-
Sending BK more of the most excellent vibes and xylophones for payment two to arrive!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept well until sometime around 2:30; the last three hours were endless, listening to the cats run around and cuddling with A & T.
-
Yesterday morning, when I checked my bank account online, I was $26.00 overdrawn. I was so rattled that I spent too much time between 2:30 and 5:30 fretting over how much worse it might be today. So, I spent some time debating my options. Since my union pension will not land until Jan. 2 and I'm not expecting any DR to win the lottery and give me a ouple of million, I decided that I cannot afford to move from the apartment until 2025.
-
So, around 3:30 this morning, I called Access-a-Ride and canceled today's trips to CVS for the vaccines. I needed all my AAR cash in the apartment - you have to pay for the rides in cash, and I've got $60 in singles here at the moment - to make a bank deposit this week to cover the overdraft.
-
At 6:00 this morning I canceled my CVS appointment. I can reschedule after Jan. 2, and then I checked my bank account online to see if the overdraft had become larger. Well, knock me over! I am no longer overdrawn, and I have a bank balance of $2.50.
-
I can transpose to any key, I supposedly have a high IQ, the number for which I have never known, I can read Latin and French, I'm a whiz at English grammar, but I have never been able to balance a checkbook or manage money. Go figure./
-
Good morning, all.
-
so if any DR wins the Big Lottery, I'd happily accept $2,000,000. That should keep me solvent through the end of my days and give me enough to record Jubilee. If you want to give me $3,000,000, I can also record Babes in Toyland. And you have a nice tax write-off.
-
I am up, just to start getting done whatever things need to get done. And there are plenty of them.
-
I've made a note of those figures, DR Elmore, and will keep an eye on my winnings.
-
I can balance a checkbook.
My only problem in doing so is that I always run out of numbers too soon!
-
I did get one bit of good news this morning: John Wilson sent me a thank you for his Christmas card. He's recording in the spring the new edition of Guys and Dolls that Jason Buell and I co-edited in 2017.
-
I've made a note of those figures, DR Elmore, and will keep an eye on my winnings.
I do so love to write all those zeros!
-
Speaking of running out of numbers, it is currently one degree outside.
One. Count it.
We have one degree.
-
Well, here's today's shocker. Yesterday morning, around 7:30, a sleeping woman was burned alive in a subway car. A Guatemalan man has been held by police.
-
Speaking of running out of numbers, it is currently one degree outside.
One. Count it.
We have one degree.
That was another reason to cancel CVS today. Who wants to be outside?
-
Good morning.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Good morning, friends.
-
And others.
-
.
-
Who decides these things?
-
Elmote, your talk of zeroes has me singing Five Zeroes from On the Twentieth Century, which I dearly love. I am hoping you get your wish.
-

Hey, they forgot Noche de los Rabanos. Happy Night of the Radishes, y'all.

May all your radish festivities be bright.

Today is the fourth anniversary of the death of my beloved friend Rebecca Luker.

TOD:
My favorite things about this past year are few, sad to say. The most memorable positives are my two cataract surgeries which have allowed me to discard wearing glasses for anything (except sun glasses, that is).
Another positive is the truly wonderful tale of Fred written by Rodzinski. I really enjoyed reading it, and it would make a wonderful feel-good movie with character studies aplenty.
I tried to listen, as well, but it did not sound like his voice to me. Wasn't that an AI-generated reading?
-
Some least favorite things of the year include Hurricane Helene which devastated much of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina...and caused damage elsewhere, as well.
It's always strange to me when I drive down a road I haven't been on since the hurricane and find so many downed or uprooted trees, often huge ones. And in areas where trees have been cleared, it's shocking to see what fallen trees did to homes they fell upon. I consider myself extremely lucky to have survived it unscathed.

Last evening, I thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of my cousin Chad and his wife Courtney. He had a Christmas "do" for local relatives including his mother, Debra, his sister Becky and her husband Evan, his uncle Butch and his fiancee Sharon, and me, his "favored" cousin. The house was warm, beautifully decorated, and there was plenty of snacking food. Dinner was rib-eye steaks Chad cooked outdoors, roasted zucchini with onions, baked potatoes and a wonderful Caesar salad (without chicken).
While we adults really enjoyed ourselves, the house belonged to the children. Chad and Courtney have two daughters, Brynlee and Allie, ages 3 and 1 1/2, respectively. Becky and Evan have Audrey, also 3, and Levi who is 8 months old. Levi was fascinated by me for some reason. He just stared at me and smiled a lot. I got a kick out of that.
The little girls were all about dressing up, playing, hurting each other's feelings, screaming at the top of their lungs and being very excited about opening presents.
I arrived at 4:45 p.m. and departed at 7:15 p.m. The meal was delicous. Chad is a whiz with the grill.

