Topic of the Day: I think I discovered Donna Summer On the Radio (https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=KzqSH1mr1jt-qB4i&v=LIazjenRvB0). :)
-
She was very popular in the 1970s, and I had several of her records. She was probably my most favorite performer until I discovered The Manhattan Transfer (and then musicals).
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Once again, DR vixmom, your "To do" list leaves me feeling exhausted.
-
Honestly, I don't know how you do it.
-
But more power to ya!
-
I'm getting my hairs cut this morning.
-
That is the extent of my "to do" list for today.

And that may be pushing it.

Good morning, all!
-
Around 5:00 yesterday afternoon, my toilet overflowed. I have a mess to deal with today.
-
Around 4:30 I woke and could not get back to sleep. I kept running through a plan of attack for the bathroom. The temperatures really dropped in the apartment last night, and I was suddenly besieged by three cats wanting under the blankets to get warm. I finally fell asleep and woke around 7:10.

Good morning

TOD: A strange memory came today after I read BK's question about what music I might have heard on the radio.
I was in Navy Boot Camp in Orlando FL in the summer of 1970. I had been appointed as a squad leader and one of our "extra" leadership experiences was standing a two-hour watch, overnight, in the main entry to our barracks.
There wasn't a chance in Hades anyone would be coming in from midnight to two, or two to four, etc., but it was the experience of "standing watch" that they were instilling.
I had only one such watch, and I remember it well because a radio was playing to help keep us alert.
And what did I hear? The very first time I ever heard The Carpenters and "Close to You" was during that watch.
I thought I had died and gone to heaven hearing Karen Carpenter's lovely voice and that wonderful Bacharach tune.

~~~MOPPING VIBES~~~ for DR elmore3003
And MOPING VIBES for the rest of us!!!
-
Yes, today is Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and it is a national holiday, although many businesses will remain open and having sales as is true of other "birthday" holidays on our calendars.
No mail, though, as it is a "federal" holiday.
-
Heaven knows what today may bring.
-
I, for one, shall remain indoors. If anything gets brought, it will have to ring my doorbell.
-
And, of course, tonight is a continuation of our study of angels as Johnston First Baptist Church. I trust the preacher will not breach the subject of Satan or demons tonight.
The very thought of that gives me William Peter Blatty shivers.
So guess what!
There was a squall line that crossed the northeast yesterday, and as per usual, there are trees down all over the place. Unfortunately, an old rotted one that was just close enough to hit the house... hit the house. Nothing catastrophic like in 2018, but certainly some damage that needs to be attended to (along with that tale).
I've submitted an insurance claim and ... thank GAWD for knowing this guy ... our contractor friend who's worked on the house before has already been out to start assessing the damage. The insurance wants him to make sure that any place that needs a tarp to keep snow and rain from entering will go up, and he'll be doing that today.
Fun, fun, fun.
-
...now a 58% chance of snow.
So I will not be doing anything today.....outdoors....still single digits tomorrow but temps in the 20's starting Wednesday.
-
Once again, DR vixmom, your "To do" list leaves me feeling exhausted.
Super ditto!!
-
Oh no DR CHAS SMITH!
Tarp vibes to keep you warm and dry.
-
Wow, dental vibes all around!
My next appointment is on the 31st, just a cleaning and checkup, but there's one molar that eventually needs a new crown so she'll be checking on that, too.
Following Friday's TOD repor, I binge-watched the rest of the PAN AM series, and damn, that was a fine show. The 1963/64 vibe is of course always great to see portrayed, but they really tackled some serious issues, and I think it was extremely well written and cast.
DR CharlesSmith, I'm sorry your home has been damaged again. I hope the repair is swift and secure.
-
I dreamt I was a doctor aboard a cruise ship. Thankfully I had no patients. Or patience.
You weren't assisting that rascal Dr. Buñuel again, were you?
-
DR CharlesSmith, I'm sorry your home has been damaged again. I hope the repair is swift and secure.
Knock wood, I have a great contractor friend, and great contractors who are responsive and actually take care of things in a timely manner can be very hard to come by...just about anywhere. I am very fortunate.
-
OMG, I have news -- news that must be told especially to DR Elmore!
