When my first relationship broke up after almost eight years, I went back into doing community theater in a big way, and the theater where I worked the most invited me to jooin their volunteer organziation called First Nighters. This group sold concessions, ushered, planned projects to raise money for the theater, assisted at auditions. So, I spent almost all my free time at the theater, and after a year or so, I was elected secretary, a position I retained for about six years. It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it.

However, as I started doing more shows away from that theater, I didn't have as much time to lend a hand there, so I had to resign. Would you believe since I left First Nighters, I have never been cast in a single show at that theater.

The problem with shows directed by the fellow who's doing The Full Monty (the LA flavor of the year), is that the agency who represents him also represents most of the theater acting talent in LA and it's all very incestuous.  That said, the San Diego theater is clearly a combo platter of Equity/non-Equity, so they only have a limited number of Equity contracts and I'm sure whether a non-Equity person gets a major role is wholly dependent on whether the director/agency can fill that role with an Equity friend.

A Calvert woman claims her 2-year-old golden retriever saved her life Friday by giving her the canine version of the Heimlich maneuver.

“The doctor said I probably wouldn’t be here without Toby,” said Debbie Parkhurst, 45, a jewelry artist who lives near Rising Sun High School with her husband, Kevin, and their two dogs. “I keep looking at him and saying ‘You’re amazing.’”

Parkhurst said she was home alone with the dogs Friday afternoon when she decided to snack on an apple.

Suddenly, she said, a chunk of the fruit became wedged in her windpipe.

“It was lodged pretty tight because I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I tried to do the thing where you lean over a chair and give yourself the Heimlich, but it didn’t work.”

Parkhurst said she then began beating her chest, an action that might have attracted Toby’s attention.

“The next think I know, Toby’s up on his hind feet and he’s got his front paws on my shoulders,” she recalled. “He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest.”

Toby’s jumping apparently managed to dislodge the apple from Parkhurst’s windpipe.

“As soon as I started breathing, he stopped and began licking my face, as if to keep me from passing out,” she said.

I don't think I have ever seen a Johnny Depp movie, other then ED WOOD...the guy always looks so creepy.

If anyone can do it right, it's Burton/Depp.

And Dariusz Wolski, as Cimematographer, should really give the film the "look" it needs (Dark City, The Crow, Pirates of the Caribbean).

I agree. Well, not that I've seen Ed Wood. I agree that he looks creepy. I have never seen a Johnny Depp movie. He must be a good actor, though. He seems to be busy.

I've always been worried that SWEENEY TODD would fall into the hands of someone who would be tempted to over produce it.  I've been imagining "Not While I'm Around" opened up a la "Consider Yourself" from OLIVER or "Thank You Very Much" from SCROOGE, with Mrs Lovett and Toby dancing and covorting with the various vendors and rag pickers of Fleet Street in a song/dance/parade extravaganza.

*There was a mini-reunion of sorts out in the hallway a little earlier: a couple of "Grease Academy" alumni, including some of the final 12 (14).