Yesterday afternoon I had my weekly Zoom chat with like-minded film-music-lovers. There were only five of us this week as others had holiday plans.
One of the guys, Marhsall Harvey (BK's editor on a few projects), regaled us with stories about working on a Tournament of Roses float. It's a huge project, and it's taking a lot of time. He suggested that since my Christmas gathering was early that I should fly out to LA and help them cover the float with flowers, etc. As interesting as that sounds, I took a pass. If I still lived in California, I'd have taken him up on it, though. It sounds interesting, and if the float turns out to look like the artistic rendering he showed us, it should take a major prize.
Another member, Henry Stanny, seconded Marshall's invite and said I would be welcome at his end-of-year party on the 29th. That sounded great, too. I would dearly love to meet these guys because they are genuinely nice people. Bruce has worked with Henry as the EMCEE on concerts Henry puts together.

I have a Friday appointment with my ENT doctor to discuss a sleep study.
I had one nearly 10 years ago which led to my getting a CPAP machine. The County of Alameda had a medical plan with Kaiser, and it was they who not only provided the CPAP but also all support for same. When I retired and relocated to SC, the VA took up my CPAP support based on copies of the sleep study I had obtained from Kaiser.
A couple of weeks ago, my CPAP started making noises. These noises were very irritating. I could fall asleep using the machine, but I would wake up at 3:30 or 4 a.m. and not be able to fall back asleep. It's difficult to describe the sound, as I first thought it might be "me" causing the noise...as if the air pressure was causing my nasal passages to whistle. I heard it loudly in my head, so it wasn't something I could pinpoint. I Googled the issue and learned that these noises indicate that the CPAP machine was possibly wearing out.
I turned to the VA to request a new machine. They said i would need a new sleep study as regulations had changed requiring sleep studies to be done every 10 years before they would replace a machine. Sigh. I was told a request for a sleep study had been entered into the VA system, but it may take a long time and I shoudl go to my ENT if I wanted faster results.
And so, Friday afternoon, I will visit the doctor who had previously helped me with my hearing loss and with my nasal polyps.
-
There is an upshot to that previous tale:
Two nights ago, I used my CPAP and it made no noise at all. I slept peacefully through the night. Same again last night.
Still, the machine is old and should be replaced, so I'm going to go through it all again.

Sounds like such a lovely celebration.

I'm up, I'm up - seven hours of sleep.

Had a message from another gal at the insurance company - had to sign one additional document, which I did online, and THAT should now trigger the payment, so hopefully today it will arrive at some point soon. Digits crossed and thanks for all the vibes and xylophones and keep 'em coming so we can have a Merry Christmas here. :)
-
Elmote. I com form thi Vixmam Schul off tyPing.
Iam so pourd
-
Not yet. Have e-mailed the gal who's supposed to release the payment - nothing. Texted the new gal who wrote and asked her to make sure the other one was working today and if not, to please have someone else release the payment. This is excruciatingly excruciating but hopefully by the time I get home from food and shopping, it will be done.
-
She's working. And apparently not in such a hurry to release the payment. She seems not to understand how stressful this has all been.
-
Now she says she's sent the payment request to a supervisor for approval and that I'll get an e-mail when I can retrieve the money and that will happen sometime today.

From DR Laura:
When we sold our old church building, they removed the time capsule that was placed under the cross. One of the items inside was a note from the pastor's teenage son. He's now one of the older guys in the congregation.
That must have been fun for him to see it opened.

Back from a very light breakfast and the last of the shopping for the Do.

Payment two has not arrived. I'm gonna give it another hour and then I'm taking the gloves off, I'm afraid.

