DR Jrand53:  I'm virtually sure he said he was subbing for "Virginia"

I'd sub for "South Carolina" if I could, but I'm back in California, which needs no subs.  Iffen it did, I'm sure BK would step in and do the subbing thing.

Umm, td, so are you Tally?

Umm. . is there a Tally in the script?  I think not.  I will be portraying Carl Conklin White the head of the astronomy department, and if there is a *villain* in the piece, White's action would place him as the villain.

Anyway, rehearsals begin Tuesday night at 7pm.
My script is highlighted and bound; I shall re-read it later tonight. (When I'm not having a posting frenzy here at HHW).

I just finished a hamburger (grilled buns, grilled onions, mustard and lettuce/tomato) and a serving of potato salad.

It was good.  I couldn't get it seasoned enough to make it yummy, though.

Before anyone (TCB!!!) says anything about "grilled buns", I'm talking about bread....and not hot cross buns, either!

Just had a message from Mr. Harvey Schmidt saying he's taking me up on my offer to use the rest of this week for the cover art, should he need it.  So, I won't have it until Friday, Saturday or Monday, but it will give him the opportunity to get it the way he wants, which is what's really important.

Reminds me of the time I was in the police station, some of those cute cops sure did know how to grill buns properly. . .

Well, as you have already learned from others on this site, the fabled Northwest (hmm, I typed Nothwet, which would be something else entirely) snow has arrived.  I went to bed last night still doubting the storm would materialize (I believe in fairies, more than weathermen), and yet I woke to a beautiful blanket of white.  By 11:00 a.m. we had five inches, but in true manly fashion, I told the women downstairs that I had ten.  The snow completely stopped about an hour ago, but it is now back even stronger than before.  They are still saying that it will turn to rain this evening, but, just in case it doesn't, we have cancelled rehearsal for the murder mystery tonight.

I have the whole day AND evening free!

You know, it occurs to me, if we had as busy and afternoon and evening as we've had thus far we could conceivably pass 17,000 posts by midnight, a mere four days after passing 16,000 posts - THAT is pretty damnably amazing.

A posting frenzy for sure!

Barry Brown's lover who died from AIDS was the ever-wonderful Fritz Holt who's mentioned in Ted Chapin's book and who went on to become one of the Tony-winning producers of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.

One of the times I saw MAME, Helen Gallagher was playing Gooch.

In the next few posts, I'll have a couple of Playbills. I don't want to load up the server or any one page with too many photos.

Oh I almost forgot, I have photos to scan!

From October, 1962 - Come On Strong!  I wanted to see it because I wanted to see the girl from BIG COUNTRY and BUT NOT FOR ME and GIANT....and there she was!

I don't remember why Van signed it twice!  But Carroll Baker remains the MOST beautiful woman I have EVER seen in my life!  After signing autographs and telling us to send our friends to see the show, she (wearing a beautiful light brown fur coat) got into a big white limo with an old man....laughing that wonderful laugh....  I still lose my breath when I think about it.

Van walked away with someone I thought looked like Tommy Djilas from THE MUSIC MAN....and it might have been...LOL.  I worked with him the next summer in SHOWBOAT!

DR Jay and DR TCB should watch "Fairy Tale - a True Story"
Keep a look out for my Jewels TCB. (That should have a few people thinking!)

First off, here's the Playbill cover for THE WOMEN. I knew if I looked hard enough I could find it. (It was hidden between the pages of another Playbill, THE SUNSHINE BOYS.)

I have about ten Playbills that my grandmother gave me from her trip to NYC in early 1927. Here's the playbill for Gertrude Lawrence's OH KAY! Remember back in those early years, they didn't put the title or the stars on the outside covers, but if anyone wants to see the title page inside, I can scan that, too.

Another Broadway treasure: the fully autographed playbill of Visit to a Small Planet. Sure, it includes Cyril (the ultimate Captain Hook) Ritchard's autograph, but it's really treasured because it was sent to me by a new friend.

By the way, and strictly for the record, I do believe in fairies.

I have that Mary Martin PETER PAN on DVD (Cathy Rigby's, too). Yes, compared to Rigby's, it's dated, but I wouldn't give anything for possessing that wonderful record of one of Mary Martin's grandest performances.

Thanks Ron. It was a cryptic reference to a DVD but I knew someone would respond. I guess there's no market for second hand (well a hell of lot more than second hand) jewels these days.

I share the views on Michael Berresse's performance as Bill in KISS ME KATE. What a spectacular dancer, acrobat he is. Glad I have that KISS ME KATE performance on DVD even if the knuckleheaded director Michael Blakemore cut to reaction shots instead of letting us see every second of that breathtaking "Bianca" number.

I'm jealous of those of you who have gotten to meet him in the flesh.  I should have hung around the Martin Beck stage door after the performance. Argh! (It was nice to see him in A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE the other night.)

Can anyone....anyone???....explain the appeal of Van Johnson to me?

I have never liked him and find his presence in some films irksome in the extreme.

I have a friend who dined in Johnson's NYC apartment -- lavishly appointed it is/was.  I even got pictures from a Thanksgiving meal there.

I'm sure he's a nice person.  But just not for me, I guess....

I have few theater mementos, but not very many.  I don’t even keep souvenirs from most of the shows that I have done myself.  I didn’t even know how many shows I had done till someone counted them up for me several years ago (I haven’t kept count much better since).  I have my Once Upon A Mattress program signed by Imogene Coca, King Donavon, and Edward Everett Horton; probably two or three Peter Pan Playbills signed by Sandy Duncan (I saw it four or five times), and two copies of the Playbill from the first preview of Titanic-The Musical which contains the songs that were later cut and also has the original Titanic poster design with the black background and the word Titanic as part of the design of the ship.

I have some other autographed photos (Angela Lansbury, Antonio Banderas, Streisand) and some other autographed CDs (including Night of the Hunter, BK, signed by Stephen Cole) and Playbills, but they are mostly tucked away in boxes.

I agree with LC that some of my best mementos are my memories of celebrities that I have met and talked to who were kind and generous with their time.

Just remember the snowman rule: He can only be as anatomically correct as the official number of inches that fell.  In this case, he's gotta be a fiver!
