Well, you've read the notes, the notes were independent, and now it is time for you to post until the independent cows come home.

What are you doing today, George?

Well, I was going to go to my parents' but my sister practically begged me to install more light fixtures in either or both of her houses and help with more moving stuff, so I probably won't have time to go to my parents'.  She's moving back into her previous house that she still owns and had rented out, but now she wants to sell the house that she's been living in for the last eight or nine years.

Today is also Tumwater's 4th of July Parade, so if I don't leave my condo complex by 10:30 at the latest, the road will be blocked until about 1:00 pm.

Not that it is any of my business, but does her boyfriend ever help with any of these home projects?

Oh, yes, and her daughter too, but none of them have removed and installed light fixtures, and she just needs (wants) the extra help for moving really heavy things.

I have to be out of here soon, and will be out most of the day.

I'm spending the morning at the Norwalk Aquarium, of all places.  Go figure.  Or go know.  (Your choice.)  I haven't been there in several years and I've wanted to see the place, and see their original IMAX theater that still stands (not for long, sadly) and still runs 70mm IMAX film.  I can walk in free with a friend who's a volunteer, so hey, today works, and why not?

Then this evening is my other friend's annual Fourth blast, with great foodstuffs and real fireworks they bring over from Pennsylvania.  I used to always assume (and we know what that means) that they brought them up from the Carolinas or someplace down south, but I asked last year and it's only an hour away, right across the PA state line!  Go figure.  Or go know.

I'll try to find a photo or two - that I THINK might exist - of one of my memorable Fourths.  It's going to take some looking, as they probably exist on slides which will have to be scanned.  That part's easy.  It's the finding them that might be daunting.  So, probably not today.  But soon.

Don't forget that before the parade passes by: you gotta get in step while there's still time left
and then be ready to move out in front because life without life has no reason or rhyme left.
You'll wanna hold your head up high. You'll need a goal again. You'll need a drive again. So that you're will heart start coming alive again. Before that  parade passes by.

In anticipation of the many many animals that will become lost this evening as a result of the fireworks, the county pound waived adoption fees to clear out the kennels.

I thought about it, but decided not to. I'll never find another cat as wonderful as Joshie.

I'm up, I'm up - sort of.  Probably six hours of sleep, but Sprinkler Man is here - turns out the gardener turned on this thing that has the leak and forgot to turn it off.  I'd asked that yahoo to fix it in the first place and he wouldn't - had to be someone else.  So, he's putting a new valve on so the leak won't be a problem and I'll just deduct it along with the first cost from the rent.  It's only seventy-five bucks.

Independence Day greetings!  Last night Richard and I went over to the former site of Middletown Regional Hospital, the highest point in town, and watched our local fireworks show along with many other displays that we could see in the distance.  The local show, which originated in Smith Park, began with skydivers carrying flares and setting off fireworks as they descended.  That was very cool!

Yesterday I went to BJ's.  (It's like Costco) after work.  They had $4 off coupons for the dishwasher tablets I use and if you bought 2 you got 25 cents off per  gallon at their gas station.  I was running on empty so that worked up quitenicely, I paid only $1.94 a gallon for 17.03 gallons , my local gas station is charging $2.49

I'm trying to do an online preview of some highlights from my newest book of parody lyrics, which is "More About the Donald!  Sung to the Oldies."

It'll be interesting to see if giving some of it away this way winds up with more people than usual eventually buying the book. (or maybe less people, who ever knows.)

That was probably the best thing you could have done considering the circumstances.  When it became apparent my dad was no longer safe behind the wheel we persuaded him to "lend" it to  the Vixter (whom he adored)  so she could get to work and school

We had a similar experience with my Mom.  She gave us her car for Rob, when he was about to start his first college co-op, in exchange for the golf cart we bought for her to tootle around the retirement community.  She's been asking recently what happened to her car and lamenting that she had a lot of friends as long as she could drive them around.

DR Laura do you plan to foster kittens again?

I don't know. I've thought about it. The room they would be in is pretty much a storage room now.

Also, I have discovered some new cats in the back yard. There were two toms, but I have seen some small adults that are ear-tipped, meaning they have been spayed/neutered. I learned from Nextdoor.com that a nearby neighbor has trapped and neutered a few.