Back, from four (4) hours of HELL, to wit:
The bank - No problem. In and out. Done.
Store #1 - HELL. They inexplicably had almost nothing I was there for, and someone I (happily) hadn't seen in years found me and put me through HELL bringing me up to date on their life and that of others. Pure torture.
Store #2 - HELL. Nothing fancy, just plain HELL. Every which way.
Store #3 - Piece o' cake, since it's right next door to Store #2 and I could walk in, buy one thing, and get my ASS out.
Store #4 - Walked in, took one look around, and walked right back out. I didn't need it THAT bad.
Gas station - Put 2 gallons of gas in the can I brought with me for the snowblower, etc. All fine, except it didn't spit out a receipt after I said "yes" to "do you want a receipt?"
The traffic: I only got about four miles from my house (as the crow flies - till somebody shoots the bastard down), and it was HELL the entire way. From what I could see in a couple of places, the opposing traffic had it even worse. Still...
-
Haven't had one in ages, but I love flourless chocolate cakes.
-
Just sent a really long text to everyone on the text thread. I think their plan is to string this out until the end of the day or even morning and I told them that it's neither fair nor right for it to take this time once I signed the additional document and the gal who sent it to me wrote, "As soon as it is completed, I will let your adjuster know they can release the final payment. If you have any questions, please let me know." Well, release the damn payment already. I don't need this damn anxiety anymore. I've had it since Friday.
-
Of course, they're probably all at lunch now.
-
Enter page four.

Monday evening greetings! I have made peace with our decision to stay home this week. We picked up a huge Kroger order and I’ve started preparing some of our favorite holiday dishes. Meanwhile, Rob and Mary Linda are kindly sending frequent photos of what we’re missing at their house.
-
TOD - I started 2024 with Covid and I’m ending it with bronchitis and threw in a little thing called cancer in between. Add to that the deaths of one beloved relative and two special librarian friends and this year has been a real dumpster fire.
But, I am grateful for the smooth sale of our old house and the high level of contentment we have here in the new one. And we do have one piece of REALLY GOOD NEWS:
Come spring Charlotte and Hannah will welcome a sibling into our family!

Well, the comedy of errors continues. The thing was sent to the supervisor for approval at eight-thirty. The supervisor apparently didn't get it or couldn't see it, and then she was gone for the day. So, I've been promised that if it's not here when I get up in the morning, she'll follow up and get it done. So, another day goes by and I am now really up against it in terms of getting to the bank and still being able to cook and do stuff I need to do. If it's here and I'm up by ten, then it will be okay. Later than that is going to be a real problem and I don't even know if the bank closes early.

Crazy, infuriating, and exasperating.

Hello, everyone.
-
I just returned from what I hope is my last medical appointment of 2024. I need to have a little surgery and have been waiting to see the surgeon since last spring. My appointments have been cancelled, the rescheduled repeatedly. I was scheduled to see him tomorrow, Christmas Eve, but the office called this morning and asked me to come in today. Finally! I am now off until Jan 3rd — and need every bit if it.
-
Sorry to hear about your bronchitis, DR Ginny. What a disappointment for you. Vibes of health and recovery.

Has anyone heard hoe DR Iris’ surgery went?
-
I'm ready to kill myself and damn well may. They finally sent the payment. I went to the site and it asks for an access code, which they e-mail you. Okay. Only it didn't work. I clicked resend. Nothing. A third time - nothing. And apparently that was IT - no more tries and now they say they'll send a check in seven to ten days. I cannot do this. I cannot have this. I cannot ask the car dealer to wait anymore. I've called and written everyone and no one's there. I have no idea if they can fix this or not. Merry effing Christmas.

