Just heard DR Ben's review of The Fantasticks, and, as usual, "They Were You" made me cry.

Ginny, thanks! I love that song (They Were You). It's my favorite song in the show and one of my all-time favorite songs of any genre. It would be in my Top 10 list of show songs on any day.

I went back to bed for a little while, now I'm up.  I may take a little drive before doing some writing - then again, I may not.  Then again, I may not do any writing.  Then again, I may.

Jose, Nope, don't speak French to any proficient degree.  Many translators/adapters don't speak the language of the plays they adapt.  Often they are given a literal translation of the play and work from that or...as in my case...I digested and referred to four different translations of the play and, from those, did a version (freely adapted) in my own words.

BK - How does someone apply to be part of the L.A. Musical Theater festival?  or is it by referral or recommendation only?

It's Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance

I would guess CATS is Feet of Clay

The Fantasticks is now on the list of shows Richard and I hope to see in late June/early July when we're next in NYC.  Do you think it will still be playing then?

I think I've told this story here before:  Richard and I were falling in love at the time I was playing The Mute in the DR-Elmore-directed production here in Middletown.  "They Were You" sort of became our song, to the extent that we included it in the pre-ceremony music at our wedding.  It was being played just as many of our theatre friends, including the pianist and the people who'd played El Gallo, Matt, Luisa, and one of the fathers were taking their seats.

Great FANTASTICKS review from DR BEN.

We are doing the show in August, and I am hoping it's a GOOD production.

I just felt like cooking brunch for the house today, so...
Sounds delicious, DR Jose.

And while we're on the topic of FOOD: seeing as how Paula Deen came up in discussion the other day, has anyone ever tried making her "Better Than Sex" cake?

[sorry, haven't quite mastered the art of linking yet...]

1 (18.25-ounce) box yellow cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
1 (20-ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 1/3 cups sugar
1 (3.4-ounce) box French vanilla pudding, plus ingredients to prepare
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 cup flaked, sweetened toasted coconut

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Prepare yellow cake mix as directed using a greased 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. While cake is baking, combine the pineapple and 1 cup of sugar in a saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium heat stirring constantly. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Remove cake from oven and using a fork, pierce holes into cake. Pour pineapple mixture over hot cake and set aside.

Prepare pudding according to package directions. Spread pudding over cake and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Whip heavy cream and remaining sugar until stiff. Cover top of cake with whipped cream and sprinkle toasted coconut on top.

As I inferred the other day (or did I imply), I went to the press conference and I have no idea how they're finding material.  I said that I hoped it wasn't going to remain the clique-ridden thing this woman has always done - using the usual suspects for the shows, directors, creative teams - it's such a bore.  I'm going to try and have a meeting with her to see what's what.  I do know that Michael Kerker was going to talk to her about me and The Brain - but I won't know more until I get a meeting.

It's a very windy day here, but the sun is shining bright. They have a neat little area set up with a counter, bar stools and a strip of outlets so you can play on your computer and charge it all at the same time

Ginny, I think Fantasticks should still be running. It's available on the half-price ticket booth but that's no indication of good or bad business, most shows appear at the booth at some point. I haven't heard any news about any closing so I think you'll be able to see the show.
