Well, you've read the notes, the notes were operatic, and now it is time for you to post until the operatic cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ELEEMOSYNARY!
-
Welcome fifty-two GUESTS!
-
Who ARE you people?
-
'night
-
Topic of the Day: I'm still watching The Prom right now, and still enjoying it.
-
Have a good day, all!
-
T.O.D.

Various Christmas CDs, including A CAROL CHRISTMAS
-
Well, good night.
-
That is a really cool book, DR George.
~~~PROMPT DELIVERY VIBES~~~ for you and it!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I didn't sleep badly, but the time between 4:30 and 5:45 was a complete waste, thanks to Stella's pestering. Thatch was with me until sometime before that, and Annabelle was in her bookcase aerie most of the night.
-
I am ready to launder the bedding this morning. I think, after several months of trial and error with laundry carts, walkers, canes, dirty and clean laundry that I have found the solution. Except for Stella's short-term escape tsuris, the whole thing went smoothly. The problem is, after several trip[s to and from the basement, my legs want to give up.
-
DR TCB, I am so sorry about your second stepson's death. When you posted, I was confused, thinking, didn't he already die? Thank you for clarifying. I send my condolences to your family.
-
In case you were wondering, as I was:
Hugo's papa pasta consists of:
Fresh pasta scrambled with eggs, garlic, parsley, parmesan cheese, Hugo’s special seasoning plus bacon, turkey sausage & scallions.
And I want some. Right now.
:)
-
DR JohnG, I am curious about that book list, but the Washington Post, like the NY Times, will only let me read these articles if I subscribe. I have no idea what the books were.
DR George, I believe that edition of The Beggar's Opera may be the first to include the music for the songs.
My last show in May, 1979, I directed for the company I started in Middletown, Ohio was Benjamin Britten's version of The Beggar's Opera. DR Ginny was my assistant.
Gratuitous post #20
-
I love that, DR elmore3003!
-
BK, Lucia di Lammermoor? That's an early romantic opera with a fantastic mad scene and a great sextet, but it's rather a nonsensical plot. The opera really centers on the soprano. Who's yours? You might enjoy the comedy of The Barber of Seville from around the same time. I recommend the Glyndebourne production:
-
I saw Elina Garanca as the lead in Rossini's La Cenerentola, a non-magical version of Cinderella. She was wonderful, but it's not an opera I want to sit through again. Give me Massenet's Cendrillon any day.
-
I am not happy with The Group Rep.
I sent my money so that I could view bk's playlet. Within a few minutes, I got an email receipt. A second email was supposed to be forthcoming with the instructions for viewing. That never arrived (and yes, I checked my spam folder). So I sent a follow-up inquiry to The Group Rep, but have received no reply.
-
BK, I see Garanca has a DVD of Carmen, and that might be interesting. My favorite DVD of Carmen remains Sir Peter Hall's Glyndebourne production of the original opera-comique version with spoken dialogue, with Maria Ewing, at the time Mrs Peter Hall. It begins light, like a musical comedy, and gets darker and darker.
I also like the wonderful film version with Placido Domingo, Julia Migenes, and my friend Faith Esham. although I wish Domingo were 10-15 years younger to play a young man caught in a fatal attraction.
Well, that's crap. I have to see the Irish Rep's Meet Me In St Louis, because I want to hear Joshie's orchestration. I'm waiting to get through Christmas week and the Time-Warner service man.
-
In the past month or so, my internet has been dropping out for 5-15 minutes before coming back on. Yesterday, I finally contacted time Warner, who tells me they're getting lousy signals from my modem. I have a service man coming on monday around 1:00.
I saw Cecilia Bartoli in it and quite agree. It’s not effervescent, and it should be
Sheets and pillowcases are in the washers. This will be a long day.
DR George - saw this and thought of you.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Please pass the Pasta Papa.
-
I saw Ewing do Carmen at the Met around 1986. I don’t remember if that was a Sir Peter Hall production, but as soon as I get up off my lazy ass I’ll have a look. I do know the telecast and video of that production starred someone else.
-
No, not Peter Hall, and Agnes Baltsa is the Carmen. The video is 1988 but I’m nearly positive it’s the production I saw Ewing in two years prior.
-
All this opry talk is making me nervous.
-
I knew Ewing as a student in school and might have accompanied a few of her voice lessons with Steber. I need to dig through some programs to see what she sang with us. I know I have her singing Geschwitz on a private recording of the Lulu Suite in which I’m playing piano in the orchestra.
-
All this opry talk is making me nervous.
Ain’t it grand?
-
DR TCB my current machine has a 40" diagonal screen.....I am going to a 50" diagonal screen or MAYBE 55" - we shall see what's on sale.
Eventually I'm going to be able to watch ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN and she will be life size!
-
Speaking of Opry, I saw a few minutes of Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors last night. That was all I could stomach.
-
DR Jrand70, you need to transition to having a projector and a 50-foot-high screen in your back yard. Actually, make it your front yard. Yes, I believe that could increase your popularity in the neighborhood.
Good Morning. 2 1/2 days of school today. Both ending with a 15 minute sing-a-long in the parking lot of Christmas Carols requested by the pastor - that I have to lead. I tried to get out of it. So, I have the accordion here, I hope I remember how to play it - or at least fake my way through.
-
DR MATTHEW is having long days for sure.....
-
My brother, whose son just had a son on December 6, is having a birthday today.
I put a message on his Facebook page.....Happy Birthday, Grandpa!
-
I just received a nice gift, a year’s subscription to an online documentary service.
-
That's great, DR John G.!
-
Just a little something I whipped up in my spare time...
-
Very nice DR singdaw. BIG!
-
Well......the 55" TCL was $20 less than the Vizio 50"......so I bought the TCL.....looks nice so far.
Took about 30 minutes to set it all up, but it is going along like gangbusters.
I also bought the 3-year plan and just spent the additional $20.....
-
DR CHAS SMITH, I have a projector but I haven't tried it out.....perhaps this summer.....
I am sure my neighbors would be impressed and pleased to have Allison roaming around hollering for Harry.....
-
Just a little something I whipped up in my spare time...
Nice detail on the worker. He looks particularly real.
That is a cool train DR Singdaw.
-
DR Jrand enjoy your new tv.
-
I finished making the bed around 12:30, and I had a nice phone conversation with Joshie. While I was putting the comforter on the bed and trying to smooth it out, there was a huge lump. It was Thatch exploring a cave. He's now buried under the kitty quilt. Seems quite content.
-
That is a really cool book, DR George.
~~~PROMPT DELIVERY VIBES~~~ for you and it!
Thanks, Singdaw!