There are also kittens. Sandra wants to catch them and keep them. I don't know. I have appointments at the clinic to take them to be fixed if I can catch them.

I have no memory of anything "special" that happened on the 4th of July.

Some fireworks, yes, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I am happy to announce the publication of my new novel by BearManor Media.

This one had a long gestation.  I conceived the idea almost 2 decades ago, originally as a screenplay.  At some point, it transformed into a novel, but that also took a few years to finish.

Set in the 1970s, JACKIE GOES TO DIXIE is about Jackie Moss, a brash, Jewish Las Vegas comedian who is, by mistake, booked to do a one-night gig deep in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.  The mountain folk, who were expecting a popular country-western singer named Jake Moss, are certainly disappointed.  Indeed, the question now becomes: Can Jackie and his pianist, Dave Arthur, get out of this situation alive?

I'm very pleased with this work, and I hope you will give it a read.

Below are the links to the book trailer and the Amazon website where you can purchase JACKIE GOES TO DIXIE in either a paperback or Kindle edition.

TOD:

When I was seven, we went to visit Mom's side of the family in Germany. It included a trip to Heidelberg for a few days and happened to be over the Fourth of July. The castle there was lit up with the most spectacular fireworks show I've ever seen. And there were a few people who loudly went "oooh," "aaaaah," "eeeee" and "ohhhhhh" for the entire show. It made us laugh and we still do it.

As we were going over Mom's decades of postcards that she collected, we found several of Heidelberg and we all started up with the chorus of "ooooh" and "aaaaah" all over again.

Good luck with catching them all, and to Sandra on socializing the kittens so they are adoptable.

Watching a TV show/documentary on Hogarth. I guess It's rather related to the day as I first learned of his work when we saw it in Williamsburg, Va. It was used to mix in with all the "authentic replicas" of furniture and knickknacks. The pictures were infinitely more interesting than anything else we saw.

Watching Follies in Concert. There's a great scene where Barbara Cook gets up to sing "In Buddy's Eyes" and everyone in the rehearsal room is fixated on her. Lee Remick is on the verge of tears. The younger performers are glued to her. And then there's Elaine Stritch off in a corner with a cigarette in her mouth and she's distracted by her shoes or something. She's not paying attention to anything.

Listening to the marvy music of Borodin.  It's fun because you get to constantly realize where Wright and Forrest "borrowed" from to make the score to Kismet.  Was listening to the string quartet number two and suddenly I'm hearing And This is My Beloved.  But the symphonies (two and the incomplete third) are fantastic.  I'd got two sets of them - Neemi Jarvi was the one everyone raved about and I got it, but like most of the Jarvi I hear, I'm not that fond of it, especially compared to the full throttle, exciting and lush performance in the other set from Melodiya, conducted by Svetlanov.  I also have two other performances of the second symphony that I enjoy.  The Jarvi does have the orchestration that was done for the third movement of the string quartet (And This is My Beloved), so that's nice.  But for recommendations it's the Svetlanov.  The two quartets are on a cheap Eloquence disc.

The garden was glad to get a second watering today. Most of the plants survived, but several didn't. I think my oregano is dead. It was time for the marigolds; it's just too hot. But the tomatillo is surprisingly resilient. I don't know if there will be any fruit, but the leaves are coming back.

The habanero is covered with ripe fruit. I need to harvest them tonight.

On the way back yesterday, I listened to the new Stephen King novella, Gwendy's Button Box. Decent little story, nicely read.

The other book was called House of Names by Colm Tobin, the man who wrote Brooklyn. It's a retelling of the Oresteia. Very good, but not great. The three narrators were all British or Irish, and sadly they pronounced "guards" and "gods" the same way: "gawds." That wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact that the author used both words liberally.

I remember reading the Oresteia back in ninth grade and being taken with the bloody tale of Clytemnestra killing husband Agamemnon before son Orestes kills mom. Such passion, such hate, such gore.

I was going through some books earlier and found a Ted Hughes translation of the Oresteia. Guess I know what I'm going to read when I finish Proust.

On Sunday, I made a combined birthday dinner for Mom and Dad. I made garlic-stuffed lamb, which is one of his favorites, as well as some oven-roasted Greek potatoes with garlic and oregano as well as a Greek salad and some snap peas with garlic.

