Herewith begineth my report on the B/K-less Hainesy/Kimlet gathering of 5 October 2005

After much solicitous fussing by my Joe, I took the Island of Long Road of Rail into the City in the early afternoon.  Not having ridden the rails for many years, I was a novice to the ticket machines, the double-decker trains, and especially to the Easy Pass, which makes riding the subway oh so very much easier.  And you can purchase the Easy Pass out here at the train station, so there are no lines to wait in at when you get into New York.

I first went to visit an old friend whom I haven't seen in decades.  We met, as I said, in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (hereinafter the BMILEMTW, or perhaps just the Workshop).  Michael was the musical director for Joel Crothers' nightclub act in the 70's, and as Joel sang a couple of songs that Michael and I wrote, I had snuck a portable cassette recorder into Les Mouches back in 1979 and recorded the whole act.

I recently found the cassette, and I brought it in to Michael's studio for him to transfer it to CD for me.

After a couple of hours of maudlin remeniscing and doodling old songs on the piano, I began my hunt for the H/Ks and the Food Glorious Food and Walking Tour.

Hey Der B.  Is your toaster working well?

Great!

One review says:

Quote
Among the relatively few toasters that can toast four slices at once, this model has seven toast color settings that consistently provide a good range of doneness. There’s an easy-to-clean electronic control panel with touch pads for the toast, bagel, defrost, reheat, and stop settings; a pull-out crumb tray; and a wraparound cord. The self-centering mechanism accommodates bread of any thickness, including half of a thick “New York” bagel, even if its cut is slightly uneven. The lever can be boosted above its up position to raise small, hard-to-retrieve items.

Did a pair of English Muffins this mourning.

And for the first time ever - my liverwurst on toasted rye had the whole length of the bread nicel tosted!

der Brucer (apparently after Ellen did her coming out thing, they stopped giving away the free toasters.

Time for the bedroom areas to be cleaned, and then another full night of TV for me. At least with the baseball playoffs, there are some shows that won't have to be recorded.

New Adventures Ahead!

Does everyone remember Domino, the Dalmatian der B and I found wandering in our neighborhood, who we returned to his owner a couple of times?  Well, said owner dropped by this morning, asking if we "knew anyone" who would be able to take care of Domino for a couple of weeks.

Here's the Email I sent out to some rescue folk:

Quote
Mike, a local construction worker (who seems to evening over in homes he is constructing) owns Domino, an 8 year un-neutered male Dalmatian (with a very good disposition) - who had been running loose in the neighborhood on a regular basis.

Mike is in the process of moving and intends to ship Domino to Texas to be with his son in a few weeks - 'til then Domino will be hanging around with Mikes friends - who let him run lose.

Domino has spent a few hours in our yard without incident - but we did keep our un-neutered male Lab mix in side (they did meet for a bit with no fighting - but spending the night would be a different matter.

Mike says Domino is up to date on all is shots.

If we can't find a temporary spot for this fella, I fear he will be roaming the streets for many days - not a good thing.

Any ideas on who might help?

I sure liked the reponse I got:

Quote
I feel bad for Domino because
apparently his so called owner Mike is so irresponsible that poor boy has no home base.

These are the people who should not have dogs.

He might not run as much if he were neutered.

Sounds to me like Mike needs to move up the date
he is sending Domino to his son.

He needs to take some responsibility for his
dog, you shouldn't have to deal with it.

Great - forget abou the dog - give the owner parenting classes.

Better yet, spend your own time and energy to get Domino neutered.

Hell, if all dog owners were "responsible" there would be no need for animal rescue!

At least Mike was responsible enough to care that Domino was running loose, and took some action to try and get help.

NYC Increases Subway Security After Safety Threats

Thursday, October 06, 2005

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the FBI has shared with city officials a "specific threat" to the New York subway system, and is asking the public to be vigilant.

Authorities were increasing mass transit security after word of a credible threat of a bombing on the city's subway system, a law enforcement official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the threat is "specific to place, time and method."

I would say don't confuse it with the WFO Cabernet Label - but I suspect Long Island has yet to grow a red grape worth stomping.

And LOST CHILDREN (not the correct title) about Jewish children who were given away by their families so that they would survive the war.

This synopsis sounded familiar, but not the titles that Der Brucer suggested (Secret Lives and The Children of Chabannes), and I remembered that a couple of years ago I bought my dad a DVD called Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport.  Evidently, it wasn't a unique idea for a documentary.

Evening folks.  This is Danise, posting as Danise.

