Topic of the Day:  I'm going to pick up my mom and take her to my sister's house where we'll partake of the feasting.  It's supposed to rain today and my mom can't see very well in the dark when it's raining.  Seeing in the dark when everything is dry is okay, and driving in the day when it's raining is fine, too.  It's just the combo of darkness and rain that's not good. :-\ So, I'll get her so that when we leave in the dark and raining night, she can get home fairly safely. :)

I also want to record both the NBC and CBS broadcasts of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (when I was much younger, I thought it was called the Macy's Day Parade ;D ), but my DVR cable guide only goes out a couple of hours.  When I got home last night, I saw that my power went out for a very short time.  I had to reset a few clocks, and I think that that screwed up my DVRs.

:P is what I say to that!

TOD: This morning I will pick up Wae-Ling so she can fix the turkey. It's her favorite holiday, and the best part (according to her) is sticking your hands inside the turkey to get the giblets.

We'll see who shows up for dinner.

Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING

When in doubt, there's always Tater Tot Hotdish:

1 to 1.5 pounds ground beef
1 can cream of mushroom
1 can cream of chicken
A couple cloves of garlic
8-12oz. of shredded pepper jack cheese
1 package of tater tots (most important ingredient)
Salt
Pepper
1 small onion

Brown your ground beef on the stove, then drain off the fat. Saute the onions and garlic together. In a large bowl, mix together beef, onions, garlic, both cans of soup, salt, and pepper.

Spread it evenly into the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Cover with about half the shredded cheese, then place tater tots in one layer over the entire pan.

Bake at 450 for 30 minutes, or until the tater tots are crisp. Cover with remaining cheese and put it back in the oven until the cheese melts.

Enjoy!

I washed, peeled, cut, and soaked the potatoes overnight in the fridge. Whether or not that has any effect on the final product remains to be judged, but getting it all done the night before is the best thing ever.

BK mentioned Hawaiian dinner rolls. I don't know from Hawaiian dinner rolls, but we do have the King's Hawaiian package brand here if that counts. We also have a package of Kerrygold butter I splurged on. That's pricey compared to the everyday stuff. But SO good. Someone told me there are even better ones in that category, but they aren't readily available here in our stores.

BK, thank you for this site. I am very thankful HHW exists. I was never good at love, but I was blessed with the best of friends, many of whom I met here between 2004 and now. Some have since 2004 died, some left because of personal clashes with a few of the more unpleasant DRs, and some drifted away in search of a better party or new priorities. I do keep in touch with many of them and I occasionally ask them to think about coming back.

Thank you, BK.

And now I shall tell you the story of Uncle Wayne's Funeral.

You shoulda been there.  Chris, the funeral director we always use, said to me afterwards:  "Well - that was something!"

Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:21:37 AM
My sister Paula and I were the first to arrive.  We gave Kay our framed photographs to put in the room.

My brother Mike arrived and my cousins Carol & Marcie came.  It was before 10 a.m.  We had decided to let our Aunt Martha go in first and alone for a bit....and we left the first line in the Guest Book for her to sign.

She arrived.....she and her daughter The TroublesomeTina spent about ten minutes in the room....and then Chris opened the door and asked us all to come in.

Uncle Wayne looked good, he was dressed in his favorite golf sweater and trousers.....he had his golf hat under his arm and a rose in his hand.

We had a chair up front for Aunt Martha.  The flower arrangements were all nice.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:24:59 AM
I gave Chris the FIVE cds of music and the time and order each should be played - yes it was a PRODUCTION - and a bit of this and that to be done.

Family continued to arrive.....and Ron - the speaker- and his wife Judy arrived.  I expected to see Ron with notes, but instead all he had were the scraps of paper and envelopes with notes scribbled on them that he had at my house on Sunday.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:25:38 AM
When we met on Sunday, he would begin a story and veer off into his own life and carry on and on.  Then he would say, but of course I won't be saying that then.....
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:28:17 AM
So then my cousin Sue and her 4th husband Lee arrived.  Aunt Martha said "Keep THEM away from me..."  It's a long story, but she is certainly justified in her feelings.

But of course Sue marched right up to her and engaged her in conversation - for several minutes as Aunt Martha seethed.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:30:21 AM
Then Ron marched up to the podium and said.....there's not enough light.....I've lost some of my vision. I need a lot of light to see my notes.

The podium light seemed insufficient.  So I went to find Nick, the owner's son, to see if there was another light.