You're simply not going to believe it.
This all happened rather suddenly right at the end of December... I never planned for it myself, it was presented to me at the last minute when the local groups were about to announce their 2024 seasons...
Don't laugh. You might cry, but try not to laugh. In November/December 2024, at one of our local 100+ seat theeders, I will be music-directing
(wait for it)
Once Upon a Mattress.
-
I really hardly know it -- I mean, well enough to actually consider doing it myself. So I have much to learn in the coming months. And much planning to do, for a venue in which I can - at best - fit 6 or 7 musicians, me being one of them.
-
Sorry about your house, DR ChasSmith.
Sounds like you have things well in hand, but still...
-
How does one kumquat greet another?
''Lo, quat."
-
My director and I will be making every effort to get to Encores! - which for me, has to be during the second week.
Hey, I should have two eyes to see out of by then! :)
-
Can there be such a thing as loquat jam?
-
I am sorry there won't be any.
-
You may be sure
That deep down,
I'm demure.
I really hardly know it -- I mean, well enough to actually consider doing it myself. So I have much to learn in the coming months. And much planning to do, for a venue in which I can - at best - fit 6 or 7 musicians, me being one of them.
The original off-Broadway orchestration was (we think) 4 violas, 2 celli, bass, piano-celesta, guitar, harp, 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, 4 reeds, and percussion (1 player).
-
My director and I will be making every effort to get to Encores! - which for me, has to be during the second week.
Hey, I should have two eyes to see out of by then! :)
Well, God knows what the revised book will be like. They've cut one song because of the book revisions. This PC approach to comedy drives me mad.
Oy! Sorry to hear.
Not to mention, I have a great director, but he's all too often dazzled by revised orchestrations, and he's already asked me to consider tweaking "Normandy" à la the Sarah Jessica Parker-cast arrangement.
Good morning.
I finally made the gingerbread house, DR Jane!
I don't think it will win any awards.
-
Also, there's a big crack in the roof. Almost as if a tree had hit it.
-
The jigger seen in the background had to be used immediately upon completion.
-
Holy f'n......
I just got an automated call from my pharmacy saying my prescription (Prolensa, an eye drop) is ready for pickup. The price will be $137.00. Say wha'? The other eye drop I use for this (the antibiotic) was only $12.00! I think this one's an anti-inflammatory. How could it be so much?
I called and got a person, who confirmed that and added that it originally came in at $128 - and the INSURANCE raised it to $137. How do you like them apples? With friends like that...
Anyway, I was first given sample packs for it at the doctor's, and I just talked to them and they are more than willing to give me another batch when I'm ready to do the second eye. Isn't that nice? They really are a great office in all respects.
-
I sure am entertaining the board today with all of these adventures. Never a dull moment.
-
Hoo boy, DR ChasSmith.
-
$$$$
-
Canadian car wash.
-
Here's another one for DR Elmore:
I think this is fairly new and not all patients get it, but I did, and it alleviates having to use even more eye drops after the surgery. I believe it's a steroid in addition to the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. So, my eye drops routine doesn't change, from the three days prior to surgery to many days after. I just have this little yellow-tipped thingy just inside my eyelid that releases the medication.
The miracles of modern science!
Sorry about the tree-fall, Chas. But it’s great to have a contractor you can trust. This is the first house I’ve had that has no trees within striking distance.
Loquats ain’t kumquats.
-
I have made loquat jam, loquat cobbler, pickled loquats and loquat wine.
-
How ‘bout them loquats?
-
Memorial service was nice. Jim and Shirley had been married for 70 years. She died last September. He died in December.
-
Our guy just came back, went up and singlehandedly threw the debris off the roof, and sealed up two (maybe three) places where the snow could get through. So we're good for this coming storm. Which is exactly what the insurance company wanted to hear as well.
'Quat you say?
DR Vixmom I will never ask you to make me a PBJ sandwich. I do agree about weird nut butters. I could live with plain white bread though I prefer a tastier bread. I could live with creamy peanut butter while I prefer chunky. I cannot live with grape jelly ;D
-
DR Rodzinski I do not remember the comic strip, “Apartment 3-G.
-
I remember “Mary Worth” as ok.
