Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Backstage at Kritzerland, and now it is time for you to post until the backstage cows come home.

On Friday, a package from Amazon was supposed to be delivered, but I left work early, and even when the delivery person came to my work, no one was there to receive the package.  It should be delivered today.

Yesterday I stopped working on my orchestration around 1:00, because I was so sleepy.  By 5:00 I was convinced I was getting sick, and after I gave the cats their evening treats at 6, I was sure I was either coming down with the flu or Covid-19.  I was in bed by 7:30, and I had a very restless night of sleep.  Annabelle stayed with me all night, and Thatch moved in sometime around 1:00am.

I'm sorry I missed last night's Kritzerland epic, but I will try to get to it sometime today.  My priority is to finish as much of the orchestration as possible since I would like it completed by tomorrow.  At 11:15 I have a virtual appointment with my doctor about my knee and hip issues, and my fifth floor neighbor Ann and I have a lunch date.

I’ve always wished I could remember more about my first viewing of Topaz. I was in school then and only went once. I didn’t see it again until watching it on network television a few years later, and then a screening or two at Hitchcock festivals around LA. And I never had that early VHS copy.

Here’s my question:  In those times I saw it at theaters, would it always have been the original theatrical cut? Were any film releases ever conformed to the home video releases? I should sure as hell hope not, but I had to ask.

I have a few art prints mixed in with everything else around the house. Degas, Seurat, Ansel Adams, Miro. I also have a few originals, including works by my friend, Tracy Ashenfelter, who’s work is kinda like a stoned Dr. Seuss. Whimsical. Satirical.

I also have an autographed Rauschenburg poster.

I have very few actual art books. I used to own some nice ones but I found I hardly ever opened them so they went to better homes. What few I have now tend to be more contemporary or commercially oriented, such as a few Disney books, the Ed Ruscha Hollywood Blvd. book, books of movie posters and album covers, that kind of thing.

As for art pieces themselves, I love the relatively minor but colorful Picasso exhibition lithograph I got at a live auction for something like $25 some years ago. It has a bit of water damage along its bottom edge which is not a distraction.

I especially treasure the three Harvey Schmidt pieces acquired from BK via Indiegogo campaigns.

A few signed movie posters and lobby cards are likewise treasured items.

Back to Topaz for a moment:

I'd read about the lack of a theatrical cut in the past, and never followed up on it, so now I've done just that. The laserdisc release is the 2:07 running time, and I went to eBay and bought one. It's going to be one of the older and more primitive LDs:  full screen (probably pan & scan), and no chapter stops except for alternate endings (but it looks like the US one is the default). So, no great viewing experience in store, except that I'll be able to see the theatrical cut.

Good Morning!  I'm off work today, so I'm home working instead.  I've decided to listen to a recording of The Pirates of Penzance - and not the Papp version.  I was hoping to get some packing done yesterday - but I didn't. I after the Kritzerland event, I started watching "Cobra Kai" on Netflix and was totally hook and finished Season One before bed.

I'm hoping to get my week prepared for school, go on a bike ride a little after noon, and perhaps start some packing.  I'm hoping the motivation will be there once I get started.

Well there you are.

Today I went to Dollar Tree looking for some fake mistletoe for a prop for my scene in A Christmas Carol.

I forgot to put on my mask.  I was walking back out to get it when I saw Dawn the manager - that I've spoken to before.  I told her I was going out to get my mask.  She said:  "That's okay.....you can keep shopping.  Just don't say anything to me and let me get my work done."

Okay.....so now I am of two minds.  Perhaps I shall never go into the store again.....OR I will go in every day this week.  I am still contemplating.

I have a few art books.  But most of my B I G books are about architecture....

However - at the Goodwill I found a book that is from the New York Graphic Society.....I guess they sold fine art reproductions.

The book is full of 4"x6" reproductions of famous paintings. Their prints were quite reasonably priced.....$2 - $18 or so.

Today (because I finally remembered to check on it) I learned that in CT my absentee ballot can be tracked.

That might be the case in most states, but ours is one that doesn't tell you that up front.

All I had to do was look up my voter registration. The resulting screen shows that, plus the date my application was processed and the date the ballot was received. YAY!!

Re Topaz - the only way it's ever been shown in theaters is the release version of 127 minutes.  I'm sure there was exactly one print of the preview version.  The alternate endings have been on every home video release, including the Blu-ray, so yes, I've seen them all.

