Title: THE SOPRANO, THE BASSO PROFUNDO, AND THE TESSIE TURA
Post by: bk on December 11, 2020, 12:11:06 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sung by a soprano, a basso profundo, and had a Tessie Tura, and now it is time for you to post until the profundo cows come home.

Must say, I'm finding Lenny over the top in Der Rosenkavalier and his humming is most annoying.  He's just relentless.  von Karajan is not like this at all.

I turned off the lights at 8:30 and slept very solidly until 2:00.  Then it was fitful sleep aggravated by Stella's comings and goings.  I had a horrible nightmare: I was working on a production with Rob Berman, and it was a revival of a 20s or 30s show in which the producer had brought in songwriters to add to the score. We had just listened to a new song and I said something along the lines of "those last bars sound nothing like the actual songs in the show" when I noticed flames outside the window. We were working in a building next to the theatre where we were opening.

It turns out there was a serious fire on the floor below us, and we had to evacuate.  I couldn't find Annabelle, Thatch, or Stella, so I was panicking.  We couldn't take the stairs so we had to take the elevator, and the ride was endless.  Inside the building we appeared to be somewhere above the fifth floor of a building, but when I was outside the building in the dream, it was only a 3-storey building. Inside the building, there were more than three floors.

I was checking out the damage and hoping that the cats had made it out.  Annabelle turned up in fine fettle; Stella was alive, but most of her tail was burned off; and I found Thatch in the debris of our office.  He had lost an eye, and he might have been blind in the one remaining, and his coat was burned.  When I picked him up, he fought me, and that's when I woke.

BK, that Karajan recording of Der Rosenkavalier is my favorite, but it does have cuts, as I discopvered when I tried to follow it with my vocal score.  The Solti recording is complete, and it has the late great Regine Crespin as The Marschallin, who is almost as good as Schwarzkopf on the EMI.  It's better than Bernstein.

To continue my harping, BK, I think you will love Weinberger's Schwanda the Bagpiper, which swept the world until the Nazis shut it down and Weinberger excaped to the USA. This SONY recording is wonderful, with three perfect leads.

Last night Singdaw posted

“Watching an interesting documentary on Amazon Prime called "Gatsby in Connecticut." It's sort of a literary sleuthing story positing that the setting of Gatsby was actually inspired by Westport, CT (my old stomping ground) rather than Long Island”

I refuse to believe it! I also demand that “Jaws” is really based on Long Island.

In fact all stories everywhere are really based on Long Island

Falstaff is my favorite Verdi opera and the tunes fly fast and furious. Bernstein's recording was my first, and it remains my favorite.  I also like the Karajan-EMI with Schwarzkopf and Moffo and Solti's first with Robert Merrill and Mirella Freni.

And I have three favorite videos of live performances of Falstaff and the movie version, conducted by Solti.  It's a comic opera that does a brilliant job of condensing Shakespeare's sprawling Merry Wives of Windsor.

The German film is the same team that produced a wonderful Hansel and Gretel you might enjoy.

Adding songs by new writers to an old show sounds like the additions to "Seven brides for Seven Brothers" - though I guess that was more recent than the time if the show in the dream.

The Karajan Rosenkavalier is the one I listened to in the 1970s, playing it over and over. It was the stereo Angel recording, and I never knew of its mono-only origins.

The other classic version people swore by back then was Erich Kleiber conducting, with Reining, Jurinac, and Gueden. That was definitely mono only. Mine was a London Richmond LP.

BK, I haven't mentioned Tosca! For me, there's only one: Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi, conducted by de Sabata.  It's truly a case of singer and character integrating completely.

Have you ever seen the footage of them performing Act Two from Covent Garden? I wish they had recorded the entire opera.

I believe that Kleiber recording was the first complete recording.  I love Gueden, who sang Anne Truelove in the Met premiere of The Rake's Progress (available on Naxos). I rank her and Lisa della Casa right up there with Schwarzkopf on my ideal soprano list.  And Mirella Freni!

The Dream-O-Matic 6000 reminds us that a consuming fire can mean that a debt will be wiped away and that finances will soon be in a much better place......the fact that the kitties were involved says that you sometimes want to spend MORE money on them or that you think they NEED something else.....  Their survival tells us that you are doing fine by them and they recognize your efforts.

