Jack Jones - Wives and Lovers
Nat King Cole - many of those mentioned, plus The Ballad of Cat Ballou, Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer, and Jeepers Creepers

Perry Como sang a grand rendition of Rodgers and Hart's "Mountain Greenery" in WORDS AND MUSIC, and it has ALWAYS been one of my favorite songs by him. Otherwise, the usual suspects: "Maginc Moments," "Catch a Falling Star," "Round and Round."

The Perry Como section of FOREVER PLAID was always a fun part of the show, and I enjoyed singing all of the songs in it.

Rehearsal was OKAY last night - some tech problems caused by a teenager who knows EVERYTHING and spends more time blaming someone else when she makes a mistake than just saying, I made a mistake - and contradicting me, which is NOT a good idea, she found out.

It would be a terrible tragedy if she quit.

I think they should have called it TOMA THE CAT OF THE SAMURAI!  ;D

As for Nat King Cole, I liked him, but not as much as Como (whose TV show I never missed).

"Mona Lisa" certainly stays in my memory, and I liked the ballad of CAT BALLOU, too. "Unforgettable," yep. I'm sure there are others, but I don't have many records around here with his vocals, so perhaps I should do some research.

Jack Jones: the theme from THE LOVE BOAT would be one of my favorites as well as "Lollipops and Roses."

However, I'm actually more a fan of his father's work - the 1936 movie SHOW BOAT, "Alone" in A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, etc.

OMG DR MATTH - I also love Como's version of MOUNTAIN GREENERY, had forgotten all about it.  Wow!

Song stylists.

OF course then there is also Vic Damone... and Matt Munro.  A brief listen to any recording made by any of these guys would show how really awful the "singers" on a show like American Idol really are....ugh.

I found some interesting DVD annoncements this morning while surfing the net:

Warner Bros. has announced The Adventures of Superman: The Complete First Season for release on 10/18 (SRP $39.98). The 5-disc set will include all 26 first-season episodes of the classic, 1950s series, which starred George Reeves.

This will be of particular interest to some of the folks here.

On September 6th, Paramount is releasing quite a few classics, but the two I thought would be of particular interest:

Preston Sturges' THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK

and

the much-requested 1954 musical RED GARTERS !!!!!

Warners is supposedly working on a musical boxed set that will include: TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY, ZIEGFELD FOLLIES, SUMMER STOCK, THREE LITTLE WORDS, and IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER.

No word on release date so I'm assuming 2006.

Fred Astaire's DADDY LONG LEGS is also being worked on right now, and its potential release date is also said to be 2006.

Saturday greetings!  I've been watching y'all come and go - like Grand Hotel - but just now can post with some assurance that my manager won't come sneaking up on me!  Yes, I'm at work on this gloriously cool (after some brutal heat and humidity) Saturday.  Getting a lot of "behind the scenes" work done before my afternoon of information-waitressing begins at 1pm.

DR elmore - I'm glad your trip to DC was so productive.  Wish I could have been part of your research team.

DR Ginny, So what are your plans for NYC--how long are you going to be in town?

DR Danise - I will arrive on Monday, October 3, early afternoon, and my flight to Atlanta is Thursday, October 6, at 3pm out of LaGuardia.

Off to play the wedding with all the "new age" music.  I got a few of the Christopher O'Reilt pieces sorta down, it's all about decyphering his style on the page and how it should sound buy listening to the recording.  After the wedding, it's Paris preparation for the rest of the day.  Can't believe I'm leaving the country for the first time... for real... I don't count Mexico :)

Whenever I think of Jack Jones, I think of the story that Faith Prince tells in her club act (and subsequent cd, "A Leap of Faith") of him going up on the lyric of "Come Back To Me."

DR divarobbie - thanks for the heads-up on this CD.  I just went upstairs to the AV department in my library, found it, and am now enjoying!

70 Girls 70 is one of my favorite K&E scores, too.  Rodzinski, it's based on the old film "Make Mine Mink," though the musical has a "play within a play" format.  And actually, the first pressing of the LP at least had a little insert that gave a precis and also had cast info.  A CD was released years ago, you can probably find it on eBay or used record stores.  Speaking of which, I found a used LP copy here in Portland that evidently belonged to none other than Dorothea Freitag (care to speculate on how that happened, Elmore?).  Not only did it have her signature and a bunch of handwritten notes inside, the insert had a bunch of her little notations, too.  Like an idiot, I sold it years ago.

Liza does a great version of "Yes" on "Liza with a Z".  Fantastic orchestration.

I especially love the verse -

Maybe I'm old-fashioned
Feeling like I do
Maybe I am living in the past
But when I meet the right one
I know that I'll be true
My first love will be my last

I've never heard a recording that had the verse.  Why doesn't anyone sing the verses to the old songs anymore??

But before I go, I just wanted to say that June 27 was Antoinette Perry's birthday!  She was born in 1888.  Also (Danise), it was Michael Ball's birthday.  He was born much later...1962.  Just had to share. ;D
