Tonight's presentation of all six of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos by the "Symphony Space All-Stars" was quite nice. This was the first time I've ever heard all six of them in one sitting, live or otherwise, and it turned out to be not so daunting an evening as I thought it would be. -I do think there could be such a thing as "too much Bach" in one sitting.
Since they used a very small ensemble - usually just one player per part - the textures and counterpoint were very clean and clear. They closed with No. 5, and not only was it fun to listen to, but it was also fun to watch. You could literally see the melodic line being passed from one instrument/player to the next. I also got a kick out of hearing the second one featuring an E-flat clarinet in place of the usual trumpet.