Petty, the man in the petition, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon in commission of a felony, two counts of felony animal cruelty, child abuse and two counts of unlawful disposal of a domestic animal.
Volusia County Jail records show Petty is being held without bail.

Child abuse is because he tried to force his 16 year old son to shoot one of the dogs.  It was his scared & distraught son who told on him.

Not yet.

Had to do Costco, Big Lots and Home Depot runs.

I just ordered 4 pounds of dried cherries from Michigan.  Shipping is 1 cent more than the cost of the cherries.  Still the outrageous cost is less than buying small bags of dried cherries locally, plus they don't taste as good.

Maybe next time I will try the Costco brand before ordering from Michigan.  These will last a very long time.  Now that I don't bake with them, or make fudge anymore, I only use them in my oatmeal.

I think you'll really enjoy it. The great Polka and Fugue are wonderful concert pieces but I was surprised to see they do not occur together in the opera.  The overture is truly gorgeous as well.  I have always wanted to see a production.  The Met performed it in English in the 1930s and I always wished Levine would bring it back to the repertoire.

Oh, my!  Good for the son!

More tales from my own personal Mercury retrograde:
Yesterday the kitchen faucet, which is only a couple months ago, became much looser than it should be. It still worked, but I was worried it wouldn't much longer. I called the manager, who told me to talk to my neighbor David. David is very good at fix-it stuff, but I don't feel they should use him as a super without paying him. Anyway, I told David what the problem was and he was able to fix it, fortunately. One of the things that gripes me is that the management here is too cheap to hire a real plumber, who can often come out the same day. They will only use the el cheapo plumber, who usually can't get here for 3 or 4 days. i understand wanting to save money, but we are often without the use of basic plumbing for several days. I'm really glad when David -- or me or one of my friends -- can fix it.

I was a homeowner for thirty years, twenty of that in a house built in 1820. I had the plumber out maybe four times in twenty years. I've lived here about ten years and have had to have a plumber out several times each year. I suspect he buys the cheapest faucets available. I used to buy mid-range faucets and they'd last easily fifteen years. To me, this is false economy. But you can't tell the management here anything. "You don't know anything" isn't stated, but it comes across loud and clear.

Sausage pizza was really good, and I am the beneficiary of some really decadent cookies - the fellow in the back house has been gone for over four weeks now and will be gone until the beginning of the year.  I've been holding his mail for him.  He got a box with perishables that said "refrigerate immediately" so I let him know - he said since whatever was in it won't be good by then, to just have at it.  I've had once cookie so far, called a corn cookie - really good, kind of like a cookie cornbread flavor.  Milk is the name of the company.

Right now, I'm watching American Masters - Keith Haring: Street Art Boy on PBS.

At the Louisville Costco, I saw dried blueberries, which are no longer at my Costcos. So I bought two bags. They'll never go bad.

Hell, I found a bowl of dried-out blueberries in the back of my frig.  I could have sent it to you free at cost.

I don’t know what I was dreaming but I woke Up this morning because someone was shouting about the advantages of the health care system in Canada vs the US system.

LOL.  When are you moving to Canada?

I still have one packed bag under my bed, just in case.  But it isn’t Canada’s medical that might cause me to go running for the border.

Happy Birthday, Ginny!

Hope you've had a great day, with or without the cake!

Thanks, DR Jeanne.  I was pretty bummed until our video chat with Charlotte holding a sign that said “Happy Birthday, Gram.”  Then I watched “The Prom” and now I feel much better.

Did you enjoy THE PROM?  I was going to watch it tonight, but I got sidetracked by WHITE CHRISTMAS.  Tomorrow is another day.

Do they still have drive-in movie theaters in California?

Sadly, there is that...but since not all of them wear masks to protect even themselves, they just might all be self-nominated Darwin Award Winners. ;)

I really only go through the notifications from Facebook anymore.  I haven't just read through my pages in quite a while, so I haven't really seen much of that.

I only went back on this week, because of Buz’s death.  But what I found, from people who were my FB friends, I was terrified.

Do not let the wingnuts terrify you.  They are all talk and bluster and they WANT you to be frightened - classic bully techniques.  Once Mr. Trump is gone, and he will be gone on January 20th, then they can shout to the wind all they like and hopefully people on Facebook will finally wise up and ignore them, which is what really needs to happen - with the media, too.  When bullies are ignored, they simply slink back into their nasty little holes.  When people give them airtime, even though they're berating them, it empowers them, like throwing gas on fire.
