I'll say one thing about these mono Collins performances - there are none faster - this guy doesn't mess around, never gets ponderous, which others do occasionally - this guy just gets it done and it's really quite refreshing.

One more quick thing:

I just checked the listings for Best Worst Thing... and it's playing yet another glorious week at Lincoln Center.

It's down to three showtimes per day now, and starting Friday it goes to two showtimes.  But ... it's still here.

DR Jane re: your goodreads account and meeting your goal

Even though I have met my goal for this year I am sort of cheating a bit (I really want to beat the amount of books I read last year).  I am going to read some books that are under or around 300 pages.  I am going to read some novellas. And I am going to read some short stories.

I listened to it last night  - haven't heard it since it came out - the music is great but it's just too florid and the lyrics... well.  If you read the reviews on Amazon it's amazing how many accuse Villa-Lobos' only attempt at a musical as something he should never have attempted.  What's wrong with this picture?  First correct answer gets a pat on the back.

I do neither of those things.  I listen, make mental notes, I don't encourage anyone in attendance to give me their thoughts, BUT I tell them what I thought about certain things and we discuss those specific things.  Then I write down notes, but mostly I just know.

I have never tried Sambucol.  I hadn't tried Mucinex either until the doctor said to use it.  I think it has helped.  I know how to battle normal bronchitis but this viral one is a whole new ballgame.  One minute it is like a normal cough that mucinex helps and then it is regular bronchitis that needs a strong cough medicine.  I think I am winning the game and hope no one else gets it.  I hear bad coughs are going around.

Healthy vibes to everyone!!!

Villa-Lobos had nothing to do with the musical.  Robert Wright & George Forrest created it from the music of Villa-Lobos, in the same way they created the shows Song of Norway from the themes of Grieg, and Kismet from Borodin.  They can be considered some of the very first "jukebox musicals."

I wonder if they'll record this:  Jake Gyllenhaal to Sing on Broadway in ‘Sunday in the Park With George’ (http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/jake-gyllenhaal-to-sing-on-broadway-in-%E2%80%98sunday-in-the-park-with-george%E2%80%99/ar-AAlw8UO). :)

Gyllenhaal will re-team with Annaleigh Ashford, with whom he starred in a concert version of the show in October as part of New York City Center's Encores series.

Sarna Lapine will direct the musical, which features a score by Sondheim and a book by James Lapine.

Performances are set to begin February 11, 2017, ahead of an official openinng on February 23. The limited run, which will play through April 23, will mark the reopening of Broadway's historic Hudson Theater on West 44th Street.

Listening to a wonderful compilation of piano music from the cinema (not completely - on the Australian Decca Eloquence label - these remastering are justly praised - every one I've gotten has been superb.  This has all the war horses you'd ever want with an excellent pianist and in wonderful sound - Warsaw Concerto (finally a good version to listen to), Cornish Rhapsody, Spellbound, Rachmaninov's music used in Brief Encounter, Dream of Olwen, Rhapsody in Blue (a bit of a stretch but well done), and others.  I'm a sucker for all this stuff, most in the style of Rachmaninov.

Dance competition Friday. Not ready. But am I ever?

I am dancing better, which means I still have more to do, learn and digest before getting out on the floor.

Well, because I came into work early, I can leave work early.  I want to do a little shopping, then I'll head home.

Be back later.

Listening to the three Rachmaninov symphonies with a conductor I've never heard of but which is part of that Australian Eloquence series - and the sound is fantastic and I have to say the performances of the first two symphonies are really top drawer.  The first symphony is especially good here in a way I haven't quite heard before - I haven't heard all that many firsts, but I kind of like this better than the Ormandy and the Previn versions.

After I finish the second, I'll go watch Fences.  The more I read about Hacksaw Ridge the less I want to watch it - apparently it's the standard Mel Gibson bathing in extreme guts and blood - he loves this stuff and the gorier the better - I hate that crap.

I'm starting to watch an old holiday weepie that I love. It's The Gathering with Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton.

Watched the first half of Fences.  Pure unadulterated Oscar-bait filmmaking.  Mr. Washington did this on Broadway recently, and then he managed to get the dough to do a film.  It's instructive to watch James Earl Jones do one of the famous speeches on the Tonys (on You Tube) - his performance is so fierce and brilliant - then you watch Mr. Washington do the same speech from the revival and it gets - wait for it - laugh after laugh.  Mr. Jones doesn't get any laughs - in fact you can hear a pin drop.  I thought I was watching Neil Simon.  I'm not sure I blame Mr. Washington as much as the incredibly stupid audience, but it's not directed well or I don't think it would get laughs.

I think it best to wait until after I see FENCES to compare.  I want to like the movie.

I'm not saying the movie gets laughs as I'm not watching it with people.  But the scene in the revival is a comedy scene instead of the powerful scene it is in James Earl Jones' hands.  I wonder if Mr. Washington directed the revival.  If not, I wonder if all these performances he's getting credited for directing were, in fact, directed by someone else.

That didn't come out right.  He would be more worried about my spine disintegration than he would be worried that I was becoming a drug addict.

Oh, OK.  It is not getting worse?  It is the same bad as it has been and will stay this way until a better treatment is found?