-
My favorite things this year were the four amazing trips we took. I think we just made up for the year of covid.
-
For various and sundried reasons.
-
'night
-
One of the best things of my year are all of you folks here.
-
Good night, DR Jane.
-
Sorry to have missed DR Jeanne.
~~~MOST EXCELLENT VIBES OF ALL SORTS, INCLUDING MEDICAL~~~ for her!!!
-
:)
-
Good night, friends.
-
And others.
-
Monday evening greetings! I have made peace with our decision to stay home this week. We picked up a huge Kroger order and I’ve started preparing some of our favorite holiday dishes. Meanwhile, Rob and Mary Linda are kindly sending frequent photos of what we’re missing at their house.
That's wonderful, DR Ginny! What time should we be dropping by?
You’re always welcome, DR ChasSmith, but I should warn you that one of those items is lemon lime Jello cottage cheese surprise.
;D
I made lime congealed salad for a friend today. If that’s what she wants, it’s what I will make.
-
One of the best things of my year are all of you folks here.
I feel the same way, Singdaw. Y’all are family in the best sense.
-
:)
I love this.
-
I’m watching The Nativity Story. Plain. Effective. Powerful.
-
I finally finished my advent calendar puzzle for day 23. It’s the only day this month I have been this late.
-
One corner and this jigsaw will be done.
-
Tomorrow I will decorate the gingerbread house.
-
At least that is the plan.
-
Onward!
-
Seven!
-
Heavenly seven!
-
I got a hat from Amazon yesterday. One size fits all.
-
Except it doesn’t fit.
Cutting into the Christmas cranberry-pistachio cake
Ooo...looks good. :)
-
I also have to make the gingerbread cake tomorrow.
-
Also made a flourless chocolate cake today
(http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7820.0;attach=24685)
I must confess that this looks better...to me, at least. ;)
-
I am not a diabetic. Well, I keep trying to convince myself of that.
I hear ya. ::)
-
Ah, the page that shall not be named.
-
I've calmed down a wee bit, thanks to a nice dinner out with the Wechters.
-
We came back here and he showed me some videos we wrote and he directed for Playboy - little short comic sketches with a LOT of nudity - I star in almost all of them (no nudity, per my contract). The funny thing is I had no memory of ever having done them - when I watched them I kind of remembered a couple, but a couple were like watching something that happened in a dream.
-
But the thing this afternoon was the straw that broke the Kimmel's back - their system completely malfunctioning and I have to pay the price. Just hope it can be fixed in the morning so I can actually enjoy the Do and Christmas Day. I'm tired of asking for vibes and xylophones - they've been great and have mostly worked, but this afternoon sent me into such a rage that I never ever want to go in again. A true comedy of errors sans the comedy and loading up on the errors.
-
Vibes for BK. This sounds egregious and stupid.
-
Back, from four (4) hours of HELL, to wit:
The bank - No problem. In and out. Done.
Store #1 - HELL. They inexplicably had almost nothing I was there for, and someone I (happily) hadn't seen in years found me and put me through HELL bringing me up to date on their life and that of others. Pure torture.
Store #2 - HELL. Nothing fancy, just plain HELL. Every which way.
Store #3 - Piece o' cake, since it's right next door to Store #2 and I could walk in, buy one thing, and get my ASS out.
Store #4 - Walked in, took one look around, and walked right back out. I didn't need it THAT bad.
Gas station - Put 2 gallons of gas in the can I brought with me for the snowblower, etc. All fine, except it didn't spit out a receipt after I said "yes" to "do you want a receipt?"
The traffic: I only got about four miles from my house (as the crow flies - till somebody shoots the bastard down), and it was HELL the entire way. From what I could see in a couple of places, the opposing traffic had it even worse. Still...
Yikes! :o
-
Finished an interesting book today. Truman Capote’s Summer Crossing. It’s totally predictable, but as a first novel, it’s good and points the way for what is to come. Some very good passages.
-
Hi, George.
-
I need sleep.
-
But I want to finish this movie first.
-
Hi, John.
-
I went shopping today mostly for my sister. She needed me to go to Trader Joes, Costco (including eggs), AND Fred Meyer (which is right next to Costco).
-
But there’s a half hour left.
-
Gratuitous Post #201!!
-
Gratuitous post 201!
-
I went and brought her her stuff, then I had to go to Fred Meyer for myself. It would not have been possible for me to get her stuff AND my stuff, so I went twice.
-
Obviously I can’t count.
-
THEN, I went back to Costco for more eggs for my sister and for me. I found out that the price of eggs at Fred Meyer made it worth going back to Costco. ::) Then, I came home.
-
Obviously I can’t count.
I couldn't either, but I updated my post. ;)
-
Sounds like an ordeal.
-
Now, I need to ketchup on the rest of today's posts.
-
Let’s get off this page.
-
Eight!
-
Sounds like an ordeal.
