet deep with hot soapy water and I slipped and dropped my clothes in the waters.

I woke up suddenly , shocked ....and then I remembered  I fell asleep with my clothes in the washer.   So I got up and put them in the dryer.  Hopefully they sure dry now as I must get dressed and head to work

Yesterday was a good day but by the time I left City Center around 2:30, i was mentally exhausted.  It took me about 40 minutes to get to 42nd and 9th Avenue for the Wright State students.  It's interesting to hear what they chose for audition material and how they present themselves after seeing them in class.

There was oe poor decision by a young lady who went for a grungey look: I spent more time looking at the hole in her leggings - at the knee - than it watching her.

So, after that, I spoke to a few and congratulated them, then walked to 41st and 8th Avenue for the 104 bus.

I love probing the sitz.  There, I've said it.  Now you know.  It's good to have it off my chest.

A couple of the regional theaters here combine the first orchestra reading with the sitzprobe, so you have actors running in and out and trying this and that number, and in the meantime the band just isn't up to snuff.  In the end, you get neither a good orchestra rehearsal nor good sitzprobe.  This was the case with the likes of Ragtime and Assassins, which is ridiculous.  There's nothing like getting a good band rehearsal in, and then probing that darn sitz.  Even doing the one right after the other with a short break in between is better.

Last night I did okay on my song!  Or so I was told.  I did ask the music director to record just my part on my phone so I could listen to the notes - I just can't hear them on the CD since two people are singing at the same time throughout most of it.

It's not much a song anyway!

DRs Ginny and Jrand65 --

I was taking a look at the distance between us for a possible meetup next Wednesday, and I hadn't realized that Greencastle (is that exactly where you are, DR Jrand65?) is so far west in the state.  I know you have a rehearsal, and that transportation could be iffy.  What I'd propose is for me to plan on driving over there on my NEXT visit later this summer.  Would that be okay?

This way, I can see DR Ginny on Wednesday, and what I'd like to do after that is head into Columbus for a visit with my aunt and uncle who have been going through some stuff and whom I haven't seen for over a year.  Otherwise, I'd be happy to drive all the way over this time, like, in the morning, and catch DR Ginny later in the day (providing that would have worked for her, of course), but with the aunt and uncle thing, doing all of this in one day will present some challenges.

Let me know how that sounds.  I'll be sorry to miss you this trip but let's plan on doing it right the next time.  And DR Ginny, let me know when and where you'd like to meet on Wednesday.  Shall we do lunch?

Yesterday I mentioned it was difficult getting hired, at seventeen, for my first job because I looked like a baby.

Our friend that we reconnected with sent this photo.  I must have been close to 19.  I can tell because my hair is just growing back after I was given a Twiggy haircut to remove all the dyed blond hair.  I hated being called Twiggy everywhere I went.  Now I wish there had been at least one photo of me with my short cut while it still looked good.

So here is an awful photo of me, with my in-between hairdo, looking rather startled.  I do however, look like a baby.

1971 FOLLIES or 1979 SWEENEY TODD, Sondheim's best scores and Tunick's greatest orchestrations.

Topic of the Day:  Ditto to either of these, but I lean a little more towards FOLLIES, but SWEENEY TODD is a very close second.

Fantastic!  I will look forward to seeing that one of these days.

I didn't meet him, but I was around when he came to Cleveland to guest conduct.  I remember sitting in on at least one rehearsal at Severance Hall when he took the Cleveland Orchestra through the Prologue to Boito's MEFISTOFELE.  I'd listened to the Toscanini recording featuring - what else? - The Robert Shaw Chorale, over and over and over, and boy, was that a treat.

Haven't listened to many of his Atlanta recordings, but I liked his CARMINA BURANA quite a bit.

Far east, Anderson Township, is where I will have been staying and visiting.  But I'll be in the downtown/mid-city area for a little bit that morning, so I can come up either highway.  Doesn't matter at all to me.

How was Sunset Blvd?

Sunset exceeded all expectations.  Stripped down to the music and lyrics which made the storytelling even more powerful.  Glenn was amazing, her vocals were very different from her first go 'round, especially since the CD was made.  I fell in love all over again with her and the piece.

Tomorrow night I am going to see NOISES OFF.

That sounds like fun!  I've never seen it, but I played Tim Allgood in a local production here in Olympia some 20 years ago or so.  Tom, that's where I met Stacie Hart who was in "Last Night of Ballyhoo."
