PIC OF THE DAY

Controversy Sprouts Over Prince's Super Bowl Halftime Show
Quote
Wednesday, February 07, 2007
 NEW YORK  —

In the sensitive post-wardrobe malfunction world, some are questioning whether a guitar was just a guitar during Prince's Super Bowl halftime show.

Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the "Purple Rain" segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

A number of bloggers have decried "Malfunction!" — including Sam Anderson at New York magazine's Daily Intelligencer. Daily News television critic David Bianculli called it "a rude-looking shadow show" that "looked embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed."

MattH asked about the actor who played Stevie in last night's HouseL

Jake Richardson:

Guest spots on Bones ,Medium, Cold Case. ER, Monk
Regular in Invasion

I watch all of those shows except ER, but I'm sure I'm remembering him from INVASION.

Thank you, DR dB.

Just read a Warners press release about another terrific DVD box set coming on March 5. It's another literary classics set with, among other films:

BILLY BUDD

MADAME BOVARY

THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1948)

and two versions of THE PRISONER OF ZENDA.

Folks were asking about having trouble getting on the site -- I tried to get on earlier today and it wouldn't let me access for a while -- maybe it has something to do with sunspots or a solar flare or the hydrogen ion content in the air...

Yes!  I've had that set pre-ordered a month or so....ordered it at the same time I ordered the Alice Faye box set.

The Ronald Colman "Prisoner of Zenda" is the crown jewel of that set, with "Billy Budd" a very close second.

Hmmm... Dickens -- his books--  A Christmas Carol and Tale of Two Cities

My favorite Dickens?  Cason could be a "little Dickens" sometimes when he was little -- and sometimes in middle school -- so Cason is my favorite little Dickens.

And now I'm heading down to clean the den and then settle in with TV/DVDs. It's early enough that I might be able to get some of THE HEIRESS watched.

Anyone live near Kansas City where a Chemical Plant Exploded??  The caption on the pop-up picture says:

A huge billowing cloud of smoke shrouds the downtown skyline of Kansas City, Mo.,Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, as a fire burns at a chemical plant in an industrial area of the city. The explosions and fire at the Chem Central plant in the area known as the East Bottoms, just northeast of downtown, billowed smoke that could be seen for miles. (AP Photo/Cliff Schiappa)

Someone posted:

Now we need a complete unexpurgated Blitzstein THREEPENNY OPERA to compliment it

I suspect they meant complement, with an "e".
I suspect they wish I'd just shut-up.

Actually, I'm glad you told me.  I have the same problem with capital and principle, and as I typed "compliment," I was wondering if I'd chosen the correct one.

For those who recall the Sunday meeting I attended, it was with the young woman who won the talent contest that I judged at Sterling's night club.  Part of her winning that contest was performing an act at the club.  So, she met with many recommended directors (including two of my fellow judges and myself).  She just called and told me she would like me to be the one to direct her show, and I've said yes.  It will be happening in early April.  Not much dough involved but I like her and her energy.

That is wonderful! Perhaps you have discovered a new star!

DR MissKaren, I'm okay.  I'm feeling a mite puny today and it could be stress or I could be finally coming down with something.

I just got back from a lovely visit with Liz and Ann Callaway and Alex Rybeck, which was a great deal of fun, and now I'm back to my taxes.

:( I'm sure stress is playing a role (they say it can wreak havoc on your immune system) and with all you've had on your plate lately...Hope you're back to your ol' self again soon! :-* (better get out my dictionary and make sure I spelled wreak and havoc correctly -- don't want a note from Mr. Webster der Brucer....)....

Noted, dear sir -- of course, you and Mr. Barnum are correct -- he is a star, and a shiny one at that -- so I'll amend that to say a "paid" star -- gotta make some dinero to help put vittles on that table...