And it arrived!! :D

Here's a picture of the title page to The Beggar's Opera that I actually took!

Evidently, it's three scripts bound in one book. Here's the title page of the next book:

And here's the third:

Very nice, DR George.

That's a nice book.
Sometimes putting an old book in a box with a lot of crinkled up newspapers for awhile gets rid of any "old" odor........or so said Dear Heloise many years ago.
-
Thanks DR JANE so far so good.

I can certainly try that, Jrand, but first I would have to find some newspaper. ::)

That's really cool, ChasSmith! The closest I got to professional opera talent was when I was going to Western Washington University, and I had a couple of classes with Heidi Lynn Grant, who went on to win the Met auditions, eventually married her accompanist and became Heidi Grant Murphy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SXeTr5SQKI). And then got to sing with Renée Fleming and Anne Sofie von Otter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKvNJbgSCGQ). :)

Since I had some spare time left over after making the train out of snow, I made this 25-foot tree out of pink flamingo lawn ornaments.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep.
-
I'll forward Singdaw's post to the Group Rep - I couldn't get in either - wrong password sent, but they fixed it right away - but apparently you never even got that far.

-
Picked up some packages, including elmore's suggestion of Scwanda.
-
Went to Gelson's and got a chicken Caesar for food, which I'm eating whilst finishing up Lucia di Lammermoor. I didn't realize how old it was, so not quite my cuppa tea, music-wise, but I have recognized several tunes and it's not unpleasant.

My boss called me into his office today and handed me an envelope for going to work yesterday, I protested saying I was already paid for coming to work and he replied 5bat he thought it was unfair that I was the only one who showed up and he just wanted to show his appreciation for my dedication.

I love my job

JRand enjoy your personal theatre.

Friday evening greetings! Our mission for today was to consolidate the 3 boxes of gifts for Rob’s family that were sent here because ours was the default address attached to Mary Linda’s Amazon wish list. We were able to get everything into the biggest box, which we sealed up and addressed to them in Illinois. Took it to the Monroe post office because the one here in Middletown is a total zoo and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. They might have presents from her brother by Christmas - or not.

We also have all but one box of ornaments on our tree. Richard unpacks them and I hang them. We’ll finish tomorrow while watching Ohio State v. Northwestern - Go, Wildcats!

The state's Open Enrollment for 2021 health insurance ends Tuesday at midnight.
I will be working all day tomorrow.

Zoom session was great - project one is going to work splendidly, I think. I will only say, at this point, it involves three people - two adults, one kid. We'll have one more session on Tuesday, then right after the holidays we'll begin the real work. Yes, it's something that involves filming.

Now listening to elmore's Schwanda. Will go to Gelson's and get some popcorn for a snack.

Need to sleep.

Very nice, DR George.
And how does it smell? :)
Fortunately, it just has an old book smell, not really musty at all, and certainly not a moldy smell!
When I had my old newspaper collection, my mom’s cousin sent me the ones she had saved for my collection. She lived in Hawaii and the newspapers got stored with moth balls. The newspapers never lost the moth ball smell, but I found if I sprinkled Hai Karate on them it helped.
-
Actually the Hai Karate smell was so strong, that it made you appreciate the moth ball smell.