It was quite the ordeal!
-
I was at the computer and everything was going well.....when I was struck with a bout of some kind of sickness.
I have been lying down since 10:30 a.m. and feeling a bit better.
Oh, no! :o Glad you're feeling better, even a bit.
-
I did get a pleasant little check so that was nice.
Cool!
-
I just read Rodzinskis story about Fred and I’m crying
Thank you… and sorry!
-
Pasta is made for the tuna pasta salad - now to add the tuna, red onions, and some mayo.
-
I enjoyed listening to DR RODZINSKI's story.
Thank you!
-
Page eight has made it's entrance.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done.
-
Catching up after a day down in normal Washington, doing passport stuff for the kids.
-
I took home half my dinner, so I'm eating the other half now.
-
Why not?
-
Sometimes, you just have to do it.
-
Can't let it go to waste.
-
That would be unseemly.
-
I am so ready for this day to be done.
-
SO ready.
-
Ready as can be.
-
Ready as a can of Ready Whip.
-
Ready or not, end the damn day.
-
TOD:
My favorite things about this past year are few, sad to say. The most memorable positives are my two cataract surgeries which have allowed me to discard wearing glasses for anything (except sun glasses, that is).
Another positive is the truly wonderful tale of Fred written by Rodzinski. I really enjoyed reading it, and it would make a wonderful feel-good movie with character studies aplenty.
I tried to listen, as well, but it did not sound like his voice to me. Wasn't that an AI-generated reading?
Thank you for such kind words. If you clicked the FSI green podcast thing at top, it was me. I think the website also has AI read the stories on another spot you might have clicked. A third possibility is I sound very much like AI!
-
Mmm ready whip…
-
Ginny! Amazing news!
-
Happy Birthday to Lord WFO!
-
Ron, wish you could go to Pasadena and work on the float.
-
BK, inexplicable shenanigans! Foiled by humans and technology both!
-
ChasSmith was just a couple Hells short of Ida Lupino in Private Hell #36.
-
Highs and lows of 2024?
Spent the year writing/editing stories about cemeteries and death care. The pay ain’t great but the schedule is flexible and the staff is nice.
Went on a couple nice trips. Got chased out of a cemetery in Hawaii which is what I get for mixing business with family time.
Managed to lose some weight I might just add back on this week if I’m not careful.
Got a grand niece and grand nephew on the way.
Downs?
Our gas oven is a lemon and we can’t get anyone to work on it, and I don’t know how we’ll get it out of the house ever.
Depressing state of world affairs; I’ll leave it at that.
-
Trying to learn French. Slow and steady.
-
Goodbye, this page.
-
Hello, this page.
-
Page nine has made its entrance.
-
And so have I.
-
New notes are written.
-
Now I must complete the tuna pasta salad and then begin slicing and dicing and mincing.
-
Onion and mushrooms sliced and diced, not necessarily in that order.
-
Just the garlic left to mince, but that's what takes a lot of time.
-
But I will finish it this evening.
-
Where's George and his Jamburrito?
-
Not here.
-
I'm here.
-
But George isn't.
-
Clearly.
-
New notes are up.
-
Up are new notes.
-
I've seen them.
-
I've read them.
-
I wrote them.
-
My back is so sore from sitting and then the two batches of tuna pasta salad and the slicing and dicing.
-
I have to take a small break.
-
And I don't care who knows it.
-
I still have to do my nightly warm salt water rinse.
-
Thankfully, I showered earlier.
-
Still and all, we're getting it done.
-
Someone has to Do it.
-
TOD - I started 2024 with Covid and I’m ending it with bronchitis and threw in a little thing called cancer in between. Add to that the deaths of one beloved relative and two special librarian friends and this year has been a real dumpster fire.
But, I am grateful for the smooth sale of our old house and the high level of contentment we have here in the new one. And we do have one piece of REALLY GOOD NEWS:
Come spring Charlotte and Hannah will welcome a sibling into our family!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congrats on the new sibling!! :D
-
Do it for the Do.
-
George has shown up.
-
Did he bring his jam and burrito?
-
One wonders.
-
Topic of the Day: I stage managed TWO shows for the very first time...and got paid for BOTH! ;D
-
PAGE TEN DANCE!!
-
I think page ten is waiting in the wings.
-
See?
-
Changing to topic.
-
Well, the comedy of errors continues. The thing was sent to the supervisor for approval at eight-thirty. The supervisor apparently didn't get it or couldn't see it, and then she was gone for the day. So, I've been promised that if it's not here when I get up in the morning, she'll follow up and get it done. So, another day goes by and I am now really up against it in terms of getting to the bank and still being able to cook and do stuff I need to do. If it's here and I'm up by ten, then it will be okay. Later than that is going to be a real problem and I don't even know if the bank closes early.
Darn! >:(