He took the podium light to put in some new batteries.  In the meantime Ron had MOVED the podium so that now he was blocking the view of the casket to a lot of the folks on the family side.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:32:17 AM
The new batteries gave more light, but Ron didn't want to move the podium back...I guess adamant is the word.  So Nick gave up.

I had a script that I had given Nick & Chris about what time to play which CD....

At 12:45 - Uncle Wayne's four chosen songs (the first cd was about an hour of his favorites played on a loop starting at 10 a.m.)
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:34:29 AM
My cousin Rusty had written a song titled "Open Windows" that Uncle Wayne wanted played - and Rusty decided he would do that live....which was fine.

He and Ron and I were waiting out by the guestbook.  Chris started the 4-songs CD on time.

And Ron said...."When do I go on? Right after the guitar guy, right?"

And I said: "No.....Rusty plays, then I do 'The Rose' in sign language....then you come on."

"Oh yea that's right....."
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:37:24 AM
1 p.m.

I had set up a nice chair for Rusty.  He went out and sang his song - really nice.

Then I walked out and signed the Conway Twitty version of The Rose.....whew!

As I walked to sit down beside my cousins Carol & Daryl on the front row....my brother Kent heard Sue say:  "He didn't even know the words to that song....."

Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:38:19 AM
Then Ron started to talk - and thirty minutes later we had all heard his life story with a guest appearance by Uncle Wayne.

As he got to end - finally - there was a ruckus a few rows behind us.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:40:31 AM
Sue's husband Lee had collapsed in his chair......

Chris called 911 and the paramedics arrived as we were all making one last trip around the casket.
Title: Re: A THANKFULLY THANKFUL THANKSGIVING
Post by: Jrand74 on November 25, 2021, 07:41:31 AM
Then a short ride to the cemetery - with five scheduled pall bearers and a sixth fill in since Sue's son Aron had gone to hospital with her...

Judy - Ron's wife read a short poem....and THE END.

And now you can feel as if you were there.

A side note.  My Uncle's insurance from his work at the Allison Division of GM still had my grandmother as the beneficiary....so my Aunt Martha needed to sign a release so that the proceeds could be applied to the $17,000 cost of the service.   :P

I said Aunt Martha would have no problem with it, but Troublesome Tina I am sure would be a road block.  Early in the day, as Chris approached Aunt Martha to explain why he needed her signature - we don't know the amount of the benefit - but that Uncle Wayne intended that as burial insurance.....  I grabbed Tina and took her aside to talk about something important.

Chris explained things to Aunt Martha and she was happy to sign....if the benefit is greater, of course she receives the difference.

From DR TCB:
Quote
I didn’t mean you should drive over to Portland just for donuts.  However, if you were going over for a meal, to catch up with friends, or perhaps shopping (tax free) you could swing by Voodoo, and see if there is a crowd.

True, but we don't as we don't walk around unless we stay the night, and we haven't done that since before we moved into our condo.  Sometimes we stop at a bakery I like because it is conveniently located near our good friend's home.

DR JANE you are correct I will be submitting my billable hours to the estate to be compensated for my time.

I am not sure what the rate is - but it's something.

Good.  My brother, at my insistence, did that after my father passed away.  I believe it was a percentage, but then I expect states may vary.  My brother then kindly gave me half of what he took.

I'm up, I'm up - I think eight hours of sleep - hard to tell anymore. I managed four hours, got up to use the loo and noticed the clocks were flashing - apparently, just after I got in bed at three, the power went out - great. It was VERY windy - not so much here but near here. In the City of Studio power lines snapped, although that didn't affect us. Seems to be calmer now. Interestingly, the computer restarted itself, but after I put in my password it had to reload and that took five or six minutes. So, then I reset the clocks and I got back into bed around nine-fifteen and fell asleep a bit after that and woke up at one.

While up earlier, I did order a turkey dinner from a nearby Denny's - just to have the turkey, stuffing, and gravy, maybe a few mashed potatoes. That should be here between two and two-thirty. Paty's wasn't going to work this year - you had to go pick it up and they told me they expected to be out of them by one and I didn't care to chance that or eat that early.

TOD: This morning I will pick up Wae-Ling so she can fix the turkey. It's her favorite holiday, and the best part (according to her) is sticking your hands inside the turkey to get the giblets.

Finishing up Michael Connelly's latest, The Dark Hours. The crux of the mystery is interesting, but it doesn't really get going until about 70% into it. And there is one compelling scene involving an emergency tracheotomy. Plus, I enjoyed something set in December 2020 and January 2021, with full pandemic and storming of the Capitol. But sadly, 70% of the book is too perfunctory, too half-hearted, too lazy.

Kings is what I think of as Hawaiian bread.