DR singdaw, I think it was yesterday that you mentioned Patricia Routledge's singing career.  In 1978 she sang the title role in Offenbach's La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein for the Camden Festival, several Gilbert & Sullivan mezzo roles for the BBC, and the Old Lady in the Scottish Opera production of Candide when it played the Old Vic in London.  I wish there were a video of that.

Bruce I posted this yesterday while you were busy.  Do you have any advice for my cousin?

I have a question regarding book ratings on Amazon.  My cousin wrote a book called #80: And Other Dog Stories, #80 referring to the identification number of a dog she rescued.

After reading my cousin's post on FB today I am confused about the ratings.  I thought Amazon was rather strict and only those that purchased the books from Amazon could give them a rating.  Maybe, someone/Bruce can explain this to me.

"As much as I would love it, not everyone is going to like me our like what I do. That is a fact. So today when I looked and saw I had a 3 star review on Goodreads, I had a sad face. It goes along with a 4 star review on Goodreads. Goodreads is owned by Amazon, so those stars appear on Amazon.  73 five stars, a 4 star and a 3 star.  The 4 star person was kind enough to write something and I appreciate those words. 3 star person, not one word. It is hard to learn to improve without a few words.
So, I have a frowny face this morning. But there is nothing I can do about it. I am not going to re-write the book (although I seriously thought about it) It does not discount the 73 fantastic reviews. Some are not going to like my book and that is going to have to be OK."

Turns out food was delivered at 4:45, an hour after I ordered it - but the idiot driver, who is not only supposed to and required to text me when he leaves food, as well as ring the doorbell, did none of those things.  Therefore, the hot sandwich sat out there for twenty minutes - I finally tracked it via Grubhub and saw it was delivered.  Needless to say, sandwich was cold, not hot.  I had a "chat" session from Grubhub and they gave me a code to save ten bucks from my next order, so that's good.

Jane, send this to your cousin:

I have been trying for a month to understand how there can be stars on Amazon but no review - so, that problem is solved but they should NOT be doing that - using Goodreads stars on Amazon.  They are NOT the same site.  And yes, you're not always going to get five-star reviews, much as we all want those.  In the end, if you're going to love the five-star reviews, you have to accept the others.  On one of my Adriana Hofstetter mysteries, some fifteen-year-old girl gave me a one-star review because she didn't buy the character because the character (fifteen, also) calls her mother "mommy."  Well, lots of fifteen year olds call their mother mommy I hate to tell this kid.  And while the temptation was strong to really take her to task for her inane review, I resisted it and Goodreads recommends not interacting with your reviewers.  Don't ever consider rewriting anything you're happy with because some stranger says something.  It is YOU that has to be happy - if YOU are then everything else is what it is and you accept the good with the bad.

I found out today that I will have to have an additional surgery - for something utterly unrelated. I have been getting chronic nose bleeds. Today, I finally was able to get in to see the ENT doctor, who found a growth near my sinuses that needs to come out. She said that these growths are almost always benign, so that is good.

I can also see how it would be more fun with more than 2 players.

I found out today that I will have to have an additional surgery - for something utterly unrelated. I have been getting chronic nose bleeds. Today, I finally was able to get in to see the ENT doctor, who found a growth near my sinuses that needs to come out. She said that these growths are almost always benign, so that is good.

Scary news, but glad they caught it. When is it going to happen?

At Christmas he was still too young to "get" opening presents.

He learned today.

Nice. He'll be asking for a credit card before you know it.

There was just DH and I, and Mama's aunt and uncle. So a very small gathering. Sandra couldn't get the day off work.

Poor Sandra.  I didn't realize she had family here.  That is nice.

Darn, as if you haven't had enough lately.  At least the outcome should be good.  I hope you don't have to wait too long to have the surgery.

Listened to a short Jack London novel called The Scarlet Plague today. It was set about 50 years from now, 60 years after a plague wiped out civilization. It may have been the scariest of all the pandemic novels I've picked up this year, because when the virus hits, the yahoos know they're going to die, so they plan on taking out everyone else they can and destroy everything they can. It's too close to the mask-less attitude for comfort.

Yikes!  The three-part Justar Journal that I finished not too long ago was set 90 years in the future, after a pandemic took out five billion people and left only three billion.  The trilogy isn't about that per se, but it's talked about during the books.

Jane, the "illustrated" edition is a Project Guttenberg edition, and it turns out that there are no actual illustrations in the downloaded epub book that I got. :P

The other edition that my library has  is a "Duke classics" edition and is formatted much better.  If you can get that edition, I'd recommend that as opposed to the Project Guttenberg edition.