-
"Dondi" was my favorite comic strip. When I went away to camp my parents mailed the strips to me.
-
Saturday nights my parents usually went out with friends. On the way home they would stop to pick up the Sunday LA Times. We had a nice laundry container with a lid that was kept in the hallway outside of my bedroom. My father would leave the comic section on top of the lid. In the morning I would get the comics and return to bed to read them.
I discovered The Beatles on the radio. And one day in 1969, I was driving home and a song came on that was so good......I stayed in the car until it was over so I could find out what it was.
It was: I Think I Love You by David & Shirley Cassidy & The Partridge Family.
After that, I started watching the show and buying the records.
-
Also, there's a big crack in the roof. Almost as if a tree had hit it.
Well, it is that time of year ;)
DR CHAS SMITH did you try that phone thing that's supposed to save you lots on prescriptions?
-
I shoveled my drive way.....not too much sn*w.
I put the trash bin down by the street.
Here it is, Singdaw:
https://bestrecipebox.com/no-bake-cranberry-pie/
Very easy.
-
I discovered plenty of people on the radio: The Carpenters, The Manhattan Transfer, Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand, to name a few.
Then, when I got into 40s music, there was an oldies station (remember when oldies meant something other than 90s music?) that taught me some great stuff. Elmer’s Tune was a particular favorite.
-
Day of the Loquat
My family had a tradition that one Christmas present every year would be wrapped in the funny pages. I haven’t been able to continue that tradition because I haven’t gotten a newspaper in ages.
It was. I also remember we occassionally went out on a Saturday night with our parents, and then stopping at the big newstand in Beverly Hills for the paper on the way home.
-
On the way home from the gym today we stopped at the market. We don't expect to go anywhere tomorrow as another storm is heading our way.
-
Fortunately it won't be as cold. I just hope it is warm enough not to burst another pipe in the building. We, thank goodness, do not have any water damage.
-
Currently there are three trucks from one contractor company in our parking lot. I don't know which unit they are working on.
-
Two units had a good amount of damage, one more than the other. We helped another neighbor clean up water. I don't know who else had damage but have been told there were five units damaged.
-
That's too bad, DR Jane. I hope there isn't any further damage.
-
Thank you for the recipe, DR John G.
TOD: I think when I was very young, I heard most top 40 radio songs when they'd pop up on TV first.
Pop songs would be on the variety shows. I'm pretty sure I heard Marie Osmond sing "Last Dance" on TV before I heard Donna Summer sing it.
I listened to pop radio incessantly in the early 70s. Of course, pop music of then was very different from what it is today, if it even still exists. The market is so segmented now.
Seven!
I’m not finding much amusement in Great Train Robbery.
Does anyone know if the OKLAHOMA! materials being sent out now are the usual suspects or have they been changed......
The materials were cleaned up in the 1990s, but I doubt there are any main changes.
That's too bad, DR Jane. I hope there isn't any further damage.
Thanks. I just found out about another unit that has some major damage.
I also talked to the contractors and thanked them for coming out quickly to help everyone.
They have fans blowing where needed and tape marks on the ceilings where there is water.
Watching an old favorite tonight: Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast. I think this was the first subtitled movie I ever saw.
There was just a "Cheers" reunion on the Emmys - to present the comedy writing and directing Emmys.
Nice to see Rhea Perlman, who is such an integral part in "Barbie."
And just now, Danny De Vito was there with the cast of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia."
Scammers sent out a legitimate looking text to people in Portland yesterday saying PGE would not be fixing the power outages for 10 days as they needed to get transformers from Texas.
I don't understand why people do this. Of course PGE and to take the time, in the middle of trying to fix the power outages, to let people know it wasn't true.
Most of all I feel bad for people who believed it.
PAGE EIGHT!
-
Good night, friends.
-
Sorry about the tree-fall, Chas. But it’s great to have a contractor you can trust. This is the first house I’ve had that has no trees within striking distance.
That's one convenient thing about my condo, too...no close trees.
-
Memorial service was nice. Jim and Shirley had been married for 70 years. She died last September. He died in December.
Wow...married for 70 years. That's amazing!
-
I'm thinking it really is high time for darling George to write his Kritzer World review.
I'm working on it...slowly.
