Happy Birthday DR ChasSmith 🎂

Well, I need to go to sleep. It was snowing earlier. I looked a little bit ago and couldn't tell if it was still snowing, but either way, I'll need to scrape the snow and/or ice off my car in the morning.
Good night, all. 8)

Happy happy birthday to dear DR ChasSmith!

So, what's up for today?
At ten I need to call the Abbey and reserve some cheese if they have any. It's always in demand, but even more so as Christmas approaches, and I want to get a block of it for the holidays. If they do, I'll be making a quick run up up there. Then I have a short rehearsal in the early afternoon, and that's about it before enjoying a li'l birthday repast here at the house tonight.
-
The amount of classical music BK has been listening to is incredible. I love reading about it, but even that is overwhelming. I've barely had the chance to listen to anything this past week, and next week will be even crazier.
-
So, it's Arctic Blast time.
Our highs today and tomorrow are in the 22-24 degree (Fahrenheit!) range, with the overnight low down to 6 degrees tonight.
Saturday morning, a few inches of snow -- again, followed by rain and a warming up to the low 50s on Sunday. One day only. Crazy stuff, man.
Thus concludes the morning weather report.
-
Happy Birthday to CHASSMITH!

Happy Birthday to CHASSMITH!

So, Kay Cole was in the national company of THE MUSIC MAN with Forrest Tucker and Joan Weldon?
I saw that production when it played the now long gone Orpheum Theater in Seattle.

Good morning, all!

I slept late and wish I had stayed longer in bed.

Tomorrow is a but crazy for me: physical therapy at 9:00, then a meeting on The New Yorkers at City Center. I'll be happy to get home. So, I'm staying inside today.

Today, i have more work on The New Yorkers and some new numbers for the P-C of Guys & Dolls have come in. I will hold off on thise until the weekend.

No Cheese at the Abbey is the title of my upcoming post-apocalyptic young adult thriller about a family of annoying singers in Vermont.
-
Saw Fences on Broadway with Billy Dee Williams and twice in a regional production with an amazing John Amos. The beauty of the scene is that it played differently every time depending on the audience. Williams was light and he got laughs, especially from the black men in the audience who were on Troy's side, even at the end of the play. And they were loud, too. They talked back to the play. Amos on opening night played to a white audience who were spellbound and quiet as this scene progressed. Later that month, Amos drew laughs but they were uncomfortable.
I wish I had seen James Earl Jones, who has that Darth Vader gravitas about him. Amos probably came closer than Washington who is probably better than Williams.
-
Im a big August Wilson fan. Saw the out-of-town tryout of Two Trains Running and the Broadway production of Joe Turner's Come and Gone. I would love to see any of the other works in the cycle.
-
Thursday morning greetings! Cold and sunny here in SW Ohio...

Happiest of birthdays, DR ChasSmith!
No Cheese at the Abbey is the title of my upcoming post-apocalyptic young adult thriller about a family of annoying singers in Vermont.
LOL - I was trying to think up something along these lines myself.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep thanks to the damn insufferable hammering, which is relentless.

Reading about these comparisons is very interesting.

DR Chas you should have been able to buy the cheese you want on your birthday ;)

Happiest of Birthdays and Friday Cheese Vibes for DR CHAS SMITH.

Since I didn't go do my errands on Monday and the snow kept me home on Tuesday AND company kept me home yesterday, I had to go shopping & Banking today. The temperature was 5 degrees with a wind chill of -8.....but it warmed up as the sun rose. I didn't leave the house until almost 10 a.m. so I had to deal with larger shopping crowds than usual......

UNSUNG SHERMAN BROTHERS
I liked it so much, I had to say it again.
-
I spent about 14 weeks of my life in a production of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM.....it lasted so long, I ended up played BOTH of the white man parts....then it was brought back.
It was not my most pleasant experience - and I didn't see my face in the makeup mirror for 14 weeks, but the audiences were fine.....they did talk back....the play starts with a 10 minute scene between the two white guys - which I thought was odd....but ALL during the run, people were coming in during that scene and getting settled....EVERY NIGHT....EVERY MATINEE...
-
I had to make an emergency trip to the pharmacy for Sambucol. I canceled the amazon order once I was told it would not arrive fr two weeks. WTF?
I have taken my first tablet and waiting for wonders. It's mighty cold out there today!
-
Good vibes it works DR elmore!
-
I am going to try not taking the musinex today, dropping from two doses of the inhaler to one, and staying with a small dose of the cough medicine tonight. It does have musinex in it for the expectorant. I think it will be enough. I have high hopes that this will not turn in to chronic bronchitis.

DR George have you been able to try your new umbrella?
I haven't received it yet. According to my account, "Items [are] being prepared by supplier." :-\
-
That's a pretty greeting DR JANE.
Vibes that your medicine works for you!

The hammering finally stopped around ten-forty - I got another hour of sleep, promptly. I really was on the verge of going out in the yard and screaming my guts out at these people.

I know, but I am wondering about that "supplier" unless you mean the company that makes them.

Not that appearing in MRBB was ALL bad.....there were some fun folks in the show.....
And one weekend William (Blacula) Marshall was in town, and the rumor was that he was going to come to to show.
I was sitting backstage in the dressing room during the second act....
The dressing room (only one for all of us in those days) with a curtain at the opening rather than a door. The curtain was suddenly flung aside and there stood....Blacula! He said "Where's the restroom?"
I didn't feel I should tell him he needed to go back through the theatre and across the lobby....so I directed him to the cast restroom...he was in there a few minutes, came out, said "Thank you" and exited......

