A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO SEPTEMBER

Well, you've read the notes, you've given a round of applause, a hip hip hooray, and a hearty hallelujah, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - which will be sometime after they realize it is no longer August.

My all-time favorite TV variety shows?  At the top of my list are of course "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Muppet Show."  They were the best.  My I vaguely remember watching "Laugh-In" and "Sonny and Cher" and "The Cher Show" (or whatever the real title was).  I also remember that we watched "Donny and Marie," but not much else about it.

Oh...I submitted a correction at IMDb.com!  I was looking up variety shows and I thought about Sha Na Na's variety show and that my sister and I used to watch it (I can remember that we liked it, but even at that age we knew that it wasn't "good" ::) ).  Anyway, I didn't remember at all that Pamela Myers was on the show!  So I clicked on her IMDb.com listing and saw in the Trivia section that it said that she Was nominated for Broadway's 1977 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Musical) for "Company."

Hmmm...I didn't think that someone could be nominated for a Broadway performance five years after the show closed!  So I confirmed what I knew to be the correct date (1971 Tony Awards®) and submitted the change. ;D

Must also add "In Melbourne Tonight" and "The Graham Kennedy Show" - Both hosted by the late Mr Kennedy and I think both had a certain MusicGuy as a regular guest.

Good morning, all!  I was out too late, and I'm feeling the effects this morning:  not enough sleep, headache, and a vague sense of forgetting something really important.

Once again, if any DRs can get a chance to see TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA in Central Park, do not miss it.  I doubt this show, unlike the misguided ON THE TOWN, will transfer, and it's a lovely way to spend a nice evening in Central Park.

TOD:  The Garry Moore Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Ed Sullivan.

Good morning, DR Elmore.  Thanks for recommending TWO GENTLEMEN.  It's now on our to-do list.

Favorite variety shows:  Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie, Carol Burnett

Variety shows that were short-lived but for which I played the audio tape over and over:  The Funny Side, The Hudson Brothers, and (dare I admit it lest I sound like a stalker  :) ) Dinah Shore and Friends

I remember when Laugh In first hit the airwaves, that there were members of the Burbank Women's Club that my mother belonged to who insisted that it had to be a local show, and not broadcast nationally.  "No one else is going to get all those Burbank jokes!" they would say.

September is Baby Safety Month.

September is Backpack Safety Month.

Never put your baby in a backpack, or make your baby wear one.

September is International People Skills Month.

September is International Gay Squaredancing Month.

An important skill, indeed!

September is also National Honey Month, National Mushroom Month, National Chicken Month, National Biscuit Month...

Sounds like dinner!

...National Potato Month, National Rice Month, Hug a Texas Chef Month, and Mom and Apple Pie Month.

And, just so we can fix the blame...

September is National Piano Month!

I fulfilled two of S Woody's September things yesterday!
1.

September is Baby Safety Month.
I watched THE PACIFIER on dvd - would you trust your baby to Vin Diesel?
2.

September is National Piano Month!
My accompanist, Matt, done with the five summer shows he played, came over and we went over the songs I'm singing at Dad's Memorial Service AND took a good hard look at the songs we'd assembled for a country-flavored cabaret; so, the piano (and my voice) got a three hour workout.

Now that it's officially September, I guess I'll have to do it all again.  ;)

Oh, I almost forgot.  I really got a real kick out of THE MELBA MOORE-CLIFTON DAVIS SHOW.   I don't remember whether it was well-received, but my family loved it.

Woman's Job Goes to Dogs
Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Would you risk your job to help two dogs in trouble?
Valerie Cheatham, a longtime employee of a Neiman Marcus  store in Atlanta, did just that — and may have been fired for her efforts.

Cheatham, 46, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it all began on Aug. 2, when outdoor temperatures were about 90 degrees and she spotted two white poodles locked inside an expensive vehicle in the store's parking lot.

"I walked out the door, saw the dogs, went back into the store and got the phone number for Fulton County Animal Control and wrote down the tag number," said Cheatham. "I went out a second time and checked the doors and they were locked."

The sunroof was open, and Cheatham went back inside again, then came out a third time with a paper bowl and a bottle of water. But she couldn't reach the sunroof.

"I'm 5-2," she explained. "I took my shoes off and got on the hood."

Just then, according to Cheatham, the car's owner came out in a rage.

"She was just screaming," said Cheatham, who added that the angry woman called her "fat and ugly" and told her to get off the "$80,000 car."

Then, Cheatham said, came the clincher.
"I hope you're somebody," the car owner allegedly said, "because I'm going to have your job."

Two days later, Cheatham came into work and was told she no longer had a job.

This tale, from Out There! concludes with:

Quote
A Neiman Marcus spokeswoman said Cheatham had been a "glorified secretary" who had been in trouble before.

No sexism here!

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]! ! ! ! !  GLORIOUS SEPTEMBER VIBES FOR ONE AND ALL AND ALL AND ONE  ! ! ! ! ! [/move]

September has always been my favorite month.  There is always such a sense of promise and renewal in the air.  I'm sure this feeling primarily has to do with when the new school year started, with new classes, teachers, books and school supplies and all.  But there was also the new fall TV season, the crisp, cool, refreshing weather, the start of the football season and the beginning of the anticipation for the coming holidays.  Whatever it was, it's still with me and I still love it.

Good morning. We got some cooler morning air to start September, and I am very grateful for it. I hope it continues with the additional hope that the daytime temperatures will start to drop.

One thing I've been meaning to mention for a couple of days is that after years and years and years (read decades) of wrangling, the North Carolina legislature passed the lottery referendum and the governor signed it into law. We will have a state lottery!

NC was the only East Coast state not to have one despite the OVERWHELMING majority of people in the state wanting it. With gas prices way, way up, at least soon folks won't have to drive to SC or Virginia to play the lottery if they want to.

Elmore's mentioning of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA drove me to the review in VARIETY (mixed-to-negative), but I was pleased to see an actress from ONE LIFE TO LIVE in the cast playing Silvia - Renee Elise Goldsberry. How great for her! She occasionally gets to sing on the show (ONE LIFE has quite a few singers in the cast both male and female), so this is a nice showcase for her. The VARIETY critic gave her a very positive review, too.