-
Santa came late.
Disco fever!! :D
-
Here’s the cranberry sauce pie. It was a hit. Every person who took a small slice returned for seconds.
(http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7477.0;attach=20514)
That looks good, John. Congrats on the successful pie!
Watching another movie from my childhood: Walkabout. It’s as great as ever. Seems t have had an influence on Terence Malick.
-
The issue from the Critics Choice awards of the Best Song presenters naming Jack Black, Ariana DeBose and Ryan Gosling as "actors who think they can sing" seems to have gone mega-viral.
Here's the New York Post story on this.
https://pagesix.com/2024/01/15/entertainment/ariana-debose-fumes-over-joke-at-her-expense-at-critics-choice-awards/
Oh, my. :o You'd think the writers would know who they're joking about before making those kinds of jokes!
-
"Dondi" was my favorite comic strip. When I went away to camp my parents mailed the strips to me.
I remember for a short while while I was in high school, there was a daily Star Wars comic. I read it and then it just disappeared. :-\ I don't remember if it was cancelled or if it actually ended.
-
Remember the other day when I said it was in the 50’s?
It’s snowing.
:o
It was a crazy morning and I never had time to do my weather check in Maryland.
When I left my house about a half hour ago to go to Subway, it was 37°F. When I got to Subway (it only took about three minutes to get there), it was down to 28°F!
-
It’s 25 here. And dropping.
-
Thanks DR LAURA.....I deleted the message and changed my password.
-
Thanks for that recipe DR JOHN G - I hope someone at my local WalMart sees it.
-
MR BK must be writing.
-
It is a balmy 5 degrees right now.
-
I think I picked these two movies out tonight because they are like warming comfort food on a cold, cold night.
-
Watching another movie from my childhood: Walkabout. It’s as great as ever. Seems t have had an influence on Terence Malick.
Great film. Was lucky to see it at Film Forum once.
There was a Spider-Man too. Supposedly Stan Lee wrote that one himself.
All dentist news good. My teeth live to bite another day!
-
The Emmys were tonight. Yawn.
-
Been zoning out on the couch and will now write five more pages (have done five so far) and then maybe a few more after the notes are posted.
-
Here it is, Singdaw:
Very easy.
Thanks for the link. I don't know when (or if) I'll make it, but at least I'll have the recipe bookmarked. :)
I also saw on a huge screen when I was growing up.
Walkabout could never be made today. Jennie Agutter was only 16 when the movie was made. Though her nude scenes are innocent, they just wouldn’t be happening now.
-
Two units had a good amount of damage, one more than the other. We helped another neighbor clean up water. I don't know who else had damage but have been told there were five units damaged.
Oh, no! 😱
-
That's too bad, DR Jane. I hope there isn't any further damage.
Ditto!!
-
Scammers sent out a legitimate looking text to people in Portland yesterday saying PGE would not be fixing the power outages for 10 days as they needed to get transformers from Texas.
I don't understand why people do this. Of course PGE and to take the time, in the middle of trying to fix the power outages, to let people know it wasn't true.
Most of all I feel bad for people who believed it.
Yikes! And why would they (pretend to) get them from Texas when Texas had people die from the cold because their politicians didn't want to help their constituents‽‽
-
Popcorn ceilings.
A scourge of an earlier era in decorating.
Agreed! :P
My sister's boyfriend loves that movie. Long before it was released in the US, he bought an Australian (Region 4?) DVD and I think it was why he bought a region-code-free player.
PAGE NINE DANCE!!
-
It’s 25 here. And dropping.
It's now 26°F and expected to get down to 20° by sunrise, then get up to a high of 37°.
Nice. I don't remember reading that one, though.
Great news, Rodzinski!
Blue Lagoon is another.
-
I've never actually seen it, so I don't know how innocent the nudity in that is. ::)
-
Well, here's one good thing to come out of the Emmys:
Elton John achieves elite EGOT status with Emmy win for his concert film (https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/15/entertainment/elton-john-egot-emmys/index.html)
:D
And now...
...since we're here...
I really liked that video (https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=gpD-vWAHeHiZflY3&v=ZHwVBirqD2s) back in the day...and I still do. ;)
New notes are up.
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