You are a good son
I dunno. I took their car.

It was difficult for me to deal emotionally with my father's dementia, yet he never made heartbreaking comments like this.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, DR Jane.

When Rob visited her while I was in Chicago, she asked him if he had a girlfriend.

I'd like to see a version of Uber or Lyft geared to older or disabled folks. Both Uber and Lyft have time limits on how long a passenger can take to get to the car. I know I need a few minutes to maybe put on a jacket, lock up, and make it down the stairs. That said, my two experiences with Lyft were quite positive. I'd like to see them branch out a bit for those who need a little extra assistance.

John G, how are your parents doing? Apart from driving, are they able to get around OK?

I'm sure they loved the nice dinner you prepared for them.

Mom is still going strong. Some mix of anger, bile and venom keeps her going. She did a yard project recently that is far beyond a woman of her age, but she said she channeled all the anger she felt at her past into it. In a way, it's really rather sad.

Dad is now a prisoner of his diabetes meds, some of which leave him suffering memory loss. It is dementia, but it's still fairly early and only when his blood sugar gets out of whack. It happened once while I was there. He was having a conversation with my sister Linda and forgot who she was.

Linda now seems to be taking the lead on the housing situation. She was going to talk with a real estate agent about what they might get for the house, which needs work. I hope it works. My mom is usually opposed to such things and might have a fit when it happens.

Linda also forced Mom to realize that Dad and she would likely have to leave Louisville when the house is sold, a move that really saddened Mom. But Mom did agree that they don't have many friends left, so they would do best to go to Lexington, San Antonio or Richmond, where one of their kids lives. She chose Richmond. Honestly, I don't think my dad cares, though he was sad to see his car go.

Excellent production of Follies with Brent Barrett giving a really fine performance as Ben. His Live, Laugh, Love was great. But it was the very dead voice of Sally saying a flat, "It is tomorrow" at the end that really gave me shivers.

They won't be adoptable unless we keep them. The foster kittens we had in the past belonged to the shelter. These would be mine. They will be fixed and returned to the yard. I may see if one of them might be calm enough to be tamed. I don't know.

Factor's Deli, where BK, Jane and Keith, and I had dinner was quite good, I thought.

I am still enjoying my rye bread.

It is sad about your mother's anger.  Good vibes selling the house and moving goes well.  Is your mother able to help your father keep track of his sugar levels?

On the 4th of July I always recall walking to Rancho Park, going on the rides, and then watching the fireworks.

John, the hot pepper plants I planted over a year ago keep producing. I give them all away. I can't grow anything that I myself would eat -- it all dies.

That is sad. I'm getting ready for the pickling. But I have to finish up a couple of cleaning projects I started first. And the Negroni that I treated myself to.

I've never heard of anyone growing their own tomatillos. Do many people in your area grow them?

I love verde sauce. I recall my days in San Diego when I obtained a recipe for a restaurant's verde sauce and looked high and low for tomatillos in the grocery stores.  I probably could have grown my own then, but it never occurred to me.

I don't know. I had never grown them until this year. But whether I get a single fruit from the plant, I won't care. It's beautiful. The fruit look like Japanese lanterns and it's covered with gorgeous little yellow flowers. I think the fruit are gone, though from the week's neglect.

Lovely photos from DR GINNY.

I can see the town fireworks that go the highest over the trees....the event is about a mile and half away.....

Precious is completely uninterested in the noise.....she certainly has no problem with her hearing....she can hear the refrigerator door open two rooms away.....but she is the least curious dog I have ever known.

Darling Daughter arrived a bit earlier than expected.  We drove around trying to decide on what to eat and where.  We drove for about forty minutes before I suggested the Smoke House - we called, it was open, and there we went.  She had the shrimp louis, I had fish and chips and a salad and we shared the garlic cheese bread.

Have you ever heard of The New American Theatre (formerly Circus Theatricals) in LA.  The have a contest going:
HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE GUIDELINES ALERT:
**The New American Theatre reserves the right to not choose any entries for production, without a refund.
And then this pair of Catch 22 guidelines:
**By submitting a script and paying the entrance fee, it is assumed that the playwright agrees to the festival guidelines.
**The New American Theatre reserves the right to change the rules of the festival at any time.