Jane and I had a wonderful day doing our own walking tour.  She wanted to see Macys and I wanted to see Grand Central Station.  We also walked back to that little shop I saw the other night and I had a chance to see that little jacket I thought I wanted.  After seeing it up close and personal, I didn’t like it as well.  At least I am content that I didn’t miss out on something I really wanted.

We were going to go up by Tower records but we changed our minds.  I think it was just to far to walk even with the subway ride.

I am tired.  Very tired.  I think I am starting to wind down. As much as I have enjoyed myself, I am getting pretty close to being more than ready to go home.  I want my own bed with Bear sleeping next to me, even if he does take up more room then his fair share.

I am looking forward to seeing Fiddler tonight.  I might try to go see POTO tomorrow night if I get back in town soon enough.

If anyone wants to meet for breakfast or lunch on Saturday, please let me know.  I won’t be leaving until late that after noon.  My flight is at 7:30 pm so I guess they will pick me up around five.

I just want to thank you all again for making this the very best trip ever.  You guys (and gals) are wonderful and I am so very glad that I got to meet as many of you as I have in person.

Guess I’d better start getting ready for the show.  I might stop off someplace and get a quick bite to eat or I might wait until after the show.  I’m to tired to even think about right now.
 :)

I am gathering stuff for a garage sale next Saturday.  Boy, one accumulates a lot of crap over a lifetime.  I'm thinking of putting all my Elvis soundtracks from all his bad movies into the sale.  Are things worth anything?  Should I take them to Ameoba instead?  I mean I have two boxed sets of the essential  Elvis with all his greatest hits on them.  Do I really need the songs from Harum Scarum.  I saw a bit of this epic a few weeks back and it is utterly forgettable, as are the musical numbers.

Out of the way out-of-towners always pray that the enemy has good aim. A lousy shot at the White House would end up in my front yard!

And to think, on the long trudge to the restaurant last evening, I was chatting with WFO and remarked that after 9/11, the odds of a repeat attack were less. Seems I was half right, different mechanism, same target.

Recognizing that there is no personal distinction between being hit on the head with an HBomb or a fifty pound sack of potatoes, I must give enormous credit to the British for keepinga stiff upper lip during the Blitz, and the Israelis who don't know form one of one year to another when the next nut will implode.

Also, I never understood why after 9/11 everyone was afraid of flying - they should have been afraid of high rise ofiices!

On a similar irrational note, I read today:

Quote
In California, Arizona, New Mexico and more, left-wing lawmakers have repeatedly tried to give illegal aliens the right to get state drivers licenses! State drivers’ licenses are the most recognized legal form of identification we use in the U.S.
...

These state lawmakers seem to have forgotten that a number of the 9/11 terrorists had acquired drivers’ licenses.

Well the chicken little author seems to forget that every one of the 9/11 terrorists entered this country legally, and had appropriate, legal, paperwork to justify a driver's license! ow by the time of 9/11 some of the terroists Visa's had expired. If we were really worried about the repeat a event patterend after 9/11, shouldn'y we be spending lots of bucks rounding up folks with expired Visas than on building our own Berlin wall on our Southern Border.  And where is the wall, protecting us from terorists from Canda - the only known terrorist to enter the US came from Canada, not Mexico.

These silly politicians and pundits remind me of the drunk seraching for his car keys many blocks away from where he suspected he dropped them because "the lights better here".

der Brucer

I'll still take the risk of riding the New York subways over the 7 hour demolition derby of driving back and forth for the visit.

The closest think I saw to mayhem on our trip was when a young oriental chap who was taking our picture for us, backed up into the street to get a wider view just as a van came careening aroung the corner - I don't think he even noticed that driver's last minute quick swerve - but some of us watching sure did.

der Brucer

On the brighter side - NYC has many, many dogs on leashes on walks throughtout the city, and I saw nary a pile of poo!

I checked my Netflix history (it had to be e-mailed to me) and I found that I had rented "Party Monster: The Shockumentary."  That was a very...interesting documentary of the people who were later fictionalized in the independent movie "Party Monster."

I don't want to speak on behalf of other NYC'ers, but we folks here at GMHC were just talking about the subway alert.  Our consensus was that most people outside NYC were worried about the safety factor.  (One counselor said his mom called him and insisted he take a cab home... to Brooklyn)  Those of us on the hotline were more concerned about how long it was going to take us to get home tonight and if there were any subway lines that we should avoid...

It's all about the practical side of things for us jaded new yorkers  :)