-
I know, but I am wondering about that "supplier" unless you mean the company that makes them.
Yes. I bought it from a website, www.touchofmodern.com (you have to create an account to even see what's on the website), that sells only new high-end items at up to 70% off, but they're only available for five days. After that, the deal ends and it may or may not ever show up on their site again. The umbrellas that I bought are brand new and being sold through www.touchofmodern.com and they get the items from the manufacturers. :)
-
Speaking of MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM and FENCES - have I noted yet in 2016 that August Wilson's real first name was Freddie?
-
Great stories of MRBB. I was a fan of Blacula way back in the day (a Bright Star reference), but it has been so long since I've seen any of those movies that I have no memory for them.
-
Then hopefully they will send you your umbrella soon, not that you will be using it in the snow :)

We went bowling for our team year-end party. It was fun.

Druxy, did you see the streaming live concert that Elmore went to a couple of days ago? I was able to capture the saved broadcast afterward and made a DVD of it. :)

Great stories of MRBB. I was a fan of Blacula way back in the day (a Bright Star reference), but it has been so long since I've seen any of those movies that I have no memory for them.
"Blacula" was on TCM earlier this year, and I actually recorded it and made a DVD of it! ;D

Thanks! I'll ALWAYS need an umbrella. I have three now, but this was interesting and fun enough that I decided to get it just for fun.

I just finished "Where Have You Been?," and tomorrow I'm sure Rob will have something new for me. Now that Joshie's back, we have to get him busy as well.

You are welcome DR Chas. I hope you are enjoying your special day.
-
DR FJL - yes Fred Wilson......I think MRBB is my favorite of his plays, although I like most of them.....
LOL DR JOHN G - I had seen the movie on TV about a month before, so it was a bit of shock to me....but funny in retrospect.
-
Fingers crossed DR CHAS SMITH.

Back from a nice lunch (chicken strips, a few fries - very few - and a little side salad), and picking up a couple of packages that didn't include the four CDs that are "out for delivery" via USPS, who was already there and delivered one package. It is not in their nature to return, so I'm on the phone with Amazon finding out what's what because this is happening way too often.
-
Good afternoon.

Only one jello salad at the women's salad luncheon.

Happy Birthday, ChasSmith!

Happy, Happy Birthday, DR ChasSmith!!!

Listening to two great cello concertos by Villa-Lobos. Great music.
-
The packages that were "out for delivery" were not, in fact, out for anything. Hopefully they'll be here tomorrow - if not, Amazon will fully refund and send new copies and have already given me a promotional credit. Two day delivery should mean two days, not three. The USPS of course takes no responsibility for their ineptitude, and it IS their ineptitude.
-
Hello, everyone.

Happy Birthday to DR Chas!!
Hope you've had a great day!

Larry, you know to not take water or anything with it, right? It's sublingual--you just let it dissolve under your tongue. The rule of thumb is nothing to eat or drink 10 minutes before or after.

You're only four in HHW years? I would have thought you've been here longer.

Reading this makes me shiver. And we think it is cold in the Pacific Northwest. I stayed inside today, mostly because of the ice and my cough. I will walk again tomorrow.
My cough is much better. I just figured I needed a break from breathing the cold air.

Hello, 0 Guests!
-
Where is everybody?
-
Has vixmom been here at all this week?
-
I hope she is okay.

Amusingly, the packages showed up about an hour after I got off the phone with Amazon and the USPS - coincidence? I think the USPS woman told us all kinds of untruths, got the driver on the phone or spoke to him and had him go back to the UPS store. So, I got everything and spent the evening listening to everything or mostly everything.
-
I guess I missed the story behind George's umbrella. What makes this umbrella special?
-
One of the things I got, a 2-CD set of Bernard Herrmann's Phase 4 albums remastered on the Eloquence series - the Hitchcock one and the British film music one (which has one additional track from his Shakespeare album) - I used to love these Phase 4 Herrmann records, but hearing them now? They're so dry - there's no air at all - it's amazing to hear, actually. Of course everything is close-miked and in an airless studio, which is the problem. But a little natural verb on these and it would be a whole different story. I may send a couple of these tracks to my engineer - have him put our favored verb on them, and then let people contrast and compare - purists, of course, will want exactly what was released, but we know how that went for the original Follies cast album vs. the remix we did. That said, these remasterings are better than any of the many CD releases these two albums have had, and I have every one of the incarnations. Some of the obnoxious shrillness of the album masters has been smoothed over so that sounds better, and it's just a better sound overall. Happy to have gotten this no matter the problems inherent in the recording itself. It does sound like you're standing on the podium with Mr. Herrmann. A little bit of space, that's all you need.
-
I also got the Ashkenazy Rachmaninov set - these are the MOST raved about recordings and, of course, they are all my least favorites. They're not bad, but I don't love the sound, and the performances are not as interesting as any of the others I've been hearing - in fact, this is the first recording of the second symphony that I could live without - the others all have their interest. Well, not quite true - another raved about recording that was actually given away for free with the BBC Music magazine is absolutely horrible - far away sound, no detail, no feeling, no nothing. Back on the shelf it went and out of iTunes it went. And I got some concert music by Mrs. William Alwyn, Doreen Carwithen, since I'd enjoyed her film music so much - and these pieces, a piano concerto and assorted others, are wonderful.
-
I also listened to Paul Paray's Rachmaninov second, one of those Mercury Living Presence things from the 1950s - good clean sound, but again a very dry acoustic which does not serve anything well. It's a wonderful performance though, and the detail in the orchestration is so clear that I heard things I haven't heard before, inner lines that are really lovely.
-
Also, William Steinberg conducting Robert Russell Bennett's lovely symphonic poems on Stephen Foster and Jerome Kern.
-
In other words, lots o' music.
